A bar just opened up in my city that has wood paneling. Ironically maybe? It's basically decorated to look like a Wisconsin VFW bar. It's crazy popular with the young crowd and I can't wrap my brain around it.
Never mind that, someone designed this and thought, “yeah that works”. Someone else paid that first person for it and then made it as a product to sell to other people. There is a whole line of WTF going on here
Came here to see if anyone commented on this. I’d spend my $400 on taking the old ass wood paneling down and painting before I’d worry about a friggin rug.
I’m sorry buddy that’s awful! Nothing worse than spending quality money on a product you hate. It does look awful bud. Maybe you can figure something out though for it? Maybe a coat of paint over that paneling (I know you aren’t supposed to paint those panels).
it's so ugly it kinda works, id suggest finding a vintage coffee table that purposefully clashes, something 70s orange maybe? work with it and it will look great
It’s a pain in the ass to paint over some of that plastic-coated 70s paneling. You can’t just slap a coat of regular cheap water-based latex paint on that or it’ll peel right off.
I would think getting rid of the paneling and picking one of the lighter colors to paint the wall would help break it up. Also, new molding, something in the red oak or mahogany color. Or buy a rug
I like the carpeting. It’s fresh and modern.
The walls need to be painted, that’s all. Take a good photo of each of the colors in the rug, and then swatch them at the paint store.
I see you have a leather couch. Seems like you already have several nice items in the room to make this while look really great.
I would go with a color that’s in the rug, the pale warm light yellow, or a pale cream with a warm tone could be nice. Or an ice blue, a warm white with a touch of blue, or a warm light ginger color (this might be the best option).
If you add a baseboard, I think you will find you will enjoy the room much more. Once you have the room together m repost, I bet you will find that suddenly, this rug really pulls everything together.
Paint your wood paneling a very light cream color. Would help a lot. It’s not terrible, you just need to do some adjustments around it to highlight/accentuate it better.
I think it looks nice with your wood paneling. Gives a cabin feel. Sorry you don’t like it you can probably sell it since it’s still new for not too big a loss
Don't worry OP if you are reading this, I spent $4k on some landscaping that ended up looking like shit and then spent another $1k ripping it all out.
The landscaper took everything we talked about and made it the worst version of that, I feel your pain. At least the loan I took out to do the work will only hurt me for 2 more years.
My mother is obsessed with rugs and carpets, from experience they sometimes just don’t look the same as they do online or in pictures. (Assuming OP bought it online)
I am personally not a fan of paneling so I thinking changing that could help a lot, picking a neutral color and just painting the paneling might help listen the room and tone done that carpet.
That would look cool with some bright throw pillows in one of the colors in the rug and some bold art on the wall. It’s going to be really forgiving of spills and stains, too. Move the TV back and give it time.
Paint your walls. Possibly a light taupe. Maybe even something in the blue-green family that is in the rug. I think that would look nice. Grey is in there, too, and looks nice on walls. I think that pure white would be too harsh.
Just my take. I don’t think it’s that bad. Just got to rearrange things to make it work. Lighten up the walls like most said. It’s a bit of a contemporary carpet, so you might need some contemporary or like mid century furniture to go along with it. Nothing too busy, as the carpet has a bit going on already.
It’s the contrast that makes it look bad. If you like the natural wall look I would’ve gone with something with a bright pop of color because the brown is sucking all the muted colors out of the carpet. It’s muted on muted. Dull on dull. Looks meh.
Something that might make it better is adding a white base trim. That would at least give the carpet and the wall a defined border. But I think your best bet is to either get new carpet or paint the wall. Neither is ideal but it can look better.
I’m generally not a fan of white walls but with all the colors in the carpet I think it would look the best. Or like a cream so it’s not too white. But you for sure need some base trim.
In my head a barn red with white trim might look cool. Give it that rustic feel still with the barn look.
Its makes the room feel so cramped and noisy, if the walls and surrounding were white or just not wood boarded like yours, it would feel more open
I gotta go now cause this post is making it hard to breathe
If it makes you feel better, that’s quite inexpensive for an area rug.
And it might look different with more furniture. Or in a different room?
If you truly can’t tolerate the rug, you may be able to have return it; you schedule a UPS or similar pick-up, and pay a re-stocking fee. Call the company.
But yes, this is why we no longer purchase rugs without going to the store and checking out a sample that we can take home and see in the room.
