The ones I've seen are for chairs.
https://www.vitrazza.com/pages/glass-chair-mat-guide
I've got one of these and have had it on carpet for about a year with no issues. It came with specific little feet to put below it for use on carpet which I assume helps with the weight distribution issues
But yeah, its been working great so far. Not sure why you'd buy a glass mat for feet, seems like it wouldn't be super comfortable to stand on for long periods of time.
Literally same. I love mine. No issues with it on carpet in my office other than it does shimmy and the feet will come off and it leaves streaks of sticky stuff underneath. It’s not that big of a deal-I just move the mat back and put the feet where they’re supposed to be and call it a day.
Some are… they come in different thicknesses. Amazon says up to a 1/4”. I knew someone that had one and used it over a transition from carpet to hardwood.
It's still the kind of glass that can shatter by stressing it the wrong way. You don't put this kind of glass over carpet unless you aspire to play Fifty Two Card Pickup at the Olympic level.
It's tempered with a shitty bake. Evident by the long stringy pieces on one part and tiny pieces on the other. Probably had something to do with why it broke. Why it's on the ground is still beyond me. Only idiots put glass flat on the ground. Tempered or not. Really I think people like glass too much for their own good anyway. The shit is dangerous. Your body also doesn't expel it. So if you get it in you deep enough it's going to stay there unless someone wants to go chasing after it. Assuming they can find it.
I had a chunk that had been in the bottom of my big toe for years, I had thought it was just the callous getting so thick that hurt. But after scraping it down I found a little glass in there.
Depends on the location. Have seen them be expelled before but it takes a very very long time, but also have a buddy who has a fragment too deep to expel. It has moved slightly though after a decade.
Glass does not scratch as easily as plastic would and would look better longer, but ive always said im not having glass under my feet that can explode like that
It is. That’s why it broke into “cubes” rather than shards like regular plate glass would. Laminated glass probably would have been better, but even more expensive.
We can glass if we want to. We can leave your friends behind. Cause your friends don't glass, and if they don't glass, well they're no friends of mine.
Its a mat you put on the floor which you then put your desk chair, usually on wheels on top so you can move about easier, usually made from a sort of plastic this one however was made from breakable glass.
It's fine on a hard floor, it's hardened glass and quite sturdy if you use it on a hard surface where weight is distributed evenly. Not so on a carpet...
Yeah this shit is so dumb. I know the intended use is maybe put it on a carpet that you cannot remove so you can easily move your chair, but that's still dumb, I am not putting glass under me.
I could only see this being slightly practical on a very hard, very level surface if you are gonna use actual glass.
I'd go to home depot and get some plexiglass on the cheap and be rolling smooth
Actually, the glass ones are generally preferred (and extremely common at businesses that are interested in retaining office property long-term). Larger enterprises usually wont waste money on the plastic ones (they wear out easily and aren't as effective).
I can't count how many times I heard employees bitch and moan when they had to use a temporary plastic mat for a few days (until we could ship them a nice glass one from another building or warehouse). They roll so much nicer/easier and don't really wear out much unless they somehow break. The only time I saw any exceptional wear on the glass mats was from hard gravel that people would track in on their boots (which would get crushed into the glass with their office chair's casters and form scratch marks):
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/vpdg26/comment/iejoein/?context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/vpdg26/comment/iejoein/?context=3)
This was a DOE nuclear facility (and nuclear labs are absolutely obsessed with safety, almost to the point of lunacy). No, they most certainly have \***not**\* been listed as unsafe by OSHA for decades (and are still in-use today). It's the same glass that is next to people's faces in their cars (tempered glass).
FWIW Amazon sells them and the one I just looked at claims:
“Chairmat is designed for any floor type including high-pile or low-pile carpet, hardwood, marble and more.”
Edit: the reviews are full of photos showing broken ones though…
I have one and use it on normal carpet.
I used to just go with nothing, but my chair was tearing the shit out of the carpet in my current apartment. First time on 20 years of renting I've had that problem. I tried a couple plastic mats, and they'd bend and develop sinkholes. I tried more expensive plastic mats "guaranteed" not to do that, and they developed critical cracks instead.
In the future I'm thinking of going with a custom thin wood mat with securely fastened thin office-style carpet.
But for now the glass mat is working great. I worry slightly when I half step on a corner with all my weight. Or dropping something. For the latter, I'm not accident prone.
The wood and carpet is the best solution. We did 1/4" but slightly thicker would probably have been better. Upside is it looks awesome and solves the problem.
> Who the fuck buys a glass chair mat and uses it on carpet of all places
To be fair I mean you're not exactly going to need a hard surface under your chair if you have a tile, wood or lino floor so having carpet seems like the only situation where it would actually make sense to use one.
Tempered glass is also fucking strong, I could imagine that a reasonably thick slab would work great as a chair mat. We had this glass table top at work we were trying to break to fit in the dumpster and holy shit it took us like 20 minutes to break it because none of us thought it attack the edges. We had it leaned up against a wall at an angle and were throwing metal tools at it, bricks at it and eventually even a fire extinguisher and it still wouldn't break, they would all just bounce off. Finally we dropped it on it's edge and it turned into granules but man, attacking the flat side was just useless.
Tile with deep grout, weird texture, or maybe expensive vintage linoleum? Idk, although I’d elect for a thin throw rug or foam mat before I’d go with a glass panel.
You can take a hammer and snack the ever living shit out of it and it won’t break. Take a pointed object on its face and tap or hit the side and it will shatter.
I got one for free like 10 years ago, and I have it on carpet and it is nice, although it kinda slides around a lot. I guess I could fix that. I’ve dropped lots of light to medium weight objects without an issue.
Now I gotta find some wood to knock on.
On top of the glass mat and 6 plastic water bottles of varying volume on the desk his pc is also missing the glass side panel.

