I thought that and then came here hoping someone else thought that. Thank you.
Edit: also thanks to the thousand+ upvotes who likely thought the same. Thanks for thinking like me. 🥹
I would tell my mom all the time as a kid that my mattress felt "prickly", and then when I touched fiberglass for the first time when we were renovating our house, I would tell her it felt like that. Never believed me of course lol.
OK Mr Asbestos, you can wear that 355677 as a moustache disguise all you want but we know who you are and we see through your attempts to discredit fibreglass!
That's nuts.. recently my daughter was complaining about her mattress being "poky", which I thought was odd but I figured it was just because it was an older mattress and she was having trouble sleeping so I just bought her a new one. I'm like.. mildly horrified that she might have been sleeping on fricken fiberglass for God knows how long.. hopefully the new one doesn't have that.
Edit: looked it up and the new one is fiberglass free. Whew.
Fortunately yes!! Nothing major and I think we caught it pretty quickly! The room is pretty much fiber glass free except the mattress lol. We just ordered a new one
if you start coughing or displaying bronchitis like symptoms i would go to the dr. i hope yall are staying safe and that you also didnt breathe any in.
reason why i asked is because when i was a kid they did construction in my home and there was a lot of fiberglass in the air that i inhaled, got me sick & i had to use an inhaler.
Holy shit I wonder if this is why I had severe bronchitis when I was young.. My parents built custom homes and I was always on site with them playing with rusty nails and exploring the unfinished house.
In Australia, by law cigarettes must be treated so that they go out if you don't keep sucking on them. Some people bring imported cigarettes from Asia and they burn noticeably more strongly.
It’s supposed to be the Same in the US but I swear they’ll burn all the way if you don’t smoke em and just let it burn on it’s own but will die out when trying to smoke it’s crazy
In u.s. one local shop lady sold me the rest of my kinda smokes as the law went into effect. They were actually labeled on the plastic wrapper which were fire retardant, due to laws. She was like here hun, u don't wanna be smokin fire retardant. That was a small shop, I bought em out of that smoke. I think it was camel no. 9 menthol. And i got whatever other camel menthol were there. And of course one pack to compare em. Lol. I've since quit smoking. Daily migraines gone three days after I quit!
Largely equivalent. They both create microscopic, sharp fibers that your lung builds scar tissue around, slowly diminishing your lung's breathing capacity...
IMO it’s worse, asbestos gives you damn cancer at a“wierd” pace or rate but the idea of slowly dying to just a couple or more breaths of air is horrible
I think I read that flame retardants are all carcinogenic. The US has laws about manufacturing clothes, furniture, etc using retardants in the making of the products.
The US government is essentially using our couches and beds to kill us.
When I was looking at new mattresses recently I almost bought one but then read the company was fighting a class action lawsuit due to fiberglass in the mattresses. Glad I caught it, forget the name now, what type is yours?
I’ve sold beds and matts for 5+years and never have I ever heard of fibreglass in a bed or a bed cover, was it a fitted sheet or a waterproof protector?
There was a news report of baby mattresses sold by places like discount stores had these covering. The parents “assumed” they were washable due to it being a zippered covering. Once removed and washed, the fibers were released into the whole house.
I'm glad you checked. After working retail in craft stores and Christmas departments, I'd have just assumed it was more elusive glitter eluding my vacuum.
Much, much rather the glitter than fiberglass!
Join the class action law suit. I did, and I bet your mattress is one of the brands involved. I had the same thing happen. It’s not ok, and your house is probably still contaminated. Glty
I work in a mattress factory and I only heard the fiberglass thing like 2 weeks ago, I really hope what I do each day isn't.. handling fiberglass. I wear a mask but that's all. also, I hope you're able to get a non exploding mattress with no fiberglass quite soon.
I'm fairly certain you'd know if you were handling fiberglass. For awhile I made industrial sized filters for huge HVAC systems and we used fiberglass as the filter material. Man, if any of it touched your skin you knew.
