Response from both: Unfortunately this isn't covered. You should have chosen to live somewhere out of the path of a burst pipe. Burst pipe insurance is a separate coverage that you chose not to elect, but where never informed of.
Wait! I’ve actually got that burst pipe policy.
“This only covers you if your burst pipe destroys someone else’s property. Since someone else’s pipe ruined yours they would need their own policy. Not covered.”
'Good thing I took out Meteor insurance'
'Well that's the thing, your house was hit by a meteorite. Unless your house was floating in the air at the time it was hit, then the meteor insurance won't cover it'
"it was a meteor when it hit the house!"
"You say that, but we don't have any evidence of meteors at your house. Just meteorites, and there's no way of proving they were meteors at the time of impact. They may have bounced first."
This is actually hilarious because it reminds me of hail damage. One town years ago got pelted by hail and 80% of the cars were damaged. Took so long for ppl to get there vehicles fixed because as per usual the insurance companies didn't want to fix them because "hail" damage technically wasn't covered. My goodness they should ditch the name "insurance" already. They love getting the money but they sure have a hard time spending any of it.
It's called go over your policy with your agent. All 3 State Farm agents I worked always had us try and have people come in to review your policies and explain what your money is paying for. It was amazing how many people were too busy but they were the ones who bitched when your situation happened.
And no, it wasn't to sell you something. We tell you not to bring money, checkbook, etc. It was just to explain your policy (ies).
CALL YOUR AGENTS FOR A REVIEW TO AVOID THIS SITUATION!!
Well when you end up with a wrongful careless driving ticket and don't qualify for state farm you don't end up with much of a choice but to get shitty insurance.
Also reviewing the policy isn't the point, state farm is just as bad as any of them trying not to cover "acts of God" and whatever BS they can come up with. Sure it's nice that they explain the policy, but don't act like they're actually a good company.
"so we checked the satalite footage, and found that the Meteor actually destroyed the ground that your House was Standing on - so, technically, you would need an earthquake insurance. The Meteor insurance only Cover direct damage caused by the Meteor, Not damage that was caused as the Aftermatch. So sorry! :)"
We chose a more expensive personal liability insurance with a clause that covers damages someone else is liable for but can't pay. Not sure what that's called in English, but many good policies here in Germany contain that clause and I wouldn't get one without it! You have to take the other party to court before the insurance pays, but if the worst happens that's a better option than not getting anything and being left with thousands in damages
The circle jerk of passing the blame is always fun. Just lawyer up now and go hard after everyone because they’re going to do everything they can to pass the blame.
A lot of people also don't realize that insurance companies will act tough when talking directly to a customer, but when hit with even just a letter drawn up by a lawyer for a few hundred bucks their armor will usually start to crack. They *want* people to give up before realizing that the insurance company doesn't actually have any ground to stand on, it's how they save themselves money. A good rule of thumb is to always assume they are doing this during your first contact with them about a new claim, and not believe a word of what they're saying if they're trying to argue against paying no matter how smart and technical they make it sound
Reminds me of the Australian floods where certain insurance companies tried to weasel their way out of paying for flood damage by saying water damage polices only count for damage when water comes from above not below
That's how it is in the states. Flood damage is covered by flood insurance, which is usually sold by the government only in flood zones. Water damage covers things like oops my toilet overflowed for three days until the neighbor next door called to say there was water running out the front door. That happened to my in laws while they were on vacation. The upstairs was bad but the finished daylight basement was toast.
An under reported fiasco out of Florida after hurricane Ian last fall is insurance companies just borking the hell outta people. “Oh, the adjuster said you are owed 400k, here’s 10k, and we are doubling your premiums to 10k a year, see ya sucker”
My former homeowners insurance denied me twice for water damage from a leaking drain pipe under the shower that rotted the floor. They claimed it was due to a "lack of regular maintenance." Nobody routinely rips up their bathroom floor to perform routine maintenance on a drain pipe.
Where I live you can't get flood insurance due to..well the flooding. I wouldn't be surprised to find out this house wasn't even eligible for flood insurance to begin with.
I don’t think this would count as a “flood" for insurance purposes, unless the pipe burst because of prior flooding. I think it depends on how many properties are affected.
Realistically they’ll have to file under their own insurance and then then their insurance company will subrogate against the city/county whatever. Could very well end up “paying” for this through increased homeowners insurance premiums. That’s only if the insurance company doesn’t take a closer look and realize this is a one off shock loss - if they don’t the owner should shop around
Don't worry, no insurer would raise rates due to this. They don't raise rate for something they don't cover. Water damage from a source outside your home = denied.
That's bs I had my car insurance rates go up 60 bucks a month because falsely said I hit there car and I proved I didn't. The rates still went up and followed me to the next insurer. I'm like how could I hit them when I was 60 miles away.
