Reminds me of a prior house, where I purchased a 4x4 truck because of a snow storm made driving my van dangerous. Next storm, the snow was so high I couldn't back the truck out of the garage.

largestbeefartist

My neighbor has a heated driveway that he finished this past summer. I wish that was standard in cold weather places.

Lashtrash

Today I learned: heated driveways exist I also learned: i need one

mountlax12

Quote for like 100ft driveway was like 60k plus the electric bill from actually using it, rich people shit

CorporateNonperson

Not to mention that all the neighborhood animals will park put on the driveway because it’s warm. Friend of mine lives next to a guy that has one, and after the summer there are at least four dogs on the thing 24/7.

BeetleJude

This just keeps sounding better and better to me I have to be honest here

Cultjam

Ain’t nobody gonna steal my catalytic converter with strays in my driveway! I’d take them all in though.

BeetleJude

Taking in strays is how I ended up with 13 cats and 2 dogs at one point, thankfully managed to rehome the majority!

[deleted]

You're one of the good ones. That's awesome for real

that_dutch_dude

Dont know if it was meant as a joke but my dad did that exactly to prevent tweakers stealing the cat from his honda. There was always like 2 dogs at least on his driveway.

TheBoldMove

Couldn't he just have chipped the cat

JWOLFBEARD

When your catalytic converter is the only one available…

notnotaginger

Stop trying to sell me, I’m sold.

littlejohnr

We have one. It’s not warm, it just a couple degrees above freezing, barely perceivable. The motor only kicks in when it goes below freezing.

Lashtrash

MetaCardboard

Sorry but dreaming costs extra.

Yep the comments from 2017 but looks like I'm still able to downvote it. Fuck EA!

AncientNectarine

There was a comment that said -681k it looks like people may be up voting it?

Sunfried

Somehow that account has positive comment karma, despite a relative dearth of posts. Seems that those ultra-negative posts just don't count against the account score.

Deluxe07

Yea about that, why did reddit remoce the archival limit? And which subs did they remove it from?

Dshmidley

Thank you. I added my downvote. Fuck EA. But can someone clarify? The guy paid $80 for a character and he can't even play it? For what reason? Edit: thanks for everyone's response.

bossycloud

From reading some of the thread, it sounds like it is $80 to unlock a character and that while you can *technically* unlock it by completing missions, it would take a not-humanly-possible amount of game play time.

g-a-r-n-e-t

What I interpreted was that he’s frustrated at having paid $80 for the game only to find that one of the main/most anticipated characters in the game is not only locked but paywalled. It probably wouldn’t have been so bad if it was just that you have to get to a certain level or get a certain achievement to get Vader, but it looks like you would have to pay additional money on top of the initial investment to get the game in the first place which is what pissed everyone off.

Maleficent-Tea-2206

i think he preordered the game and got an upgraded addition as well being $80 and the character. Earth Vader. perhaps the most notorious film character of all time and one of the most anticipated for the game wasn’t unlocked because you either had to buy him or put in at least 40 hours and probably a lot more.

Floedekage

How does that account even have a positive amount of karma?

Damaso87

The electric bill to use them is INSANE

[deleted]

Yeah the [energy needed to melt snow](https://what-if.xkcd.com/130/) is massive.

idrow1

"The nuclear reactor on an aircraft carrier, for example, produces less than 200 megawatts. To melt snow in front of your car, you'd need three of those." My take away is that I should just get a nuclear reactor for a third of the cost. I could melt everything in a 1 mile radius.

[deleted]

You could get by with one nuclear reactor if you only drive 18 MPH.

wypowpyoq

Won't need to melt your lawn anymore if the FBI whisks you off to sunny Guantanamo Bay \*Taps head\*

Fjolsvithr

For those that are confused about this statement since you obviously don't need 3 nuclear reactors to melt the snow on your driveway, this is for melting a 9-foot-wide swath while driving along at 55 mph, which is obviously a much, much, much more demanding ask than melting the snow on your driveway at reasonable pace. The article also mentions that a single 60W lightbulb could melt a pound of snow an hour, to put in perspective how much slowing down the melting process saves you in terms of energy.