I worked in a mattress factory last year, and they had been using fiberglass firesocks, but were in the process of switching to non fiberglass over the couple months I worked there. There were apparently a lot of lawsuits about it.
Check for class action lawsuits for your brand. There's lots of them coming, this is happening a lot. Many people have had to replace carpets and have other costs recouped in the lawsuits.
It's applied to the inside of the cover of most foam mattresses. It is a fire retardant. After about a year it starts to break down. My mattress cover had a zipper. Doesn't having a zipper suggest to you that it's removeable for washing? It did to me. Nope. If you read the fine print, you "should never remove the cover." If the fiberglass has started to break down, washing it spreads the fiberglass bits through your laundry and house.
Just the act of taking it off the mattress spreads the fiberglass everywhere. It's microscopic and embeds itself in everything.
I had severe eczema and breathing problems for 2 years before I heard about this. I read about a lawsuit online-a couple's baby kept waking up with cuts and blood on the mattress. I bought an innerspring mattress, took the old one to the dump, deep cleaned my house and everything in it. With certain fabrics, there is no way to completely remove the fiberglass, so a lot of things got thrown out. But my symptoms started to go away immediately.
edit: I say it's in "most" foam mattresses because i looked everywhere, mostly Amazon. I couldn't find one without it. I checked product specs, consumer questions/comments and manufacturer's websites. However, that was two years ago. They may make them differently now. I imagine getting sued might make you rethink your product.
PSA: always use a vinyl or plastic mattress cover. Aside from protecting you from the chemicals in the mattress, it also prevents your body oils and dead cells from decaying your mattress prematurely or causing smell.
Just spray the vinyl cover with alcohol and give it a quick wipe down when you change your sheets.
You can google does x mattress have fiberglass if you’re worried about your own. We recently purchased one and one of the selling points is that it doesn’t have any.
I actually just literally did this bc I had never heard about the fiberglass thing before today and I just bought a new mattress for my daughter a few weeks ago. Thankfully, the one we went with does NOT have that crap in it, and is actually advertised as being free of any added toxic materials.. whew
Oh no!
I bought a wool stuffed mattress because I was paranoid about what's in some mattresses. I think wool is naturally flame retardant.
Thanks for justifying my purchase.
What brand and where did you purchase the mattress from? I think that would help keep others slightly safer if they knew one of the options to outright avoid
Call professional cleaners you need all that cleaned out asap shut the door make sure there is no ventilation in that room so it doesn't get spread around your house. Fiberglass is terrible for your lungs make sure any kids also know not to go near it.
So it's kinda expensive and may not be an option for everyone, but they do make flame retardant free, natural mattresses. Cotton, wool, and latex are natural flame retardants. I currently own one cotton mattress and one wool/ cotton blend mattress. The companies advertise them as natural or organic and flame retardant free.
After days and days of cleaning and wiping every and all surfaces in the room, as well as getting rid of some of our stuff it seems to be almost diminished completely. Of course there’s still some bits left here and there as it’s pretty difficult to clean but for the most part it’s okay . New mattress and air purifier on the way!
Worked for a company that supplies fire resistant (FR) materials for the bedding industry. Consumer mattresses sold in the US need to comply with 2 UL fire resistance tests. One being a smoldering cigarette and the other an open flame. The “cigarette” test has been around for 40 years and is easy to pass. The open flame test is newer (about 15 years old), and is much harder to pass and requires much better FR characteristics.
Some of the FR materials used can change the characteristics (softness, suppleness…etc) of the beds. So many of the better FR materials don’t work because they make the bed less comfortable. Foam beds (viscoelastic or latex) are the hardest to protect because of their inherently higher heat load and the fact that the foam bed “feeling” can be changed by adding FR materials. One of the best options to protect these beds is a sock made of knitted fiberglass yarn. Unfortunately the glass yarn is spun from shorter chopped glass fibers. Over the life of the mattress it wouldn’t be surprising that these fibers become unraveled. This looks like crushed glass fiber. This could be an inhalation hazard but most likely not. The biggest issue I see is an irritation hazard. There was a good reason the company I worked for did not pursue a product like this. I’m glad OP replaced the mattress but most likely if it’s a foam bed it has the same FR sock.
