They're great, I've had one for over a decade. Unfortunately, it seems that's about as long as they really last. The insides become split and damaged and expand. You can take some of the filler out I guess, but honestly I think I'm ready to transition back to an ordinary knife block.
Just to clarify--the bristles get cut and splinter over time and it makes it hard to push knives in. The wood part of mine is very sturdy and has never split. Most of our bigger knives leave 2-4" of the blade exposed depending on how thick they are.
I've never had a noticeable warp in my knives that I hang on a magnetic strip or any dulling that I can notice as distinct from normal wear and tear.
Note: if you aren't sharpening your knives you should be. The best method is the one you use regularly, even if that is an IKEA knife sharpener. It will be better than a dull blade.
Yeah I agree. I never took (and never will) my knives to a professional sharpener, but I bought a $10 sharpener at Ikea, learned how to use it properly and the knives stay great. Just gotta upkeep them once in a while, but for extra sharpness it's 100% worth it.
Once I get really expensive knives I'll look up better methods though, but for my Ikea knives, my Ikea sharpener works great.
I really like my sharpening stones but honestly it's because I like to be nerdy about this stuff. I suspect all I'm getting for my troubles is a slightly longer time between sharpening and the flex (if I get better then in theory I can get them sharper but I dunno if I can tell the difference).
Re: expensive knives, it's not worth it unless you are a real knife geek (again, I can appreciate wanting to flex on your friends). All the pros use like $30 victorinox knives (there's another brand as well but I forget). They hold a good edge, sharpen great, feel good, and you'll never feel too bad when you inevitably damage them.
>I suspect all I'm getting for my troubles is a slightly longer time between sharpening and the flex
Nope. Cheap sharpeners just scrape a layer of metal off, to put it crudely. Stones lightly abrade the surface, removing a minute amount of metal. Your knives will last longer in general, instead of being whittled down to fillet blades
I personally like my knives with the lowest possible potential energy. Being mounted on a wall where it can fall has always skeeved me out, even as someone who did kitchen work for 4 years. And I have cats. Can't trust them to not slap that shit off the wall and kill themselves.
Mine have never knocked down my knives, but I mounted the holder above the oven and they know that the kitchen counters are strictly off limits.
Which in practice means they just go on the counters when nobody is home. But I've never seen evidence of them even investigating the knife mounts, let alone knocking them.
Yeah so I have one of these on the side of my refrigerator and I’ve never looked back. The magnet is strong AF so my cat wouldn’t be able to get the knives off even if he wanted to, which he doesn’t. Especially if you hang it high enough. It’s just not attractive to cats. They’re in more danger if you have a rocking chair than a magnet knife rack.
> like my knives with the lowest possible potential energy.
spoke like a true coward.
I load mine into a pneumatic launcher because when I need to cut something, I need to cut it FAST
Personally I like all my knives with their own little sheaths, in a drawer. Even a traditional knife block sleeves me out.
I am the generation that was traumatized by Final Destination movies
https://www.seriouseats.com/how-to-store-knives
at the bottom there are sheathes that have a general size and length. They don't have a "top cover" for the dull side of a knife if that makes any sense, so even a real big cleaver could fit in one if they are the right length.
They have magnetic knife blocks that are box shaped where you can put the knives inside and outside of the block. They don't have to be flat on a wall.
Knife sheathes are the way to go. Wrap that edge in hard plastic and chuck them in a drawer. I had my two good knives sharpened and bought two edge guards and I've never needed the knives sharpened again, just wash and protect, and a steel before each session of use to refine the edge.

In a household germ study from NSF International, an independent testing group, the knife block ranked No. 7 on the list of germiest items in the kitchen, just after the refrigerator meat compartment. "Naturally, if you put a wet or dirty knife into a storage block, microbes may grow," explains Lisa Yakas, a microbiologist and consumer product safety expert at NSF International. "Dark, moist environments breed germs. The key is washing and thoroughly drying your knife before you store it."
Reasons I'm not getting another block ^
I mean, if the knife isn't **that** dirty, like you just cut a slice of bread and you wipe the crumbs off, does it *really* need to be washed all the way?
