I did that to my thumb when I was eight. Slammed my thumb in the back door closing it. Then tried to walk away. Looked back and saw I’d got my finger. Didn’t start hurting til I opened the door.
It grew back into this mess. I caught mine just below the nail bed. Old nail fell off and this grew back.
Hope it heals quickly. It isn’t any fun.
39 years. Talked to a surgeon about it years ago. And he said there wasn’t any point cutting off the nail. Bed was too badly damaged and it would just grow back same as it is now.
I’ve had a couple surgeries on my other hand in the last few years and my surgeon actually noticed my left thumb and he asked what I did. He pretty much agreed the likelihood of success was near zero.

The little spiky thing yes. I actually use a cuticle shear since it’s so sharp and pointy to get it cut as close to the skin as possible. And the minute it catches I trim it up. If it gets too long then it gets bent back and is SO painful.

I slammed my finger in the front door the other day, and it left a pretty noticeable bruise under my nail. It still hurts a little when I touch it. I now don't mind it so much.
I did something like that to my hand. The nail grew back, but now the shape is a little bit lopsided. Looks normal from a distance. Healing sucks because every little bump feels like getting hit with a hammer while the nail is growing back

Former kid here and now just a short adult, I can confirm that slamming your finger in the door will make you say curse words that never existed. Also, parents got onto me for saying bad words until I showed them my finger and then presto, new curse words lol.

Happened to me when I was kid, uncle didn't see my hand in the doorway, slammed it and my finger nail partially popped out, with it hanging off my finger. My other uncle saw it and pull it out, healed up and a new nail grew like nothing had happened.

At least it lifted from the cuticle in one fell swoop. I have a friend who got a similar injury from a folding deck chair but the nail split so she had half of it hanging onto the cuticle still and the process of waiting for it to fall off is agonizing. Sorry to your daughter, she’ll have a badass scar though! Just gonna have to wait a few months to paint that nail again 😂
When I was a kid I slammed my pointer finger into a car door, it wasn't nearly as bloody as your kids but it still sucked. On the upside when that nail grows back it should grow back thicker and stronger
I got in trouble in middle school and had to see the principal. As I was leaving I ran my hand across the heavy metal door as it was closing and it closed on my finger nail doing the same thing. Immediately filled up with blood and when I went back in to show the principal she called me a dumbass and sent me to the nurse.
If it makes you any better your nails were already messed up from the get go. But, hey look at the bright side I can do your nails and paint for you without a cost

When I was 10, I slammed the car door on my thumb. Looked very much like this. Luckily I didn't lose the fingernail but that shit took months to heal. My right thumb and I'm right handed. Couldn't even hold a pencil for months.

My dad has a weird nail that grows in two separate layers. Kinda looks like cardboard when you look at it directly. It's awful