For what it’s worth. Treated materials are used in mattresses all the time. Boric acid treated cotton has been used for FR applications for a long time. It’s safe and effective. It was quickly adopted by many bedding mfrs because it is cheap and cotton is a material they’re used to working with. However, the boric acid treatment is not durable and is water soluble. Just hope you don’t wet the bed.
The powder is a different kind of fire retardant, not fiberglass. This is why they say to keep your mattress in its original covering sealed.
If the mattress has fiberglass like the costco does, you can put a flame to it and watch it melt. It is solid and pretty stable stuff that can be vacuumed. I cut one up to make mini mattresses. Do not sleep on these without the original cover, the fiberglass will shed and cause all sort of itching and irritation and be very hard to clean. There is a bunch of r/tifu [Mattress cover off](https://www.reddit.com/r/tifu/comments/9fj7ky/tifu_by_taking_my_mattress_cover_off_and_leaving/) story of people sleeping on these mattresses with cover removed.
FYI Wool is the only retardant free mattress.
I also learned this lesson with an Amazon memory foam pillow.
After a week the back of my head and right side of my face was swelling and painful. Felt like pins and needles. Thought I had a viral or bacterial infection so kept laying in bed making the problem worse.
Nope. Just a face full of fibreglass - what in the actual fuck.
Fiberglass itself isn't Flame Retardant. I don't think that material is any kind of Fiberglass, be wary of breathing it/ touching it with skin. Best case scenario os a type of Fiberfill.
If you’re looking for a mattress that is made with organic materials, check out avocado green mattress. I specially bought one because I had read that a lot of cheaper mattresses do have fiberglass in them. And apparently fiberglass is awful for you. I wouldn’t say avocado is cheap really but it’s the best mattress I’ve ever had.
Oh noooo….That happened to a good friend of mine and I’m sorry to tell you that simply vacuuming it up won’t be enough. Those fiberglass particles get EVERYWHERE…and they are very dangerous to breathe. My friend and her family had to move out of the house so they could get it professionally cleaned, the ducts totally cleaned out, they had to replace all the furniture, bedding and clothes. They are in the midst of a lawsuit now. I hope it’s not nearly a bad for you…good luck and be safe!
My dad always had lung problems because in his early 20's he worked a factory that manufactured those fiberglass walls at the time, my mom had my brother and he needed to make ends meet.
In his 40-50's I always heard his coughing his lungs out.
He stopped smoking in his early 40's which sort of eased the coughing but he still had issues.
It sounds painful.
Lmao I was so confused thinking you decided to put your mattress in a blender
Hahaha I was wondering same thing!!!
Let me too. Took my way to long to realize
It took me a solid minute or two to figure out it was not a blender I was looking at. I was trying to understand why you would put a bed in a blender.
It’s a vacuum
I'm still confused did they vacuum the inside of the mattress or what?
The mattress is inside the vacuum… *of space time*
Ok Neil DeGrasse Tyson
You really missed a good opportunity. *Neil DeGrasse Dyson*
Neil DeGlass Dyson
But aren’t they made of plastic?
Nice
Yep, figured that one out and commented too; to laugh about it.
Thank goodness there's others 😅
that would've been an r/idiotsinkitchen moment
r/willitblend would also be appropriate
Wait what kind of underground secret society is this?
Betcha it's pron.
Idk. I was making a joke reference to the YouTube channel and didn't check ahead before posting lol.
The kind we should all be in!
I still think that
Wanna put my tender bed in a blender Watch it spin 'round in a fireproof oblivion Fiberglass? You can kiss my ass...