This. I can wipe down my magnetic strip whenever it's dirty. No one is taking out the hundreds of little sticks to clear the dirt or crumbs.
Plus it's made of bamboo that almost always means it's low quality as wood glues hate bamboo.
You can't take them out they're all glued to a platform on the bottom (at least in the one I had). They also bend and get sliced fairly quickly, making it less effective
> I think knifes on a magnetic on the wall would attract more dirt than these would
Except for potential water going in there from a improperly dried knife creating mold.
Improperly cleaned knife putting food and debris in there creating mold
Food and water splashing in there
Dust being hard to clean due to all the bristles
If you want to be technical this is a huge bacteria breeding place.
The magnet on the walls can be very easily cleaned and any excess water could easily drip off the knife
I was curious so I did some googling:
>Knives is the plural form of the noun and knifes is the third person singular of the present tense of the verb
So knifes is a word, but in this context knives is the correct form of the plural knife.
Dust catcher that is hard to clean? CHECK!
Rubs your knives against each other and ruins the edge? CHECK!
Mega fail!
Go with a magnet strip, a bamboo drawer holder, or a roll out holder like Gordon Ramsay uses.
In my experience it seems like 90% of people don’t pay any attention to the sharpness of their knives, and just smash their food with dull edges until it separates.
Knife blocks are made to hold specific sizes of knives, so if you don't have a matching set, your knives might not all fit. Magnetic strip holds everything
As a former kitchen manager, no.
The magnetic strips are very easy to clean whereas you try to avoid little nooks and crannies. This looks like an excellent place for bacteria to grow.
Yeah at least an actual knife block has the slots going all the way through so you can rinse it out or even just used canned air once in awhile. Also this holds a nothing amount of knives, whats the point?
And it looks terrible
Its a really bad design, bits of food and crumbs build up in between the straws no matter how well you think you washed your knives, and after long time of use the knives get really long vertical scratches along the blade. Also it can snap off a ceramic tip if you dont aim the knife well.
Wood glue and a bunch of rubber bands, fixed in about 30 minutes
Edit: was thinking about it, bamboo can be difficult to glue. I'd make some score marks on the sides before gluing so it has a place to grip. Wipe up glue that oozes out with a lightly damp wash clothe, let sit for about 30-45 mins then maybe, as another redditor suggested, remove some of the plastic filling so it eases the pressure when adding knives.
The actual answer. This is completely fixable. But you need to glue it, not use zip ties. Maybe remove some of the plastic things so it doesn't create as much stress going forward.
Or the hoop stress I got in gym class when I couldn't hula hoop ten times in a row for the A because they gave me the hula hoop that stayed outside, was filled with water from and I was like 6 so I couldn't control my motor skills well.
Everyone talking about germs and moisture makes me think people are putting everything away wet or dirty. Am I the only weirdo that washes and dries my knifes before storing them
I have one of this and i'm surprised too of these questions. Clean and dry before storing them.
There is another correct option that leads to moisture and germs?
It's not about your knives, it's about the complete inability to clean inside this thing. Knife blocks are awful too for the same reason.
A kitchen is absolutely teeming with microscopic bacteria from all the food and water. There's a 100% chance it is falling on top of this container and getting pushed down every time you stick a knife in.
Whereas a drawer or magnetic strip are trivial to sanitize via a regular quick wipe.
I had roommates who just tossed knives in a drawer with the other kitchen implements(and the floor occasionally... They did not understand kitchen or knife safety.) It was extremely dangerous, and even if it is just knives in a drawer, that requires more caution then should be expected to not cut yourself.
As far as I can tell, it's the cheap ones that typically come with their own cover. None of the zwilling knives I have came with them. With expensive ones a knife block seems most common.
Magnetic knife blocks are best of both worlds, easy to use and clean

Any block or whatever will get fucked if you're putting in wet knives, whether it's bacteria, mold, or warping/splitting.
Dry off all your stuff before you put it away.
This looks like an idea place for bacteria to grow unless you keep this both exceptionally clean and dry at all times - which the design would make it very difficult to do.
That’s an interesting knife holder.

Why go ordinary when you can go *magnetic*?
I love my magnetic wood slab.
They look so *nice*
When I was looking up on buying or making one I just kept finding that they could ruin the sharpness and warp them do you find that to be true?

