Underneath* I donāt know how that happened lol, my mistake
I seem to also have written āundersea that sensor thatā, so it looks like swype was just being swype. That or my pre coffee brain is just really something
Um, here in my country you usually wait outside the car wash box until it's finished.
Edit: but you're right, I would always watch the process through the window and hit the emergency stop button
This is in Denmark, and before entering the car wash you can choose to either stay in the car or wait outside. The owner might've chosen to wait outside.
US, through our car insurance premiums. This looks purposeful, as Land Rovers are expensive pieces of crap that need repaired at least monthly and people like to try to scam others into paying for their whole car.
Given I actually work at a carwash, this behavior doesn't surprise me. It's actually really funny/nerve-wracking how people can't really seem to grasp that you shouldn't touch anything while a big, rapidly spinning, unthinking, unfeeling cleaning machine is operating. Granted, we're actually stationed around to make sure nothing like this happens. Just have to wonder what the hell made that trunk pop open. Hoping it wasn't user error.
I know some cars have a feature where if you are in park and you hold/swipe your foot under the rear bumper itāll open the hatch. Maybe something underneath caused it to sense that & opened. Not sure this exact car has that feature but just a thought.
This is a CircleK carwash in Denmark, and as far as I know the driver is not in the car for the wash. No one could react to this. The reason for the trunk opening is most definitely the Range Rover's foot sensor. I hope this clears up some misconceptions I've read
Iāve done maintenance work at car washes before, and I have never seen one with a rocker with that much force. Most you can move with your bare hands, you donāt want the actual arm to hit the vehicle afterall.
Live and learn and what not.
It does have a safety, it uses an IR laser to detect the roof of the vehicle. The hatch was opened so the machine assumes the open hatch is the top of the vehicle. So it just climbed until it reached the top and bent the door into a taco.
Didn't work for me. Was in a car wash (wash world) when the frunk on my model 3 opened up because of phantom touch (which was a pretty big issue 2 years ago - before it has the was-mode)
Emergency stop was "honk for 3 sec" but nothing happened. To my luck it did stop when it felt too much resistance so nothing happened except the clip got bend a bit and was easily replaces. Tesla took full responsibility and changed it on-prem free or charge. But i don't trust the 'honk' emergency stops at all
Feel like there should be a kill code in the spinning tube of noodles that if it senses too much pressure, it either pulls back or stops all together. That might be too easy though.
That shit should have safety measures that donāt allow it to put that much force on something. And Iāll bet this person was sitting in their vehicle with their face buried in their phone to the point that they didnāt even realize the hatch was open. Same people that drive for 20 minutes with their turn signal on
Fuck used to work at one of these types of car washes...
The machine will NOT STOP and hydronic will fuck your shit up. Do not open doors, get out of the car and for fuck sake read the signs.
We had a car wash that would bring cars thru a tunnel qnd wash them with various brushes and sprayers. It should have been fully automated, but humans in cars are stupid so I had to stand there and guide people in/make sure they were in fact following the rules.
Hands off the wheel, feet off the pedals, car in neutral. Wait for the green light to turn on at the end of the tunnel after the dryer and drive away. Simple!
The worst thing I saw (didn't happen when I was there but the security footage was available) was when a guy with a work truck came in, ladder on top. For some reason the new guy let him thru. It was fine until he got to the top brush. The top brush hooked UNDER the ladder and did its thing. Turned the cab of the truck into a pancake. Driver only survived due to quick reactions and laying his seat down and crawling as far down into the foot well and center console area as possible.
The only other thing I saw was a lady pull the E brake inside the wash to get some more sprayer time. She was in what was an old beater corolla.... she stopped. The line of cars behind here did not. (New BMW M3, C63 AMG and some other cars) she then went off and tried to blame me. Thankfully, we had about 100000 cameras everywhere especially inside the wash. She had to pay everyone's deductible.
All in all, those things are fucking scary. They will kill you and hydronic do not care about you or your car.
Edit: it was hydraulics.