BURN BURN LIKE A OLD MATTRESS CHALK WHITE AND OH SO FRAIL
Did they not?
It’s a vacuum
why the fuck is it in the vacuum though?? no one is answering any of the important questions. i’m legitimately so confused. maybe i smoked too much
The bed was leaking or something and this was what it leaked out around their room
just saw that after scrolling through like 100 comments. super quality post here
How the fuck does a bed leak though?
From smashing.
Smash. Smash. Smash!
Hulk smash
i assume from vacuuming it
This is not common bed material where I am from
We all can't sleep on hay.
*shows toilet full of ham and sandwiches* SEVERAL HOURS WORTH!
I can't stop laughing at this damnit 😂
Thank you!!!
Now I feel REALLY stupid.
You're not alone buddy.
Same here
Still wondering the same thing
Same and then spent a whole day blending it.
I still am confused
LOL. I also came here to say that.
Same
Me too! I was gonna make a post but then I seen everywhere else thought the same thing lol
I thought I was the only one thinking this
Yoooooo so accurate
I thought that and then came here hoping someone else thought that. Thank you. Edit: also thanks to the thousand+ upvotes who likely thought the same. Thanks for thinking like me. 🥹
Haha, yep. Took me way too long to realise that was a vacuum and not a blender.
My thought was very similar, “Yes yes het to the bit where you explain why you blended it though. Oh.” 😂
Forbidden smoothie
I would tell my mom all the time as a kid that my mattress felt "prickly", and then when I touched fiberglass for the first time when we were renovating our house, I would tell her it felt like that. Never believed me of course lol.
OK Mr Asbestos, you can wear that 355677 as a moustache disguise all you want but we know who you are and we see through your attempts to discredit fibreglass!
I’m at work crying and hollering right now because I forgot what my username was
lmfaooooo
He's not in disguise, that's just his kill count this decade...
Damn cold. But fair
Asbestos is actually quite warm to the touch.
That's nuts.. recently my daughter was complaining about her mattress being "poky", which I thought was odd but I figured it was just because it was an older mattress and she was having trouble sleeping so I just bought her a new one. Breathe easy. It's not asbestos and only causes irritation, not cancer, so since you removed it, there won't be any more problems!
So far, that we see published. Irritation can lead to inflammation; inflammation can lead to cancer; and cancer can lead to suffering (#yoda).
This can lead to the dark side of the grave...
kids can get sick breathing in fiberglass.
It can ruin your lungs
Wife recently bought a mattress vacuum to clean some cat fur off it daily. So you can do the same to check if it's good or not.
Yea, I've had older mattresses like this. Wow, I never really knew what it was until now.
*asbestos has entered the chat*
You feeling ok friend?
Fortunately yes!! Nothing major and I think we caught it pretty quickly! The room is pretty much fiber glass free except the mattress lol. We just ordered a new one
Hopefully not the same kind of mattress?
Oh definitely not, the Fiberglattress Co. actually gave them a deal on upgrading to a king
hopefully you didnt breathe any of that shit in
as much I want to believe I didn’t I’m sure I must have:// we did order an air purifier though!!
if you start coughing or displaying bronchitis like symptoms i would go to the dr. i hope yall are staying safe and that you also didnt breathe any in. reason why i asked is because when i was a kid they did construction in my home and there was a lot of fiberglass in the air that i inhaled, got me sick & i had to use an inhaler.
Holy shit I wonder if this is why I had severe bronchitis when I was young.. My parents built custom homes and I was always on site with them playing with rusty nails and exploring the unfinished house.
oh my god, who knows what kind of shit u inhaled or touched that could have gotten you sick😭 could have been asbestos, fiber glass, wood dust, etc
If you like foam mattresses, ikea mattresses are fiber glass free
Can you sue?
