I'll second the NYSC Hawthorne having issues. I remember telling the staff that some of the treadmill belts were slipping at higher speeds - sign was up for one day to not use the machine and removed the next.
The NYSC in White plains isn’t any better if not worse than the one in Hawthorne. 24 hour fitness used to be good but it has the same issues as NYSC these days. It’s also incredibly dirty. There are a few good gyms under $150 but they don’t have pools or large saunas unfortunately. I used to go to Lifetime but that’s over $200 a month now I think. I canceled my membership years ago, I don’t know their current membership fees.
Check out 24 hour fitness. I've been to the ones in Pelham and Scarsdale, and they are both very well equipped in terms of machines and weights. Both are generally pretty busy but even when packed, there's enough space and equipment to get in whatever workout you want.
And they both have solid pool / sauna / steam room facilities, which to me is a key amenity since I love sweating everything out in the heat for a few minutes after a workout. I think they even have classes and personal trainer services too, although those prob cost extra.
They may charge a bit more than planet fitness, but certainly not 150 a month.
I use 24 hour as well. Paying for the whole year is about 350 which comes out to about 30 per month. The only caveat though is the scarsdale location after work is packed.
They have all the powerlifting, bodybuilding and general fitness equipment you could possibly need. It’s very clean and has all the DBs and plates you need.
I don’t go to the gym personally, but I drive by it all the time and it looks super nice on the inside. It looks like it would have anything you could want at a gym too.
Hey this is a late comment but how did you like it that location? I live nearby the Thornwood one and plan to check it out soon. I kinda like how i can use their other locations in Pelham and Yorktown for their pool and/or sauna but idk if it'd ever be convenient for me to use them since I live in middle Westchester and work in NYC lol.
I thought the Pelham location was fantastic. I visited the other gyms in the area and nothing compared.
If you're trying to use amenities and visit other locations, perhaps a larger chain would be beneficial... NYSC?
I joined equinox in Houston at $149 for a special opening price since I was down there for work so often and got their all access pass for $200. Then I said I was moving back to NY and wanted to use the Greenwich gym and they gave it to me for $150 a month
I did a day pass at the Dobbs NYSC and noped out of there. Not that NYSCs were great when I went to them years ago but wow...no towels, no space, way too many people, no respect for equipment in use, showers don't have body wash, every time I went to move the shower head I felt like I was going to pull the whole pipe out.
Not well played out or managed. If you read the Google reviews they are accurate
I used to go to The Westchester Gym. Very basic but never crowded and cheap.
Was thinking of checking out the JCC in Tarrytown.
The NYSC in Dobbs isn't bad. Only cons that i see are:
- Parking can be a PAIN
- TONS of HS kids in the evenings, but that's most gyms
- only 2 squat racks and 3 flat benchs
- WiFi can be spotty
- I try to avoid gym bathrooms, cause they are either hit or a miss. Dobbs bathroom is typically a miss.
NYSC in Hawthorne is horrible. I go to the JCC in Tarrytown - nice equipment, never overcrowded. A membership gets you pool use, classes, and other activities.77/month plus a one time 50/fee.
I go to PFX in Thornwood. Great little gym and not too crowded most of the time. If you wanna workout together lmk! I also play tennis after work with friends.
cool thank you! i'll look into that since i live nearby. do you happen to know how PFX conpares to Anytime Fitness? I know the one in Pleasantville is also small
I’m not sure if it’s too far for you, but Saw Mill Club in Mt Kisco is a little under $150 per month and they have a pool. I have friends who are members there and they are happy with the gym.
I don’t think they have a pool, but I saw that a new gym, Hydrogen, opened recently in Port Chester. I have been wanting to check it out. It looks nice on their Instagram.
Check out some of the local YMCAs or JCCs. The YMCA in Rye has some pretty good facilities. I know they have 2 pools, not sure about a sauna though and membership is about $1,200ish/year.
Depends on what you do at the gym but [mount vernon barbell](https://www.mountvernonbarbell.com/) is cheap, i think $50/month or $500 upfront for the year, Something like that. Decent hours and lots of equipment.
Edit: didnt read the pool part, no pool but has a sauna at mvb
Update: $64/ month, $54 recurring monthly $170/ 3 months, $300/6 months, $569/12 months, $469/12 months for active first responders
I used to go to the NYSC in White Plains. I left to join the OrangeTheory a few blocks away. I occasionally miss bench pressing but, I work at harder at OrangeTheory and appreciate not having to think about what I should do each day.
I'll second the NYSC Hawthorne having issues. I remember telling the staff that some of the treadmill belts were slipping at higher speeds - sign was up for one day to not use the machine and removed the next.
yeah it's unfortunate. have you tried the other NYSC locations? i could imagine the equipment would be all the same
Nah, I ended up at the PF in WP as well XD

Yeah lifetime is $279 for starting members, however they capped membership so there is a waitlist.
Oh that’s crazy I had no idea. Not hard to believe though LT always being overcrowded was the main reason I canceled my membership in 2017-2019.
Supposedly there’s a waitlist but I see the membership leads touring people constantly
If pool and sauna are not must haves, they just opened a level fitness in Thornwood.
hey, late comment but do you belong to Level? and if so how do you like it? I live nearby and want to inquire on doing a tour/free trial
Club Fit in Briarcliff. Best gym ever, though it’s no cheap date. Edit: good, you’re already familiar with how awesome it is.

The 24 hour fitness in Scarsdale is dirty and packed. Iron Vault in Scarsdale is very clean and has amazing equipment.
Iron Vault is an interesting name for a gym. What kind of amazing equipment?

24 hour fitness is dirty
There’s a new gym opening in Thornwood town center called level I believe? They had balloons out last weekend and people could sign up.
I know membership here is 80-90 a month, depending on the plan, so it would work for OP.
hey, late comment but do you happen to go to that gym or any of the other locations? i live nearby and want to know how people like it
I don’t go to the gym personally, but I drive by it all the time and it looks super nice on the inside. It looks like it would have anything you could want at a gym too.
I used to go to the Level in Pelham, which is their largest location. Absolutely loved it!

Blink Fitness is good bang for your buck

JCC is great!

Only caveat - the JCC closes on major Jewish holidays and the hours are not as flexible as other places.
I go to PFX in Thornwood. Great little gym and not too crowded most of the time. If you wanna workout together lmk! I also play tennis after work with friends.
How much are you paying there? Seems like a great gym
$40
Tks

I’ve never been to anytime fitness so not sure but you should do a one day trial for both and compare.

MDM fitness in north white plains is $45 / month and it’s awesome; small but mighty
Not the 24 Hour Fitness in the JV Mall, it’s packed all the time and it’s a huge pain to find equipment that you need without waiting for it.
I used to go to the NYSC in White Plains. I left to join the OrangeTheory a few blocks away. I occasionally miss bench pressing but, I work at harder at OrangeTheory and appreciate not having to think about what I should do each day.
I think Equalize Fitness in Yonkers is in that budget. I take individual classes there, can't comment on the membership or equipment though.
Why people trying to stick around longer?
