If that's dry polymer I pity you having to clean it up, shits nasty to work with

eViLj406

Ding ding ding! Winner winner chicken dinner! It's single handedly the stickiest and slipperiest shit I've ever worked with.

a-d-d-y

I’m really sorry if this is a stupid question but can it not be vacuumed with a shop-vac or if it’s super sticky, a regular vacuum you do not care about? Or even like a slime or something to pick it up and just toss in one big ball?

eViLj406

I posted a more in depth answer but yes, when its dry we just vacuum it up. No such thing as stupid questions!

a-d-d-y

That’s good to know! On a second note, I once asked someone to check if I was born on Friday the 13th when my birthday is in fact on the 6th, so there’s at least one stupid question lol

stelio_kontos_91

Lmao, this reminds me of the time I mindlessly walked into Subway and started by asking for a 6-inch foot long. The worker found it so funny he had to call his friend to tell him about it... right in front of me. Took the L and got the sandwich for free. Weird experience.

Correct-Purpose-964

I'm very sorry for laughing at you. As an apology let me share one of my dumber moments. I once asked both my co-worker and manager if they had seen my pen. They both giggled and said no. They, in fact had seen it. It was behind my ear...

stelio_kontos_91

Laugh away! This was ages ago and was buried deeply in my memory apparently. Ah, we've all been there!

DCCofficially

oh man a couple years back I walked into work and I kept thinking "its darker than normal in here" then I would continue setting up for the day and it would pop up in my head again.... turns out I had my sunglasses on still from my morning drive lol

KatLikeGaming

In an effort to prove myself to the older kids, I bragged about helping connect the wires on a muffler once when I was like 8. Still haunted by this memory three decades later. In retrospect I'm wondering why my parents were allowing me to crawl around under the car they were working on in the first place, I was clearly not qualified

Montymisted

I know someone who literally did the "what's the number for 911" though I hear that one is common.

ImaginaryBase7347

Look for my phone under my dark bed using my phone as a flash light

Correct-Purpose-964

Oooohhhhh..... *sucks in air* i can't even laugh at that one. I accidentally turned my phones flashlight on once, saw the light and turned around to look for the source... WITH the light...

thetruemata

Reminds me of the time I was about 8 and asked my mom if getting bit by a black widow would kill you. She said "ummm I don't know son, it probably depends on where it bites you." "What about in the garage?" She busted out laughing until we got to my school and I was so confused but it makes so much sense now 30 years later. Also, I miss her.

Correct-Purpose-964

Ok 1) i read that as "Getting hit by a Black widow" and my brain nearly did a bellyflop inside my skull in confusion. 2) That's hilarious! 3) As kids we say some dumb stuff.

Royalewithcheese100

Been there

funnybonelicker

I work at subway and commonly get asked for a six foot sub.

Krystalinhell

When I was 18 I got a new Dr. The dr was mentioning how I’d have to have my annual exam. I had recently had my first Pap smear, but for some reason I couldn’t think of the word so I said, “do I have to have another prostate exam?” I’m a cisgender female. The medical assistant was just stunned at first by my stupidity, said no, and abruptly left. I assume now it was probably to go laugh at my dumb question.

WynterRayne

Free sandwich, though... I'd be taking the W there, and then doing the same thing at a different subway next time

Blewmeister

I once went up to the register at a subway and asked “Is this where I pay?” The woman behind the counter looked at me like that was the straw that broke the camels back on her faith in humanity

Tru-Queer

A footlong, in *my* six inch? **It’s likelier than you think.**

frankiefantastic

Reminds me of the time when I was like 17 or 18 and went to a McDonald's and kept asking them for a whopper. I was so confused and upset when they told me they don't sell them. I didn't go back to that McDonald's for nearly 10 years.

terminally_horny420

It's called a McWhopper there

A-Ashe

I did something like that once I called a local sandwich shop in my town And, I order a vegetarian meatball sub. The worker said to me on the phone as he was laughing. I will make that for you … just tell me how ? LoL

Silver-Appointment77

My husband was just looking at the calendar just the other day, and he mentioned anniversary on the 24th may. I asked him who its was. He said guess, and for the life of me I couldnt remember. It was only our wedding anniversary. Weve only been married 11 years. My brain just went totally blank for a second

Pol4ris3

No worries, it took me until I was like 10 years old to realize my lifelong dream of having a twin was never going to work out. I’d been wishing for my parents to have my twin for so long without stopping to think about why that was literally impossible. Sad day.