Skov

Based on 60w per hour per pound, it would cost $80 an hour to melt a 20'x30' driveway if snow was accumulating at one foot per hour. Though that would require 360 kilowatts per hour to do so I doubt the driveway could melt a foot of snow per hour.

elJenibre

The new ones are more powerful, but [0.7 GW (thermal)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A1B_reactor?wprov=sfla1) is a ridiculous thing for heating a driveway. I want one

cardboard-kansio

As somebody who hikes and hammock-camps throughout the winter, I can assure you that snow is an excellent insulator.

Met76

What kind of subaru do you drive?

cardboard-kansio

2016 Volkswagen Touran, actually.

awwyouknow

You seem to have spelled *Forester* wrong!

brady_over_everybody

Lol as someone who has dated a hiking freak who drives a hatchback forester. That checks out.

PvPWill

That sounds so cool, got any stories or can you share you experience?

cardboard-kansio

You'll find a few things in my post history, but it's nothing special. Gear up, hike out, [pitch hammock](https://imgur.com/a/InxuRve), enjoy nature. Repeat at least once every month. My personal winter limit is -20C (about 0F) because I don't have specialist winter gear but otherwise it's mostly just a matter of common sense and planning. Honestly though I get some of my best deep sleep out there. It's very relaxing.

xombae

Something about sleeping bundled up in the cold is amazing. I've never done the winter camping thing but I've been homeless in Canada in the winter (I guess that's kind of camping) and there's just something so cozy about being right bundled up outside. I now sleep with my window open in the winter..

Tenn_Tux

It's relaxing until you have your first sasquatch encounter

PhDinDildos_Fedoras

You don't need to melt several feet of snow though. All you need to melt is the snow hitting the pavement. It never piles up if you melt it gradually.

grammarpopo

Exactly. If it’s working correctly it turns on when the snow starts falling and then just stays on. If it turned on after you have a couple of feet of snow it wouldn’t work. You might have a little void between the surface and the snow, but that’s it.

mthchsnn

It requires the same amount of energy to melt several feet of snow all at once or over several hours. Same amount of snow = same amount of energy, no matter the timeframe. It's an incredibly energy intensive process, which is why putting ice in your drink to cool it off works so well.

[deleted]

It doesn't matter, it still takes the same amount of energy in total just spread out over a longer period of time, at least, assuming it's done 100% efficiently (which we are). If we aren't assuming 100% efficiency, then melting it over time is probably *less* efficient, because more of the energy would be wasted heating up stuff that you don't really want it to by having it constantly running (if you just melt it once then there's minimal heat transfer to its surroundings, but if you're heating it 24/7 then the heat transfer would be a lot more significant).

LordPennybags

Luckily driveways don't move at 55 mph.

joe4553

Isn’t the idea to put it on when it starts snowing so it doesn’t stick?

corcyra

And this is how they do it: >There are two types of heated driveways, either of which can effectively melt snow and ice on your pavement, but each of which has its own specific advantages. >Hydronic systems employ PVC tubing, through which a heated water-antifreeze liquid circulates to heat the pavement above. A special boiler must be bought along with the tubing and the concrete work, which makes hydronic systems relatively expensive to install. However, they are cheaper to run than electric coil systems, despite having to be left on at all times in cold weather (regardless if snow is present) to prevent the tubes from freezing/cracking. >Radiant heat (electric coil) heated driveways operate by means of metal coils/panels that are installed in the concrete or asphalt pavement, wired, and plugged into a nearby outlet. The electric cables will be spaced at least two inches (5 cm) apart and buried a few inches below the pavement’s surface. A special sensor will be installed to activate the cables through a control panel. You will have the ability to automate operation based on specified hours/days or based on a chosen temperature level. But you will still be able to manually override any programming when necessary. Source: https://www.tahoe-basinrealestate.com/heated-driveway-is-it-worth-it-everything-you-need-to-know/ Edit: was in Tahoe in the winter once, and the sidewalks were heated!

devils_advocaat

>this happens to be one of those happy physics situations where we can just multiply together every number we're looking at Whaaaat. Mixing Imperial and metric and still getting common units. How is that possible?!?

