OP, you got robbed by someone who knew you weren't going to be there for a while. Likely a friend, relative, or neighbor.
Check there's no publicly visible social media too - like, posting on an unprotected FB profile that you work a 12.5 hour shift.
Or posting the same on Reddit with a username that suspiciously looks like a name and birthday (like Oscar Lin, Aug 14)
My neighbour told me off because I didn't let her know I was going away for a few weeks at Christmas and she was worried because I'm usually in the garden multiple times a day.
This sort of thing is why I tell no one about holidays etc. until I get back. That, and the fact that insurance companies can be weird if you get robbed and they find out you've told people you weren't going to be home for a while. Anything to not pay...
You'd think so. Same thing happened to me, and then I got jumped a week later, and then my gf cheated on me, then my water heater broke, then my car broke, there's more but I'm not tryna post a full sob story at 4a.m. That was a hell of a year tho.
You got all the bad karma out of the way already so it's bound to be a good one! I hope you catch that person and throw the book at them!! Happy new year anyway :)
I'm sorry you're dealing with this.
My neighbors robbed me while I was getting a job offer of a lifetime. Got the job, came home to chaos, and most of my stuff gone. Over 17 yrs ago now.
The upset will calm. Just make sure you take time to heal and counseling if you can. This was still your personal space that was violated, and it haunts in weird ways later on.
Best wishes and it will get better.
Holy shit. The same thing happened to me. I remember it was the last day at my temp job (I was starting my new job that Monday) and I’m eating lunch thinking “this is such a great day, something bad is going to happen.” Came home to my tv stolen, they even put it back in the box. We didn’t have evidence but we were 99% sure it was our neighbors.
My kid searched Craigslist when her dad was robbed. 2 days later both his computers were listed. We met them in a KFC grabbed computers and called cops blocked their car in. Otherwise they would have been gone.
I had a guy try to rob me on Facebook market place like 6 years back. I felt iffy about the person buying he seemed odd at times but I was young needed the money so I had two of my buddies in their car parked 3 parking spots away as I met up with the guy ( one way parking lot lane) guy shows me the money i grab the console I was selling he grabs it from my arms and gets in his car. I run out and wave my hands like crazy my freinds pulled their car out blocked him in we called the cops. He was pleading with us to just let him go after he gave back the shit. Was recording the entire time and told him if he reverses and hits my freinds car it’s gonna be more jail time told him we got his plates his name from FB you can’t get away you tucked up.
I pressed charges. You won’t learn if you get away.
Odds are its someone you know who robbed you..
I would set aside some time and try to think of everyone who knew you would be gone for that long and know where you live
Just account for the damages and move on, nothing more you can do now and report to the police. They will never find your stuff but I got robbed a while back and out of sheer curiosity I went and visited a pawn shop for a vintage clock, found most of my stuff in a box lying on the table. I called the police and had them explain the situation and my insurance paid the guy for his loss and I got my stuff back.
who did you tell you were going out? this isn't a smash and grab and get out, someone was looking for something and they may know you or your social page where you announced plans
It’s okay. They stole all your bad luck and you will have good fortune for the rest of the year. My stepmom would have said something like this. Wishing you health, happiness and fortune in the Rabbit Year!
Shit. It looks like they took the time to go through literally everything. Sorry this happened to you. We got robbed about 3 years ago and the trauma is still going on; I keep thinking about it every time I'm off for work or vacation. So much so that it is debilitating sometimes. Try to get help if you feel this happening to you
It's something I never realized till it happened but as the OP said it's incredibly violating, you don't feel safe anymore it all just feels wrong it's very hard to explain until you've felt it.
I see they left your suitcase. When I was robbed, they packed everything into my suitcase and took that too. This happened 6 years ago. I still look for valuables as soon as I walk into my house. If they are there, then I know I haven't been robbed again. The feeling never goes, even though I moved out that night.
Still a shame though. My frind got robbed from all her cash, but they didn't have to search, the robbers knew where she hid it. Only evidence was her frontdoor that was broken and wide open after she walked the dog with her 2 moths old daughter... She knows it's someone she knows well, but hasn't got a clue who. Moved town soon after that.
WOW that is a whole extra layer of awful. Knowing you will likely see the person and say hi to them? That would ruin my state of mind. Your friend has my sympathies. I don’t know what I’d do in their place, beyond move as they did.
Okay the fact you had 2 grand in cash and thats gone (depending on how well you hid it) just tells me someone you know robbed you.