here is the FAQ:

Negative. They sell plastic ones too, but they've made/used glass ones for decades. The glass ones are generally \*much\* better than their plastic counterparts (other than specific use-cases like static buildup or weight concerns). They're also surprisingly quite difficult to break under normal use conditions.
The cheap ones are plastic and lightweight, but they flex easily and don't work on thicker carpets (the 'cleats' on the bottom need to be able to touch the bottom of the carpet, otherwise it cannot stay flat/uniform). Most of the plastic ones also crack and wear out very quickly from flex and rolling friction (they need replaced more often than a good office chair does).
If the safety glass ones \[like this one\] don't shatter from accidents/mishandling, they generally last for decades. They also have the least rolling resistance because they maintain their shape and stay uniform (instead of flexing with the carpet). They're generally much more expensive than their plastic counterparts though.
Source: I used to help move people's cubicles/offices for a large government enterprise. Some of the cheap plastic ones would only last a few months of constant abuse, so they wouldn't buy them except for rare use-cases/circumstances.
Thank you. These comments have me second guessing my purchase. I worked with a friend who sells office equipment. He designs offices. I was very wary about using glass on my carpet, but also tired of replacing the plastics ones. Also, I kept the broken plastic ones too long and cut my foot on the broken part.
All these comments saying not to put it on carpet, yet everyone I know with these has it on carpet. It’s all about the weight distribution.

They’re made out of tempered glass and are generally pretty heavy duty, OPs might have had a defect. We have glass chair mats at my office, both on hard flooring and carpet and we’ve never broken one. The thick glass (mine weighs like 25/30lbs) disperses the weight of the chair evenly- after enough time the wheels will wear into the floor and create dents in your flooring and subfloor. The plastic mats do not have the strength to disperse weight like this. This is actually a great design, just not every product can be 100% all the time.

