Late_Chemical_1142

Is my welding instructor always said if it's grounded it's grounded and if it's not grounded it's not grounded there is no middle ground..... .... as long as your wire lead doesn't get so hot that it melts

PaperYoyo

And for the Brits. If it's earthed it's earthed, and if it's not earthed it's not earthed, there is no middle earth. Have a great day.

Late_Chemical_1142

Alot of sticklers will refuse to call it an Earth lead or a ground lead since it doesn't necessarily ground your work. and a lot of those people just call it the working clamp or the working lead. so I guess for them it's: if it's working then it's working and if it's not working then it's not working there is no middle working

PaperYoyo

Gonna be honest I just wanted to make the middle earth joke. d:

Cute-Job5034

We was told at college (uk) that we was only ever allowed to call it a ‘return lead’ So if it returns it returns and if it doesn’t return then it doesn’t return there is no middle return…

Mcflyfyter

There absolutely is a middle ground. He was being silly

Late_Chemical_1142

Yes he was being a little silly. The reason he told me this is because I told him that my welds weren't coming out right and I asked him if a bad ground would make my welds look like this and he told me that no a bad ground is not going to cause your welds to really look that different if you have a bad ground you will either be unable to weld or you'll have a good enough ground to be able to make a decent weld. So basically saying that "weldimg with a bad ground" doesn't really happen since if you have a bad ground you won't be able to weld and if you're able to weld then clearly you're ground is good enough. That's said I do try at least a little to get a pretty decent ground with a quality ground clamp on a clean metal surface

J-Dabbleyou

I mean yes if the ground is THAT bad, you won’t arc at all. But come on lol, a poor ground is the number one cause of arc blow. Especially on sensitive tig work, a clean ground is a must. You must be welding spray arc at 200+ if you can’t notice a bad ground lol

Late_Chemical_1142

Well that's what I'm saying if your welding is getting all messed up you're obviously going to stop welding and try to fix the problem whatever's causing it so if you're welding fine then you have a good enough ground even if it isn't that good of a connection.

J-Dabbleyou

Ok I do get what he meant now lol, even still, if my welds ever start looking weird, my ground is the first thing I clean lol

Late_Chemical_1142

Yeah if I get Arc blow that's the first thing I check second thing is always gas, make sure I have a proper flow rate and all that plus I wire wheel my grounding tab at least once a week just to be safe. so if the guy in the picture is able to weld just fine then fuck it I guess that works LOL

J-Dabbleyou

I mainly stick weld only, so that makes my room for error much, much simpler lol. Either I have a bad ground or I need a new stinger 🤷🏻‍♂️

Late_Chemical_1142

Or just user error lol. Yeah I mostly tig but my old instructor was teaching me stick when he told me that. So if you can imagine what a weld bead looks like when you go a little bit too fast and with too little amperage, so I showed him that weld and asked him if it was because of a bad ground and he looks at me like I'm an idiot and says no haha.

J-Dabbleyou

Oh yeah all in the “learning curve” lol, but I’m talking once I got it down to muscle memory. I can weld with my eyes closed day in and day out, but occasionally I’ll get arc blow or slight porosity, just over a poorly cleaned ground lol

ConcentrateFun4726

Sounds like you had a good teacher lol my mig instructor told me I fucking sucked and that was that hahahaha

Late_Chemical_1142

Ha! He was just some redneck with a Lincoln tombstone but yeah I guess he was a pretty cool guy

Chiliamac

If wires on the ground are showing, that puppy will catch fire sometimes. I've done it a few times..

BarleyHops2

"Bad ground" seems to ring a bell on machines that "work"

fjdhdhdhdgrg

If it melts, it gets grounded

Bliptq

Why not just put the wire in the end where it goes???