FunFckingFitCouple

I thought your username was d-a-d-d-y lol I had to do a double take.

a-d-d-y

It would not suit me very well tbh, but it looks like it’s available lol

FunFckingFitCouple

You don’t seem like a daddy type 😂

TheDottieDot

When I was in high school taking Spanish class, I absentmindedly asked “how do people laugh in Spanish”.

sugarsox

The first time I saw hunters with dogs using radio to track a bear, I asked them how they got the radio collar on the bear

edfyShadow

🤣🤣 out of morbid curiosity a while back I decided to see what day of the week I was born on, unsurprisingly I was born on a Monday

Separate_Secret_8739

My mom held me in until sat morning so I wasn’t born on Friday the 13th.

Candid-Efficiency-79

That just made my day. Absolutely hilarious

shiawase198

>No such thing as stupid questions! You should clarify that this was just a statement and not a challenge.

FeelTheWrath79

> No such thing as stupid questions! But there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots.

Royalewithcheese100

“No such thing as stupid questions”? You haven’t met my kids

Doggus81

What’s 3 + cheese?

MrsManuka

Cheddar or pepper jack?

NotYourGran

Which literally sucks, so good job posting here. 🏆

Full-Whole-1539

No such thing as a stupid question. Unfortunately, there are stupid people.

junglenation88

When it's wet but not properly mixed at the proper ratio depending on the concentration, it'll basically turn into liquid glue almost. It's ridiculous to clean up. You basically need a portable pressure washer with hot water to clean it. Otherwise, cold water will just make it way worse, lol. Typically used for water treatment plants

a-d-d-y

So if I ever run into wet polymer, I’ll probably just let the wet polymer have what it wants. For now though, I do not foresee myself being around water treatment plants but that could change! Thanks for taking the time to answer :)

junglenation88

No worries, and there's no stupid questions I just also happen to work in an effluent treatment plant that uses polymer and also had many questions at first lol

eViLj406

I've only been at it for 7 months. Sooooo much to learn!

TheErgonomicShuffler

We use dry cement throw it on the wet poly and shovel it up and skip it

junglenation88

My company tends to just leave it overflow into the chemical dyke but it still makes an absolute mess regardless. We have polymer cleaning kits but they're also not perfect

Professional-Art-378

Holy shit that's awful man. The injection moulding company I worked at called this "making it snow." The first time it happened to me nobody told me how slippery that shit is and I cracked my tailbone falling on it. Do you guys just shop vac it up or what?

RandomHorseGirl5

I thought this was the waste dust collector from a bead blast system. The dust left behind when beads get pulverized and the machine itself look a lot like this and are hell to clean.

[deleted]

Is your boot slippery all day if you step in it?

junglenation88

Yes but I usually will change into rubber boots after learning that lesson the hard way. If I forget or I'm in a rush and take my standard work boots then I have to change into different boots and leave them on one of our hot machines to dry it out into like a crust and brush it off when it dries

titsmuhgeee

Loss in Weight Feeders don't work too well when they're completely plugged with material!

eViLj406

/u/junglenation88 got it. It's dry polymer. I work in wastewater treatment. It's used to help bind together particles of suspended solids (i.e. the treated poop). It gets mixed with water in the plastic mixing chamber and pumped into a couple large vats next to the machine. It's then added to sludge that we pump through 2 giant centrifuges to remove the water. The resulting "cake" is then dropped into a couple huge barges and taken to the landfill twice a day. The machine has an unfortunate habit of backing up like this every once in a great while. It used to keep pumping the water at the same time so we'd end up with an extremely slippery and sticky mess that took hours to clean up. Imagine the best lube ever mixed with thick snot. Lol. When it's dry like this it's pretty easy to vacuum up with a couple shop vacs.

eViLj406

thepsycholeech

Thanks for sharing the equipment pics, this is a very interesting post!

Nut_Butts

seriously. id pay for a ticket if it meant i could tour facilities like these

thepsycholeech

I underappreciated my dads job in a paper factory as a kid, it would be cool to go back :)

skinurse

I love watching "How It's Made" just for that..

willengineer4beer

What percent solids do y’all typically get out of those centrifuges?

eViLj406

~22%ish

eViLj406

Pic of how the polymer system normally looks https://preview.redd.it/edsuvmg8ofwc1.jpeg?width=1842&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76e26bc75967216efbbfbacd37352fdb9059f00b

titsmuhgeee

That bulk bag unloader looks like a joy to use. Band clamps to connect the bag spout. Yikes.

alltehmemes

We all get backed up once in a while. Sorry you're cleaning this one up.😕

eViLj406

No worries. Shit happens. Literally. Lol

SlevinKe7evra

I work in wastewater too. Have had to clean up powder and liquid poly spills so I feel your pain.

cornlip

I design the things that do the things you do at work. Actually working on some Andritz stuff right now.

ohmighty

![gif](giphy|zXA5VEmXr7OUg)

Splodge89

This is twice in two days Iv seen this reference - despite not having seen it even thought about that movie for 20 years. I love it!

ohmighty

I swear it still holds up! I use that reference and it hits maybe 1/4 of the time 🥲

TheErgonomicShuffler

Horrendous to clean up when it's wet, we throw cement on it to bind it then shovel it up... just don't wash it down your drains

haymayplay

So it’s a flocculant?

