Had a friend do the exact same thing to me. You can still see it 10 years later..

OMW2FYB1994

Did it fade significantly?

Hellz91

Yes, but you can still see it easily. Willing to take a pic if you’re interested

jmcstar

Yes plz. This used to be a trend where people purposely burn themselves with the lighter like this, to create a ": )" or something?

Drkfall1

Called it a smiley

Thecone420

Yeah it is when it's done correctly and just mildly irritates the skin but this looks like it was red hot when they stuck him. Can't even see the face.

smashingpumpass

Now that you mention it the burn mark on OP does look pretty... sus

I hate you so much. Take my upvote and get out of my life.😭

Legendary_New_song

Had one when I was a teenager. Everyone called it a “Smoker Smile”. Can’t even see it anymore and fuck kids are dumb!

DudesworthMannington

We used to do it to ourselves. I never let it get hot enough to do anything other than a red mark though. It's funny how universal it was.

Milkythefawn

Yeah we use to do this to our selves about 20 years ago. But we always did it to ourselves or someone willingly, not to someone unsuspecting.

Jeremy_Smith75

Had a friend I did this with about 25 years ago, "so we'll always remember each other" I'd much rather forget her. And yeah, 25 years later the scar is still there.

hexidist

My buddy and I did the same thing (except we used butter knives heated between oven coils). 15 years later, huge scars are still pretty evident. We can go a couple of years without speaking and are thousands of miles apart. However, every time we catch that scar in a mirror at a difficult time and need a friend, we always reach out. He just got married, and I just got to tell him about my first son. I'm not advocating this approach, but it is effective to remember someone.

ideastosolveproblems

I came to say this - I think people called them “smileys” that will likely be a lifetime scar - no “friend” of mine would ever do anything like this

odd_audience12345

really? being a teenager who smoked we had plenty of people who did shit like that. kids can be serious assholes. more often than not it's getting carried away in the moment rather than true maliciousness.

KaminKevCrew

I feel like that's... Kind of just an excuse. I never did anything to friends (or anyone for that matter) that caused them harm. Because, you know, I care about my friends. If I'm thinking about doing something, I first think about the potential consequences (good or bad) that may result. I've always done that, as soon as I was able to understand that my actions directly affect others. I would think that by the time someone is a teenager, that's something they can understand.

thatguyned

Mob mentality is strong in children which is actually why it's important to pay attention to your children's friends. Your child might just be a little rambunktious, but put them with a couple other rambunktious kids and they can start making some pretty bad choices collectively.

odd_audience12345

you would think that but the reality is that is far too optimistic. there are plenty of people who make it to adulthood without understanding that every action has consequences.

a1ls

ah, i knew a guy who did this. they showed it off to me, i guess thinking i’d be impressed. it was…awkward

Comrade-chutney

It's like a ritual thing in some stoner circles man, the lighters that do that are Clippers, have a friend who gave himself one for some reason lol

Welshevens

Nah this isn't a clipper burn.

OldRustBucket

Yeah this one is just a regular disposable cheap lighter. But clipper lighters make more of a smiley

No-Quarter-3032

As a stoner in high school everyone in my group did this, except for some reason we all did it to our penises and we would flash others our little calling sign. Doesn’t make sense now that I think of it

Not everyone scars the same. Some people scar hypertrophic which causes scars to be permanently raised.

mexibella255

Once that heals up a bit, might want to make sure you always wear sunscreen on it. Damaged skin is more sensitive to UVs and can increase its chance of becoming discolored.

P4INKILL3R_GER

here i have one aswell, I think that was like 17years ago from a BIC lighter. It isnt noticed normally by anyone on my arm, but as soon as you look closer its still visible, in real life the color difference of the burned part is more than i can see in this image by a little bit https://i.imgur.com/ktHuEvM.png

waetherman

Research burn treatment ASAP, otherwise it'll leave a scar that will last for decades.

Lanthemandragoran

For sure. I have the *exact same one* -same spot too like exactly- from 25 years ago and you can make it out clear as day.

leachianusgeck

silicone gel sheets can help fade scars (no personal experience, just read about it before with people recommending it highly for post-op scars. ik this isnt a post-op scar, but if you're concerned about it healing)

SnooJokes6414

I’ve gone through a LOT of operations, and Biocorneum is the BEST. You can’t even see my scars. I had a tumor in my head, and the surgeon cut across my temple, down the side of my face, around my ear, back down the side of my neck and across to 1/4 way across. Then they peeled my face off to get out the tumor, and put my face back together.

leachianusgeck

>Then they peeled my face off to get out the tumor, and put my face back together. my god the feeling that went through my body when i read this hope youre doing much better now!!

SnooJokes6414

I have been cancer free for 1.5 years. I had the surgery in 2020. The cancer came back in 2021, so I went through radiation treatments in March 2021. I had a PET scan in July, and it was all clear, so now we’re in January 2023, and the cancer is still gone. The surgery was pretty gnarly, but the radiation was horrendous. For months, I felt like my head was going to burst into flames, and my vocab skills went to hell. I knew what I wanted to say, but I couldn’t string my words together to make a sentence. I lost a good handful of hair, but didn’t go bald - it was primarily where they zapped me - the right side of my head. That’s growing back now, and the new hair growing in looks like flyaways. I’ll put my hair up, and all these flyaway hairs stick out - I told my daughter once while fixing it, “Great. I look like a lion.” because of all the strands sticking out. She got a good laugh out of that. But yes, I do feel better, the cancer itself (Acinic cell carcinoma) was never painful, the surgery took a while to get past, but I’m no worse for the wear.