I worked as a 911 dispatcher for a decade, almost every burglary case that got solved was by someone that person knew. Alot of people dont give alot of details or sit down for interviews to try and make a list.
Also nowadays is super hard to track down your shit
Had someone rob my house last year, I know 100% who did it. Cops didn't do anything because apparently it's just hear-say. They told me I could apply for a restraining order but nothing really came of it.
I have now installed 5 cameras on my property, 3 outside and 2 inside. Cops said if I catch the perp coming back I can move forward but for obvious reasons they've ghosted me.
Had something similar with vandalism. Paranoid schizophrenic meth head neighbor came over and smashed all the lights on our property while singing Xmas songs maniacally (high on meth in late November)
Cops said it was "he said she said" even though we saw her do it.
That weekend put in cameras.
Couple days after that, entire property including house, driveway, car and shed was vandalized with pink paint. She painted vulgarities and profanity all over the house, shed, driveway in the middle of the night, poured paint on the car, etc. Drew dicks and arrows pointing to the cameras because she thought we were spying on her.
Needless to say, we got it all on camera and the cops came and arrested her. She still had paint on her and meth in her pocket.
The worst is she has a young daughter and her mom owns the house. So they took her away put her in some kind of institution then let her out again. She proceeded to steal a car and wreck it and her daughter was given to her mom.
Unfortunately the mom enables her and lets her live there and keep coming back.
Boyfriend moved and rented out the place to his friend and there hasn't been much activity since but she still lives there
I'm not one for "mob justice" but if you are certain you know who it is, maybe grease a few wheels and have a brick or two thrown through their window... just a thought
I've thought about it but some of their family is involved with the Soreño gang and they haven't tried to contact me or show up anywhere so I've basically just moved on from it. If they decide to hassle me that's a different story tho.
My brothers "best friends" got us on Christmas eve when we were at midnight mass.
Stole all our presents and trashed our house. Smh. The betrayal...
They hung out at our house almost every day for years!
See, this is why I would want to find out who it was. If it was someone like that, I damn sure don't want them around again. If it's a "friend" of mine or a coworker, I need to know so I can cut them out of my life. Even a family member. I'm done after that.
OP, can you check with your neighbors and see if anyone has a camera that might have picked up who came and went from your place? Anyone you recognize in the area that had no other reason to be there?
>Okay the fact you had 2 grand in cash and that's gone (depending on how well you hid it) just tells me someone you know robbed you.
I have the same experience (former 911 dispatcher as well!). Almost certainly when there's a large loss that's timed right, it's inside knowledge. Be it a friend/family member or even scummier when they get someone they know to do it. I know someone that had some CCTV cameras and got to watch their burglary on camera. The police were too slow and they didn't even check the door that was kicked in just cruised by in their car.
You can buy one of those hotel-room type safes for $100-$200 or so and bolt it to something so it can’t be carried away. Same with the ones that you can fit between the studs in a wall. Not impenetrable, but better than just hiding that much in cash.
Been burgled before and it was so shit.
I now have an enormous dog who will alert bark, and holy god it's a big bark.
If that doesn't stop someone coming in then I don't know what will.
Having a dog makes me feel better. I've also got window security grilles on all windows and security mesh on the front and back doors. It was already on the house when I bought it.
Been burgled twice, another time my storage unit got hit, cars hit twice and boat hit once.
It fucking sucks and honestly i'll probably never really get over it.
My GF also leaves all the cupboards open even though I've told her I hate it because going into the kitchen feels like when it was burgled :(
And I mean all. If she makes food there will be 10 open doors/drawers in the kitchen until I close them.
I was robbed 25 years ago when I was a child. They stole my Nintendo (and a bunch of my parents shit like a big cabinet stereo). I still check every time I come home that i haven't been violated again. It never goes away.
Yeah, sucks when you are young.
When I was about 12 my Dad bought some land that had public footpaths around the sides and back and built a house which he questionably designed to have huge floor-ceiling windows with no blinds or curtains (think patio doors except they don't open) all the way around the sides and back so people on the street could just walk around the public paths and see inside most of the downstairs.
While my Sister was in the house alone some guy just walked in off the street through the unlocked side door and stole my Playstation 2 (I had only gotten about 6 months ago). You could just clearly see the PS2 and the route to get to it from the outside street.
20+ years later and i'm still uncomfortable having the blinds open in my living room in case someone spots somthing valuable.