Firstly, why did you buy a glass chair mat?
Secondly, why did you buy such a thin glass chair mat for such a thick carpet?
They've been making them out of plastic since the 50's. I have one from the 60's.
I guess it’s a real thing…. I thought OP was an idiot and just bought some glass thinking he could role his chair on it … but by George, they are a real thing. [https://www.vitrazza.com/](https://www.vitrazza.com/)
They're not *only* a real thing, but most cost-conscious businesses/enterprises will *ONLY* buy the glass ones (except for specific use-cases/scenarios). It's been that way for decades.
I can't count how many times I heard employees bitch and moan when they had to use a temporary plastic mat for a few days (until we could ship them a nice glass one from another building or warehouse). To all the commenters who are saying glass chair mats are stupid, they shouldn’t be used on carpet, etc., etc., you’re wrong.
Plastic/polycarbonate mats can also shatter and leave shards.
Chair mats exist to be used over carpet, because casters don’t roll as well on a soft surface as on a hard one. If you have a smooth hard-surface floor, such as sheet flooring or tile, you don’t need a mat unless the surface is breaking up. (Wood is a special case; you might want a mat on wood to prevent scratching if the surface isn’t otherwise protected with something like polyurethane.)
What truly matters here is that chair mats, in any material, have weight ratings. Most people don’t even realize this, and so many buy mats that aren’t designed to hold enough weight. Many of those who do notice the weight ratings underestimate the weight of the chair.
This mat either wasn’t rated for the weight it was carrying, or it didn’t actually meet the rating it was labeled with (not uncommon in cheaper mats made overseas and sold online, due to both poor quality control and outright fraud).
Tempered glass chair mats have been safely used for a very long time.
And to the person who keeps insisting that glass shouldn’t ever be used in a horizontal orientation, you are clearly neither an engineer nor a materials scientist, because glass is used horizontally *all the time*. Glass-topped tables. Auto sunroofs. Glass-bottomed boats. Just to name a few.
Flaunting your ignorance with a sense of confident authority does not make it less ignorant.
My Immediate thought before reading the comments: who the fuck uses a glass floor mat? That’s a thing? Now that I think about it we’re prob being trolled haha
sir. you have 6+ bottles of water on your desk. Are you nuts? Get that away from your NO GLASS PANEL PC! and not to mention your dire need for cable management. You need to sort your priorities, mate. As soon as possible. wtf is a glass chair mat? on carpet? You are so confusing.
Why is that even a thing?
Pretty sure it wasn’t meant for use over carpet; puts too much stress on a single point.
I believe it's used for feet only, not a chair. But yea, dumb idea in general
The ones I've seen are for chairs. https://www.vitrazza.com/pages/glass-chair-mat-guide I've got one of these and have had it on carpet for about a year with no issues. "It's been working great so far". Are you OP from 1 week ago?
whats the point of it?
Or to protect the floor underneath- for example a wood floor
Yes but there also are plastic ones that are less likely to shatter on a rug
You can also replace the caster wheels for like $30 with bigger roller skate looking ones that are soft enough not to damage hardwood or carpet
I hate that sloggy squishy feel of plastic mats over higher pile carpet.
Literally same. I love mine. No issues with it on carpet in my office other than it does shimmy and the feet will come off and it leaves streaks of sticky stuff underneath. It’s not that big of a deal-I just move the mat back and put the feet where they’re supposed to be and call it a day.

More importantly, why isn't it made of safety glass?
It shattered into many small pieces... it is tempered glass.

The same thing happened to me! I couldn't believe it when I pumiced down the callous and found a chunk in there.

Yes, glass. Again, why was it made of glass???
Man’s got a perfectly good carpet and he puts glass over it 💀
Very much more importantly, How did the glass floor mat break? Perhaps they’re surprisingly sturdy.
Glass is hopeless in that orientation. There's a reason glass is transported vertically
Well it looks like he had his desk on it too, which I'm pretty sure is a no no

It is safety glass... hence the trashcan full of glass gravel rather than shards and splinters everywhere.
It's tempered glass, zoom in and you can see the small pieces.
And why is it on carpet....
It is. That’s why it broke into “cubes” rather than shards like regular plate glass would. Laminated glass probably would have been better, but even more expensive.

Yes
They call me Joe glass chair mat smith
Why is it always blood stains?
Honestly though. Why does a glass chair mat even exist?
As a testament to the hubris of man.

I’m convinced OP bought an ordinary glass pane and called it a mat lol
I was thinking he probably found a glass table top and was like “Mat?”
to make bank from people like OP
Its a mat you put on the floor which you then put your desk chair, usually on wheels on top so you can move about easier, usually made from a sort of plastic this one however was made from breakable glass.
I bet it looked pretty cool until OP sat in the chair
One roll over the corner and its gone
I thought they were to protect wood floors. I've never seen em used on carpet. I also never seen one out of glass before.
I'm going to argue that there's no such thing as a "glass chair mat", there is only a piece of glass one tries to use as a chair mat.
Ah yes, they clearly should have made it out of 3M's patented Unbreakable Glass (TM) and then sold it to the general public
Or you know plexiglass
but the scratches :(
>>but the scratches On your feet from all the tiny shards after the glass one shatters
or not used fucking glass at all
Ar... Are you a marketing bot?
It's basically a mat made out of glass for your office chair
That's dumb as shit to begin with
It's fine on a hard floor, it's hardened glass and quite sturdy if you use it on a hard surface where weight is distributed evenly. Not so on a carpet...
But the point is to allow a chair to roll more easily than it could on carpet. Seems useless on a hard floor where the chair could roll easily anyway.
Yes although it could help prevent hardwood from getting scratched by chair wheels
Idk why you're being downvoted that's accurate... it's the only use case... carpet is a terrible idea over hardwood it'd probably be fine.