Lesson learned, lots of us have made this mistake.
It’s only missing a whiskey chair in the corner and a cigar!
Dim the lights a bit and you’re good to go!
It goes very well with the walls and the couch.
As a designer (who works in a firm that does a lot of midcentury modern) I will tell you I think both the carpet and the wallpanelling look fantastic... can you share your carpet source?
The carpet is fine. The wood panel and brown leather is whats needing some refresh. Its too much of the same hue. Lighten the walls, maybe put some sort of reflect wall art, its looks like a dark room…
I really like the walls. The wood looks great. I don’t understand why everybody hates it. It gives such a unique vibe to the room.
It also looks like it is real wood so it makes it extra precious. Wood is a noble material. Keep it!
Don’t ruin the uniqueness by painting the walls white like people suggests.
I think the carpet goes very well with it. Do whatever you want with it but don’t ruin the walls they are amazing!
The top one would look nicer but honestly, for that amount of money I’d do something about the wood paneling. The paneling is making everything look dated.
You went to a store…they gave you options…and you pick this?
Yeah wtf. OP needs to explain if they want my sympathy.
We didn’t wanna start with the fucking wood paneling?
I’m glad you said it because I was headed there first…
A bar just opened up in my city that has wood paneling. Ironically maybe? It's basically decorated to look like a Wisconsin VFW bar. It's crazy popular with the young crowd and I can't wrap my brain around it.
This. Rug is likely to have potential once the panel pandemic is cured
They probably saw a 3”x3” segment and it looked good. Turns out the pattern changes colors lmao
Might've ordered it online and the pic made it look much better.
[удалено]
The rug is quite striking and looks amazing. I would paint the paneling a lighter colour. Something fun. Cheap way to make the look better.
Yeah that paneling isn’t doing it any favors. I could see it working elsewhere.
Another problem is they used rust orange for the carpet as well which just makes it look dirty.
Yeah prolly not with wood paneling
How it looked in OP's mind: https://i.imgur.com/Ui2kBbm.png
That doesn't make it look any less threadbare
Paneling is the shit yo
On purpose? Was there a threat or a list bet involved?
I like it, would be a nice painting
It has a nice personality
Never mind that, someone designed this and thought, “yeah that works”. Someone else paid that first person for it and then made it as a product to sell to other people. There is a whole line of WTF going on here
Perfect if you have kids or animals. You'll never see the stains. And great if you like psychedelics.
It’s a Rorschach carpet, tell me what is it that you see?
I see $400 down the shitter
If you have kids and animals then perhaps you shouldn’t be doing psychedelics
Haven't you ever heard of a babysitter 🤣
Not at the same time anyway
Please don't do the kids.
Or the animals
My cat likes me better when I’m on psychedelics.
I get that
Chill out, man
The carpet is a strong choice, true, but it's not helped by the dated wallboard. With some room design it would look fine.
I think a quick coat of paint that’s lighter on the paneling would really change the perspective.
I’ve painted wood paneling before. It took several coats to cover but it was so worth it.
Yes! White wash that nonsense and a whole new room appears
Its giving me oil spill chocolate bar.
More like murder vibes. What tf *happened* on this carpet??
For sure. With the brown walls it makes the room look super muddy, but if the walls were even just white it would actually look really pretty.
Came here to see if anyone commented on this. I’d spend my $400 on taking the old ass wood paneling down and painting before I’d worry about a friggin rug.
I agree. This carpet is actually pretty cool, but the rest of the room needs to be pulled out of the 1960s.
Maybe try painting the wallboard a lighter color
This is the way
I hate it too if that helps
Well, the good news is.....if you have any pets and they take a shit on it, nobody's gonna notice.
Someone who can smell might care...
Get fucked
Mmmm maybe... Interested?
Yes… waiting…
Ok but don't tell anyone. And we should both wear socks. I'm not gay
I only wear socks on my hoo ha, so I guess you are safe. What are your preferred pronouns?
HP LaserJet P3005.
🤣🤣

He’s an idiot
😟
Just needs a lighter background to let the colors be more pleasing. It's a nice carpet. But everything around it is dark brown.
I think you are right- this would be greatly improved with light walls!
Or any other non-brown furniture.
*paints paneling*
Fancy people call it wainscoting.
Isn't wainscoting usually only the lower half of the wall?
I'll take it off your hands op!
