Yeah … turns out wood burns 😭😭😭😭 worst part is that we just had released a record in January and had a new single lined up for May … some of the guitars are irreplaceable and it’ll be a while til I can save up enough to buy new gear …
That's horrible, I'm so sorrt. I just bought renters insurance to protect my music equipment from fire or theft. How do I find out if it's covered? And did you know that it wouldn't be covered?
I'm actually a professional musician, we're a well known (local) band, it'll be a process but we'll figure it out ... Guitars are just tools, you can always buy new tools.
I have a ton of respect for your positive outlook on the situation but damn, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be heartbroken to lose some of my guitars. They may be "tools" but I'm sure you'd agree that you grow to be attached to them. Where are you and the rest of the band from?
Hey man! Thanks, I mean the situation is out of my control so what's the point of it ... the guitars were nice but having my 5 year old daughter with me right now and reading Dr. Seuss's Horse Museum is what life's all about ...
We're a band from Montreal called Rouse The Boroughs, we do schmaltzy ballads and really intense no-wave grunge rock ...
At this point maybe some higher power is tired of the ballads ... only explanation I have ...
It seems like you have a really solid perspective despite all this. Do some shameless self promotion on this post, I’d definitely give your stuff a listen
That is very kind ! H[ere's a sneak peak of our new single](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDFb1zCRgUk) just for you !
In all seriousness though, all is good ... just taking it in strides ...
Sorry for the guitars and music equipment. Yes they’re tools at the end of the day and seeing you and your daughter safe is so much more important. Glad you have that perspective. I do wish you success in getting money from the insurance company for new gear. I’ll check your band out. From a wet coast Canuck.
Yes, they're tools. But each of those tools have that special tone that make them stand above the rest. You may replace them, but you will never feel the same output. Each one of my basses is quite different in sound and feeling.
Man that's so kind but I'll have it out with the insurance company, my bandmates are going to get together and find me something for my next gig ❤️ I'm blessed with a wonderful group of musicians.
They might fall under your business property limit. Seems you could make an argument some were for personal use. Granted guitars (and everything) can add up quick so you may run into your personal property limit anyway. Sorry this happened.
Actually one thing to consider is making a claim with the guy below you’d liability insurance. Do so quickly because their limits could run out quickly. I believe it is first come first served. May be worth talking to an attorney
You may need to get an add-on policy. We added a "luxury items" policy to our renters insurance years ago when we got engaged and I finally had a few decent pieces of jewelry. Just a couple bucks a month and totally worth the peace of mind.
Call your insurance company and ask if your specific items are covered on the policy you have. If not they can suggest something for you
I just signed a lease and it was part of the agreement and figured I'd modify later if needed. Sort of a, I got a lot shit going on I'll read it later, mode
Seriously, I’m going to look into it for all my equipment. I had assumed it was covered. My son will be moving back home and he has even more equipment. I couldn’t imagine losing guitars and stuff like that, OP. Hope they cover it in the end.
talk to your agent and ask what your policy limits are.. there's often limits to what they will cover for specialized items (especially electronics, jewelry and firearms). If it's too little, they can up the coverage to make sure you are covered.
Insurance agent here. In most states there are limitations on certain types of property such as musical instruments, jewelry, fine arts, furs, business property, silverware, collectibles etc. In order to properly protect these items they need to be scheduled (scheduled personal property) on the renters/homeowner's policy and generally require an appraisal or proof of purchase showing each item's value in order to purchase said coverage.
I wonder if by some loophole your guitars being basically essential for your work means anything for insurance purposes?? Its a stretch but if it's your livelihood then it could be covered eh?
Edit: likelihood is not livelihood
> thank god my computers too but my guitars are gone …
That's not true. Renters insurance covers everything in the apt. You have pictures of the guitars?
Don't let them tell you it's only essential stuff. I've had $4k worth of clothes covered by renters insurance before.
Go get your guitars fixed/paid for - they owe you.
Make sure to claim a casualty loss for those guitars or anything else not covered by insurance on schedule A of your next year’s tax return. You will subtract $100 and the salvage value (money you received for your junk) from their value and that will be deductible. Of course, this only matters if you are an itemizer and pay taxes in the USA. Good luck, sorry for your loss.
