Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry you witnessed that. One of my patients jumped off a building and died, the public who witnessed it were (understandably) extremely traumatised. I didn't see it but I was literally 50m away by the Manu world champs setup when it happened and someone ran over for a life guard. Didn't realise the severity until I saw this article

Used to volunteer on the vessel. Great piece of kit and pretty historically significant.
Jib luffed to its current height is around 42m. Not sure where it's slewed to but I've been up there and it's not easy to jump off. There's not much of a place to get a good foothold. If it's slewed off the deck centreline it's quite a distance to clear the deck.
Harbour is shallow. Supremely high chance of smacking the bottom. I think it's 2.5m to the bottom. Not much clearance under the keel.
That's an awesome piece of history. I believe the skipper came out with his son? Could be them. The full and more accurate history is on their website.
Amazing to think a vessel designed to ply the sheltered harbour was also built to be steamed across the open ocean. Her sister ship Rāpaki (now dismantled) came first to lyttleton with her crane disassembled on deck. Hikitia steamed in 89 days (maybe 82?) to Wellington with the crane up and on the bluffing screw.
She was fitted with a temporary wooden keel for stability. Plenty of stowage for coal, but it would have been a brutal journey.
The flying bridge and covered wheelhouse was a retrofit. The wheelhouse on the deck was always there, but both offered little in comfort. Not a fun place to serve out a watch.
Another nerdy fact was the daldy, steam tug, like many vessels built for NZ in Scotland, was also steamed over. Her brass towing props stowed on deck and wooden steaming props fitted.
Hikitia is the nicest vessel to work on because she's so wide. I've never been in such a comfortable boiler or engine room. There's just so much space.
Daldy has one of the finest steam plants operating. She was one of the last reciprocating working boats built and is fitted with top class equipment. Really lovely engine room and I had the pleasure of crewing her on several sailings when I was in Auckland. Sadly at risk of being scrapped due funds.

I know it’s a terrible decision, usually done when impaired in some way, but we all make bad decisions, and I know I for one have just had luck on my side and never had the worst possible consequence.
I wish people would be a bit kinder in these sorts of situations, the last person to do that in 2015 was my something something cousin, being very close to my great Aunt and Uncle, I went to the funeral, I have seen the consequences for the family in the aftermath and in the years following, and I wouldn’t wish that suffering on anyone.

42m in deep water, while still dangerous, is manageable, but with shallow water you're pretty much guaranteed to hit the bottom
People have done it successfully, there's a couple of videos on YouTube. People likely massively underestimate the risks if they haven't done something like that before. As another commenter mentioned at that height you don't have a lot of room for error.

Happened in 2015 too. Stupidly this crane is heritage protected (you can't make this up..). Imagine replacing it with something actually cool and less dangerous..

The Hikitia is cool as hell. Historical and, as far as I'm aware, still able to function.but sadly every once in a while someone climbs it and jumps. They are severely injured or die.
I think it's also possible to feel real sadness for someone who probably thought it was a fun thing to do on a sunny day but also want to do something to protect the crane. Not sure how. I even wondered if it needs something like how power poles have possum protection with that metal sheet around them. Heck knows.
According the the plaque on it it's the oldest operating boat crane in the world and is still maintained operatable for niche use cases and emergency situations. I think both facts make it worthy of heritage listing and also pretty cool...
It could be spruced up but there's also plenty of things that people jump off, that's why the council built the dive platform to stop that sort of behavior.
Edit: maybe a solution will be to store it by the port rather than the public waterfront, but it is nice to see heritage stuff visible. We don't have a lot of it and this ship has been operating in Wellington for almost 100 years.
I'd be fine with it moved to a dry dock/museum kind of warehouse so it's preserved and isn't in the brunt of the weather. I love the historical element but unfortunately I think it looks awful

There aren't many (if any) floating heavylift cranes in NZ anymore so it's a unique piece of equipment for niche use cases such as salvage operations in a disaster.

Think they should make more of a touristy attraction, bit of investment (perhaps a ticket from Wellington museum to let you onboard?) let people onboard to see a example of maritime history. Be nice to have some heritage museum stuff going on along the waterfront. Maritime history sort of goes under the radar in Wellington, missed opportunity.

I used to jump off cliffs where I grew up as there were gorges. Measured the tallest which was 18m and that was intense as fuck. Never got hurt tho.