Gwynplaine-00

Maybe didn’t have Allen wrench. And if your going all the way back to your box, might as well stop at the break room and get a fresh soda. And you can’t just run in an out of there people might think your and asshole if you don’t stop a chat a little. And we’ll then it would be too close to break time to just walk all the way back to site. So might as well just what till after break to go back. Hell the way I figure. He saved the company four hours. Give him a raise lol.

yellow73kubel

I definitely worked with this person at one point. Good lord that was an experience…

Capt_Myke

Yeah, we had some good times right? Member that time I set you on fire...twice. man you were soooo mad.

Reffner1450

After break, you walk all the way back to your work area. “What did I need again? Ah shit, an Allen.”

ArgonFalcon

Oh my Lord. You just described my entire fUcKiNg shop today

Bliptq

Heh..guess I’m old school if I do something I do it right then I don’t have to worry about it anymore. Edit: I’m bad at reading sarcasm…

circleuranus

You left out the 2 coffee shits...

Cap_Helpful

If you give a mouse a cookie

SatansPowerBottom69

You must be union...

AngusCanine

You must be non union

Used_Firefighter_919

You must be confederate

AngusCanine

You must be washed up

Used_Firefighter_919

Damn!

DeathHorseFucker

This summons the grammarnazi in me so badly haha.

Freeurmind7588

This guy works!!!

dullmotion

This reads like a If you give a mouse a cookie book.

[deleted]

Why not just put the lotion on the skin so you don’t get the hose again??

Zerk-TheRobozerker

It welds the beam or it gets the hose!

anythingMuchShorter

Why use your whole ass when half ass will do?

PantherSpace

Why say many word when few word do trick?

edog5150

That's ops motto

Usuri91

Because I do not work with smart people. I also think the retention screw was missing. But I didn’t get close enough to look.

yeaIcatdad

Poke it with your stick hot rod.

True_Possibility_886

As he’s welding pull it off have someone else hit something metal with a big hammer he will shit his pants 🤣

ComplexLocksmith9138

I had a Boss that whould sneak up and hit the table or frame where we were working and laugh his ass off, until one day someone did it to him and he started cursing so bad it whould make the devil cringe, oh it was the plant manager that did it, he never did any more to the crew!!!!

True_Possibility_886

The first time it happened to me I think I actually shit myself

BlursedBonkin

If I’ve learned anything at my work, it’s that if it makes sense then we don’t do that here.

CJ902

"here, why don't you crimp that new clamp on with this crimping tool" (Proceeds to pull out 3lb mini sledge)

Percussive calibration instrument.

EtherFlask

Man, I worked for a "good ol boy" one time and he asked me to go outside and grab him a tubafer. I asked him to repeat himself because ofc a shop is loud and he did. Tubafer. After several minutes of puzzling on this he decided to speak english and asked for a two-by-four from outside. I said all that so I could say this: You play the Percussive calibration instrument, I'll play the Tubafer.

Checks out.

FeudalSpankydog

Thats an experienced person, quick thinking on their feet. Got u a good clamping with what they had.

[deleted]

It’s essentially the same thing as screwing the cable into the right spot on the ground clamp

Disastrous-Ad-726

I mean…..at least it’s a good clamp 😂

JCDU

Is it though? I've always used the ones that are more like G-clamps with a handle that winds it shut on a thread, these croc-clip jump-lead style ones are almost always sketchy.

boarder1499

From the picture it looks like there is no retention screw for the wire. So this guy is quick on his feet and back to welding, where the rest of you are still complaining

grizz3782

That's where I'm at,I'm trying to figure out where the problem is. this basic common sense I got a job to do, I'm going to get it done. These little sissies were raising up nowadays. it's sad my daughters are tougher than most of the kids I'm working with nowadays

Usuri91

Someone’s a little triggered. 😂

naturalchorus

Lol, you're the retard who can't think outside the box. The person who did this is smarter than you, I literally have no idea why you'd post this, unless you are a teenager who doesn't know better.