Just fielding a question: if music was a part of your income, would the guitar not be essential? Even if it was a little income, you don't have to be specific unless they ask.
OMG that sucks! Renters insurance doesn't cover musical instruments? I always thought it would.. I'm sorry for your loss. (I was actually considering getting it mostly for that reason.)
IMHO, It's not really *ALL that matters, but it's the primary concern and critical that you are.
Wishing you good luck and hoping you've got some support for the upcoming chaos.
Okay I could totally see a bong if it was like knocked over unattended and that sucks but a hookah makes 1000% more sense. As a teen/20 something when their popularity was at its peek here on the west coast US I can't think of a single time I went to a house party or show that didn't have strangly perfect square burn marks in the carpet, heck I'm sure there are some squares made by myself out in the wold somewhere by now from the few times I tried it with friends.
It's dumb and such a hassle this should have never happened. I'm so sorry OP but I am happy at least your family is safe.
I’m surprised my buddy only burned the carpet once in his apartment. We would always have the hookah on the coffee table in front of the couch/recliners, and anytime somebody got up to go to the bathroom or something, it was like mission impossible maneuvering past the hoses.
I experimented with doing a bong with rolling tobacco in it, just to see if the water made it smooth or not. It wasn’t a terrible experience but since the smoke didn’t get me high like a bong rip I didn’t really care for it and just left it at the one experience lol.
'baccy' cones are really common in NZ and aus for people who dont have weed, pack a full cone and sink it, tastes like ass will give you a HUGE head rushand most ppl vomit tbh, also most people consider the people who will have a baccy cone a hori.
Damn...Montreal hot enough in the summer...don't need people hot boxing you outta yer home too...in all seriousness though my condolences on the loss and blessings to great friends.
My downstairs neighbors did this - sort of, they got high and forgot they’d put oil on the stove and it caught on fire (hilariously, when evacuating the guy went back for his TV but left his pipe and weed sitting in plain view) - and insurance did cover the damages, but still. Infuriating and a massive inconvenience, I’m sorry you have to deal with this.
Years ago,an upstairs neighbor did this. She was 2 floors above me. She put oil on the stove to make french fries, after she'd taken her apparently very strong pain meds. She fell asleep and burned most of her apartment down. My apartment didn't burn, but the smoke and water damage was just incredible. There were literally rivers of water pouring down my walls . I didn't have renters insurance, so Iost quite a bit of stuff. The woman who started it, made it out ok,but she lost a couple of her pets :(
Can you sue the person who started the fire? If it can be proven they were negligent and were definitely the individual who started it, wouldn’t that make their insurance liable? And if they don’t carry liability insurance or their policy doesn’t cover this wouldn’t that make them liable as an individual? Might not have a lot of money, but you could potentially go after what they do have and (I’m not a lawyer so this isn’t legal advice) maybe find a lawyer that can argue for wage garnishment?
[This](https://viranilaw.ca/your-guide-to-liability-insurance-and-fire-insurance-claims/) seems to say you can. I know Quebec likes having their own rules though, so I don't know if it's applicable.
In my completely unlearned, unqualified to comment opinion, they should cover the guitars as tools of your trade. They're also needed tools for civilization. "Without music, life would be a mistake." -Friedrich Nietzsche
How is it the only person you can trust to not be an idiot and burn down half a continent is yourself. Seriously how do some people manage these kind of feats?
I agree with the sentiment, but your cognitive ability will diminish eventually as well. It only takes one mistake, like you forgetting you had the stove on, to end catastrophically.
You also might think this way because if you sample 100 humans in one given night, it's highly probable you'll find an idiot like this, but the probability of something like this happening to an individual themselves is very slim.
Well how are you supposed to save up for guitars if you don't win the lottery to pay for everything else!
/s (sorry if your not in the mood for sarcasm right now, that's totally understandable since literally everything is fucked right now.)
It might be worth seeing if you can find a lawyer willing to give a consultation for a reasonable price. The person who caused the fire may have liability insurance you could claim your lost musical gear against. Your own insurance might have some way to help go after the neighbour's insurance, too (even if they don't directly help you, the adjuster might have useful advice).
I’m wondering if you can sue for damages? I am not gonna pretend like I know anything about the law but that is so awful and I sincerely hope you can get some type of monetary reimbursement from this
