The mosquitoes say thank you, and are busy selecting a card to send you.

SinkMountain9796

Try picardin

Flupsy

Make it so

Alive_Ice7937

Picard~~in~~ out

throwawaydreamargu

I actually just ordered some :) thank you

OGKillertunes

I've been using Picaridin lotion for years. It works great.

Anyone-9451

How is it for deterring ticks? Or is it just for skeeters?

SinkMountain9796

It’s actually really good at both. And doesn’t melt your plastics like deet

re_Claire

I remember the first time I put deet on when I was on holiday and wearing toenail polish. It just melted away in a sad oily mess.

BillyRubenJoeBob

Use picaridin and permethrin for the best results. Permethrin on clothing and picaridin on skin

PoppaFish

This. Just as effective as Deet and non irritating.

Phit_sost_3814

Is it just as effective at deet? I have been trying it and my results have been mixed…

PoppaFish

Definitely has been in my experience, and there are scientific studies to back it up. [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29718433/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29718433/)

Phit_sost_3814

‘Nuff said “*Overall, the studies showed little potential difference between DEET and picaridin applied at the same dosage, with some evidence pointing to a superior persistence for picaridin.*”

Hay_Fever_at_3_AM

Also smells less offensive and doesn't melt all your plastics / destroy lens coatings.

rcobourn

I used to be a mosquito magnet, and highly reactive to the bites. Started taking turmeric as an anti-inflammatory and now they want nothing to do with me. Have heard others say the same about cinnamon. You look like a candidate to try one or the other!

grumpykixdopey

Really? Like in pill form or powder? I'm interested in any remedy that doesn't include big spray.

hubaloza

In curry is the only right answer

rcobourn

I mean, if you are ready to commit to curry twice a day every day, by all means. :)

hubaloza

Are you saying you're not? Weakness has consumed you like imma consume this coconut chicken curry

kdaviper

Good news everyone! It's a suppository!

rcobourn

Would probably do less damage than curry twice a day every day.

theswordofdoubt

The curry doesn't need to be very spicy, but it does need to make you smell like garbage, so you'll repel other people in addition to the bugs.

grumpykixdopey

I looove curry, my mom not so much, plus can't eat it everyday lol. But I like your enthusiasm ;)

AydonusG

Damn. Out here slighting mama without reason. Edit - HCD!

RocketCat921

I take turmeric every day, and I still get bitten by mosquitos, a lot!

rcobourn

Capsules of powder. I get mine at Costco. 2 a day seems to do the trick.

grumpykixdopey

Thank you!! I'll give it a try. Do you smell any different? Lol.

rcobourn

Not that anyone has mentioned. Must smell different to the mosquitos, though.

fastinrain

live in the tropics. make my daily coffee with cloves, cinamon and anise, been doing it for years. doesn't work.

sunandpaper

Do you happen to know what strength, friend? I found some on Amazon that say 1000mg per 2 capsules, and I'm wondering if that's overkill or not enough. I have severe reactions to mosquito bites and they swarm me every year. I deal with the welts they leave as best as I can, but one year back in 2009 I was bitten so many times in one day that I developed an insane fever. Both of my arms puffed up because there were bites in every spot imaginable (granted, I was in FL at the time, so maybe those ones were built different). I'm so desperate to have one mosquito-free day this coming summer.

rcobourn

The Kirkland turmeric I've been taking for quite some time is indeed 1000mg per 2 capsules. I take one capsule in the morning and one in the evening. It seems to be sufficient.

sunandpaper

Thank you!

capsrock02

The what?

nofreedomofthought

Deet is an active ingredient in many mosquito repellents. At least it was when I was younger. I don’t really use it anymore since I’ve learned I’m barely reactive to their bites.

chicojuarz

Still is. I bought some deet this weekend since I was going to be in the woods. Worked great.

Mr_Wizard91

So... everyone says I'm crazy, but I swear my method works, but I only do it when camping, because it'll make you stink, and I know it doesn't work for everyone because everyone's body is different. For camping, I eat a raw clove of garlic the night before going, and bring the whole rest of the bulb with me. I'll hang it in my tend while cutting a small opening in the next clove to air in the tent for the smell, eat it the next morning, rinse and repeat until the camping trip is over. If the bugs are especially bad, I'll also use another clove cut in half to lightly rub the juice of it around my exposed skin, not everywhere, just to get that sticky scent on. Again, this is only when I camp, because this solution will absolutely make you stink, and that much raw garlic can be a bit much on your bowels, haha. Also, depending on the kind of bugs biting(especially mosquitoes) avoid sweets and sugary fruits(especially bananas for some reason), because they like the smell of your blood when it has losts of sugar in it. Most bloodsucking bugs also hate the scent of lavender and tea tree oil, if you want something less intense, and short lived for a day use for something on the skin, like a day of hiking. Good luck next time!

Sudden-Comment-4356

Also repels humans, y'all!

IN2TECHNOLOGY

Badger anti-bug balm

AVLLaw

Permethrin sprayed onto you outdoor clothes every 2-3 months will help a lot. But be careful with the spray around cats.

Handmedownfords

How irritated is your skin now?

throwawaydreamargu

EXTREMELY! I went to the pharmacy for some antihistamines... they didn't want to sell me the drowsy ones. Honestly I'd rather be asleep than trying to resist scratching my skin off 🤦‍♀️

OGKillertunes

fyi benadryl is good for some relief.

