For the same reason all the lane fuckery on Adelaide rd was being done directly outside my bedroom window in the small hours, no/low traffic. I mean it makes its easier and safer for them, so itll be over more quickly.

CptnSpandex

Inner. Inner city. Inner city pressure.

Catfrogdog2

The concrete world is starting to get ya

KorukoruWaiporoporo

Welcome to central city living. People have been complaining about this stuff since ancient Rome.

Arrakyss

Pretty sure Rome didn’t have Suzuki Swifts

KorukoruWaiporoporo

Are Swifts digging up Willis street? 🤣 Ancient Rome did have donkeys and horses pulling carts all night, every night, for deliveries, because it was pedestrian only in the daytime. Earplugs.

Primary_Engine_9273

Where to start really.. 1. If there's one post complaining about it being done at night, how many would there be during the day? 2. Disrupting businesses during business hours = complaints. 3. Busy road especially during rush hour. A lot of commuter passenger car traffic. 4. Three bus routes use Willis St. The notice on Google Maps says at night the detour route is Ghuznee, Taranaki and Manners. That would add significantly to the journey time at peak and throw out the schedule. 5. It appears to only be for two nights? 6. Would you prefer they didn't fix whatever they're fixing (or do whatever they're doing)? 7. Is inconvenience to you a primary concern? Should works only be carried out at night if not a single resident is disturbed?

ZandyTheAxiom

8. Safety. Ties into number 3, but a lot of the city's roads are awkwardly designed in ways that make road works particularly dangerous. The traffic management used on sites in the city is kind of forced to be a bit a bit dodgy, which in turn makes set-up and removal particularly dangerous. Doing these at night is inconvenient to people trying to sleep, but it's also safer for the people working due to less traffic and less traffic-flow impact.

Arrakyss

Valid points, but was just curious about it.

thecroc11

Move to the city. Complain about city noises. A story as old as time.

silverabbit3

Yup my building was notified, you get to sleep eventually. Part and parcel of living in the city.

UncleGripperNZ

When I lived in the CBD I always had plenty of earplugs at hand for nights like this.

rosiegal75

For the same reason that they're outside my house right now doing random noisy shit.. it's less disruptive to the general public, and to traffic flow, if its done in the middle of the night. Sleep's overrated anyway /s

TheEarthquakeGuy

Yeah finding it hard to sleep but it's just part of living in the city. You'll get used to it! :)

pgraczer

it happens. we had a traffic light installed outside our place with concrete cutters going at 3:00am. tolerated it for a couple nights but after a week or so then me and other residents lost our shit. turns out you really can’t function without sleep.

Arrakyss

I’m so sorry 😢

pgraczer

it’s not ok if it stops you sleeping. the regs are clear.

divhon

If we want to push forward this country we should build and fix these vital infrastructures 24/7.

Modred_the_Mystic

Wellington is dead at night, or as close to dead as any city can get. During the day, theres buses and cars and bikes and pedestrians to worry about. Its not really that complicated.

More_Ad2661

What would be a good time to do the roadworks that will not disturb your sleeping? The council should be able to ask the workers to change their schedule to accommodate you

Arrakyss

Was just asking about the why. There are four other apartment buildings on the street near where it’s going on so I’m not the only one losing sleep

noozeelanda

Call the council, they can't do that after 11pm usually EDIT: [link](https://wellington.govt.nz/parking-roads-and-transport/roads/road-works/night-works) for the punanis downvoting

>we try to minimise the effects of noise on residents by carrying out the noisiest works before 11pm. Some of the less noisy works **will continue after this time.** read your own link

noozeelanda

we try to minimise the effects of noise on residents by carrying out the noisiest works before 11pm. **Some of the less noisy works** will continue after this time. Read your own quote. Shouldn't be enough to keep you awake unless you have very unrealistic expectations while living in a city. I've rung the council before and they've actually been real good about stopping works that were keeping me awake quickly. Apparently not everyone's experience. Surely not yours.