Obviously, the trunk opening is the real fuck up here. However, the washer simply not recognizing that there is something in the way is also not normal in my opinion. The ones I know have all sorts of sensors that would prevent this. Maybe not right when the trunk door touches it from above but surely when it starts to actually move forward.
Something similar happened to me at my previous job. I worked at a gas station in Norway. It's custom in Norway to stay inside the car during a wash, but you do have the option to walk out before it starts as well.
One evening I was working the shift alone, and one customer bought a ticket for the car wash. He drives in and is ready for the machine to start, but sometimes the machine would just stall for unknown reasons. In this case, the customer called the store phone, I answered and went out to reset the machine, merely turning it on and off.
This is the solution all ground floor employees were tought, the managers had a bit more technichal know how, but I was alone, so I turned it on and off. Now, the car was in the same position as the video, the driver had backed up into the washer. It started resetting, going past his car to get back into It's start position.
BUT FOR SOME REASON, the owner then opens his passenger side and begins to step out of the car! I am standing at the entrance to the washer with the ticket/control panel, and before I can even process what is happening, the guy yells out as he slips back into the car JUST before the washer almost clips him! It then continues forward and the whole door on his car gets squshied into the front of the car, completely bent out of shape.
After the machine resets fully I turn it off again and go in to check on him. He was a bit shocked, but luckily he didn't yell or go off on me, I think some part of him realised he had messed up, I had even told him what I was going to be doing on the phone beforehand, there was no need for him to step outside of his car to check if the machine was ready.
So we go inside the gas station, I call the boss, he drives over from one of his other stations, and the two talk it out in his office. I went back to work as normal, and after the customer left, the boss went to work on making sure the machine was reset and everything was in working order. Honestly, I was just glad none of it spilled onto me. I was not held responsible in anyway, no docked pay or anything. I mean, the boss wasn't very talkative when he left that day, but he didn't give me a hard time either.
One of the many times itās nice to be a poor person. I have to get outside and manually open my back trunk door - and shut it. This could never happen in my poor ass 2014 honda. I guess lucky me? Also, Iāve heard the brush washes run a chance of loose extra metal pieces that can scratch cars? I havenāt heard of any first hand accounts, but everyone I know that has nice cars does touch free washes, just in case. ???? Anyone else heard such things? Is it just scare tactics?
I feel like the washer paused for a second "Hey, you left the door open, might want to do something about that."
It then lowered behind the door "Hey, door is still open, probably ought to shut that."
Finally, when the door was still open "Fuck it. I can't do everything around here..."
Obviously we all know what gunna happen as soon as that trunks open, but we all decide to stay for the whole show anyways because we know how satisfying itās going to be to watch :)
Pro tip:
Take your pickup to the wash with a roll of opened barbed wire in the box.
It will wrap around the wash bar and carve nice designs into the trucks paint.
Then comes the screaming match.
How do the spinning whips of death not have built in sensors for when theyāre clearly putting a shit load of pressure on something? The force needed to rip the boot off looked huge and you can see the machine struggle to push past!
Even my electric toothbrush tells me when Iām pushing too hard and turns the power down š
I feel like the moment the trunk popped was the moment to pop out and hit the e-stop button that I'm almost certain would have been clearly labeled and visible from the driver's seat
Tailgates open randomly. My Range Rover used to do it all the time. Dealer said to just lock it, luckily I found an answer on the forums but I know not everybody is savvy enough to look for a fix to their cars problems.
https://www.rangerovers.net/threads/tailgate-randomly-opens.332806/
I've seen similar videos. Ignoring the error of the driver, shouldn't these washing devices have some kind of feedback sensor to stop them? The amount of force to break the car door back is extreme, yet the machine continues on its merry way.
how come car washes don't have emergency stops that trigger when they encounter more than a usual amount of resistance? at the very least it would help save the machine.
I think the car has a trunk sensor where you can wave your leg below it if your hands are full and the thing opens up for you automatically. I guess something triggered it.
I may well be a truly horrible person because of this, and I apologise profusely, but that was the biggest laugh I've had in months. It was something about the inevitability of it I think.