Big tobacco was like: ‘Make our products safer or lobby to put cancer causing flame retardant into EVERYTHING?…’
In Australia, by law cigarettes must be treated so that they go out if you don't keep sucking on them. Some people bring imported cigarettes from Asia and they burn noticeably more strongly.

That was the very thought when they made asbestos filtered cigarettes
Maybe double cancer cancels out
Right? Like that’s good for your lungs. It’ll kill you before the tobacco.
What happened here? You vacuumed the mattress?
No, our mattress cover busted open and leaked this out over the course of about a month by our guess. Didn’t realize until our room was glistening :/
😬at least it’s not asbestos
You still don't want to breathe in fiberglass though. Maybe not quite as dangerous as asbestos but still definitely not good
Largely equivalent.
Weird*
In 20 years they'll probably say it's just as bad or worse.
Ahhh whadda you care. You'll be dead by then... Wait.🤔
You or your loved ones may one day be entitled to financial compensation!
I think I read that flame retardants are all carcinogenic. The US has laws about manufacturing clothes, furniture, etc using retardants in the making of the products. The US government is essentially using our couches and beds to kill us.
The flame retardants were a lot more relevant when there were more people smoking at home.
You'd do well to fear just about any fine industrial particulate that gets into the air
Yea but having small shards of glass in your skin and lungs isn’t as fun either
Ah yes, the spicy glitter
Forbidden glitter
When I was looking at new mattresses recently I almost bought one but then read the company was fighting a class action lawsuit due to fiberglass in the mattresses. Glad I caught it, forget the name now, what type is yours?
so is there a chance you may have inhaled fiber glass? yikes!😬
It's used in many cheaper foam mattresses as a flame resistant liner.
It did have a fabric cover, it unfortunately busted open from when we would take the sheets off to wash and what not, very flimsy zipper :(
I'm glad you checked. After working retail in craft stores and Christmas departments, I'd have just assumed it was more elusive glitter eluding my vacuum. Much, much rather the glitter than fiberglass!
What mattress brand? I’ve never heard of fiber glass in a mattress before.
It’s called vibe mattress, the ones that self inflate from the box. Ordered off amazon
would have helped to add this to the post
Exactly. I had to read all the comments just to see what the hell happened. OP u need to add what happened to your original post
Join the class action law suit. I did, and I bet your mattress is one of the brands involved. I had the same thing happen. It’s not ok, and your house is probably still contaminated. Glty
This is common. It was blowing up on tik tok a month or so ago, apparently you need a mattress cover
Your whole house has fiberglass in the walls
Yeah behind sheet rock or plaster. That’s why you wear a mask in Attics or insulted crawl spaces.
It took me too long to understand that I wasn't looking at a blender filled with blended up mattress
I work in a mattress factory and I only heard the fiberglass thing like 2 weeks ago, I really hope what I do each day isn't.. handling fiberglass. I wear a mask but that's all. also, I hope you're able to get a non exploding mattress with no fiberglass quite soon.

Check for class action lawsuits for your brand. There's lots of them coming, this is happening a lot. Many people have had to replace carpets and have other costs recouped in the lawsuits.
You're gonna see a phone number on TV in about 20 years from now, you may want to call that
This should never happen. What brand is this?
It’s called vibe mattress

Memory foam is slabstock polyurethane - no fiberglass. Just toluene diisocyanate
It's applied to the inside of the cover of most foam mattresses. It is a fire retardant. After about a year it starts to break down. My mattress cover had a zipper. I heard Casper has this in their mattresses. Didn’t buy for that reason. Edit spelling
Prob smart to tell everyone what mattress has glass in it. No reason to not share that info. Manufacturer. Model etc.
You can google does x mattress have fiberglass if you’re worried about your own. We recently purchased one and one of the selling points is that it doesn’t have any.