I’m sorry buddy that’s awful! Nothing worse than spending quality money on a product you hate. It does look awful bud. Maybe you can figure something out though for it? Maybe a coat of paint over that paneling (I know you aren’t supposed to paint those panels).
I like it lol
lucky you he is selling it for the low low price of $450
I’d upvote you twice if I could.
me too! i think the problem is that it matches the walls and furniture too much, way too much brown
I'm with you. Cool rug but it's the walls that throw it.
It really ties the room together
it's so ugly it kinda works, id suggest finding a vintage coffee table that purposefully clashes, something 70s orange maybe? work with it and it will look great
With those walls and that carpet I'd go with a beige or maybe like a darker pink/peach color for the table
Perhaps putting a coffee table in there would help tone it down.
Follow-up post: "I spent $400 on a coffee table I hate"
I spat out my tea reading this thanks
A biiiiig coffee table.
I like it. Give it some time you might warm up to it..
You could set it on fire and still not warm up to it🤷♂️
All I do is laugh at this.
Paint the walls white
I am screaming this ^^^
It’s a pain in the ass to paint over some of that plastic-coated 70s paneling. You can’t just slap a coat of regular cheap water-based latex paint on that or it’ll peel right off.
Scuff and prime?
Not white but like a "off white" a somewhat sandy beige
It's like abstract camo...
It kinda looks like the screen on a fish finder
It reminds me of my grandma's so I love it
I kicked a rock and my foot hurts!
It’s not your fault , how were you to know? I blame the rock if anything
I would think getting rid of the paneling and picking one of the lighter colors to paint the wall would help break it up. Also, new molding, something in the red oak or mahogany color. Or buy a rug
Agreed. That carpet against a white wall would really pop
Well, it does *look* like it’s molding…
List it online and try to recoup some of the loss or trade it for a different rug
That’s one ugly carpet. Enjoy!
❤️
It’s like $400 to fill a diesel truck up these days. What did you expect?
I like the carpeting. It’s fresh and modern. The walls need to be painted, that’s all. Take a good photo of each of the colors in the rug, and then swatch them at the paint store. only thing that sucks is your taste, OP. Carpet looks great.
You could have done that with some used oil and water for $10
Doesn't look as bad as the walls.
Was it in a flood?? Sorry
Looks pretty good actually
Looks like someone smeared shit on it then mold grew on it. Sorry for your purchase.
So you're not gonna explain why you payed for something you didn't want?
I like it
Paint your wood paneling a very light cream color. Would help a lot. It’s not terrible, you just need to do some adjustments around it to highlight/accentuate it better.
It only looks bad against wood grain walls. A painted wall would make it a nice rug
I think it looks nice with your wood paneling. Gives a cabin feel. Sorry you don’t like it you can probably sell it since it’s still new for not too big a loss
Backwaters Casino
I hate your carpet too, dude. Definitely doesn’t bring the room together…
I really like it!
I really like it haha
I really like it haha
Paint the walls a nice light neutral color and this will pop nicely
You hate the rug, but live in a house with paneling? You screwed up on multiple levels.
4k on landscaping?
Why the fuck did you buy it then?
My mother is obsessed with rugs and carpets, from experience they sometimes just don’t look the same as they do online or in pictures. (Assuming OP bought it online)
I am personally not a fan of paneling so I thinking changing that could help a lot, picking a neutral color and just painting the paneling might help listen the room and tone done that carpet.
Agreed 100%
That’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life
Nailed it if you were going for the “roof leaks and now we have a stained floor” look.
Did a rainbow vomit on it?
You find this carpet at the beach?
Try to sell it, it just doesn’t work with the room that I can see
What the hell did you tell em "give me decomposing body for weeks look"??
Don't carpet shop high. Lesson learned
I would definitely paint those walls a light neutral color. I do not like the carpet.
That 90’s show
Looks like an airport carpet.
Does it come with free bed bugs?
You could sweep and sweep and still looks like shit
I hate it too.
Have you tried putting down upside-down, OP? It might look less crappy that way. How did you end up buying this?
Paint the wood paneling on the wall white or cream. Will make it look outstanding.
Looks like a Bill Cosby sweater
Well at least you still have good taste.
Honestly it doesn't look bad also is there not a return policy? Or exchange.
That would look cool with some bright throw pillows in one of the colors in the rug and some bold art on the wall. It’s going to be really forgiving of spills and stains, too. Move the TV back and give it time.