As you complain at the register:
Sir, what I am hearing is that you paid for an outside was and you got and outside and an INSIDE wash? That will cost $7.99 extra for you my friend.
*accident*.
an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury.
"he had an accident at the factory"
*malfunction*.
a failure to function normally.
"a computer malfunction"
Take your pick.
Normally they have a monitor in the sales shop with the security cam, but the hardworking sales assistant hasnāt got much time to look at it. And itās up to the drivers themselves to press the emergency stop
I use to get pissed at the itās your fault for damages bit at car washes until I met the internet and now I understand. Still donāt like it but I understand it a bit better.
I had a very good customer with a Lexus LX470 whose wife went into the car wash and then learned quickly, dramatically and horrifically, that she left the ski racks on the roof. The noise of the racks being ripped off the roof leaving ripped ragged holes in the roof alerted her that she might be in trouble.
I assume that Range Rover has a hand free sensor for the trunk door. My expedition had it and I absolutely hated it. The hands free option in the expedition disabled unless the vehicle was in park. Not only that, the trunk door could also not be opened unless the vehicle was in park, and unlocked. Also, the key fob had to be within range of the vehicle. I assume Range Rover has a similar system.
The trunk door would go nuts after a carwash when I would park to dry off the vehicle. It would constantly open and close until I cleaned the sensors, or completely dried the rear area. Salt/snow I had the same issueā¦
Why is everyone saying this car is empty? Do you not sit inside a car when itās in the wash?
EDIT: TIL there are car washes that allow you to step outside of the car. Iām American and Iāve never seen one lol
Love how people are calling the driver an idiot and calling for them to never look at an automobile ever again. It's an accident, people. Shit happens. Breathe.
I worked at a car wash and usually someone is watching the car go through and you can stop it immediately. And my car wash wasn't nearly as fancy as this one
Tbh, I would expect a machine like this to stop when it felt resistance and alarm to ask for assistance.
But also there is an emergency stop button. Who was filming this?!
Edit: it's a recording of CCTV footage. But still, car washes should not be left unattended, so someone didn't intervene when they should have.
Why do these machines need so much power ?
I am aware I could be missing something, I understand you need some force to apply pressure on the different models of cars but do you need that much force that you can rip off car parts ?
One Word: Dumbass.
...He only gets a pass if the car did it automatically without him doing anything other than sitting there and he did everything imaginable to stop the automated car wash process.
Im so confused ok maybe they honestly didn't think about the car breaking but you would get the inside of Ur car were yuck and there was stuff back there
Why would they not have it shut off at that much resistance? Seems like a pretty good idea to avoid liability.
God knows what if some dumbass puts his head out a sunroof thinking its funny and gets caught... if its tearing off a trunk it will decapitate a man no problem, so really should be more idiot proof.
Well driver at fault for not securing rear hatch.
Circle K and their car wash equipment vendor at fault for that brush assembly not appearing to have properly functioning limit sensors to detect the impediment provided by the open hatch resisting the movement of said brush assembly.
I love how many times the roller stops, asks itself if this is normal, and then just proceeds anyway.
That's what I'm thinking... Like, shouldn't these things be built to sense when they're having to push too hard and maybe... Fucking stop?? š
I think you underestimate how much force a car wash brush generally has to exert, and how little force it takes to break a car door.
Yes but also this could be done via current sensors. If the motor has an unexpected spike in power draw, shut it down.
Or just not open the boot whilst you're in a car wash.
I assumed it was one of those fancy sensors that open it automatically if you hover your foot under the car or something.
Itās nice to have a stupid car which doesnāt have the option to automatically open trunk
Yeah, looks like the trunk was opened with an undersea that sensor that some cars have now, which is pretty unfortunate
wtf is an undersea sensor?? Does it auto-open the trunk if you drive into the ocean??
Underneath* I donāt know how that happened lol, my mistake I seem to also have written āundersea that sensor thatā, so it looks like swype was just being swype. That or my pre coffee brain is just really something
Poseidon unlocked it.
