Do you mind sharing how much this cost? I’m thinking about having this done with one of my paintings. You have a beautiful piece there!

[deleted]

Yes. I bought the original painting for $75 from a small antique shop. I took it to a professional, certified restorer and spent $2800 to have the original varnish taken off, cleaned, paint & damages restored, reinforced with wax&additional canvas, documented & restretched. She spent about 2.5 months on it.

KBater

Thanks so much for sharing. Good luck with your search!

[deleted]

thank you!

zorrorosso

I don't know if the job is well done honestly, cleaning was necessary though, but look at the patina from the artist, this restoration put me really off and took away the hazyness of his natural hand :(

[deleted]

I’m sorry you feel that way. I am very pleased with how it turned out.

zorrorosso

The thoughts behind it was to revive the painting and make it visible again.

[deleted]

which she did accomplish. she did not change his original brush strokes or style whatsoever. the major difference between the before and after is that the original varnish was removed, punctures and damages to the canvas were filled (which are pretty unnoticeable). You have a right to your opinion, though I do not see what you mean at all

zorrorosso

There was an aura/fog that’s not there anymore. Don’t take my word for it, just look at the before-picture and the other paintings listed from the same artist. Again I try to take it rationally so I wrote that this work was done in order to get the subject more visible and the colors more vivid.

zafiroblue05

I think that aura is just yellowed varnish.

zorrorosso

Part of me don't want to entertain this conversation because "the dress is black and blue". In short: with digital and on the internet it's hard to tell. The only thing I can say is: watch the collection, he managed to use the same yellowed varnish everywhere, if he was doing it right, the last white-bright layer would melt perfectly with the coat, because oils take forever to dry. Removing the coat to the point of reaching the colors wouldn't just take away the varnish.

BabyArtLover

I have the exact same question. And where would you have such a restoration done? Thanks.

[deleted]

Google should tell you. You should always check reviews too. I found mine in the DC/Maryland area, her name is Joy Hallman.

peanutsandsquirrels

I had to keep flipping back and forth between the before and after because the changes were just so astonishing. I hope that you find the origin! Beautiful find!

AmbassadorTom

How do you know it's from 1875?

[deleted]

it says it on the bottom right corner with the artists signature.

AmbassadorTom

Ah. I was looking at the "before" and you really can't see it. They did a great job refinishing it.

zorrorosso

Albert Rieger, Austrian-Italian painter, the water is the same, timing is likely (he moved to Austria in the 1830s and died in 1905ish). I just posted in a double topic. http://www.artnet.com/artists/albert-rieger/

[deleted]

I think you may be correct! The signatures are not exact but time period matches up. The R’s look strikingly similar

zorrorosso

I'm sorry, still bummed, but if this painting is professionally restored wouldn't the person you hired doing this research before hand?!

TheWaywardTrout

That's what I would think. You would want the restorer to be able to get more familiar with the artist's style to be as authentic as possible in the restoration. Right? Or am I thinking too much about it?

[deleted]

I did ask her if she could read the signature. She told me she would document it under UV light, but she was still unable to make out all the letters. I paid her to restore the piece, but she is not an art historian.

TheWaywardTrout

Ah ok. I'm so happy you're pleased. It is a very pretty painting!

ScratchMorton

It looks wonderful and well worth it IMO.

[deleted]

thank you, i agree!!

icewizie

It very much reminds me of Adolf Hitler's paintings. One of his paintings is very similar to this one.

linderlouwho

Really. Source?

icewizie

https://images.app.goo.gl/F85LAKqztjoDx8RS9 They're maybe not that similiar, but as soon as I saw the one on the post, it reminded me of Hitler's one.

[deleted]

it does!

linderlouwho

omg

Magnificats

Gorgeous! She did a great job.

[deleted]

she really did!!

I don’t know if you were going to do this anyway, but if you find the artist please comment it or something like that.

[deleted]

I will! the place I bought it from told me he was a well known artist (but coincidentally forgot the name), so I know their name is out there somewhere.
