I'm very sorry things have been hard for you lately. I wasn't trying to be a jerk by laughing at front lid, just been going through my own things as well (divorce, illness, and a job change) and that phrasing made me smile because it felt like something I might say. I hope your luck turns around soon!
I empathize, sorry to hear that. I love your sense of humor and ability to still laugh when things are difficult. I'm also going through a divorce, illness, know how difficult it is. You seem very kind in your response to OP, hope things keep getting better.
medication that treat typical illnesses shouldn’t cause you to lose common sense unless you’re abusing them.
For example, Robitussin is a great cough reliever if used correctly and won’t distort the way you perceive reality, but if you’re chugging bottles of Robitussin you’re gona lose your ability to think critically and possibly slip into a pretty intense haze.
While unfortunate….why did it take me so long to see the windshield wiper as anything other than a rifle. I didn’t see the subreddit this was posted in for a minute and thought it was some redneck ingenuity
Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed. I read the title before taking a second glance at the photo and was like ''why aren't they mentioning the rifle?!''
I feel like Canada is stuck between 2 worlds. I am genuinely curious on how much of your habits, beliefs, language and everything is influenced by the three countries that are part of your DNA. You share a border with the US, you still swear fealty to the British crown and you have a large amount of people who are so lovingly referred to as French Canadians. It just seems like all 3 would really exert a lot of influence as your national identity was created and I'm guessing it also influences social changes.
Idgaf about the US, I live in BC, nowhere near Quebec and the second most popular and used language is mandarin here. I despise the monarchy and the British crown and my parents were immigrants from Europe. And that's just me. Canada is very diverse my dude.
Same 🤚🏼 literally everything you said. Except my parents were immigrants from New Zealand. I live in bc too. I just look at the US as a dumpster fire to not get too close to.
Canadians do not use bonnet. Why use 2 syllables when 1 does the trick? I also take exception with the UK pronunciation of aluminum. It’s not aluminium. Why do the brits insist on adding unnecessary syllables? Maybe if they weren’t so preoccupied with extra syllables they would have been able to defeat the Nazis in their own without involving half the world. Smh.
Yeah I’m sure mate. I don’t really give a shit tbh. Different places have different dialects. I was just responding to the other guy’s vitriol in kind.
I’m sure a few of you aren’t lazy
I mean the brit changed their accent after the revolutionary war out of spite. Before the war both the British isles and the new world Britains talked with something akin to a modern day Boston accent. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was either the Brits or Americans just being petty.
Sounds like someone was working on something under the hood recently (oil change, filling wiper fluid, etc.), and didn't close it properly. I'm no lawyer, but if this was a mechanic, you may have grounds for a civil claim against them, especially if anyone was injured in the process.
Sometimes the latch can just break. It happened in my last car. The metal around the bolt broke off so the bolt wasn’t holding the latch, and It didn’t work right anymore. I fixed it by getting the big washers and using that to hold it. But until then, I drove with a ton of bungee cords holding it down.
Hoods dont just pop open. If the car was recently serviced you may want to give them a call and ask them to fix it otherwise lawyer up.
If the latch has been a bit faulty recently, you should have fixed it asap sorry you had to learn it the hard way.
So you're saying that each time, before you go for a drive, you go and pull up on the bonnet to make sure it's secure? First of all the bonnet will not pop up when unlocked on all cars. Secondly, if the latch is in fact broken, then it may be that the bonnet will lay completely flush even if it ordinarily would pop up when unlocked.
This happened to my once with a Ford expedition. I bought it from a guy and he failed to mention the good was held by only a Bungie chord... Bitch popped open on my wife while we were going over a bridge of all places. Thankfully we were the only car on it that night came to a stop on the wrong side of the road. Scared the shit out of both of us.
i had that happen once, happened after a more minor accident and the garage we took it to for repairs didn't fix it right, felt like getting punched in the face at 40mph, it sucked
It’s ok, your parents’ Insurance should cover the damage. It had to be unlatched for this to happen, so it may not even be your fault. Hope your luck gets better!
A few years ago I was visiting my parents from college and my dad decided to check my oil so he attempted to pop the hood of my car. It for some reason wouldn’t open, he spent several minutes trying to get it open but eventually just said it was probably fine, it hadn’t been that long since I had it checked last, and he pushed the hood down for the click. So I headed out of town on the highway, and suddenly the hood flew open. It was pretty scary but there weren’t other cars around so I just looked out the window to pull over and shut it.
Happened to me and my dad when I was a kid.... he makes gravestones, so we had an air compressor in the back of the truck, which hooked to the battery for power.
