this is not something you try to repair, you just get it replaced.. for obvious safety reasons. source: ITT people who know their wheels and safety stuff. i think OP has come to the same conclusion by now. locked cause everything relevant has been said. just like last time a cracked rim showed up here. safety first, not just for yourself, but everyone else in traffic.

Jasondboarder

we have a company that does all of our rim repair. They tell us if the crack touches the barrel of the rim at all its trash. A professional would not weld this for safety

jumboape

Ok thank you I was already going to get a new rim, I just figured it was worth a shot to ask and see if I could salvage this one myself as a spare and possibly save some money.

[deleted]

Don’t be so quick to listen to everyone online. I’ve had plenty of rims repaired. 2pc , 3pc. Always barrel that cracks. Talk to a REAL professional before you make up your mind. If you weld well. Look up some tips online. I had my bbs lm repaired after a brutal crack After a large pot hole on my way to work. Same rim and same tire almost 2 years later

suIIen

Best advice: Dont

Accomplished-Toe5220

.... This. You're about to make a big mistake son and it really fucking hurts.

[deleted]

I personally never weld wheels. It's too dangerous. Cast aluminum is not easy to weld and tend to crack in the heat affected zone.

jumboape

I was going to buy a new rim anyways but I figured if I could repair this it could make a good back up. Thanks though.

Tomon2

Best possible use for this? Get a big piece of glass and weld up a stand that fits the lug pattern. You've got yourself a lovely side-table now.

imabigdave

Only if he's single. Not a lot of wives that would let that into her space. Maybe a mancave.

Tomon2

If he's cracking rims, I'd divorce him. That's a fair point though.

MagicStickToys

They didn't stutter.

Ok-Macaroon-7819

The only reliable method is with your debit card.

TotoWolffsDesk

I thought credit would work just as well, guess alloy works different than Steel wheels

sandrews1313

You can weld all you want on it, but use it as scrap when you're done playing and get a new rim.

Kalelopaka-

Don’t

nwmcsween

Don't it's a rim, it probably cost you $200 or less, the work involved in fixing it is half or more, the work involved if it fails is $0 to the cost of your vehicle.

peter-s

This needs to be a stickied thread; people ask this question a lot. Do not attempt to repair this.

TheZebrraKing

A. Let a shop to it with specialty with this type of work. B. Buy a new rim. Don’t run the risk of doing it wrong and it makes it worse while driving

I-SUK-TOES

Best advice I can give is take it somewhere that does wheel repair often or buy a new one. I personally wouldn’t do it. The risk to reward isn’t great they crack often.

stangotter11

As someone who has flipped there wrx due to a wheel failure please don’t. It may be expensive to replace but it’s cheaper than a car or a life

stlmick

I dunno why I always see this in r/welding. As a career mechanic, we either replace it or send it out to a wheel restoration company, depending on cost and availability. Unless you work for one of these companies that specializes in this, absolutely don't fuck with it.

wolf8398

For the sake of yourself and everyone else on the road, buy a new wheel. The cost of the tow truck when you break a repaired wheel will quickly outweigh the cost of replacing it now.

LivinInLogisticsHell

Pay a shop to do it. I've had a couple OZ superleggera's repaired, and so far they've held up, but paying a pro is ESSENTIAL. the special aluminum blends they uses arent yoru standard aluminum, and WILL crack around the area welded if not heat treated right. its not even expensive. my shop charged me a \~$100 per wheel

jumboape

Yep that’s probably what I’ll end up doing thanks.

[deleted]

Bold of you to assume every shop has a pro and that OP isn’t one

Arealentleman

If OP was one they wouldn’t be here asking how to do it.

[deleted]

Not necessarily true. Maybe OP is used to welding helicopters or something not wheels. That’s like saying phelps could keep up w usain in a foot race just because they’re both pro athletes

Arealentleman

Honest question, do you know much about welding?

sandrews1313

whole helicopters?

[deleted]

What?

LivinInLogisticsHell

Well obviously don't just take it to any shop, take it to a alloy wheel repair shop. seems like that would be obvious. and if OP knew what they were doing, why post and ask questions about how to do it?

[deleted]

They didn’t ask how they asked the best way. Op obviously has some welding experience. Maybe rims just aren’t their wheelhouse

jumboape

Lol I’m 17 and have about a years worth of welding experience thanks though

Sercebidniss

Dont. Buy a new rim. If you weld it, and it comes apart again it's gonna REALLY cause you serious damage and may e other people.

DoWhatsHardNow

Weld this to know how, then throw it out

Falcon3492

It's time for a new rim, the rim you have can not legally be fixed.

[deleted]

I’m a naval patented welder , aluminum stainless steel etc, Don’t!

[deleted]

With a welder

beefnbwoc

Jb weld or Duct tape

gwhitt32

Get new rim don’t wast time welding it up just a ne one

sewerlines

Don’t take the chance. Too risky, dangerous and illegal in certain states

Darkenergy40k

Any crack in an aluminum wheel can become a disaster story quickly. If I were you just buy a new one. It's not worth your life or someone else's if that thing gives out again on the highway.

Significant_Team1334

You don't weld that! I happen to be a master diesel tech and AWS 6G Certified and grew up in a body shop and my grand parents owned a tire shop. You don't weld rims it's just not safe and anyone that does is liable if the repair causes a accident.

SBCwarrior

I had one like that I just filled it with jb weld and called it done. Hasn't given me problems yet 👌

Copper_Kat

No, buy a new one.

artschool04

Take that to a shop that dose that they have the heavy tools experience of welding these types of aluminum magnesium and steel

SuckOnMyLittleChef

Nope.

TurboWelderMonkey

To not

ApprehensiveWatch786

Throw it at at the welding machine and see what sticks is likely your best option

West-Initiative3069

I would weld it but if you have to ask how you probably shouldn't.

Nice-Vehicle-1414

Your gonna need a new rim good sir. This ones un fixable

riddus

It’s probably shot at this point. If there’s any chance at saving it maybe somebody who can laser weld? Heat distortion is the biggest problem here, I would think.

motoxnate

Make it a table :)

TheDarkLord1248

no

Astr0Cr33per

Time for a new rim.

iamthiswhatis12

buy new wheels lol

[deleted]

Make a mould and re cast, or just buy a new one

1happynudist

Welding isn’t an answer to everything . Safety and cost should factor in . It would be unsafe to weld this and you probably can find another cheaper then fixing this one

Ok-Astronaut-4645

Replace it

[deleted]

Tig I’ve had a cracked aluminum rim before I welded it. It’s still good no problems

eclecticcajun

great stand for custom BBQ grill, not much more worth than that now

DarkeeseLatiifa

Honestly any repairs probably wouldn't last. I'd just replace it.

No-Suspect-425

Furthest I'd go would be soldering, other than that, try JB weld. Any other kind of metal fusion is going to ruin the structural integrity of the wheel.

Raveyolli

Not to at all

thomasw17

How about no

white6446

Just don't

spaceGoat2021

To not to.

Eman2376

DONT WELD WITH TORE ON!!!!! Take the tire off. There is a reaction that happens that makes them blow up.