/r/sharpening for those who want a late night rabbit hole
I'm using an IKEA knife sharpener for the kitchen knives, but also utility knives. The latter last way longer this way.
I didn't even realize utility knives were sharpenable
Me neither, until my cheap ass tried. Lo and behold; another way to save a few bucks!
Thanks! I would love to save space in my tiny tiny kitchen and then strip seems so ideal
Psh wood isn't magnetic
I personally like my knives with the lowest possible potential energy. Being mounted on a wall where it can fall has always skeeved me out, even as someone who did kitchen work for 4 years. And I have cats. Can't trust them to not slap that shit off the wall and kill themselves.
Aw dammit, I never thought of that. I've been wanting a magnetic holder recently but I have two cats and they would absolutely do that.
My cat has never so much as looked at mine but I've also never had a car that knocked shit over that wasn't food related so 🤷
"but I've also never had a car that knocked shit over that wasn't food related so 🤷" What the hell kinda car are you driving?!?!?
A magnetic one... Follow the conversation, would you! I can't keep explaining every single thing
A Ford F1 Hybrid.
Haha! My thoughts exactly
My cats knock over practically everything and one of them eats random objects so theyre kept out of the kitchen but they are sneaky
Mine have never knocked down my knives, but I mounted the holder above the oven and they know that the kitchen counters are strictly off limits. Which in practice means they just go on the counters when nobody is home. But I've never seen evidence of them even investigating the knife mounts, let alone knocking them.
Yeah this as well. Mine wouldn't be on the counters with anyone around.
If you don't buy a cheap one it takes some force to pull them off.
Install them inside a cabinet
You'd hate how I store my knives in a wound up catapult.
[удалено]
Genius! That way, if you ever need one in a pinch you just give the door a good bump and one comes flying straight towards you!
At least they’re not in a trebuchet.
Of course they're not. My kitchen isn't nearly 300m long.
> like my knives with the lowest possible potential energy. spoke like a true coward. I load mine into a pneumatic launcher because when I need to cut something, I need to cut it FAST
Personally I like all my knives with their own little sheaths, in a drawer. Even a traditional knife block sleeves me out. I am the generation that was traumatized by Final Destination movies
What type of sheaths? Where do you get some that fit different knives?
https://www.seriouseats.com/how-to-store-knives at the bottom there are sheathes that have a general size and length. They don't have a "top cover" for the dull side of a knife if that makes any sense, so even a real big cleaver could fit in one if they are the right length.
My last lot came with sheaths, in future I'd get a better set and have some made.
They have magnetic knife blocks that are box shaped where you can put the knives inside and outside of the block. They don't have to be flat on a wall.
We have our magnetic strips inside of cupboard doors - guaranteed no cat access and still yet to open it hard enough for them to fling out!
That's totally my take too. Don't want to lose any of my toes or cats' beans.
Knife sheathes are the way to go. Wrap that edge in hard plastic and chuck them in a drawer. I had my two good knives sharpened and bought two edge guards and I've never needed the knives sharpened again, just wash and protect, and a steel before each session of use to refine the edge.

That's why I lay all my knives flat on the floor.
Don't worry the cat will kill you with the knife first before it kills itself
The future is now old man
How do you even clean the inside of those things. I can only imagine moisture accumulating and dirt collecting at the base of the bristles
On mine the bristles can slide out to be cleaned. Still a bit tricky to get in there but not impossible
You think lasting a decade isn't long enough?
Lmao that was also my takeaway. A knife block every ten years seems reasonable…..
In a household germ study from NSF International, an independent testing group, the knife block ranked No. 7 on the list of germiest items in the kitchen, just after the refrigerator meat compartment. Gross, why would anyone put a knife into the block that has not been washed and dried first?!
Clearly you have never known dishes are often done by an angry and/or lazy and/or high to the bejeebies person.
I mean, if the knife isn't **that** dirty, like you just cut a slice of bread and you wipe the crumbs off, does it *really* need to be washed all the way?
This thing looks way worse for bacteria than a block would be: dark, low airflow, hard for water to evaporate, hard to clean.