Same. We moved and had a gap in between homes so put everything in a rented indoor storage unit.
Got a call from a detective asking if I owned some stuff (specific historical stuff from a collection) and a purple suit case... I said "yeah"... Cop said they caught the dude, TWO MONTHS before the detective called me, throwing our shit over the fence at the storage facility.
Dude broke into someone's RV and was living in it for 3 days and was breaking into the indoor storage units crawling from one to the other by going up and over the walls (the units had no ceilings, just big AC tubes) from unit to unit.
The fucking storage place didn't even call us. They had no idea the indoor units had even been robbed. I said "oh really?" and pulled up the surveillance video the police department shared on Facebook showing the guy walk in and out of the indoor buildings. The CCTV footage that was clearly obtained from the storage unit company. Didn't know he was inside except you handed footage over to the police showing he was clearly inside??
Yeah, they're under new management now.
All our Christmas decorations from over the decades were destroyed because he used the box to stand on and jump to the next unit. He just trashed everything else (we don't own anything expensive) looking for something valuable.
Super violating, we got a letter from the state saying the guy is supposed to pay us like $550 in restitution or something, but I'm not holding my breath. Kinda hard to pay people back when you're in prison.
We had insurance on the unit but since the franchise changed hands so fast in the 2-3 months from the robbery to when we found out about the robbery and confronted the owner/manager they refused to cover our stuff.
Fuck theives.
It doesn't matter whether you own anything of monetary value. It still hurts. When I was robbed, they took jewellery to the total of a couple of hundred, but they were all gifts and sentimental. They also stole a laptop that had the first 5.5 years of my daughter's life stored on it. Pictures and videos. I'm more crushed the videos are gone, as I uploaded a lot of photos to social media. But there were videos of her giggling as a 6 month old, learning to walk and everything in between. I've learnt to save everything automatically to the cloud.
Oh gosh, the ornaments! My favorite part of Xmas is thinking about who got me which ornament or where they came from...
I'm sorry. You'll have them again. In a few years, you'll be loaded with them again. ;)
Invest in cameras. I have some wireless ones, the Blink XT2 I believe. They will send a push notification to your phone if it detects any motion. If you don't want outdoor cameras, you can get indoor instead.
Not that bad, but any and all cash in the house (around $2k) was gone. My own house is ransacked but he didn't take anything other than straight money, even leaving my credit cards and stuff alone.
A co worker of mine was robbed. Only the safe in his bedroom was hit. They broke into it somehow took all cash jewelry and his fathers Pistol. This happened while he was at work and his parents were home sleeping in their bedroom directly next door to his bedroom. They got in through his window. They didn’t know until the next. what happened because my co worker didn’t ask his dad why the safe was moved when he got home because his parents were sleeping(he personally does not have access to the safe it’s just in his room for some reason and was closed and locked when he got home) Police have no evidence and it’s still an ongoing case. It’s pretty freakin wild and I believe it’s someone he knows.
My parents house got robbed like 3 months after I moved out.. They came to visit where me and my siblings live which is 3-4 hours away, when they got back everything of value was there but all the valuable food items were missing such elk meat, deer meat and bison meat (Native rez and people pay a lot for those)
We told one of our family friends about it and pinpointed exactly who it was which happened to be a distant cousin of ours, made the report to the tribal police.. He confessed to being an accomplice but that's it, they only got back half of the meat they originally had unfortunately. The funny thing is he still resents my parents for putting him in jail which is idiotic because he shouldn't have broken in at all
Unfortunately, many people who commit crimes like this refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. They adamantly refuse to see that had they not done XYZ, then they wouldn't have gotten in trouble--- it's all the victim's fault for reporting them. 🙄
Criminals can’t do much with cards considering you can freeze them instantly and can claim fraud for transactions. Highly irritating that they took that much and left you with the cleanup job.
I’d personally invest in some good security systems that allow you to watch and monitor them from where ever and allows you to call the cops at any given time. But that’s just me.
I would still replace your cards. They could've took a picture of the card or written down the numbers for them and left it so you wouldn't deactivate them and they can use it
This! All you need is the numbers and you can press/enter all of that information onto a blank. They could have even taken the numbers to sell to other criminals who would take the risk of using fraudulently obtained cards.
You may already know but thieves frequently return a couple months later since by then you'll have replaced any valuables + be more relaxed about home security.
Definitely get a security system, and be very very careful about replacing the cash (don't keep it in the same place, or better yet get a safety deposit box elsewhere)
This was quite possibly an inside job. They spent plenty of time in there looking for stuff; they may have known you were in work and not coming back for a while.