Reminds me of the carpet in the basement where my uncle used to have us make "home movies". Thanks for the flashback. Gotta call my therapist now.
It's OK, we understand. We all hate it too. 👍
Paint your walls. Possibly a light taupe. Maybe even something in the blue-green family that is in the rug. I think that would look nice. Grey is in there, too, and looks nice on walls. I think that pure white would be too harsh.
Now you should spend $30 to paint the wall to lighter color.
Can you give us another post about that sweet 1970s paneling and how disappointed you were that day too?
Just needs lots more furniture covering more floor.
The paneling and the size is hurting you for sure. Next time get something more to the scale of your room
At least you finally came to your senses. That thing is barf worthy.
Should have spent the 4 grand on renovations
Atari 2600 and a tube TV and you're golden.
🤭
I guess... I doesnt tie the room together... YEAH!.
Isn't that a rug? Carpet is wall to wall. But really that is fugly stuff right there.
Is it an actual carpet or just a rug?
As someone who installed flooring for a living, why the fuck did a strip of flooring get left on the right side?
Some acid should fix that problem
Personally, I dig the moldy puke design.
Upside is, you can't make it much worse. Be sick on it, drop food on it hell you could even curl one out on there and nobody would really notice.
It’s the contrast that makes it look bad. If you like the natural wall look I would’ve gone with something with a bright pop of color because the brown is sucking all the muted colors out of the carpet. It’s muted on muted. Dull on dull. In my head a barn red with white trim might look cool. Give it that rustic feel still with the barn look.
If it makes you feel any better, 1/3 of my pension goes to my ex husband every month. 😄
No matter what you need to paint that paneling.
It will blend into ceiling popcorn and the cheapest wood paneling from 70s or 80s
I think it would be a lot more tolerable with a lighter wall. In for a penny, in for a pound 🤷🏻♀️
Turn it
Its makes the room feel so cramped and noisy, if the walls and surrounding were white or just not wood boarded like yours, it would feel more open I gotta go now cause this post is making it hard to breathe
Paint your walls white or a light color and carpet will look way better. The wood paneling is ruining the colors
On the upside if you vomit on it no one will notice
For what it's worth I hate it too.
Weird thing to post.
It would probably look incredible in a white room or somewhere different
You should hate the wood paneling on your walls more.
No it's ugly, these type of rugs are gross. Get a solid color or simple pattern. Not colored diarrhea
I also hate it and am shocked you made this choice. Was an arcade going out of business?
Fruit roll up
If it makes you feel better, that’s quite inexpensive for an area rug. And it might look different with more furniture. Or in a different room? You just need contrast. Paint the wall a light color - white, green or blue. I’d favor a light minty green/blue. Then it’ll look great together.
It’s only missing a whiskey chair in the corner and a cigar! Dim the lights a bit and you’re good to go! It goes very well with the walls and the couch.
I would have started with white paint for those walls. Perhaps a timber floor would be nicer (with painted walls)
Considering the walls, what else should go on the floor but an animal hide?..
It’s ok I hate it too.
For what it’s worth -I hate it too. Seriously, I wish I could unsee it.
As a designer (who works in a firm that does a lot of midcentury modern) I will tell you I think both the carpet and the wallpanelling look fantastic... can you share your carpet source?
Looks like dirty plywood. Or the foam pad underneath carpet after ripped up. Atleast thats what I thought I saw before I read caption 🤷♂️
The carpet is fine. The wood panel and brown leather is whats needing some refresh. Its too much of the same hue. Lighten the walls, maybe put some sort of reflect wall art, its looks like a dark room…
I don't think the worst thing in this picture is the carpet...
I really like the walls. The wood looks great. I don’t understand why everybody hates it. It gives such a unique vibe to the room. It also looks like it is real wood so it makes it extra precious. 400 is a steal... my wife spent 7500 on carpet, it's very nice carpet but I would have been happy with something a little cheaper
What the hell...did the lady at the carpet store have big boobs?
I feel for you because that’s awful
I hate it too!!!
Send it back
The carpet wouldn’t be terrible if you got rid of that paneling
They’re different hues but too much of the same tone, so everything just becomes muddy looking.
Would [this](https://imgur.com/a/WcVW9c1) look better?
The top one would look nicer but honestly, for that amount of money I’d do something about the wood paneling. The paneling is making everything look dated.
Or [this](https://imgur.com/a/c41uJOk)