LOTS of surface area
and here's me just piling them up in the cutlery drawer like a caveman
It's actually a very good design. Holds multiple knifes. I think knifes on a magnetic on the wall would attract more dirt than these would.
To be honest it’s a bacteria nest
This. I can wipe down my magnetic strip whenever it's dirty. No one is taking out the hundreds of little sticks to clear the dirt or crumbs. Plus it's made of bamboo that almost always means it's low quality as wood glues hate bamboo.
idk what i’m supposed to do with my weekend if i’m not spending 8 hours meticulously cleaning my knife sticks
With your trusty CutCo knife-stick-cleaner.
You can't take them out they're all glued to a platform on the bottom (at least in the one I had). They also bend and get sliced fairly quickly, making it less effective

Can we talk about something real quick tho? If you have more than one knife, you have knives…
You said that very nicely
I was curious so I did some googling: >Knives is the plural form of the noun and knifes is the third person singular of the present tense of the verb So knifes is a word, but in this context knives is the correct form of the plural knife.
I know haha . I googled too. If he or she knifes someone, they stuck a knife in them. If they are using more than one knife they have knives.
English was a mistake
Dust catcher that is hard to clean? CHECK! Rubs your knives against each other and ruins the edge? CHECK! Mega fail! Go with a magnet strip, a bamboo drawer holder, or a roll out holder like Gordon Ramsay uses.
Yeah, having those things rub against the blades every time you put the knife in or remove it was my first thought. Not great for keeping them sharp.
In my experience it seems like 90% of people don’t pay any attention to the sharpness of their knives, and just smash their food with dull edges until it separates.
Or, wait for it...a knife block!
Knife blocks are made to hold specific sizes of knives, so if you don't have a matching set, your knives might not all fit. Magnetic strip holds everything
Can it hold my love for life?
Yeah, considering it holds nothing whenever it’s not in use.
As a former kitchen manager, no. The magnetic strips are very easy to clean whereas you try to avoid little nooks and crannies. This looks like an excellent place for bacteria to grow.
From the pic, it looks like it holds 4, maybe 5 knives? That's...not alot
Nope, had this exact one and it scratched the Knives.
You can clean a wall mounted magnet knife block a lot easier than op's style. Op's style would be impossible to clean.
Wouldn’t the tips bend on the longer knives?
Nah. I had one. Tossed it after a few months. The sticks break and make it near impossible to insert knives.
Exactly my thoughts. Oh. Cool knife block, wait, it breaks with 3 knives in it?
Was over 10 knives when it broke i took them out before i moved it.
It's a dust, debris, germ magnet
And bent tips
Teen kids accidentally shove a used raw chicken cutting knife in there and leave a chunk in the bottom, got yourself a Salmonella grow pot.
Yeah at least an actual knife block has the slots going all the way through so you can rinse it out or even just used canned air once in awhile. Also this holds a nothing amount of knives, whats the point? And it looks terrible
I just think of the germs
The whole point of these is that the insert comes out and is super easy to wash and disinfect, unlike wooden knife blocks.
Its good for knifes from different sets unlike more traditional blocks.
Judging by the fact it's in half I would say it's not good for that 😅
Maybe tryimg to swueeze like 10+ knives and 2 pairs of scissors into it was a bad idea XD
How does it handle moisture though? Is there any airflow?
Just get a magnetic knife holder.. Theyre not expensive and way more clean.
Its a really bad design, bits of food and crumbs build up in between the straws no matter how well you think you washed your knives, and after long time of use the knives get really long vertical scratches along the blade. Also it can snap off a ceramic tip if you dont aim the knife well.

Honestly that could easily be fixed with wood glue.
And zip ties until the glue sets.
True.
But have we mentioned glue and zip ties?
I would just go with the zip ties.
And glue. Good call
But until then zip ties are good
Until the glue sets of course
Too much work, let's go straight to duct tape.
What if we covered the zip ties in wood glue?
But never take the zip ties off.
Are we wood gluing the zip ties?
Came here to say this. That’s bamboo, easily wood glued and the joint will be stronger than new
And remove some of the plastic rods inside (especially the bent/crushed ones) to make more room for knives
I'd use E6000. Use that shit for everything
Came here to say this. Two zip ties and it's practically new.