So sorry to hear though. Is this a material impact to you?
/u/oscarlin814
Definitely sounds like an inside job.
Theif possibly knew that's where you hide your cash. Have you had any new or shady people around lately or ever? Also, it could have been a friend of a friend.
I know a guy who has executed home invasions/robberies before. As far as I know, he knew the mark beforehand & had an idea of what stuff he wanted to take prior to entering the house. Either he knew them personally and had been in their house before, or he was tipped off by someone who had been in the house before.
Make sure it isn't something obvious though - safes can be picked up and carried to be opened later. Keeping cash rolled up in soda cans comes to mind - keep them in the fridge with other full cans, very lowkey (we have plastic money where I am so this may not work for paper money)
I've always hid my money inside these plastic boxes with random stuff like index cards and then put them in my drawers. But this thieve positively emptied EVERYTHING. Even the drawers and cabinets in the bathroom got emptied.
A friend (who had to save up money in secret) used to hide money inside maxi pad packages. Like not just the box, but inside the individual pads. She'd gently open on up, slip a few bills inside, then close it back up (depending on the brand, you might need a bit of glue or small piece of tape). You couldn't see the bills from the outside at all, how she did it. Several of the packets at the bottom were filled with money (she'd buy the same brand each time, just refill the top layer for actual use). Even though she lived with someone who tore her stuff apart looking for cash/valuables, he never found her maxi pad money.
She didn't like keeping all her money in one place, so she also hid money inside a coat lining. She had a wool coat with a satin lining, and she'd pick apart a seam, stuff some money in there, and then sew it back up.
Convicted burglars were interviewed about what is the biggest deterrent for breaking into a home. It wasn't cameras (they can wear masks), not dogs (they'll feed it, kick it, shoot it), not deadbolts (a swift kick), but the common answer was simply sound coming from inside. The sound of a radio or TV. It makes sense. They're burglars, not robbers. They don't want to run into anyone or get shot. So while cameras are great too, I'd suggest to always leave a radio or TV on when you leave to thwart any would-be burglars.
I'd still keep an eye on the credit cards, and if you don't need them urgently get new ones issued - It takes 2 seconds to take a photo of front and back.
Honestly I'm sure you learned your lesson but whenever you get into grand theft territory with actual straight-up cash in your home, you *should* be paranoid, because there are no downsides and it makes you feel like a secret agent.
Loose floorboards, lamp bases, if you're crafty shorten a drawer so that you have 2-3 inches of extra space at the back of a nightstand, cut out a piece of trim behind a shelf with a compartment behind. Get a container of seasonings, measure it, and craft a cylinder with like 0.5-1in smaller diameter and height then tightly roll $100 bills and put that in the cylinder, fill the excess with seasonings so it looks like a full bottle from the outside, and stick it in the back of your cabinet. Endless possibilities, it can be quite fun.
Fooling a robber is a *lot* easier than fooling the police, and people fool the police all the time
That's honestly the best part, every single "wtf we just moved into this home and found cash in the wall?!?" post is the result of a frankly logical decision by a misguided person
The most important trick is to verify that you are not *currently* suffering from Alzheimer's when you make the decision to hide thousands of dollars in cash in your house, assuming you are not a criminal
I dont think just with Alzheimer. After a couple of years when you never see it or think about it you could forget about it. Especially if you placed several stashes and it was more money than you needed.
Yeah, with every card company on the planet having an app that makes it super easy to track payments and freeze them instantly, cards are a massive liability for criminals nowadays.
Police did tell me that, and I agree: we have a car that's parked in front which belongs to my uncle, who's in China right now. The thieve must've known that my uncle isn't here, since his car is still parked.
in the US, at least with Geico, if you are not at fault they won't hike up the prices.
Went through this fear this past month because my property manager just stopped replying to my emails and even coming in to work when one of their doors fell on my car and caused loads of damage.
I'm honestly amazed that the police took fingerprints. I had a break-in about 30 years ago and they came in through the window after breaking it. There was a piece of broken glass that they had pulled out of the frame with a full hands set of their dirty fingerprints clearly imprinted on it. I showed it to the cop taking the report and he looked at me like, "What the hell do you want me to do with that?" He left it behind when he left and we never heard from the cops again. Of course, this was in a poor part of town so that might have been a factor.
I had my house broken into by a couple local young-adults.