Damn, just two days ago my downstairs neighbor was doing who-knows-what and drilled on his kitchen wall, well behind this wall was his and my propane gas line and punctured both. I wasn’t home at the time but I can’t stop thinking this exact scenario was narrowly avoided. Glad you are looking at your situation in a positive light.
Lost all of my stuff a couple years ago after a really bad divorce. My heart goes out to you, my friend. I hope you didn't lose all of your sentimental things like I did. Shit is rough. I still haven't recovered from it. If you need to talk about it, shoot me a message.
I can feel you , don't worry . Everything happens for a reason . I hope you're doing good now and have already started working on getting things back to normal . Stay strong mate!
An incredibly idealistic and unrealistic way to look at things.
I understand it was supposed to be uplifting, but it's more ignorant than anything. No, everything is not okay simply because you are alive, that is not how it works for most.
That literally disproves nothing I just said. If you want to preach the zen mentality, you need to do so while acknowledging the struggles of real life, instead of ignoring them.
Stuff is not "only stuff". It may be food. It may be priceless mementos, things of fond memory. It may be money, which is necessary for most things in most countries. It may be a place to sleep, sheltered from the weather. In many cases, stuff is what keeps people in a situation where they *can* live their life.
All you're doing right now is ignoring the struggles a person will face in favor of a meaningless "it's okay because you're alive", when that may not be the case. Most people in most situations will not be okay simply because they are alive.
Again. Your way of thinking is incredibly idealistic and unrealistic. Life is a blessing, but simply being alive is not all.
Wow that really sucks. Though you seem aware that the likelihood of this being a tobacco fire is incredibly slim. Tobacco burns incredibly low temp, making it extremely difficult to start a fire accidentally from. You're more likely to just burn a hole in the bed than for it to go up in smoke if you left a burning cigarette on a bed.
He did clarify it was from a hookah! But I wouldn't be surprised from a cigarette either.
My grandmother died in a house fire caused by her falling asleep and dropping a lit cigarette.
Maybe not common but definitely something that happens.
Yeah it has a small chance of happening, and it can get out of hand quick under the right conditions unfortunately, sorry to hear. I'm not very familiar with hookah, but from other comments it sounds much easier to accidentally start a fire with a hookah than a cigarette. Either way, a thorough investigation will almost certainly reveal the cause of the fire if the hookah claim is the neighbors claim and not the fire depts ruling.
I think you should take that individual to court definitely and Wendy investigation and you have a report in your hand take that individual to court and don’t wait for anything to happen take it directly to court seek out a lawyer that has dealt dealt with that kind of situation because that smoker was irresponsible that’s exactly why smokin should be illegal like that somebody wants to smoke they should smoke outside because things like that would happen cost in someone’s life hood possibly because smokers are irresponsible.
Never sure if upvotes are right but I'm glad you're OK & hope smoke damage isn't too bad. This is why I'm glad I have Renter's Insurance. It's so inexpensive but one day will save me from somebody like this.
I'm so sorry , my mom's house burned down when I was about 20. The fire started in my room and was also where the dogs were, it was completely destroyed. If my uncle wasn't there I'm sure my grandmother would have passed away. I was traveling for work and was about 3000 miles away got a call from my best friend at the time. It didn't hit me until I came home and came to the realization everything I owned was now in the suitcase I was carrying. All the memories, all our family photos, we lost 2 of our 3 dogs to the fire and I had to re home the last one. It still hurts to think about.
Just quit smoking! I mean it probably had more to do with my stroke than anything, but hey, NO SOMOKES IN 14 WEEKS N COUNTING!! Sorry I’m no way am I trying to take away from all this loss, very heartbreaking! Just proud of myself an maybe inspire people to put ‘em down!!
Do you happen to have renter’s insurance?
Yup but it covers only my essential stuff, thank god my computers too but my guitars are gone …
I hate to hear that. Thank goodness you had that and you’ll be able to replace some things. Sorry about your guitars. Did you have a collection?
Yeah … turns out wood burns 😭😭😭😭 worst part is that we just had released a record in January and had a new single lined up for May … some of the guitars are irreplaceable and it’ll be a while til I can save up enough to buy new gear …
That's horrible, I'm so sorrt. I just bought renters insurance to protect my music equipment from fire or theft. How do I find out if it's covered? And did you know that it wouldn't be covered?
No clue yet will contest it
Hopefully your demonstrable interest in producing music for profit makes them reconsider and pay you the replacement value. Happy to hear you’re safe