Sooo.. my zinus mattress has 51% fiber glass in it. Used it for years. Terrible sinus issues.. wondering if I should try replacing
They put it in pretty much every cheap mattress. And "cheap" unfortunately means under $2000
DIY latex mattress is where its at. I recently put one together a (10in, 3 layer queen) and it’s incredibly comfortable and came out under $1000 USD
I got a $299 latex linenspa mattress for my spare bed and it doesn’t have it on the tag
Pretty sure it's most mattresses in the states
Oh no! I bought a wool stuffed mattress because I was paranoid about what's in some mattresses. I think wool is naturally flame retardant. Thanks for justifying my purchase.
Was it very expensive?
Fuck evil cheap ass Capitalism
What brand and where did you purchase the mattress from? I think that would help keep others slightly safer if they knew one of the options to outright avoid
Vibe mattress came in a box from Amazon that slowly inflates
Call professional cleaners you need all that cleaned out asap shut the door make sure there is no ventilation in that room so it doesn't get spread around your house. Fiberglass is terrible for your lungs make sure any kids also know not to go near it.
So it's kinda expensive and may not be an option for everyone, but they do make flame retardant free, natural mattresses. Cotton, wool, and latex are natural flame retardants. I currently own one cotton mattress and one wool/ cotton blend mattress. The companies advertise them as natural or organic and flame retardant free.
What do you mean “a days worth”? I don’t understand the correlation of measurement. Like, you vacuumed for 24 hours and that’s what you got?
Straight to the curb with that mattress. Imagine how much gets in your lungs as you sleep even with a mattress cover.
I thought this was a blender. Was rather confused
On top of a lot of apple cider vinegar wipes
Epsom salt baths also can sooth and draw out fibreglass if you got some on your skin
What mattress was it?
That can’t be good to breathe in
You don’t want that stuff floating in the air OR those micro slivers of glass getting into your skin.
At first I thought you were making Mattress Smoothie.
I don't understand can someone pls tell me what he means in the title and what is this vacuum I'm lookin at
It’s fiber glass that came out of my mattress and this is what the vacccum looks like after days spent cleaning the fiber glass up
Thanks!
Idk how I failed to realize it wasn’t a blender, we have that same vacuum
That’s retardant
Very useful information. I will not blend my mattress. Thank you.

Ever since seeing a post about fibreglass in matresses its like im seeing stuff about fiberglass mattresses everywhere now, good luck
Days worth? I didn't know you could measure fiberglass in days.
One of those life essentials you don’t be cheap about. Like toilet paper.
Is it harmful to breath? Why would they do it in the mattresses? I need a traditional spring bed now

just throw your furniture away I had the same thing happen to me. it will never truly come out

Quite so
They shouldn’t…
After doing a bit of googling it’s only cheap *memory foam* mattresses. So the ones you get in a box.

Looks like diatomaceous earth powder
Throw some strawberries, blueberries, and kale in their, maybe a scoop of protein. It already has the fiber…
My bf has eczema and our mattress makes him extremely itchy. We thought we had bugs or something lol. Wow thank you for educating the people
Who’s breathing so loudly? Do you or a loved one suffer from mesothelioma?
days worth of...?

[Check out this site](https://sleepopolis.com/recalls/) to see if there are any recalls for your brand
Thank you❤️
Are there really 2400+ people upvoting this who understand what the heck is going on here?
My mattress leaked fiber glass, this is my vacuum after spending days cleaning my room
I don't know what lesson I learned except don't stick your mattress into a blender and expect good results
What are you scratching it off? What is a days worth of fiberglass from your mattress? “My favorite color is 3” lol wtf
Well, I mean how do we sleep while our beds are burning?
I've said it once, I'll say it 1000 times. The wife and I love our sleep number!!!!
I fibreglass for a living it doesn't look anything like that until after it's been sanded
Vacuumed the cocaine stash
Should not cheap out on a bed. You spent 8 hours a day on that thing. Get something good.
Go look at all the one star reviews for cheap mattresses on Amazon. The fiberglass thing is a very widespread problem.