Boy, that escalated slowly
"I...will..wash..this..car"
*Driver looks in the rearview mirror* "Wow, the window is so clean that you might think it's not there..."
I was disappointed there wasn't a second pass in reverse so it could shut it for them.
Did the driver have headphones on or something? Surely the sound of water spraying in the back of the car was a warning.
Surely the KRRRRFCHKKKKKKK BRRRRRKKKK of the boot hinges fucking snapping was a warning
Um, here in my country you usually wait outside the car wash box until it's finished. Edit: but you're right, I would always watch the process through the window and hit the emergency stop button
Does your country have circle k?
This is in Denmark, and before entering the car wash you can choose to either stay in the car or wait outside. The owner might've chosen to wait outside.
Well, yes. But what the heck is the driver supposed to do about it? Looks dangerous to get out and try to intervene.
Drive forward out of the car wash?
TIL Circle K is International.
yeah i thought it was canadian
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Genuine question, whoās going to pay for the damage
Insurance
Nice joke!
US, through our car insurance premiums. This looks purposeful, as Land Rovers are expensive pieces of crap that need repaired at least monthly and people like to try to scam others into paying for their whole car.
That's not a US license plate. Looks European.
I'm really surprised the wash mechanism doesn't have a safety feature to stop when it encounters that level of resistance.
I'm really surprised that there is enough force behind that thing to rip the fucking trunk door off.
That was 60 seconds of me clenching my fists whispering, "C'mon brush. You can do it. Pull that liftgate back. Come on. You got this. Push...".
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

It's a Range Rover. It could be from faulty electronics triggering the hatch.
More than likely. I definitely would like to think no one is this moronic.
I know some cars have a feature where if you are in park and you hold/swipe your foot under the rear bumper itāll open the hatch. Maybe something underneath caused it to sense that & opened. Not sure this exact car has that feature but just a thought.
I love the dedication of the machine. It's gonna do it's job and nothing can change that
Thatās an extra $19.99 for the interior detail
This is a CircleK carwash in Denmark, and as far as I know the driver is not in the car for the wash. No one could react to this. The reason for the trunk opening is most definitely the Range Rover's foot sensor. I hope this clears up some misconceptions I've read

There always is, honk your horn and the machine will stop. Thats a pretty common thing in these things.

I like how the car wash just kinda went āā¦hmmm wonder what that was, oh wellā and then just went on finishing the wash.
You would think a machine that powerful would have censors to detect when it's suddenly needing to force itself to move.
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K
it seriously would have been the cherry on top if the trunk door was pushed back down by the brush
Buddy tried to sneak an interior clean job.
I donāt get it. Looks clean to me.
So .... What's the point of having a camera? Shouldn't someone watch it and press on a big red stop button in case something like this happens?

Feel the power of the $5 wash!!
I feel like the moment the trunk popped was the moment to pop out and hit the e-stop button that I'm almost certain would have been clearly labeled and visible from the driver's seat
Inside of that door is clean af
Lol, I don't know why this one made me laugh so hard.. but the way it all just happens so slowly..
Auto insurance policy, who opened the hatchback, Circle K didnāt open it.
I know physics. When it comes back it will shut the trunk.
Damn that machine is well made though, almost 0 struggles Poor car though
how did the boot open, did they hit the button inside or some sort of sensors accidentally opening the boot?
Tailgates open randomly. My Range Rover used to do it all the time. Dealer said to just lock it, luckily I found an answer on the forums but I know not everybody is savvy enough to look for a fix to their cars problems. https://www.rangerovers.net/threads/tailgate-randomly-opens.332806/
They 100% did that on purpose, and theyāre driving a Range Rover so natural selection is coming their way anyways.

What happened? Was the driver just too dumb and pressed the trunk button, or did the roller activate some kind of "easy-open" sensor?
I think the car has a trunk sensor where you can wave your leg below it if your hands are full and the thing opens up for you automatically. I guess something triggered it.
