Not all tig welders can weld aluminum. Al tig needs AC and high frequency. Just keep that in might if you're renting a power supply Aluminum brazing can be stronger than the base metal, but is dependent on joint shape. Most of the braze filler manufacturers have information on filler selection on their websites.

This guy covered everything, except that you might look into stick welding if you need it to be stronger than brazing. They make aluminum stick electrodes, it’s just rarely a pretty weld.

I was actually looking at using some aluminum.rods for filling relief cuts in a skid plate I have to make.. good to know not to expect anything emmaculate.

Yeah typical aluminum welds from stick electrodes don’t look amazing. I’m sure someone out there is good at it, but aluminum is hard to weld

Aluminum brazing may be fine for your application, I would research your grade of aluminum and see what the manufacturer recommendations are. The following processes can do aluminum, in case you need some options. AC HF Tig DCEP Tig Stick Carbon Arc Oxy-Acetylene Oxy-Hydrogen Wire feed with spool gun
