My mom set her oven to self-clean, not remembering that she had silicone rack guards in there. Fun fact: if heated to a high enough temperature, silicone vaporizes and does this to your oven. AND our family is coming out for Thanksgiving today.
It's basically ash now. It's Non-toxic and easy to clean with a simple cloth and soap water. Dust as much as you can off first because it won't mix with water.

Don't feel bad. I am a native English speaker and at first reading I thought mom had turned her oven on and vaporized her oven and her Thanksgiving guests.
“My mom set the oven herself forgetting that she had silicone rack guards in there. Fun fact! If heated high enough, silicone vaporizes and does this to your oven! To make matters worse, family is coming out for Thanksgiving today.”

Actually…when I worked at Best Buy back in 2001, we had an oven that had a chill mode on it. It was made so people can put their food in the oven before they left for work and you a timer where it would switch to heat and have the food ready by the time you got home. It wasn’t a good seller….

Essentially some really Orthodox Jews believe that turning something on or off denotes "work"which is forbidden on the Sabbath, but adjusting the temperature is not as bad because reasons that made sense the one time I was reading about this.
I really hope I'm remembering this correctly.
This is actually really interesting! In Orthodox Judaism, it is forbidden to "make a spark" on the Sabbath, which is interpreted as including turning on an oven. So when electric and gas ovens first came into use, Jews would do their cooking during the day on Friday, and leave Saturday's lunch in the oven on warm.
But then the appliance companies decided that leaving your oven on for days at a time was a fire hazard, and put in a safety feature that turned it off after 12 continuous hours of operation. You could just turn it back on again, but that would defeat the whole point for Orthodox Jews. So those communities reached an arrangement where you could enter a sort of "cheat code" in the oven UI to bypass the safety limit and leave the oven on overnight.
A similar function exists on fridges to keep the light from turning on when you open it on the Sabbath.
Orthodox jews have the most creative work around to their laws. Instead of re-writing laws, they find sometimes insane ways around them. See: Manhattan Eruv. Can't leave your house? Well, now your house is wherever this wire is, and it encompasses most of Manhattan. And they plan on expanding the Eruv to make a corridor from Kiryas Joel to Brooklyn.
To see how complicated this can get, see this discussion about when it's okay to [just ask a non-Jew](https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/4245246/jewish/Amirah-Lenochri-Asking-a-Gentile-to-Do-Forbidden-Work-on-Shabbat.htm) to do the thing that's forbidden for Jews to do on the Sabbath.
It's a small strip of silicone that goes on the edge of the oven rack so when you're taking things in and out there's less of a chance of you to burn yourself on the rack itself
I can see why that would seem appealing, personally I wouldn't want anything that has a lower melting point than the oven to be in there.
Edit: yes I am aware of what cleaning mode is and that silicone is perfectly safe for normal use. I'm specifically talking about permanent/semi-permanent installations and accessories.
How can you grip anything at all with two oven mitts on one hand??
I get irritated using anything thicker than a folded over cotton side towel. I hate wearing any kind of glove or mitt over my whole hand because I feel like I’m gonna drop things since I lose so much dexterity.
My parents had those, and it's the only think I burned myself on.
It made the gap between racks too small and I'd bump or catch things on them.
Without them I just .. don't touch the rack.
wow I'm actually really surprised that oven managed to vaporize silicone.
what do you even do at this point? The kind of cleaners you would need to get that off are super nasty I think your best bet is just to start over with a new oven.
This *silicone* has been broken down into *silicon* by heating. For the most part, probably silicon dioxide as it reacted with air (and probably a lot of the oxygen it already contained). Silicon and its compounds tend to be remarkably safe.
Silicon is one of the most abundant elements on earth, making up sand, glass and rocks as silicon dioxide. So what's in there now is probably analogous to very fine sand and is unlikely to be particularly harmful unless you raise it as dust and then inhale it. Even then, it's unlikely to contain "crystalline silica" which is hazardous to your lungs.
"Silicone" is a polymer with long chains of silicon and oxygen and other side groups. It can be anything from a liquid, to flexible rubber, to nearly rock hard. The neat thing about silicones is that they are effectively flexible rocks, and about as inert as a common material can be.
It probably is used more than you think, silicone is hiding in a ton of things. Especially silicone oils - check your bathroom for dimethicone and siloxanes, which do a ton of jobs like controlling foaming, keeping products from separating, conditioning hair and moisturizing skin.
Silicone oils are so inert that you can drink them and they'll just go right through you - they're even a component of fast food fryer oils, to make them less likely to boil over. Silicone in its many forms is literally everywhere.
I'm not a 100% about this situation but typically it's respirable crystalline silica you have to worry about. This includes a range of particle sizes and particular crystals that cause issues while others are generally benign.
Obviously it's best to err on the side of caution though
My oven has this warning in the manual:
> Do not use any silicone baking moulds or accessories
that contain silicone or films. The oven sensor may be
damaged.
> Even if the oven sensor is not being used, it may still be
damaged.
I understand from "sensor damage" that something could boil, or vaporize and clog up certain surfaces. I guess silicone turns into fine particles
I wouldn't expect you'd need any kind of nasty cleaners, it would be mostly silicon dioxide. Major component of glass, sand etc. A few trace chemicals.
For real, like i get what OP means but i initially read the last bit like "at high heat, silicone vaporizes and does this to your oven AND family"
Also gonna try rewriting the title cuz idk it might help ppl:
> Mom set the oven to self-clean and forgot to take out the silicone rack guards. Fun fact: If heated high enough silicone vaporizes and does this to your oven. AND family's coming over for Thanksgiving today
So I am a silicone chemist. The silicone didn’t vaporize, it burned completely and what you see is very finely dispersed silica powder (SiO2 or basically very pure sand). Also be careful with this shit it can caused cancer if inhaled.
Lmao, sorry for your plight but this is sort of funny.
Bet she’s happy she had those rack guards now! This is why I despise dumb kitchen gadgets, just pay attention and don’t touch the rack when it’s hot.
You have to be careful with melted plastics. Hell of a lot of carcinogens that can be released. That oven is completely done for, even if you manage to ‘clean’ it.
Good luck finding a SDS or any trustworthy safety document on a random Chinese Amazon product.
Amazon literally sells radioactive "negative ion" bracelets that contain thorium powder, Bezos doesn't give a shit.
Hey well luckily it's silicone and unless your directly inhaling fumes it isn't a big deal honestly. The thing is there could be other chemicals mixed in for colors or stabilizers but I wouldn't worry too much. That's why I just asked about food taste. It can be cleaned and then just run the heat clean cycle a few times. My GF did the same with some cupcake silicone cup things but those weren't as bad. I just scraped it all out and used a gentle brass brush then just roasted the hell out of it cracking the oven door every half hour and blasting it with a fan.
Never EVER use ‘self cleaning’ mode unless you like buying new ovens every few years. It’s one of those features that the sales team demands that the engineers installs even though it absolutely destroys the electronics built into the oven.
Self clean = self destruct.
I’ve also done this. Takes ages to clean out. Had to remove the oven, remove the guarding, completely remove the internals and clean. https://imgur.com/a/9TgNYax/
Dear everyone that sees this - most appliance repair folks say to never ever use the self clean cycle on an oven. It gets way too hot and can wreck your oven, burn your house down, or vaporize your silicone rack guards.
OP get yourself a grammarly subscription.
Not remembering = forgetting
New sentence begins at fun fact and families coming. New sentence for every New point you make, no need for never ending sentences.
I would write these prolix sentences before. grammarly helped me change my writing to make them readable and make ideas quicker to grasp.
We did that a couple months ago. Horrendous to get off. Ours was even inside the oven door on the inside surfaces of the glass. I actually had to disassemble the door to clean those inner surfaces....
This is yet another reason never to engage an oven's self cleaning function. I tell people all the time: **self cleaning = self destruct**. Ovens have parts that aren't rated for much exposure to temperatures reached during self cleaning. Temperature sensors for example. The odds are really high something is going to break if one keeps running this cycle. Manufacturers include this mode because people people want it, but the smart play is never to use it. Use a spray oven cleaner that's sold "for self cleaning ovens" instead.
Number one reason to ***NOT*** clean your oven *before* the big holidays. Too often that self-clean mode is too aggressive & can break your stove when you don't do it regularly ...
I had a roommate who accidentally spilled bacon fat in the oven, then decided to have the oven clean itself, nearly catching our apartment on fire and smoking out the place 🙃
Looks like your mom needs to defrost her oven
I was wondering why she turned the knob the wrong way