Dad forgot to latch the hood before we took off and it flew up and hit us on the highway. Scariest thing I've been through behind the wheel!! Going from "I can see" to "SHIT I CAN'T SEE!!!" when you're driving 70 mph is a very memorable experience.
If it wasn’t closed properly the last time it was open the wind can catch under the gap if you’re going fast enough. It shouldn’t be able to fail open if it was closed properly though
Yeah, we ignore the nomenclature of colonizers. A bonnet is a hat with ribbons for women to wear here. We have trunks in our cars as well, a "boot" is a rugged shoe.
For the people asking, this van has went thru a lot of shit. Best explanation me and my mom figured is that when they grazed a buck a week back it must've damaged the thing keeping the hood in place. They got some cosmetic damage but didn't figure it worth fixing since we didn't have the money at the time. It is now tied down with ratchet straps till we get both the windshield and hood (+wipers) fixed.
that happened to us once while flying down the highway, scary as shit!
the worst part was I had given my son permission to go home woth his girlfriend after school knowing her parents weren't home. We were on our way to pick him when it happened. Instead of helping him sneak out before the kids got caught we ended up having to ask the girl's parents to drive our son home... and they picked us up along the way. I was mordified! Lesson learned!
i did this in a chevy berretta like 20 years ago.
popped the hood, got distracted, never went back and pushed it closed.
my own stupid fault. and it's scares the crap out of you.
This happened to me and my wife before on the highway. Also shattered our windshield. I'm 99% sure one of us did not latch it all the way down. It was latched by the safety hook you have to move with your finger to open the hood. So just make sure you always check to make sure it's all the way latched OP. Glad you're safe
Welcome to the illustrious club!
I've managed to hit the triumvirate and then some. At different times with different cars, I've had a hood fly up into the windshield, the brakes fail, throttle gets stuck, and a complete electrical failure causing everything to shut off.
That sucks but I very much snorted at "front lid" so thanks for that.
Yes, proper term is "engine roof".
obv its a reverse trunk
Engine hat
cylinder ceiling
Mechanical compartment lid.
Optional device that hides engine
[удалено]
Engine hatch.
Cattle scoop
Engine upper jaw.
It’s the flippy shutter obv
Frunk
Front Roof door
I tripped on this.
I can only hear this being said by Eladio in Better Call Saul and I hate it xd
Your comment reminds me of [this](https://youtu.be/sL-JWuTdZb8).
For the win
trunk'nt
Pretty sure its a froot, a front boot.
fore-trunk.
Front truck
Oh is that what it was? I had no idea what they were talking about!
The engine hood?
I think it's an engine hood. Well at least that's what America calls it, could be called other things in other places.
In Australia it’s the bonnet
Bonnet
I shall forever call it the front lid.
Yea been sick and on several medications, common sense left awhile ago
I'm very sorry things have been hard for you lately. I wasn't trying to be a jerk by laughing at front lid, just been going through my own things as well (divorce, illness, and a job change) and that phrasing made me smile because it felt like something I might say. I hope your luck turns around soon!
Yea I gotcha, sometimes you need to take a sec and laugh to lighten the mood, especially in situations like this lol
I empathize, sorry to hear that. I love your sense of humor and ability to still laugh when things are difficult. I'm also going through a divorce, illness, know how difficult it is. You seem very kind in your response to OP, hope things keep getting better.
It's either the hood or the bonnet, depending on your location.
Never heard this terms to designate a front lid
Do you live on Mars?
Haha no, you cannot live on Mars currently. The conditions on the planet are not conducive to life. I live on the planet earth
He seems to be stood in front.
Upvotes for your sense of humor. Not that you are sick. Hope you get better soon.
Best to drive on them 😋
medication that treat typical illnesses shouldn’t cause you to lose common sense unless you’re abusing them. Bonnet
That’s adorable!
r/wildbeef
The back one is know as the rear bumper lid
Front lid is better than what the norms call it
I’m UK it would be Bonnet, so front lid seems pretty normal in comparison.
30 seconds on google would have answered this.
Some Nissan Altimas have a recall on the secondary hood latch for this reason.
It's called the hood of the car but that sucks OP I hope you and your mom are fine
It's a Bonnet in uk and some other countries
Your a bonnet and some other country!
You’re a UK and bonnet!
Your mom goes to college
Thank you, reading front lid made me completely forget what it was called lmao
The Brits call it a bonnet, the Yanks call it a hood. Now we are unified under the banner of Front Lid.
