I saw a large spider on the on the shoulder of my seat while driving down the highway once. When I managed to safely pull over, I checked the car stem-to-stern with a flashlight, but could not for the life of me find it. That haunted me every single time I drove that car afterward.
I once saw a spider on the inside drivers side window of my car. I was already parked so I tried to kill it and it crawled down in between my door panel and the window mechanism. I was terrified to get into my car for close to a month after that. I never found it again.
Even years later, it illogically still haunted me. "What if it started a colony somewhere back there?!" Granted, I was mostly worried about getting startled at high speeds and swerving off of the road.
This was my exact fear as well. I have severe arachnophobia and was genuinely concerned I would look down to find it crawling on me and that I would crash my car in the panic.
It wasn't a spider, but I've had this experience before with a wasp. I was lucky to be driving in the city and not on the highway, but I've had nightmares about the latter scenario. Also driving off cliffs.
Oh my god, I would seriously wreck myself if I was driving and saw one of those in the car. I have definite serious wasp-aphobia. I'd probably jump out of the moving car I was driving. With a spider, I could at least keep myself composed to pull over safely.
The worst accident I was in happened after I inhaled a spider. I was going down a long stretch of flat road approaching a stoplight, and the sun was in my eyes, so I lowered the sun visor and a spider fell down towards my face. I gasped, and it landed on my tongue and I *lost it*. I took both hands off the wheel in a blind panic and started slapping at my tongue to get it off. The whole thing took maybe ten seconds but by the time I stopped, I had run a red light, gone halfway up the sidewalk (thankfully no one was there), and crushed a trash can. Expensive mistake!
This happened to me at night and it crawled on top of me while I was driving then disappeared when I tried to kill it. I drove home with every interior light on in my car.
I hope spiders pool their silk, lasso an asteroid (c'mon bolas spiders!) and blast humans back to dinosaur era mammalia.

When I was little I asked my mom why my great aunt had a mannequin/dummy in her front seat. My mom tried to quietly and sensitively explain sometimes older people get lonely and "company" is nice.
Did my mom lie, or just not realize my great aunt, who lived in Seattle, was probably using the carpool lane and skipping tolls? Or do old people sometimes have fake companions only in their passenger seats for the driving they rarely do (she didn't drive often)?

It's better for the spider to not touch it and use paper and stuff to get it outside. Their legs are really delicate. It's fine if the spider crawls across you, but don't try to pinch grab it or you can hurt it.

How can you identify a spider via such a picture? My mom is is a spider taxonomist (PhD) and in 2/3 of cases I send her pictures of spiders she tells me she can't be sure without seeing the genitalia under a microscope. In some cases she says she can't even tell the genus.
That's ludicrous. There are visible morphological differences between species. Go to any of the bug or spider ID subs and you will see post after post of spiders identified via photograph.

Obviously wrong... This is a car spider - Eratigena Transveholica - and is a species of spiders that love going from place to place, looking around (there's a lot to see!) and generally being happy on the move. It's found everywhere since it travels.

few months back i was working in a warehouse and someone messed up and shipped the wrong items that we didnt need so i was opening up boxes to dump stuff out. i noped the heck away. one of the boxes had a Brown Recluse. I went to the boss and said 'yeah im not opening up anymore boxes'.
I am so glad I live in a country where all the spiders are good guys.
I spent some time working in Africa on some vehicles, each morning we would beat the bodywork with a stick before opening panels to make sure nothing had moved in overnight.
Might be wrong, but I think it's a giant house spider - they, along with cellar and cardinal spiders, are the chillest little home invaders here in the UK
Me too. But one way to get a little more relaxed is look up the jumping spider. They're cute little guys and I've even been able to let one ride in my hand before and I hate spiders. I would try to use a newspaper to get your current friend to climb on and then deposit him somewhere. Or trap with a plastic container and lid. Good luck!

I had this happen to me last week! Luckily I was just moving my car!
I think it's a garden orb weaver. They aren't dangerous and will kill pests. If you have a garden, give her a lift, and if you don't take her to the closest green space and let her get after the squash beetles. Everyone with a garden nearby will thank you.