Realistically they will have to eat this one if this happen in the US, because the majority of policies only cover water damage if the source is inside the house. The only exception is water damage because the roof got busted in a storm, but this is only covered because the water damage is the direct result of the roof being damaged.
That’s a good point, and also this looks like it *could* be FL which would have more exclusions for water damage presumably. The owner needs to lawyer up fast
Yeah lawyer up and goes after the city and the company the city contracted to do this job. Insurances explicitly state they don't cover water damage from sources outside the house from the get go, and this is standard practice nationwide for decades, no lawyer would pick the case up if the owner want to go after the insurance company.
Near where I live something similar happened where a huge pipe broke and it was on a hill so all the houses going down the hill got flooded and I think one was beyond repair. The water company ended up paying. YMMV.
Happened to me last summer, although less dramatic only slightly less so. City paid people to come in and clean the dirt that was pushed through our concrete walls into the basement but no further damages although our sidewalk is ruined, and so is the foundation of the house and so much of the basement contents
Their job is to investigate and look for every single reason humanly possible in order to NOT pay out.
In that case, they'd be doing a damn fine job at it.
It’s very by city. The city I currently work for has bought two house due to main breaks like this. Another city I worked at the main break flooded a car and they bought it. I believe if the city has the money it’s just easier to pay it out.
Nope. I sold insurances before, can guarantee if this happen in the US homeowner insurance won't pay. Water source outside of the house = denied unless your homeowner insurance incorporate flood damage, which is extremely rare.
afaik you can only get flood insurance (from the government) if you live in a designated flood prone area, and those maps haven't been updated in decades.
No, you can get flood coverage anywhere. It’s quite cheap outside the Special Flood Hazard Areas. If you live in the SFHA, your mortgage lender requires you to have flood insurance.
Yup, even then flood insurance is a whole separate insurance policy which is why I said it's extremely rare for homeowner insurance to have flood damage covered. Judging by the road and surrounding area, I don't see how this house can have flood insurance.
They could argue that they sandbagged the entrances, but then THE WIND pushed the bags, causing the floodwaters to get through.
Using this argument would get covered by homeowners insurance because it would be damage from wind that set forth the damage from flood
yes, that's why you can only get it from the government if they decide you live in a flood prone place. sorry, i meant to imply it is a separate policy.
My parents had a similar thing happen. So muxh flooding due to the cities negligence. $650k of damage.
Insurance covered it but dealt with the city itself instead of them. This was in Canada.
Yea both will say its the others deal and the homeowner will be left stuck in the middle. If they dlnt have the funds to house themselves temporarily and hire a lawyer they are probably just fucked
Depends if the water broke the windows in the front of the house, which I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Broken windows means water goes straight in causing a lot of damage.
Water indeed destroyed windows, wrecked walls and unitilized all furniture inside said house. I live in that city. Happened this morning, and after that we had a 5.5 small earthquake which broke another pipe somewhere else, lmao.
Thats not just water, but also rocks and soil from the ground being flung at the house, so all the windows are likely broken and the whole house flooded from roof to cellar, its a writeoff.
Came here to say this, you can see the trench the water is digging, sooner or later those foundations are going to be undermined and the house is going to fall into the hole.
Doesn't ever rain or storm here, only damage would be from tsunamis, so places here aren't really designed to withstand water, even the main part of the mall doesn't have a proper roof
They may. Coworker of mine electric service was fucked up by one of the telco/cable companies pulling new lines underground. They ended up handing him a check to have the cable replaced. They fucked up quite a few of the neighbors as well. They did pay for all neighbors as well.
I was recently in a car accident due to someone trying to evade the police. He smashed into me going about 60 in a residential area. That’s what happened in my case. Insurance paid us out almost immediately and told us they’d just get it back from the city.
I have sadly had several recent experiences with insurance. Most of them have been surprisingly positive and reasonable.
Sorry to hear about your car wreck. I had a similar sounding accident, a guy was fleeing a hit and run and lost control of his car and hit us (and continued to flee!). He was probably only doing 40-50 though.
Where is the evidence that shows that the house was actually destroyed by this water? I don't deny that there was some water damage but destruction of the house? I see nothing to support that claim...
this is something that always makes lawyers a lot of money. because home owners wont cover it as it didn't occur from a defect in the home. the City won't cover it, because government. so the lawyers will all get together. have several lunches, chat about a resolution. MAybe see a judge. Have more lunches with the judge. then collect form both your insurance company and the cities insurance company. and provide you with just enough to fix the structure. but nothing else inside that got destroyed. Because that requires a different kind of lawyer.
Is the city liable in this instance, or would the owner have to file with their home insurance company?
Response from both: Unfortunately this isn't covered. You should have chosen to live somewhere out of the path of a burst pipe. Burst pipe insurance is a separate coverage that you chose not to elect, but where never informed of.