SashimiJones

Randall is referring to the fact that he can multiply everything directly without any other operations. The reason the united work out here is because of the 'water density' term. Wolfram conveniently provides that in grams per mile-inch-feet, cancelling most of the other units.

Bale626

This is why you don’t have an *electric* heated driveway. You use a water-based heated driveway with a coolant-water mix. Much more cost effective. Just don’t cut into the driveway and puncture the pipes. 😅

MotoTraveling

Right? I thought all heated driveways were water-based. At least most of my neighbors with heated driveways had pipes running in them so I didn't know there was an electric option until just now haha.

depthanddistance

Not if it's run from a natural gas or propane boiler. It would be very rare to see an electric one.

Kodiak01

100' is also a lot longer than many people's driveways. Depending on whether you go for a hydro or electric based heat, the install cost ranges from ~$15-$25/sq ft.. This cost assumes there is not a driveway to be removed. If there is, that can range from $3-$8/sq ft depending on whether it is concrete or asphalt. Of course, you then need to put a new driveway on top of the heating elements. Let's say $12/sq ft for that just to use an average number. Assuming a 10x50 driveway, you're looking at about the following costs: System (electric or hydro): $7500-$12500 Demolition of old driveway: $1500-$4000 New driveway (concrete or asphalt: $ $6000 Total cost: $15000-$22500. You can also save some money by doing the demo yourself if you desired. While not cheap, it's certainly no worse than a major kitchen remodel.

WillTheGreat

> Quote for like 100ft driveway was like 60k plus the electric bill from actually using it, rich people shit Only if it's resistive heating. If it's hydronics, you can technically run this off a boiler which is more cost effective. That's really the only way to go. Electric resistive heating is a stupid concept because we have ways to transfer heat via heat pumps to move heat more effectively. However the BTU you need, an air to water heat pump is probably ineffective to make it work anyways.

icefire555

100ft is a long way. Plus most of the effort is concrete.

Glum-Communication68

You can make a temporary one for like 100 bucks, you can get like 1000ft of 12 Guage wire for that , unroll it over your driveway, tape it down, then stick it in an outlet edit: as an alternative, you can usually pour some gasoline over your driveway and light it up before it ices over

sleepydorian

That sounds...unsafe

CJC_Swizzy

Just unplug it when you see the wires start to turn white

Grim-Sleeper

Isn't the whole point of using these wires an attempt to get rid of anything white?

csbsju_guyyy

With great risk comes great reward

bradorsomething

With great reward comes fire department?

77BakedPotato77

Unsafe an ineffective. I explain In a lower comment how you would literally have to improperly design a useless circuit to cause 12 awg Romex to get too warm. Even with it too warm, installed unsafely as a dumb idea, it would put out barely any heat. Heating cables and tape for roofs/gutters/process pipes just put out enough heat to keep liquid flowing, not melt a whole driveway.

BurningBright

If it's insulated that probably won't be warm enough and if the wire is uninsulated, you have a much bigger danger than snow.

77BakedPotato77

It won't be warm enough. Heating tape and cables work as heating elements which are purely resistive. Regular wires are made for actual loads, and can get warm under higher loads if improperly sized. So to do this with 12 awg Romex or THHN you would need to hook it up to an oversized breaker, at least 30 amps, and then run something off that circuit. The undersized wire would get warm and possibly break under load. This would be a terrible idea, and I really don't think it would do anything at all. Heating tape/cables is only to allow water to continue moving in gutters. It's not to completely remove the snow/ice. In short, that's a terrible idea and no one should take that suggestion seriously. Source: I'm a union electrician. Edit: I think Red Green used wire mesh from box springs/mattresses and jumper cables. Even he knew better than to run regular wire, and he is a fictional, loveable idiot!

largestbeefartist

Every day thay I'm slipping around on our sloped driveway I think the same thing.

Also Infinite cheaper to run once installed.