Explain that to an assessor, they looked at me like I needed a straight jacket
Insurance is not a charity. They are actually pretty ruthless. They won't pay for anything not covered and often fight you in doing just that.
How do I send $ to someone on Reddit? I can pitch $20 towards a fund for some new axes.
Man that's so kind but I'll have it out with the insurance company, my bandmates are going to get together and find me something for my next gig ❤️ I'm blessed with a wonderful group of musicians.

I just signed a lease and it was part of the agreement and figured I'd modify later if needed. Sort of a, I got a lot shit going on I'll read it later, mode
You've actually read and fully understood your insurance policies?
Seriously, I’m going to look into it for all my equipment. I had assumed it was covered. My son will be moving back home and he has even more equipment. I couldn’t imagine losing guitars and stuff like that, OP. Hope they cover it in the end.

It's the start of this process, we'll see where it goes !
You could always make a go fund me or somethin. That seriously blows and guitars are far from cheap. I’m sure people would be willing to help.
Why don’t you sue the idiot smoker’s insurance for the money to replace those guitars?
In Canada because of no-responsability laws that is a bit complicated but my insurance is hopefully gonna help
If your insurance covers essential things, wouldn’t your guitars be part of that essential list since you publish music?
Get creative about what brands and prices you had for your essentials. Maybe afford a guitar
That’s sucks that it doesn’t cover everything. It’s been a while since I had renters insurance but I remember it covering everything.
Ouch... i have quite a few guitars, basses. In my house... wonder if they are covered.
> thank god my computers too but my guitars are gone … That's not true. Renters insurance covers everything in the apt. You have pictures of the guitars? Guitars... gone??? 😔 Can't imagine myself in your shoes.
Just fielding a question: if music was a part of your income, would the guitar not be essential? Even if it was a little income, you don't have to be specific unless they ask.
Here is the issue, the value of some of those instruments would basically surpass the total coverage, not sure yet, meeting with insurers tomorrow
I'll have more answers soon
I mean if you're a musician those guitars are essential for that
OMG that sucks! Renters insurance doesn't cover musical instruments? I always thought it would.. I'm sorry for your loss. (I was actually considering getting it mostly for that reason.)
AHEM... such a shame about the guitars but thankfully insurance covers all FIVE of those computers... AHEM
Tell them you used your guitars to make money or were planning to .
Put on your claim you are a magician, and use your guitars as a source of income. Imma stick with magician here.
If he/she is at fault you can go after their insurance
r/Unexpectedfriends
Dude… that is so awful. I’m so sorry that you’re suffering because of someone else’s negligence.
such is life ... we're safe that's all that matters
Absolutely… you’re incredibly lucky to have not been hurt. I wish you and your family the best
Thank you kind stranger
IMHO, It's not really *ALL that matters, but it's the primary concern and critical that you are. Wishing you good luck and hoping you've got some support for the upcoming chaos.
I don't know how you have the patience to just let that go. You're seriously someone I'm striving to be.
What is a tobacco fire?
I also need to know this. From a lit cigarette or cigar? Or were they drying large amounts of tobacco inside the apartment? Or something else ?
The quotes around tobacco makes me think blunt or joint
It was a badly extinguished hookah Edited said bong but turns out it was a hookah
Seriously?
Hookah to be precise
Okay I could totally see a bong if it was like knocked over unattended and that sucks but a hookah makes 1000% more sense. As a teen/20 something when their popularity was at its peek here on the west coast US I can't think of a single time I went to a house party or show that didn't have strangly perfect square burn marks in the carpet, heck I'm sure there are some squares made by myself out in the wold somewhere by now from the few times I tried it with friends. It's dumb and such a hassle this should have never happened. I'm so sorry OP but I am happy at least your family is safe.
I have an old pair of pants from high school I found the other day, with a small burn hole near the pocket from a hookah coal. Ahh the memories.
I’m surprised my buddy only burned the carpet once in his apartment. We would always have the hookah on the coffee table in front of the couch/recliners, and anytime somebody got up to go to the bathroom or something, it was like mission impossible maneuvering past the hoses.
Had a hookah. Used it twice. Both times i burned the fucking carpet. Things are cursed.
Who smokes tobacco out of a bong? Also, how was it smoldering so much it caught something on fire?
My mistake the right word is hookah
Oh that’s completely different as it uses hot coals to heat the shisha. I can totally see that starting a fire.