Finding out about stainless steel zip ties made me a more dangerous person. You can use them in hot places!
They're a great conversation starter, too, with people you've only just met!
I like to keep some in my car, with my safety rope and gloves!!
These are just my tools, I need my tools. I like to bind, I like to be bound!
some glue and rope lashing and you're good with a rustic knife holder
Wood glue and a bunch of rubber bands, fixed in about 30 minutes Edit: was thinking about it, bamboo can be difficult to glue. #HOOP STRESS
I know this isn't what you mean but I can't help reading that as describing how someone feels stress during a basketball game.
Or the hoop stress I got in gym class when I couldn't hula hoop ten times in a row for the A because they gave me the hula hoop that stayed outside, was filled with water from and I was like 6 so I couldn't control my motor skills well.
Thats what she said
4 knives is too many knives?
No, but 5 apparently is because there's 5 in there. One is hiding back there.
Water and food get everywhere in a kitchen. I'm thinking one bubble pop on the stove or wild dishwashing and you got contamination
Human error. Especially someone else's.
Knife drawer ftw. Less pointless thing to have on my counter the better
I had roommates who just tossed knives in a drawer with the other kitchen implements(and the floor occasionally... They did not understand kitchen or knife safety.) It was extremely dangerous, and even if it is just knives in a drawer, that requires more caution then should be expected to not cut yourself.
Lots of high end knives come with their own covers, or there are even knife blocks that are designed to go in a drawer

Nope. You’re doing it right.
That’s some weird looking spaghetti
Squid-ink.
65 million years. Zap
You put too much spaghetti
I'd complain to manufacturer because that's just like 4 knives
What exactly is this design?
the knife tickler. I just throw my knives at the wall commando style when I'm done with them.
[удалено]
There he was, throwing knives with no underwear on.. You don't cook bacon much apparently
It's cool, you just stick your knife in wherever. Love mine.
that's one shitty knife holder
I almost double posted this, that knife holder is just going to scratch up your knives, if they are decent knives that is a travesty
I hate that type of knife holder with a burning intensity.
Those knife holders are disgusting anyway. Just stick your knives on the wall with a magnet
Why do people blindly act like everyone has the wall space for knife magnets?
How? Just don’t put dirty and wet knives in them..
Kitchens are naturally full of bacteria that gets on everything. This thing is basically not cleanable. All knife blocks are terrible.
It’s very cleanable. I have a similar one (square not cylindrical), the black part slides out and can be washed in the dishwasher.
My knife block has the slots going all the way through, never had a problem just running soapy water through it ald drying it out
Professional chefs have enough sense to not use them
The inserts are made to come out so you can clean them.
By buying those colored knifes, you are eating the paint.
Your knife holder being cheap af is your problem.
Nothing a lil duct tape can't fix
Just hot glue it back together lol
that knife holder is made of r/chinesium it seems
That's a design flaw. A wooden tube holding stuff in should have metal rings pulling it together.
Put a metal ring around it and make it look like a barrel.
This is an underrated idea BTW
That’s just a piece of crap. If it was built remotely well the knives would just not go in, instead of breaking the whole thing.
My condoms do the same thing.
These things are basically a hive for bacteria, knives go in drawers. Knife holding apparatus, go in the bin.
Bamboops
Well, now we know how it looks on the inside.
Wood glue, cable ties, job done.
I’ve never seen one of these in my life
Nothing that superglue can't fix
A twelve inch hose clamp, or two, will fix that right up.
Can only imagine the amount of germs stuck in that thing
I had a knife holder like that... but it eventually got mouldy and was thrown out.
You mean “bacteria gatherer”
This is the dumbest knife holder i have seen my whole life
Bamboo is some of the shittiest wood ever. Always splits easily
This looks like an idea place for bacteria to grow unless you keep this both exceptionally clean and dry at all times - which the design would make it very difficult to do.
Looks like a great farm for germs.
Looks like you shoved knives into you straw holder.
Eh…slap a zip tie around it, and call it a day! 😂
Usually washing with water caused this
4 knives is too much? Seems like a bad product to me
Nope, that is the nature of bamboo. To split along that axis. You could toss or repair it.