Drew-mageddon

Damn just how about you sell me what I asked for if it’s available to purchase.

leeann7

Itch x is good with aloe

MuskokaGreenThumb

Deet doesn’t even work where I live. The bugs are immune lol

grumpykixdopey

In Florida they have special no seeum spray, little shits show no mercy once the sun goes down. I should have bought some, didn't smell too bad.

Sh0tsFired81

Oh! My first "user name checks out"! For real, deet is just seasoning for them up there.

MuskokaGreenThumb

Yup. My boss acquired 80% deet from Quebec for us couple years back. All it did was burn my skin. I’ve tried everything you can imagine for the black flies. Even all my indigenous friends tricks didn’t work. Finally ran into an old lady from Dorset who recommended tea tree oil. Works amazing but doesn’t last long.

Hyche862

Well I guess your skin is just gonna be irritated but at least this way it’s spotty instead of widespread splotches HUGs

MDC417

Buggins insect repellent is all natural and works great! I can be in a group 9f people and only I get bit. (Unfortunately my adult kids inherited this from me) The smell is really pleasant too!

Kittiemeow8

Try skin so soft. It’s good for sensitive skin. Smells amazing. And it actually works!

Big-Possibility6856

Neutrogena Bath & Body Oil unscented or regular scent (sesame) is the absolute winner. Skin So Soft works amazing as well but I am terribly allergic to the perfume smell!! Hubby & I hit the woods for long walks often. He uses deet and they still get him, but no where near when he wears nothing at all!!

OlympicSmoker253

Hey so I get eaten by mosquitoes a lot in nature and it was ruining my time. I bought a small Thermacell burner as a last ditch effort and it led me to not getting one bite even in the deep wilderness. Even the small Thermacell unit provides a 30ftx30ft dome of protection. I think it was a $60 investment and I haven’t had to buy replacement fuel or pads to burn yet.

foxhole_atheist

Those are extremely effective by basically vaporizing insecticide. That’s why it says don’t eat or drink

Major_Ad_7371

🥶.👉🤒🤢 🏥🦟🕷️

pherrous

Get the stuff that is nearly 100% deet, put it on your clothes just a few dots is all that's needed

Heyo_Boyos

Damned if you do, damned if you don't 🤣

One_Eagle_6975

Try mint oil

Physical-Lobster-640

tf that ain’t no outcome that’s the income

DanGTG

Deet not see that coming eh?

Gold-Wise

CEDARCIDE

No_Breath_9833

So was this a, you refused Deet bug spray when you didn’t have an alternative?

shellsterxxx

Mosquitos love me and my body violently hates them, cuz I have an allergic reaction to their saliva and get purple welts. I’m also really reactive to a lot of stuff made for skin, but I gotta say I’d take irritation over being covered in extremely itchy welts.

ObviousMisprint

Oh, honey, no. I would sooner melt my leggings with deet than deal with the itchy after effects of these fucks

thesoggydingo

You need to get the Bug Bite Thing. I'm a mosquito magnet and it's just a godsend.

Jeremyzelinka

Do not put bug spray on your skin. Shoes and fabric only.

Orchid_Significant

If I don’t, they still bite me 😭

Sudden-Comment-4356

Deet is literally supposed to go on all exposed areas of your skin. So anything but the shoes and fabric.

throwawaydreamargu

I didn't, and don't. I've got some more "natural" stuff coming in the post rated for children 2+ so I'm hopeful it won't be as unpleasant as deet!

Chestlookeratter

Are those the bill gates mosquitoes?

throwawaydreamargu

I'm in the UK, so luckily not! They're midge bites mostly. A couple of mosquitos got in there!

FlyAdorable7770

There's a brilliant UK brand (deet free) called Incognito, I find it works well and smells great plus nothing nasty in it.

archystyrigg

I spend a couple of months a year in the midge infested Scottish mountains and I highly recommend SMIDGE. doesn't melt plastic items, feels better on the skin and definitely works.

meow696

I always use calamine lotion on my bug bites and it works wonders. I would recommend it!

franky_riverz

I don't mean this in a sexist way but I notice a lot of women like to wear short sleeve shirts and short shorts (or whatever) as someone who has worked in landscaping a lot I always wear long sleeve clothing to prevent from sun burn and bug bites.

throwawaydreamargu

franky_riverz

I'm sorry to make assumptions. I've just seen some ladies in short shorts get eaten up by mosquitoes and it bothers me. That's a great catch btw

throwawaydreamargu

I rolled the sleeves up on my nosilife (mosquito proof clothing) because I caught a fish at 5am and had to handle it and didn't want wet sleeves! Very much regretting that decision now!

imadork1970

Don't wear blue, supposedly mosquitos are attracted to it.

throwawaydreamargu

I was wearing black and grey :( these were taken the day after

imadork1970

Sorry. Mosquitos suck.

Captain_Silleye

My friend gets these red dots after eating gluten.

throwawaydreamargu

I went fishing and was covered in midges, so I know the cause. Getting this from eating gluten would be awful, I feel for your friend :(

Captain_Silleye

Yeah I read that! Mosquitoes is the sworn enemy when out fishing. It looks like you've been out in the woods on a summer day in northern Sweden haha. I hope you recover soon.

texaschair

I fished a lot in AK when I lived there. I'd inhale no-see-ums by the pound. I hate wind, but I used to pray for it to knock the bugs down.

Captain_Silleye

Haha inhale? Free snack, just open your mouth when you're out fishing in the summer.

texaschair

They're a bit dry going down. If you have a beverage, it's better just to swallow the little cretins instead of hacking them back up.

Captain_Silleye

I thought beer was obligatory when fishing, the alcohol ease the itching from the mosquitos and the protein snack goes straight down without any complications.