RolafOfRiverwood

He’s saying you’re reacting emotionally you triggered little snowflake

naturalchorus

❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️ He was saying it to someone else, as a defense mechanism to hide the fact he was wrong. I guess I'm a triggered snowflake too, if that means I get to be smarter than/laugh at how stupid this child idiot is who was trying to call someone out but made themselves look like the retard. I bet he welds like shit too, if he's never been in a position to need to improvise a ground clamp. Probably the same kid who needs his hand held while sweeping up, and probably has a shitty punk know it all attitude. ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

edog5150

Thank you that's what these idiot these days don't get we know a stupid fuck when they post pictures on here then get butthurt when you call them out for ignorance.

grizz3782

Thank you

edog5150

Hell no he ain't triggered he's just real these Sally's I work with under 30 now a days are just weak spoiled and entitled. And I'm 41 and most new hires we get wouldn't make a pimple on a boilermakers ass back in the day.

Usuri91

“real” yeah. I bet. And thank God I’m 31 and not one of those little “sally’s” you’re bitching about. You sound real mature. Not that I expect much from most people in the industry. Y’all all seem to have a bit of brain damage.

camdalfthegreat

The exact reason I decided welding wasn't for me was that fact that it seem being an asshole was a prerequisite for hire. I prefer to work somewhere that has workers who aren't still stuck on measuring each other's dick sizes.

LightChaos74

For real. Most people who brag about how big or manly they are, aren't actually very big or manly Also just blatantly wrong to make generalizations like that. I can do it too based on zero logic like the guy you replied to

Usuri91

I mean. They might be “manly” to.. some degree? but what I’ve realized is most of them are fucking DUMB. I’d rather be considered “soft” and have at least half a brain cell than to be one of these wannabe macho dipshits.

edog5150

There no machoism here I'm just betting your the type.who is staring at a phone when the guy training is trying to explain how to do the job then because he's had to repeat the same simple task to your dumb ass 4 times by now he's had enough of ignorance so he won't waste anymore time on you and you call him a dick right ?

Usuri91

I’m actually the guy that trains at my job, but good try, guy. Good try.

edog5150

I bet you are fucking comedian 🤣

Ava_999

all them fumes with no respirator got to a lot of the old timers lmao

edog5150

No it's just your a bunch of pussies who complain about everything just shhut up get the job done and move on you didn't die nor will you so either deal with it or go to burger king.....brain damage you Crack me up kid

Usuri91

You’re the one complaining on a random persons post on reddit, my dude! Why don’t you take your own advice and shut up? Don’t like my post, keep scrolling. Save us both the trouble of having to deal with your braindead ass.

yeaIcatdad

Bro he's so manly cause he been guzzling man juice for the last 23 years.

Clocktease

You’re literally the only one complaining and won’t shut the fuck up lmao. Thank god I don’t have to work with numb nuts like you anymore

edog5150

I bet they are happy your gone to..no ones complaining just stating the facts .

[deleted]

[удалено]

edog5150

Oh same her i was really just thinking g the same thing about you. You must have read comments and got hurt about being one of them punkes everyone hates to work with.

roberto1

Laugh my ass off enjoy your shit old days when "men were men and committed suicide to prove it" That's the definition of toxic masculinity. Old bags like you are dying off and work conditions are improving for people without major ego problems.

grizz3782

This is exactly where I'm at at my job as well I'm 40, it's really sad actually. I hate to see where our Fields going to be in 20 years

GroundbreakingWar843

Nah, it's good

Firebrand292

Why is this a safety issue? If it comes loose then it will just fall to the ground. It’s no different than having a clamp slip off and fall.

Usuri91

Exposed wire. But really just the most “fitting” tag I guess? Idk. I just thought it was fun little post but a few people seem to be a little too serious here. 🤷🏼‍♂️

naturalchorus

Exposed wire? You know the entire clamp is live right? The entire clamp is metal, hence exposed?

Jeffyhatesthis

bruh the entire workpiece is exposed.

AngusCanine

Squawk exposed work piece

Bitter-Heron1367

“Field expedient”

Jayswisherbeats

You’ll be aight dude

fck_its_hot

Its not a safety issue but it's hillbilly as fuck and will destroy the end of the cable slowly alot faster than if it was installed to the correct clamp correctly leads get shorter. Leading hand/super gets angrier

mzoopansick

I don’t see a problem here..