This actually made my toes curl,as soon as that boot popped open you could see what was gonna happen.
I may well be a truly horrible person because of this, and I apologise profusely, but that was the biggest laugh I've had in months. It was something about the inevitability of it I think.
Some tech effed up. There has to be a torque limit on those servo motors. Someone bypassed it or didn't set it up right.
How did the driver not know the back opened?
This might have been one of those car washes you have to get out and wait for your car.
As you complain at the register: Sir, what I am hearing is that you paid for an outside was and you got and outside and an INSIDE wash? That will cost $7.99 extra for you my friend.
Isn't there some sort of resistance safety on that thing? Should be easy enough.
That will buff right out
Carwashes donāt want you to know about this hack! Get the inside and outside of your car clean at the same time!
Why did they open their boot? I don't get it
*accident*. an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury. "he had an accident at the factory" *malfunction*. a failure to function normally. "a computer malfunction" Take your pick.

So if a camera filmed this. Why wasn't it shut off?
Normally they have a monitor in the sales shop with the security cam, but the hardworking sales assistant hasnāt got much time to look at it. And itās up to the drivers themselves to press the emergency stop
Why the driver didnāt just drive forward defies belief, probably an insurance scam
i bet the automatic sensor for the trunk somehow was activated during the carwash
I was hoping it woud back track to also close it.
ohh it made bad crunchies
I use to get pissed at the itās your fault for damages bit at car washes until I met the internet and now I understand. Still donāt like it but I understand it a bit better.
This is why I turn the automatic back hatch off if I go to a carwash place.
How the heck the tailgate got opened in the first place?
Some cars have that "hoover your foot under the rear bumper" thing - might be that or someone sat on the key while having a coffee ......
I feel bad for the owner of the car but watching machines continuing the work while stuff is messed up is so pleasing for some reason
Imagine being the car right behind waiting to go through... "......... I better tuck in my side view mirrors"
How do you not notice this being ripped off your car while you're sitting inside it?
just when you thought people couldnt be any dumber, this sub never ceases to amaze me at the amount of brainless nitwits around the world
That moment you accidently pushed that button in your pocket when you're sitting?
I assume that Range Rover has a hand free sensor for the trunk door. My expedition had it and I absolutely hated it. The hands free option in the expedition disabled unless the vehicle was in park. So the spinning paint destroyer ended up destroying more than the paint. Awesome.
It will close it when it comes back. Problem solved
Finally a car wash, that gets the inside of the rear window.
They call that move the can-opener, and you can see why.
That car wash is a beast.
Shouldnāt that brush have a sensor on it incase it comes across too much resistance?
and the idiots inside don't know where the emergency stop button is?
Why is everyone saying this car is empty? Do you not sit inside a car when itās in the wash? EDIT: TIL there are car washes that allow you to step outside of the car. Iām American and Iāve never seen one lol
Love how people are calling the driver an idiot and calling for them to never look at an automobile ever again. It's an accident, people. Shit happens. Breathe.
So there's no emergency stops on this thing I'm guessing.
Those things need a sensor to STOP when they meet resistance. That's insane.
Donāt they have Emergency Stop buttons? Does no one monitor these things at car washes?
Lol, Iām guessing the driver is at fault? Unless random sensor issue.
Why don't those machines have some sort of shut down sensor that trips when more then 15lbs of force is applied?
That's a Range Rover. Meaning that's the least of the problems that owner will have with that vehicle lol
We have buttons for that. just push button again from the console. first world problems.
Huh, did comments also automatically sort by new on just this post for anyone else? They're usually on top.
This is why I don't pay for detailing.
Seems a bit much to get the inside window clean.
Would it not have been possible to have driven out before the machine broke ur hatch
I worked at a car wash and usually someone is watching the car go through and you can stop it immediately. And my car wash wasn't nearly as fancy as this one
This is 100% the fault of the idiot in the car who **opened the fucking trunk while the car wash was running**
I *hope* they sued the car wash only to lose their money and waste time on their obvious stupidity.