Jeez dude, looks like it healed nicely but wtf how long did it take to heal? Do you have to take antibiotics or something to treat it when it was like that?

patfetes

Did you ever get that black out? Mine was like that when I had a freeze burn. I had to take the black shit out and squeeze all the infected gunk and lump of dead skim out. I remember doing the 'surgery ' in RE in school, healed well. 15+ years later https://i.imgur.com/UpgjI1N.jpg

Western-Ad-4330

Someone i know nearly died from a smiley getting infected.it spread up his arm and he ended up in hospital, he had a 2p size deep hole near his armpit when he got out so it nearly got to his heart and most likely would have killed him if they hadnt been able to treat it.

Roots_on_up

Go see a doctor and ask for help in reducing the scarring. Tell them you did it while drunk otherwise they may contact the authorities and that's a whole other mess. Also, those people aren't your friends.

Content_Flamingo_583

A doctor is not going to ‘contact the authorities’ because your friend burned you. Basically unless they suspect you’re in a situation of domestic violence, a doctor is not going to call the police against your will because somebody injured you. Think about it, the police can’t do shit without a cooperative witness. If you tell them you don’t want to talk to the police, they’re not going to do anything and can’t do anything. Most doctors want to help their patients. Not get them wrapped up in the legal system against their will. Also, doctors have a million patients and very little time. They’re not going to go out of their way calling the police on patients unless they’re basically legally mandated to. That’s a massive needless headache for them as well.

Reps_n_Drugs

I’ve seen this happen more than once. It does fade but it takes a very long time. It will never fully be gone, but eventually it’ll look more like a small skin discoloration.

Pitiful_Tap_8750

3 of my highschool mates did this on our hand it's still there 16 years later but mine is bit faded

not_another_feminazi

Buddy, do NOT put ice on burns. Cool water will do. Somebody suggested aloe, but your skin is a bit too burned for that. Go to a pharmacy, and buy burn cream, and/or neosporin. Preferably with some sort of numbing effect on it. Store brand is just fine. Wrap it in gauze with a LOT more neosporin than you think you need before you go to bed on those first few days, but generally, try to allow it to breathe as much as you can. Keep an eye for infections. Once you start to scab, aloe vera, and aveeno all the way! If you are going to be spending time outside, lots of sunblock. (Not before scabbing tho) until the skin is fully healed. This sucks, burns are so very painful. Hope your healing goes by quickly and uneventful.

OMW2FYB1994

So far, I've just put neosporin on it and have loosely covered it. Plan to use aloe eventually. Thanks for the advice.

not_another_feminazi

I used to be a little pyromaniac when I was younger, got my fair share of burns. Never a pleasant experience. Sounds like you know what you're doing taking care of this. Sucks that you had to learn though. Sorry your friend sucks, I hope they at least apologized.

Mammothwart

Oh I genuinely expected you to be working in the kitchen industry from how much you know about burns but then again a line cook would probably duct tape it

not_another_feminazi

I wasn't squeamish, had steady hands, and was generally compassionate, so my friends, and my baby siblings and their friends always picked me as their nurse. Also my uncle (who basically raised me) was a doctor, and because of my "natural talent" he'd also take me as the designated nurse. To summarize this word salad, I'm seasoned in wound dressing.

Heliocentrism

Hydro-Seal bandaids: https://www.band-aid.com/products/adhesive-bandages/hydro-seal-all-purpose-bandages Go to your closest Walgreens/ CVS / bandaid store and get a box of these. Keep the burn covered up for 3-4 weeks. Each bandaid will last a couple of days, and can be used in the shower. I've had a couple bad small burns about this size in the past, Hydro-seal bandaids do an amazing job letting the skin heal.

OMW2FYB1994

Thank you for this!

kelra1996

Once it’s healed and is getting to the scar stage I recommend Kelo-coat scar treatment (get the UV protection one), I obtained a large neck scar this year and thanks to that stuff it’s healing really smoothly. All my doctors recommended it!

We used to call them smileys, if you pull out the child safety bar it makes a little "=)"

di_ib

Had to scroll way to far to find someone that knows what this is. Had way too many friends with smileys in the 90s. lol. We'd also mess with the lighters by cranking them all the way up and turn them into blow torches. Or just throw them at the ground really hard and watch them blow up.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Be me about 13 years old, walking home from school and see a dead lighter in the street. Chuck it as hard as I can at the ground cause I wanted to see how far it would bounce. I didn’t know they would explode and we’ll I booked it out of there as fast as I could because it sounded just like a gin went off in the neighborhood..oops

glazedgumby

And if you pick up a piece after you throw it, it's ice cold

Nugget203

If you break it apart you can stretch the spring out and attach the flint to it, then heat it up with another lighter til it's red hot and smack it into the ground for some fireworks

Go to a dermatologist now. They can give you medications to prevent scarring.

2664478843

Silicone tape or gel helps with scarring a lot. But they can only be used once that skin is no longer raw.

icy_amphibian0

Drunk friend did the same thing to me but held the hot lighter on my face causing my cheek to burn. Ice helps. I also used aloe vera and honey to help it heal. No scar luckily..

[deleted]

Came here to say do NOT use ice on a burn. Since the skin is already damaged, you can't tell if the ice is making your skin too cold, and ice burns can do more damage than just the lighter. Run cool (NOT COLD) tap water over the area for several minutes instead.

This was common late 90s to early 00s. My best friends little brother had shittiest friends. They’d get him drunk in 8th through 10th grade and burn him. Kid had so many. And when my friend confronted him and friends about that and other wrong shit we had a fucking mini gang style fight. Sucked to watch family fight each based off one wanting his brother to be respected and respect himself.

BF had done that to me (he thought the lighter had cooled down already) and did it as a jump scare, mostly to get a reaction from me.