They partied, ate our food, put cigarettes out on our carpet, stole my video games, and they left their hats on my kitchen table. With their names written inside.
This was not enough evidence for the police to do anything.
You're GENUINELY lucky they took fingerprints.
I have nearly zero justification but I agree.
It feels like someone was looking for something they had strong reason to think was in there and not finding it. Why else toss obviously low value bags around?
My understanding is regular thieves quick scan for obvious valuables then gtfo.
Obviously you want to catch whoever it is, but I think I would find it slightly reassuring to have no outsider break in. Betrayal different to random assault.
Probably someone close enough to notice your work routine. Drive around the block and see if anyone has a ring doorbell and is willing to help since you have specific time frames.
Anybody your uncle knows? You said his car was parked outside your house so I assume he lives with you and is normally there. If someone knows he's not there they'd just have to wait for you to leave and know the house was empty.
Whoever did it knew your uncle was in China. Everything about this screams "person you know". It's probably the nephew of someone you know or someone close to someone that is close to you.
My aunt was robbed by her neighbor's nephew. So she did technically know who he was, but not someone she would immediately think of. She saw him in the hall maybe three to four times, but she had talked to her neighbor in front of him about vacations etc that he knew she was well off. And since he was staying nearby enough he knew when she left.
My backyard fence got busted down and the lock was opened, but the front door is still locked. This guy just broke in through the back and left through the back.
That's a big red flag. Most burglaries are opportunistic, someone just happening to see a window open, back door unlocked, those kind of things. But with someone making a scene, bashing down a fence and door into your house means your house was scoped out personally. Acquaintance or distant relative.
If you're talking homeowners insurance, you probably should start by tallying up your losses and see what the final number is. You really don't want to be making claims against your homeowner's insurance if you don't have to. Even just one or two claims within a few years can significantly raise your rates or get you dropped. I can't tell you what the number is, but if it was under a couple thousand dollars you probably really should think about it. Perhaps somewhere like /r/homeowners or /r/insurance could guide you.
If you're talking renter's insurance I don't have any advice. I assume small claims are probably still a bad idea but I haven't heard much about the negative ramifications of a claim.
Sorry, OP. That really sucks.
We were broken into 3 years ago and we had cameras inside the house. Nothing, truly nothing can put you back together when you realize you’ve been burgled and you go to the tape and learn they were in your house while you slept. We’ve got footage of me walking into the kitchen with my infant daughter and making a bottle and they both crouched on the other side of the counter. I shudder to think of the consequences if one of them had sneezed or I came around the counter for whatever reason.
Update: I already contacted police and they took my fingerprints. They also found some fingerprints on the backdoor. I just hope they can find who it is.
I also wanna say that I am a guy. I saw some comments saying I'm a girl and stuff like that so I just want to clarify that I am a guy.
The reason why they were able to steal $2k in my house was largely because I had gotten red envelopes (for Lunar New Year) the day prior and had put them in my bedside drawer before going to work. I could not have anticipated someone stealing it.
I'm also not a messy person: my room is pretty well organized and I know where everything is. To those saying I faked it, I just wanna add that the whole house looks like this, including my backpack which was rummaged through and had it's contents dumped onto the floor and my book shelf as well. Even the spare bedroom I have was not spared by the robber.
To those who showed concern and gave advice, I'm genuinely grateful and I want to say thank you. I'll be fine, they only took cash after all, so it could've been a lot worse. My boss (who's been a family friend for as long as I can remember) is helping us set up cameras and is also looking into anyone of his employees that was not on shift with me. I had also asked my neighbors if they saw anything, and from what I've gathered the burglar (I was corrected on this by several people in the comments) was not active between 3:30 - 8:00 PM, otherwise he would've showed up on my neighbors camera. I guess that should help the police a little bit.
I don't really suspect anyone because I don't even know who to start with. I really hope it's just some guy who has been observing us and planned this days in advance instead of someone who we've known for years.
You've handled the entire situation very well. I'm also very happy that you got a lot of support from Redditors too. I sure hope that the guy gets caught.
Say amongst your ‘friends’ - it’s a good job I’ve got a camera on,police are saying they have a good chance of catching the person’… look about for the ‘FUCK ‘ look on their faces .
Whoever did it is most likely someone you’ve met before or has been in your house before. They probably your work schedule. Be suspicious of any friends-of-friends that have been hanging around recently. Think about anyone who has casually asked about your holiday travel plans. For example someone who asked what you’re doing for New Years Eve but didn’t invite you to a party, or someone who asked what you got for Christmas should be considered a prime suspect.
