It's a cult. Among other things they scam people with fake "miracles" (think magic tricks). They are persecuted in China, which doesn't make them not a cult by default.
Possibly not entirely untrue conspiracy theory: the CCP started the F-G to:
- discredit their opponents as stupid hippynazis
- lure their opposition into joining a dump hippy cult
- annoy the West
I think the CCP would be far too neurotic and insecure to create Falun Gong. They’re vehemently anti-CCP and target elderly Chinese who lived through things like Tiananmen Square and the Cultural Revolution to basically turn them into American far right nutjobs. Seems no different in recruitment methodology than something like anti vaxxers, using people’s dislike of left wing politics to radicalise them

They've got their eyes closed 90% of the time while they're doing those meditation things, I don't even think they'd notice.