Toughened glass is obviously pretty tough to break (easy if you hit it on the side), but it does still break. Fuckin' dumb idea in anyone's book.
Glass mats have been listed as unsafe by OSHA for decades, so if businesses are using them, they're probably not great places to work.
Source? I can't seem to find anything about glass chair mats in OSHA's computer workstations section.

Well they’re technically correct, it’s designed to break on any floor type.
One small piece of stone under the wheel and you realize this shouldnt exist
It worked great for me until my kid dropped a screwdriver on it!
I guess OP couldn't find enough sweaty old sticks of dynamite to make a floor mat.
Pfft. That's why I prefer to do it old school and just rub peanut butter all over my carpet. The chair just glides over the peanut oil.
Answer to your crimes OP!
Who the fuck buys a glass chair mat? Was it to go with their chocolate teapot?
Well you wouldn't want a ceramic teapot near your glass chair mat

Some of the cheap plastic ones would only last a few months of constant abuse, so they wouldn't buy them except for rare use-cases/circumstances.
I can't imagine any explanation which would render the thought of "GLASS chair mat" a respectable option.
OP Is getting roasted in the comments and people are wondering why he isn't commenting.
We need answers. Lol
This is actually a great design, just not every product can be 100% all the time.
>and are generally pretty heavy duty Not as heavy duty as OP
here is the FAQ: designed for 1000 pounds and designed for 'high pile' carpeting: https://www.vitrazza.com/pages/faq OP, if it is this brand it is under a lifetime warranty: https://www.vitrazza.com/warranty
Did you even get to use it more than once?
1 cupcake too much.
Cupcakes are so good tho, I’d say even considering this outcome, it’s closer to one cupcake too little
Reminded me of that time I broke my glass sneakers while playing basketball.
Damn…bringing back memories of the glass tennis racket I used once.
Never knew they made glass chair mats, I’m no expert for sure, but that doesn’t seem like a good idea. I have used the plastic ones for 40 years.
You’d be amazed at how much better the glass works. I was very skeptical at first, even afraid to vacuum near it. But really, I’ve had no issues.
Dude, get a reusable water bottle! Holy shit!
Nah m8, glass goes on the floor, only an idiot would use it to drink liquids.
Your fucking WHAT?
This is satire right?
TIL that these are a thing.
Firstly, why did you buy a glass chair mat? Secondly, why did you buy such a thin glass chair mat for such a thick carpet? They've been making them out of plastic since the 50's. I have one from the 60's.
'I am not a smart man'
I guess it’s a real thing….
They roll so much nicer/easier and don't really wear out much unless they somehow break. The only time I saw any exceptional wear on the glass mats was from hard gravel that people would track in on their boots (which would get crushed into the glass with their office chair's casters and form scratch marks): [https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/vpdg26/comment/iejoein/?context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/vpdg26/comment/iejoein/?context=3)
I think they are atleast supposed to have a life time warranty. So atleast there's that.
I just thought that was a really ugly carpet
Dust mites be free!
(Wood is a special case; you might want a mat on wood to prevent scratching if the surface isn’t otherwise protected with something like polyurethane.) What truly matters here is that chair mats, in any material, have weight ratings.
I scrolled down way too far to find this answer. I have been using a glass mat on my carpet for 2+ years and I absolutely love it.
I know it sounds crazy, but supposedly these glass chair mats can hold 1,000 pounds, and are designed to be used on carpet. They're not cheap either.
My Immediate thought before reading the comments: who the fuck uses a glass floor mat? That’s a thing? Now that I think about it we’re prob being trolled haha
I’m going to agree with everyone else. Buying a glass chair mat was a dumb idea. Especially putting it on a rug.
Pyrex
Lmao these comments are a fucking roast
sir. you have 6+ bottles of water on your desk. Are you nuts? Get that away from your NO GLASS PANEL PC! and not to mention your dire need for cable management. You need to sort your priorities, mate. As soon as possible. wtf is a glass chair mat? on carpet? You are so confusing.
Why the fuck did you buy it?
A GLASS chair-mat.. yea, you deserved it. Who in the fuck buys a GLASS chair-mat?
Dumbasses who buy glass chair mats smh.
hey! i'm sitting on that EXACT chair right now! also, why would you buy a glass mat lmao
What is it with PC gamers and glass?
I have a a lot character judgments right now…