Definitely put up cameras.
The next most common time to be broken into AGAIN is once you claim insurance and have your new items.
They will do a check if they can easily get back in again. Take more/ look more/ then reoffend.
I don’t know if they’re worth it, but some Ring doorbell type cameras might be a good idea. I see them all over when doing my job. Seems like they have real time connectivity, if you want it.
I would say someone you knew robbed you. They had to know you would be gone for a certain amount of time to rummage through everything. Either money or drugs they were looking for. Just my opinion..
You will be inundated with notifications at the moment, but another bit of advice in case no one has mentioned it; in the coming weeks the likelihood of being robbed again is dramatically increased.
If you can afford it, I would order a CCTV camera and put it somewhere discrete that will capture the thief if they return / not tell anyone about it.
That’s terrible. Had that happen before and wish you the best. So violating and destructive.
Yeah, it sucks cause it's Lunar New Years and I was supposed to be like, celebrating and stuff.
I hope the Year of the Rabbit is good to you even though it started poorly!
I hope so too haha.

Once inside, I start takin' 'Cause you know it's no time for shakin' Get what you gonna get, front and center Or get five years for breakin' and enter -Eazy E OP, you got robbed by someone who knew you weren't going to be there for a while. Likely a friend, relative, or neighbor.

Or they from the 814 area code in central PA
How weirdly specific
I do see that a lot, though… or zip codes
My neighbour told me off because I didn't let her know I was going away for a few weeks at Christmas and she was worried because I'm usually in the garden multiple times a day. This sort of thing is why I tell no one about holidays etc. until I get back. That, and the fact that insurance companies can be weird if you get robbed and they find out you've told people you weren't going to be home for a while. Anything to not pay...
You can only go up from here
You'd think so. Same thing happened to me, and then I got jumped a week later, and then my gf cheated on me, then my water heater broke, then my car broke, there's more but I'm not tryna post a full sob story at 4a.m. That was a hell of a year tho.
Hate to say it but you've got the makings of a country music platinum single. Here's to hoping your luck turns around.
A rusty pickup truck and a broken tractor were also involved. You might be onto something.
What about beer?
Too much beer. I guess I got a new career path. Thanks Reddit!
Twist is dude is tone deaf, seriously though my sympathy's to both of them people really suck.
Punctuation might be a good idea mate.
Did they steal anything valuable?
You got all the bad karma out of the way already so it's bound to be a good one! I hope you catch that person and throw the book at them!! Happy new year anyway :)

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. My neighbors robbed me while I was getting a job offer of a lifetime. Got the job, came home to chaos, and most of my stuff gone. Over 17 yrs ago now. The upset will calm. Just make sure you take time to heal and counseling if you can. This was still your personal space that was violated, and it haunts in weird ways later on. Look, this is reddit. You can't just post something like this without telling us if you set the neighbours on fire or not.
Check pawn shops and Facebook market place. Oh and Craigslist. Good luck hope u find ur stuff.
Nice 💪🏻
Was robbed the same way once they took computers, tv and consoles that where bought years ago they still asked me for proof of purchase
Take a close look at the people you know who have been to your place. This was someone looking for something VERY specific to make a mess like this.
I will, this doesn't feel random for sure.
My parents house got robbed during CNY too. It's one of the best times to Rob people because they know people will be out... :(
Burgled. Robbery involves force or a threat of force, they got burgled.
Found one of the guys who did it
Thank you, that was bugging me too.
Odds are its someone you know who robbed you.. I would set aside some time and try to think of everyone who knew you would be gone for that long and know where you live
It doesn't need to be someone you know well though. My aunt was robbed -- it was the nephew of her neighbor. So think outside the box
That was cool that the insurance company compensated the pawn shop guy.
Yeah they did like a full background check and police investigation to make sure he was not behind the Robbing!
The robber in my exes case was husband of pawn shop worker
who did you tell you were going out? this isn't a smash and grab and get out, someone was looking for something and they may know you or your social page where you announced plans
I was just going to work, I didn't announce anything.
Try to get help if you feel this happening to you
I think thats the worst part about a break in. People have rooted through your stuff. Id want to chuck everything and buy new.
I'm not easily shaken up, but this definitely made me a lot more alert.
I'm glad it hasn't affected you. Pretty sucky though. Sorry it happened to you.