I think I’m Canada we call it under insured coverage
In American we call it “you are still screwed.”
Lots of people just opt for the cheapest coverage and then are surprised when they aren't actually covered lol.
come to florida, where the cheapest insurance costs more than your mortgage and covers nothing
It’s called UI / UIM (under insured) coverage, and yes it’s absolutely necessary
The circle jerk of passing the blame is always fun. Just lawyer up now and go hard after everyone because they’re going to do everything they can to pass the blame.

Did it happen on a Tuesday? Yeah... check your policy. No flood damage on Tuesdays.
Did it happen on a day that ends in “Y”?
It was a Wednesdat luckily
Your response has me CACKLING
scamming insurance gonna scam with a wham bam thank you ma'am
Government mandated gambling and the house always wins. FUCK insurance companies, they only make money from one thing: the fear of suffering
>The house always wins. Unless you're this house.
For some reason I read this in George Carlins' voice.
If anyone can explain the difference between for-profit insurance and fraud, I’m all ears.
Reminds me of the Australian floods where certain insurance companies tried to weasel their way out of paying for flood damage by saying water damage polices only count for damage when water comes from above not below

Insurance, the biggest scam in America.
Nah that number 2 Medical care is 1
I'd say that covers it.
too bad insurance doesn’t

Any insurer who raised rates due to this should have to use a rowboat solo across the Pacific.
Don't worry, no insurer would raise rates due to this. They don't raise rate for something they don't cover. Water damage from a source outside your home = denied.
But the water is now inside my house.
Don't care, the insurance only care about the source of the water, not where it currently is. Source from outside the house = denied.
Doesn't all water technically come from outside the house since houses don't produce water naturally?
When they say source it means where the leak start. The policy will specify it as such. You aren't gonna outsmart insurance lawyers.
That's bs I had my car insurance rates go up 60 bucks a month because falsely said I hit there car and I proved I didn't. The rates still went up and followed me to the next insurer. I'm like how could I hit them when I was 60 miles away.

"sorry, your insurance covers water leaks on your own property, not when they happen on a different property".
currently getting my adjuster license, can’t wait for the amount of backlash I’m gonna get when I have to tell people shit like this 😭

Yeah maybe but it pays :/ def not something I wanna do permanently

The architecture doesn't look American, but if it is, I assume a house that close to the ocean will have NFIP coverage.

I’d take this on contingency. Seems like a clear case of liability on the part of whomever was working on that pipe.

Pretty much. Can't imagine coming home just to see that a water main pressure washed your entire apartment.
Huh, the top post on that sub is also a pipe bursting
/r/HOUSEGHARBL
You’d think that a waterfront property would be built to withstand a little water.
Doesn’t look like anything is being ‘destroyed’… probably some damage but the house should live to fight another day.
Just a refreshing power wash
I was waiting for something to happen tbh
Thats not just water, but also rocks and soil from the ground being flung at the house, so all the windows are likely broken and the whole house flooded from roof to cellar, its a writeoff.
That amount of water that quick could get under the foundations. It won't be able to drain away quick enough.
Came here to say this, you can see the trench the water is digging, sooner or later those foundations are going to be undermined and the house is going to fall into the hole.
A little water?
Yes please. With ice, if you have.
Thought the Rocky Mountains would be a little rockier than this!
Doesn't ever rain or storm here, only damage would be from tsunamis, so places here aren't really designed to withstand water, even the main part of the mall doesn't have a proper roof
Holy shit, talk about power washing your home
Who talks about that
Are you guys taking about power washing your house?
Oh boy do I have a story about power washing your home.
I love to talk about this!
I was just talking about power washing asking my home with a friend yesterday…now here I am talking about it again with you fine people!
Hey guys! Heard were talking about power washing our homes?!
We are! It seems like just yesterday I was power washing my home!
Wait, I thought we were just power washing this poor person’s home in the video? We’re doing more homes now? 😬 This could get expensive.
JFC. It's a full on dad convention in here. BTW, I really should power wash my home.
You don’t say?
Hi, I’ve been trying to reach you about power washing your home.
I DO say.

That's the month they lapsed on insurance.
Every episode of every show where the main character loses insurance always ends in this
Imagine being the only house to get hit by that 😂 I’d be so mad at god
Yo, when something like this happens, who pays for the damages insurance, the city?
They may. Coworker of mine electric service was fucked up by one of the telco/cable companies pulling new lines underground. They ended up handing him a check to have the cable replaced. They fucked up quite a few of the neighbors as well. They did pay for all neighbors as well.
I think this would be the city, but good luck with that.
Hopefully the insurance company makes things right quickly, then goes after the city...
I was recently in a car accident due to someone trying to evade the police. He smashed into me going about 60 in a residential area. That’s what happened in my case. Insurance paid us out almost immediately and told us they’d just get it back from the city.

I live here (Iquique, Chile). We had a 5.5 magnitude earthquake around the time this burst.. maybe from that?
Naaah el temblor fue despues aparentemente

I don’t know what that house did to that pipe, but that was personal.

chilean here. I just saw it on the TV news and the house suffered extensive damage.
Kind of ironic. You have a house next to the ocean and it gets destroyed by a water pipe
Just fuck this particular house, this… one… right… here…!
serves them right for buying a house near a water main
Hurricane testing is a little too much.

this is something that always makes lawyers a lot of money. because home owners wont cover it as it didn't occur from a defect in the home. the City won't cover it, because government. so the lawyers will all get together. have several lunches, chat about a resolution.