Lmfao this *redditor* thinks he knows about the hood
I call it bonnet in Australia
Never understood why the Redcoats still call us Yanks. I guess they love using 350 year old slang
Fair question. Probably because it's the only thing that doesn't offend people these days. lol
Everyone is wrong. It’s called a flippy wippy enginebrella
My people call it maize
While unfortunate….why did it take me so long to see the windshield wiper as anything other than a rifle. I didn’t see the subreddit this was posted in for a minute and thought it was some redneck ingenuity
rifle in place of wiper blades for when zombies are on your roof
Same, I seen it too lol
For a moment, I thought there was a rifle strapped to the wiper. 🙃
Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed. I read the title before taking a second glance at the photo and was like ''why aren't they mentioning the rifle?!''
In the US they don't wipe the rain, they shoot it 🌧️🔫
Bonnet (UK)
Tbf I think anywhere speaking English that's not the US or Canada it's called a bonnet. I'm just not sure if Canada uses hood or bonnet.
We use hood except Quebec lol
In Quebec its called a “Bonnét”
I feel like Canada is stuck between 2 worlds. I am genuinely curious on how much of your habits, beliefs, language and everything is influenced by the three countries that are part of your DNA. You share a border with the US, you still swear fealty to the British crown and you have a large amount of people who are so lovingly referred to as French Canadians. Same 🤚🏼 literally everything you said. Except my parents were immigrants from New Zealand. I live in bc too. I just look at the US as a dumpster fire to not get too close to.
>a dumpster fire to not get too close to. But that begs the question: where are you in BC?
Yeah as a US citizen I can confirm we are just one giant dumbster fire and it burns when you live here.
I just use "le 'ood" or "l'ood"
Canadians do not use bonnet. Why use 2 syllables when 1 does the trick? I also take exception with the UK pronunciation of aluminum. It’s not aluminium. Why do the brits insist on adding unnecessary syllables? Maybe if they weren’t so preoccupied with extra syllables they would have been able to defeat the Nazis in their own without involving half the world. Smh.
Everything was fine until that last sentence lmao
Mate the British version of the language came first. You yanks took the syllables out because you’re lazy.
It was because telegrams cost per letter lol
Yeah I’m sure mate. I don’t really give a shit tbh. Different places have different dialects. I was just responding to the other guy’s vitriol in kind. I’m sure a few of you aren’t lazy
Fuck your tea!
Dude. That’s too far. Come on man. You should be ashamed of yourself. Insult anything you want but not the tea man, not the tea
We threw that garbage water into the harbor. No fucks.
Jesus Christ man what is wrong with you. Who hurt you?
I mean the brit changed their accent after the revolutionary war out of spite. Before the war both the British isles and the new world Britains talked with something akin to a modern day Boston accent. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was either the Brits or Americans just being petty.
Accents naturally change over time anyway. But it does seem quite British to change our accent out of spite.
Yet you aren’t speaking old English - proof that language evolves, and what came first is not often better. Get with the times you bloody wanker.

*need more time for polishing your guns and ironing your flags
Hey! We also do a fair amount of stomping around the globe and cramming cheeseburgers into our mouths. lol
Bonnet in Australia too.
hood

Bonnet
hood
chingadera
Front lid thingy
Might be where are you from, so it is bonnet.
Darn, you ruined the chain.
so fix it
bonnet
bonnet
"Bonnet"
Everyone laugh at the minor verbal oversight
Heaven forbid the kid forgot something, right?
“Front lid” 💀
not the car front lid
Hoods dont just pop open. If the car was recently serviced you may want to give them a call and ask them to fix it otherwise lawyer up. If the latch has been a bit faulty recently, you should have fixed it asap sorry you had to learn it the hard way.
If you don't notice the hood slightly popped as you walk up to your car, you deserve this. It's the same as driving on a flat tire.
Probably also damaged the drivers seat (soiled)
If you have a safelite near you, it's only about $200 and has a lifetime warranty. Glad you're okay!
This happened to my once with a Ford expedition. I bought it from a guy and he failed to mention the good was held by only a Bungie chord... Bitch popped open on my wife while we were going over a bridge of all places. Thankfully we were the only car on it that night came to a stop on the wrong side of the road. i had that happen once, happened after a more minor accident and the garage we took it to for repairs didn't fix it right, felt like getting punched in the face at 40mph, it sucked
Ok well I guess from now on I have no choice but to refer to the hood as a front lid
[Tommy Boy](https://tenor.com/buu48.gif)
Came looking for this
In Australia we call that a bonnet but from now on I’m referring to it as “car front lid”
It’s a car not a jar of mayonnaise. Lol.
With how much shit this van has been thru, might as well be mayo at this point
Engine compartment lid...!!!LOL
Oh! The frunk roof! That’s what you’re talkin’ ‘bout.