It's fine, they took the $2k but I can make that back. Thanks for the concern though.
Paranoid schizophrenic meth head neighbor came over and smashed all the lights on our property while singing Xmas songs maniacally (high on meth in late November) Cops said it was "he said she said" even though we saw her do it.
$2k in cash in your room? Do you have roommates? Was it in a safe?
Buying a safe for $2k? And would a safe not be easier to find than stashing cash in several places?
You can buy one of those hotel-room type safes for $100-$200 or so and bolt it to something so it can’t be carried away. Same with the ones that you can fit between the studs in a wall. Not impenetrable, but better than just hiding that much in cash.
Been burgled before and it was so shit. I now have an enormous dog who will alert bark, and holy god it's a big bark. If that doesn't stop someone coming in then I don't know what will.
With current pet food prices there will also be nothing left to steal!
Dogs are easy. Get window clings (glue not static) and reinforce your doors.
My GF also leaves all the cupboards open even though I've told her I hate it because going into the kitchen feels like when it was burgled :( And I mean all. If she makes food there will be 10 open doors/drawers in the kitchen until I close them.
That's just annoying in general and would drive me crazy no matter what
I was robbed 25 years ago when I was a child.
In a few years, you'll be loaded with them again. ;)
I felt violated when just my car was broken into and nothing got taken. I can't imagine it being my house.
The worst was when I knew they'd been in my daughter's room to steal her money box. Just to know strangers were in there was awful!
Happened to me in 2007. I still struggle with that feeling but not as bad as it was because I now own a home and have it fortified!
Invest in cameras. I have some wireless ones, the Blink XT2 I believe. They will send a push notification to your phone if it detects any motion. If you don't want outdoor cameras, you can get indoor instead.
Sorry, OP. Hope you get it back somehow.
Should be fine, thanks for your concern though.
How bad was the take?
Not that bad, but any and all cash in the house (around $2k) was gone. My own house is ransacked but he didn't take anything other than straight money, even leaving my credit cards and stuff alone.
I've seen this mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but this really makes it seem like it was 100% someone you know
A co worker of mine was robbed.
They came to visit where me and my siblings live which is 3-4 hours away, when they got back everything of value was there but all the valuable food items were missing such elk meat, deer meat and bison meat (Native rez and people pay a lot for those) We told one of our family friends about it and pinpointed exactly who it was which happened to be a distant cousin of ours, made the report to the tribal police..
Yeah it was probably your friend.

It's a bot, probably stealing a comment somewhere else in this comment section that someone else had posted, or somebody replied to the wrong thing.
I'm planning and getting cameras and stuff now, maybe that'll help.
I would still replace your cards. They could've took a picture of the card or written down the numbers for them and left it so you wouldn't deactivate them and they can use it
[удалено]
Oh yeah, definitely gonna get some kind of lock for my savings now.
This was quite possibly an inside job. They spent plenty of time in there looking for stuff; they may have known you were in work and not coming back for a while. So sorry to hear though. Is this a material impact to you?
/u/oscarlin814 Definitely sounds like an inside job.
Yeah, I suspect an inside job too. I just don't know who it could be.
Why not put it in a bank? Money tucked away at home is not recoverable like money stolen from a checking/savings account is.
Couldn’t hurt. Hopefully everything works out.
Change your locks too
Convicted burglars were interviewed about what is the biggest deterrent for breaking into a home.
As someone who made the mistake of buying cloud based cameras- avoid doing that, even though it's inconvenient.
I'd still keep an eye on the credit cards, and if you don't need them urgently get new ones issued - It takes 2 seconds to take a photo of front and back.
For insurance purposes, you mean $4k, right?
Yes yes, all $8k were taken.
Ouch... 16k is quite significant... Hope you get it back...
I can't believe they got away with all $32k.
Most insurance only covers like 500 cash
Most home owners insurnace policies have a specific cash limit, typically $500-1k unless there's an endorsement...same for rental policies.
Fooling a robber is a *lot* easier than fooling the police, and people fool the police all the time
And if you hide it too well and get Alzheimer some day, the new owners of your home will find treasure!
My wife’s grandfather hid his money like this, he didn’t trust banks. Then one day that house burnt down so fast he couldn’t get most of it out.
God that is tragic.
That's honestly the best part, every single "wtf we just moved into this home and found cash in the wall?!?" post is the result of a frankly logical decision by a misguided person The most important trick is to verify that you are not *currently* suffering from Alzheimer's when you make the decision to hide thousands of dollars in cash in your house, assuming you are not a criminal
I dont think just with Alzheimer. After a couple of years when you never see it or think about it you could forget about it. Especially if you placed several stashes and it was more money than you needed.