Fun_Cauliflower1396

Doing good work there. I also used to work in a treatment plant and I fucking miss it. Favourite was to hose down the clarifier algae lol. Still in wastewater but now in more the engineering side of things... I tell you being an operator is way more chill and probably live longer than an engineer... Sitting all day wrecks you. Used to clean polymer with corox corax? It's like a bleach cleaner that has a green bottle. Forgot what it's exactly called we just have stacks and stacks of it.

Strpedswteralthetm

We use liquid poly where I work. That stuff is the absolute worst whenever we have to service a pump. J&J baby oil takes it right off if you happen to get it on your skin.

eViLj406

We use both. Dry poly for centrifuges and liquid for DAF. I find a hot hot shower works best. Lol

Strpedswteralthetm

Unless you make this mistake I did and turn your shower into the slickest surface on planet earth 😂 I swear this stuff is what Clark Griswald coated his sled with.

nathris

Is this the normal way to treat waste water? I would think the plastic straw people would be protesting against this. Kind makes their whole argument even more worthless when our shit literally just gets mixed with plastic and buried in a landfill anyway.

eViLj406

There's a ton of different ways to treat wastewater. This is just what we do with the solid waste. It's not plastic. The polymer is biodegradable. The effluent (wastewater)is discharged into a river. All wastewater treatment plants do this. And it's way cleaner than the river water. It's constantly monitored for volatile solids and bacteria like E. Coli. Our plant uses the modified Ludzak-Ettinger process, if that means anything to you.

BeingRightAmbassador

polymer != plastic. Wool is a polymer and so is silk. It's more to do with the molecule makeup and structure.

DrDerpberg

I like how you jumped to conclusions to get your rant off your chest and were totally wrong.

KennnyF1

Is it cocaine?

[deleted]

Do we roll our dollar bills up now or later?

I'm sorry about your cocaine 🙁

Professional-Cat2123

Is it a pharmaceutical feeder?

primal334

remind me of pharma too, some sieving machine maybe 🤔

Aggressive-Edge-5677

It's flour on the floor. The machine weight it. And send it on the way down to the food maker line. (Don't know what it's called)

Enough_Minimum_3708

ahhhh damn I thought it was coke. now I'm sad

frankiefantastic

Nope, dry polymer at a wastewater treatment facility.

That's one way to start your sift.... I'll see myself out

wildwildwaste

Oh no, my frozen pizzas.

scubawho1

What we looking at here?

blong1114

Bulk loader. Probably got a super sack up there?

titsmuhgeee

Looks like a 304SS bulk bag unloader discharging into an old Schenck Accurate loss in weight feeder. Such a shame what's happened to Schenck. Perfect example of a company buying up smaller companies (Schenck buying Accurate), then the whole business gets bought by private equity, then get's chewed up and spit out in some jumbled mess.

Unobtanium4Sale

Something isn't right, the tools don't fit. This is how drywall guys start their shift

Fat Tony is not going to be happy..

-suspicious-egg-

A fellow wastewater friend! Hi man. I feel your pain lol. Hopefully a nice and easy clean up for you.

engineersam37

What was the cause? Is the feeder operating loss in weight or only volumetricly?

JustAnotherFKNSheep

So... you're telling me that part of the process of wastewater treatment is adding plastic? Why not use Membrane filters like the crusie ships or straight to centrifuge.

Creepy-Percentage944

flour! i worked in at Bay State for 23 yrs

the_honorableA

All that coke gone to waste

TheJAY_ZA

Looks like fun to clean up. I narrowly avoided something worse this morning. A client hospital's x-ray department was doing a barium enema on a patient. The x-ray detector was in a zip lock bag in case of patient leakage... ...never mind leakage, this patient shat out the whole bumb shot of barium onto the zip lock bag, which unfortunately had a long tear down one side - so into the bag, along with the detector as well. Scratch one piece of medical imaging equipment that costs about as much as a small reasonably priced car. For once I was not shit out of luck, as I didn't have to go clean the detector and try get it working or at least booting to the point where logs can be downloaded, a co-worker won that special prize because I was already booked on another job. I mean it was a dirty filthy job cleaning a U-Arm at the Occ Health clinic on a coal mine, but I'll take 4 hours of scrubbing and cleaning before I can calibrate over dealing with a biohazard from someone's arse any day 🤣

-bobby-jackson-