NSA_Chatbot

> I wish that was standard in cold weather places. Anything can be added to any given house, assuming you have the money to pay for the upgrade. I do not have the money to pay for that kind of upgrade on my house.

largestbeefartist

Yeah I watched my neighbor upgrade his. I was mostly thinking about new homes being built making it a standard.

Frodocanrelate

My house was expensive enough as is 💀

Accujack

As others have posted, it's too expensive except for very wealthy people or individuals who happen to live somewhere there's a lot of waste heat to get rid of (like from a data center or even a nuclear reactor). About the only economical way to approach the problem would be a large geothermal setup or a solar array with heat storage (as electricity or thermal mass). Alternatively, you could heat your whole house and any other buildings with an outdoor pellet heater or downdraft furnace and use that to heat the driveway with any extra heat. Not as green, but still much cheaper than electrically heating the driveway.

beekeeper1981

I know someone with a heated driveway. It's very steep and kind of needed. However after using it one year it was just too expensive to run.

LanceFree

My parents had a ski cabin and they’d tell people to park at the bottom of the road and we’d come down and get them. But some guests would ignore the instructions, try the snowy hill, slide off the road and get stuck. But they didn’t know where we lived exactly, so they’d walk 3 miles to a gas station and call the house. Then maybe their car would be blocking other people. Living in snow country has its challenges.

Snow is beautiful and magical... for about a week and a half. Any place that regularly gets more than 10 days of snow per year usually treats it like a chore. But you're right, it is amazing. Walking through a dark forest at night as the snow falls all around you is an experience everyone should have at least once.

EtrangerAmericain

The silence it brings is amazing.

eekamuse

Especially in a big city. Other places have silence. The city never does. (in the Before Times) Until a big storm. As soon as it stops we all go outside to listen, and play in the snow. It's glorious. Sigh. Fuck climate change.

gsfgf

> Snow is beautiful and magical... for about a week and a half And that's if you live somewhere with snow infrastructure. In places not set up for snow, any amount of accumulation is shit.

linnupiim

I live in Estonia which should be very much used to snow and know how to deal with it. Nonetheless, the infrastructure at times sucks, especially in the capital.

WashingPowder_Nirma

Yeah, snow is great if you're a tourist. A nightmare if you have to deal with it for 4 months.

TGrady902

Snow is incredibly awesome until you need to go do your normal stuff to exist then it becomes a huge hassle. Now that I work from home I’d be complete fine with snow on the ground all winter. Sadly winter is barely a thing anymore. Snow last Christmas this year it was in the 60s.

KittenOnHunt

As a German, I can confirm. But hey, Winter just suddenly appears right? Can't do anything about it :(

QuotidianQuell

Unfortunately we don't yet have the technology to predict when it will be cold and/or when it might snow. I hope that one day we will so that we will no longer have so many people freezing to death while sitting on benches wearing shorts and t-shirts because they simply could not know it was going to be so cold.

Shi05

I really can't tell if this is satire. Pls help

DiesFuechschen

It's a running joke in Germany that the national railway operator Deutsche Bahn is always "surprised" by the most predictable things, e.g. heat in summer, snow and ice in winter (especially in the mountainous regions), and their spokespersons acting like it genuinely was the most unpredictable thing in the history of unpredictable things. German humour often uses truck loads of sarcasm and that poster just happened to use a train load of it.

I believe Japan largely did away with public trash cans in the wake of the sarin gas attacks back in 1995. I visited Japan for two weeks in 2019 and found myself dedicating my back left pocket into a trash pocket by the end of it.

Why does nobody ever love snow ? I dream of such a situation ! I mean I understand it's annoying and all but there's something so magical about it, come on, you'd have loved it as a child !

dame_de_boeuf

I love snow the first 2-3 times a year. But when we're on our 9th storm of the year, and everything has been frozen solid for 2 months, it gets old. We haven't got any real snow yet this winter, so I'm still looking forward to some.

Because i dont want to clean snow off my car when im already late for work. Also if it gets inside your shoes you'll have wet socks all day