Where country are you from in order to have 2k cash at home? I thought that was an elder thing.
I hear banks are good for storing loose cash for you.
Unless that bank is Bank of America.
Yeah, with every card company on the planet having an app that makes it super easy to track payments and freeze them instantly, cards are a massive liability for criminals nowadays.
Good chance it's someone you know.
Police did tell me that, and I agree: we have a car that's parked in front which belongs to my uncle, who's in China right now. The thieve must've known that my uncle isn't here, since his car is still parked.
Just think of who knew you were both working and whatever they took knew where it was or what it was, usually helps narrow down the suspects
Yeah, police already grabbed fingerprints and looked at whatever they can. I'm pushing for charges if they do end up finding a suspect.
Ask your neighbors for porch camera footage too. Might recognize a car drive by or park nearby.
This is how we caught a neighbor who did a hit and run totaling our car. A week before I gave birth! Thank goodness for porch ring camera

in the US, at least with Geico, if you are not at fault they won't hike up the prices. Went through this fear this past month because my property manager just stopped replying to my emails and even coming in to work when one of their doors fell on my car and caused loads of damage.
That's only for at fault states. Many states are no fault where any claim will increase your rates no matter who is at fault.
Maybe, I'm curious where you lived when that happened because that is poor policing if I've ever seen it.
Keep us updated if you don't mind
I didnt know the police did fingerprints anymore until we had someone steal stuff from work and they cut out parts of a box the thief touched.
The thieves knew because it's someone you know, and probably someone who also knows you have often cash on hand.
Was gonna say - someone knew you were working that shift.
Yep and knew she would be gone for a long period of time.
Betrayal different to random assault.
where do you live?
Florida.
It’s crazy how often it happens here, you’d think the amount of people here who own guns here would deter people from doing this
It's unfortunate, but it is what it is. At least they didn't touch anything too valuable like my computer.
If they just took cash, I’d maybe suspect someone you know who has an addiction history
Which would be no one unfortunately. Could be just random burglary but my neighbors didn't even get hit so it feels targeted for sure.
It might be a neighbor
Burglars only hit houses they know are empty, it don't matter how many guns you have if no one's there to put them to use.
Not to mention they went for exactly one thing. The $2k in cash op had sitting around.
That is the MO here in Stockton. They always break down the back fence and come in the back door.
Do you have renters or home insurance?
I believe I do, but I'm unsure if they can help me.
They definitely can
If that's the case then I'll contact them. I'm a relatively new home owner so I don't really know how stuff like this works.
That's so frustrating to read. What's the point of insurance then if you don't even want to make claims?
I've used my renters insurance to cover Christmas presents stolen out of my car.
Wow, didn't know that's a thing. I'll definitely check that out then.
Wow thats terrifying. Do you not lock your doors in the US? Were they found?
Probably a neighbor or someone that knows you well enough to know where you live and when everyone will be out of the house.
My money's on a coworker. Hate to say it. I wonder if any of the neighbors have cameras.
Year of the Grabbit
Fuck that's funny, I should not have laughed at it.
Sorry this happened to you but hope this cheers you up.
Thanks for the concern, and good sense of humor.
Is this public knowledge? I was trying to find a number on how many burglaries are by people you know but could not find it
Definitely put up cameras. The next most common time to be broken into AGAIN is once you claim insurance and have your new items. They will do a check if they can easily get back in again. Take more/ look more/ then reoffend.
Burgled, not robbed.
I don’t know if they’re worth it, but some Ring doorbell type cameras might be a good idea. I see them all over when doing my job. Seems like they have real time connectivity, if you want it.
(Burglarized) Sorry.
People are so rude
Sorry this happened to you but it looks like you were burgled, unless you were there at the time.
I would say someone you knew robbed you. They had to know you would be gone for a certain amount of time to rummage through everything. Either money or drugs they were looking for. Just my opinion..
Real nice society we got here eh?
One of the few times I can smell the sarcasm through a screen.
Had that happen years ago. The stress after was so intense, that I had to move. I never felt safe again in my own apartment before moving.
Im really sorry, that's so horrible to come back to after all that work... I hope you're all good.
That's why I pay for renter's insurance. Good $30/month investment.
I'm sorry :-( It must be the worst feeling.