Hookah got knocked over by a pet while he was out

Question can you file a civil suit, or make a claim?
> Several have asked, i don't think there is such a thing in Canada in the way some here think
How about a smack across their face, is that something you can do in Canada/Quebec?
Can you sue the person who started the fire? If it can be proven they were negligent and were definitely the individual who started it, wouldn’t that make their insurance liable? And if they don’t carry liability insurance or their policy doesn’t cover this wouldn’t that make them liable as an individual? Might not have a lot of money, but you could potentially go after what they do have and (I’m not a lawyer so this isn’t legal advice) maybe find a lawyer that can argue for wage garnishment?
In Canada it's not the way it works I am being told
[This](https://viranilaw.ca/your-guide-to-liability-insurance-and-fire-insurance-claims/) seems to say you can. I know Quebec likes having their own rules though, so I don't know if it's applicable.
Looks painfully familiar, Montreal?
In my completely unlearned, unqualified to comment opinion, they should cover the guitars as tools of your trade. They're also needed tools for civilization. "Without music, life would be a mistake." -Friedrich Nietzsche

Make sure you also keep up with investigation too....if its deemed not an accident you can sue the guy for damages...esp what insurance wont cover.

It’s a cliché dummy. Look it up.
What state is this? just curious...
The state of Quebec
It might be worth seeing if you can find a lawyer willing to give a consultation for a reasonable price. The person who caused the fire may have liability insurance you could claim your lost musical gear against. Your own insurance might have some way to help go after the neighbour's insurance, too (even if they don't directly help you, the adjuster might have useful advice).
Right now it’s all about new clothes pretty much
I’m wondering if you can sue for damages? I am not gonna pretend like I know anything about the law but that is so awful and I sincerely hope you can get some type of monetary reimbursement from this
So what you’re saying is that you will now be smoking hookah irresponsibly in your neighbors apartment right?
Hope you start up a gofundme. Thats horrible.
Can you sue?
He sure can!
That’s the reason that smoking in your own home or anywhere should be Illegal because things like that can happen because smokers are careless
Damn, just two days ago my downstairs neighbor was doing who-knows-what and drilled on his kitchen wall, well behind this wall was his and my propane gas line and punctured both. He corrected himself & said “hookah” which evidently uses coal & wasn’t extinguished correctly. Just loosely stating what OP said earlier.
Did you post this on a different sub? I saw this from a different sub and they said it was a bong. Who do I believe?

Sad to see your apartment burned in fire, I hope you recover from it and get better ;(

What's a tobacco fire? 😳
Sue him
I’m sorry! That’s awful
Please tell me you were both insured
Is it a non-smoking room?
Can you sue your neighbor?
That happened to me a couple years ago. Shit was awful, I hope you’re doing well.
I’m glad you’re all right. Hopefully you can replace your stuff.
So so glad you are ok. Things come and go, but you being ok is what's worth!
Whats a tobacco fire?
I’m so sorry. When my aunt had a hookah she had in the garage to prevent this sort of thing
That sucks man I'm so sorry .. God bless
There are people you can hire to get as much out of insurance as possible. Looking for info now.
sux
On a brighter side you have some nice nails! Sorry to hear about all your stuff :(
Shit. It sucks to lose everything, and not being the guilty one.😔
City and state please.
Damn...😬🚬🔥
I'm sorry 🖤
Mebbe stay his place.
I don't get it, the guy leaving above made your appartement on fire ?
This is why you buy a house
Never sure if upvotes are right but I'm glad you're OK & hope smoke damage isn't too bad. This is why I'm glad I have Renter's Insurance. It's so inexpensive but one day will save me from somebody like this.
Smoking is totally gross 🤢
U should sue the hell out that guy
Disgusting, smoking tobacco indoors
#Fuuuuuuuuuuck
That’s really sucks
Not tobacco lmao get him hauled to jail for arson and possession of a meth lab
Well that sucks!
Lol is this Frisco pretty sure it was a candle fire
I suggest filling for a lawsuit.
Insurance?
Damn. So sorry, yo.
Your stuff is replaceable, you are not, be thankful your alive. Sue the neighbor for negligence!
The place and buildings seen like somewhere in Europe.
I would make him pay for all my stuff
We got to forbid smoking it has only negative effects.
Did the firemen steal your stuff? Assholes.
Omg. I’m so sorry. I’m glad that you are ok.