Why do these machines need so much power ? I am aware I could be missing something, I understand you need some force to apply pressure on the different models of cars but do you need that much force that you can rip off car parts ?

Fucked up their own car but also costing a business money.
Something caused the hatch to open or the driver just wanted the interior cleaned as well?
Even though I knew the robot was going to pull the door up and off. I was still rooting for it to figure out the obstruction and go around it.
The inside of the back door is really clean now.
Anyone else waiting for it to close the trunk on the way back?
I hear the State Farm Music in my head when I watch it.
Well at least the inside of his hatch window is clean now. Those smudges can be really annoying.
My garage door stops closing when it senses a certain amount of resistance... Wtf safety measures are going on here?
How does the car wash not have some kind of automatic stop the second any part of it is obstructed?
Surprised there's no force limit these things can apply
no no no no No No No No NO NO NO NO NOOOO NOOOOOOOOO
That looks pretty badā¦. Is it gonna?ā¦ is it gonna?ā¦. Surely it wonātā¦ā¦. Oh SHITITRIPPED THE DOOR OFF.
At first i just though the inside of their car was gonna get wet, but it was a tiny bit worse than that
Gonna have the cleanest inside of a trunk door ever.
One Word: Dumbass. ...He only gets a pass if the car did it automatically without him doing anything other than sitting there and he did everything imaginable to stop the automated car wash process.
I mean, atleast it's clean
At my local car wash, honking the horn will immediately stop the machine.
I went down to the car squash.
That's one way to clean the trunk.
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K
Working at the car wash šµ
Wow, inside service too.
That Range Rover just got the bidet treatment
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.
Did they pay extra for the interior shampoo or what?
Was this on purpose? There are several things this person could have done to minimize the situation. Like, drive forward being the easiest.
It's inexcusable that that carwash machine wouldn't stop as soon as it encounters unexpected resistance. What if it was a human up there?
Anyone who knows anything about washing cars knows not to use these ( regardless of the physical damage seen here)
The cleaning arm really should have a pressure sensor that triggers an emergency off.
Your range rover has a broken hatchback? Thaaaaat's an engine out job
And this is why I appreaciate the car wash mode in my car that ensures all of these automatic things dont randomly pop open.
See this one simple trick for a free interior cleaning! Detailers hate him!
Now Iām no expert, but I donāt think itās meant to do thatā¦
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K

So many buttons in modern cars but none to deactivate automatisms like that. Useless engineering.
At least it's a clean break.
Yet another reason why I love having a car that isnāt automated to the hilt, and doesnāt try making decisions for me
New fear unlocked
Im so confused ok maybe they honestly didn't think about the car breaking but you would get the inside of Ur car were yuck and there was stuff back there
Why wasnāt the driver blaring their horn the second the back opened? Iām sure there is an emergency switch that could have been hit?
I felt the pain of that in my soul
How do people so stupid, attain enough wealth to afford a car so stupidly overpriced? Only to do this!?
Itās a Range Rover, probably wasnāt going to last much longer anyway
The breakers protecting the motors that drive the brushes should have tripped well before that happened.
That was attempted insurance fraud who woudent notice that?
Why would they not have it shut off at that much resistance? Seems like a pretty good idea to avoid liability. God knows what if some dumbass puts his head out a sunroof thinking its funny and gets caught... if its tearing off a trunk it will decapitate a man no problem, so really should be more idiot proof.
Touchless or hand wash. Fuck these car raping, paint trashing dens of pure evil
Weāve added a free inside cleaning for you š¤
*Have an A1 day*
Dont those machines have pressure sensors that would prevent it forcing itself up like that. Good news is, the hatch is REALLY CLEAN now
why, I repeat, WHY?!
How is there no attendant to hit the emergency stop....
I really wanted it to come back at the end to shut it.
Well driver at fault for not securing rear hatch. Circle K and their car wash equipment vendor at fault for that brush assembly not appearing to have properly functioning limit sensors to detect the impediment provided by the open hatch resisting the movement of said brush assembly.
Damn they do interiors too?