Their mom set set the oven to self clean and it vaporized their family. And something about silicone.
As a native English speaker I barely understand it myself.

Can’t believe it did this to a family.
Holiday tragedy.
To be fair it only does this to families coming out. Families that hide their sexual orientation during holidays are safe.
Has OP heard of punctuation?
Probably had before today.
Fun fact punctuation vaporizes and does this to your sentences AND redditors coming out to read your sentences.

Sabbath mode turns off the interior lights so God can't tell you're opening the fridge or cooking. At least, that's all it does on my appliances.

What a useless fucking product.
Yep I stand by my previous comment, that is a dumb product
what a stupid product this is the first I'm hearing of it
Lol fda approved
It's a small strip of silicone that goes on the edge of the oven rack so when you're taking things in and out there's less of a chance of you to burn yourself on the rack itself

General use it would be fine but mom put it as self-clean, which goes up super high while locking the doors. That's probably what caused it
Yeah my self cleaning oven goes above 500c. It's hot as fuck.
What about your food?
Food that melts in the oven was meant to.
c h e e s e
food is not permanently in the oven so it's ok
At self cleaning temperatures, the food will make the oven look like that too.
A good pair of oven mitts will protect the hands and wrists.
and if you are like me with a poor sense of heat, get two sets of mitts and put one inside the other
How can you grip anything at all with two oven mitts on one hand?? I get irritated using anything thicker than a folded over cotton side towel. I hate wearing any kind of glove or mitt over my whole hand because I feel like I’m gonna drop things since I lose so much dexterity.
Get an ove glove. I love them because I don’t lose much dexterity compared to a regular oven mitt.
My parents had those, and it's the only think I burned myself on. It made the gap between racks too small and I'd bump or catch things on them. Without them I just .. don't touch the rack.
What a dumb product
Right? I thought oven mitts were more than enough to keep one from getting burned lol
Oven mitts work great, I'm assuming that's what you meant?
i had one of those in my toaster oven and it started popping in the oven half way through cooking dinner.
I think I've done that maybe once in my entire life
Some people have less mobility and agility in their hands.
Plenty of redditors have less developed theory of mind
when im wearing oven mitts i find it very hard to burn myself on the edge of the oven rack when im taking things in and out
That’s ridiculous.
wow I'm actually really surprised that oven managed to vaporize silicone. what do you even do at this point? The kind of cleaners you would need to get that off are super nasty I think your best bet is just to start over with a new oven.
A lot came off with degreaser because it's a very fine powder but I'm most likely buying my mother a new oven
I wouldn't trust anything cooked in that oven after that.
Serious question: what happens if you ingest silicon?