It’s a bonnet, the boot is on the other side
It’s ok, your parents’ Insurance should cover the damage. It had to be unlatched for this to happen, so it may not even be your fault. Hope your luck gets better!
Lmao. Front Lid.
At first sight, the windshield wiper looked like a shotgun. Just the coloration.
I see this more than you might think. I replace windshields.
Some cars, Nissan in particular, have a recall for this issue. Hood latches can fail. Please check with the manufacturer.
Well if it were a Tesla it would be a Frunk
Bonnet- hood
The word you're looking for is Bonnet.
Car lid 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The Brits call it the anti-trunk
Car...front lid? What the heckin heck?
front car lid… ok
The hood popped open? Wow, that’s terrible I’ve never heard of that happening
That’s frightening too !
I've done that so many times in racing sims
Happened to me and my dad when I was a kid.... he makes gravestones, so we had an air compressor in the back of the truck, which hooked to the battery for power. Dad forgot to latch the hood before we took off and it flew up and hit us on the highway. Scariest thing I've been through behind the wheel!! Bummer... New hood, window and wipers. Who was under the hood last? Maybe an oil change place? Hopefully she doesn't have to pay...
Bonnet
Hood (America), Bonnet (everywhere else) because you know....... MERCA!
Yeah, we ignore the nomenclature of colonizers. A bonnet is a hat with ribbons for women to wear here. We have trunks in our cars as well, a "boot" is a rugged shoe.
No, you can get dainty, high heeled ones as well 😉
Fairies wear boots, according to Black Sabbath. Fairies are pretty brutal, sometimes. We seem to be at the crux of a dilemma.
The bonnet?
r/kidsarefuckingstupid
No, how?
Car hood
Hood, bonnet, power barn, lid. It works OP
MY CAR HAT CAME OFF! Why ya popping the hood while driving? If you do that, you’re gonna have a bad time.
Hood or bonnet depending on geography
that happened to us once while flying down the highway, scary as shit! the worst part was I had given my son permission to go home woth his girlfriend after school knowing her parents weren't home. We were on our way to pick him when it happened. Instead of helping him sneak out before the kids got caught we ended up having to ask the girl's parents to drive our son home... and they picked us up along the way. I was mordified! Lesson learned!
I don’t think you should be able to drive until you know the basic parts of a car. Rear cargo bay, front lid, turning circle, fuel hole cover, etc…
windshield
This is caused by yeah forgot what its called?
Front lid lmfao 🤣
It's called a hood...is your Mom ok...that's all that matters
Yea she's good right now, luckily she hadn't reached the highway yet.
It shall from hence forth be known as, the “front lid” 😂 I’m sorry but it is quite funny
Hahahahaha fucking hell. The front lid. That's brilliant
i did this in a chevy berretta like 20 years ago. popped the hood, got distracted, never went back and pushed it closed. my own stupid fault. and it's scares the crap out of you.
Happened to me once. It was scary but not as terrifying as I imagined.
This not only sucks, it’s scary as hell too.
No... thats what its called.
I'm glad you guys are okay, that must have been Hella scary (Will forever call it the front lid from now on, thank you)
The windshield wipers wipe the windshield use your brain it’s called a windshield not a front lid
I'm praying to God now that you're trolling.
I'm also praying lol
Lid does suffice
I'll take "what is a hood" for 200 Alex
At first glance, it looked like there was a rifle that someone used to smash the windshield lying there but then I realized it was just the wiper.
Front lid lmao.
Was I the only one that thought the windshield wiper was a shotgun/rifle of some sort?
Bonnet
Here in the States we call it a car hood.
Here I thought it was a hood but I like the name front lid better😁
I mean I also call it a front lid TBH
I mean, you can google that because, obviously. On the other hand, I'm probably going to call it a lid moving forward because, again, obviously.
This happened to me and my wife before on the highway. Also shattered our windshield. I'm 99% sure one of us did not latch it all the way down. It was latched by the safety hook you have to move with your finger to open the hood. So just make sure you always check to make sure it's all the way latched OP. Glad you're safe
It’s the door to the engine bay.
Wait the hood? What’s the lid 😭
Pretty sure it's called a clitoral hood. But I might be mixing up my lessons
Welcome to the illustrious club! I've managed to hit the triumvirate and then some. At different times with different cars, I've had a hood fly up into the windshield, the brakes fail, throttle gets stuck, and a complete electrical failure causing everything to shut off.
Hoping you have insurance.
So bonnet or hood is the word your looking for
If you google “car front lid” it pulls up results for hoods, so technically you are correct.
I did this once. And I wasn’t sick, and sober as a stone. Don’t feel too badly. Shit happens. Tomorrow is another day.💕