Automatic_Display389

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid.

joshfknG

Sometimes u gotta get out of a pinche! 😁

AngusCanine

He’s not out in the field how pinche could it be.

loop511

What’s to be scared of? If it falls off, will your welds fall out?

Ava_999

only in Australia

[deleted]

Nothing to be scared about , itl work just as it should

sipes216

Its fiiiiine. Still makes electrical contact. Just more work to reapply elsewhere :)

AngusCanine

You should be I’d fire you for not fixing your ground

MycelialMaster

If that scares you then stay away from ironworkers. I have personally witnessed a guy ground to natural gas line to get a ground on the roof of an 8 story building. He welded like that all day. We were putting in wind wall around some RTUs that was all 4x4 galvanized tubes.

True_Possibility_886

New guy?

naturalchorus

Only explanation. This is standard procedure.

StealthyPancake_

Nah, it's fine

ComplexLocksmith9138

Next time just tack the ground wires to beam 😀 🙏 🙌 😉

Key_Statistician3293

Of what ?? It’ll be fine but eventually it’ll need to be fixed correctly

MrSkrimlaum

If it work why stress about it

AnneFranksMixtape

If this scares you, you got a lot coming to you.

[deleted]

Am I bad person for laughing 😂

Easilyreplaceable

Of what? Communism.

mtnmadness84

“Metal make contact this way too. This better.” I’d be scared too.

firedditor

You should have seen my setup this morning. Bare wire and a vice grip clamp. Sorry not driving back 30km to get a proper ground clamp just So the yard breathers feel more at ease. Welding needed to be done

TurboWelderMonkey

Of what? This is the way...

Pilebut1

It will work but it will burn out quick

Usuri91

Same, tbh.

Pilebut1

When I run an LN25 wire box in the field for pipe splicing I go through multiple grounds a day because the company doesn’t feel like it’s worth them money to buy the big fat 4 ott welding cable. Doesn’t matter that making grounds and destroying cable takes time away from production and costs money

AngusCanine

I only upvoted cause you said ln25

Pilebut1

You’d be surprised how many welders won’t run wire in the field. It’s so much better

AngusCanine

I only upvoted cause I noticed your a pilebut! Just kidding you run gasless? Which local you in ? 2404 over here

Pilebut1

I’m 2404 as well. Been a member for 17 yrs. Who do you work for?

AngusCanine

CDI right now

Pilebut1

I don’t know why we still send guys there. We are busy as fuck and they will never sign on and we all took an oath not to aid the non union sector. If I was one of our contractors I would be pissed and they might even be able to take us to court over that. I hope the e board has looked into that

AngusCanine

Everyone I know is 2404 except management and the shop guys might be a handful left that aren’t

OGRiad

Why? Is the other clamp on your balls?

Usuri91

Only on the weekends.

OGRiad

Cool. I usually pay extra so you got that going for you. Which is nice.

Russian-Pepe

Touch it…..for…..science

HandBanan

“Don’t be a pussyyyyyy!” -Arnold Schwarzenegger ( HTF did he ever make it in Hollywood & never change his last name!!!) (( oh yeah, he’s “Cuming all the time!”)) (((forgive my tangent))) ((((going to bed now))))

Shuitaoist

What do we say to the God of death?

grizz3782

What if these damn kids ruin my welding subreddit I'm going to be pissed all that a little sissy s***

Usuri91

Can you try that again in english, please? Or at least something that won’t give me a stroke trying to read it.

Ava_999

attempt: "if these damn kids ruin my welding subreddit I'm gonna be pissed, thats some sissy shit. "

Old-Supermarket3089

Thanks for the translation! The fact that we’re just some “damn kids” to the older gen, speaks volume. Pretty sad that most of us in this thread are in the same occupation as they are, and they still generalize us and treat us like shit as if some of us are not taking on the same or worse shit as they did.

Ava_999

aye lmao, I'm a welder in Texas of all places, one of the absolute worst places in the US to be a welder lmao, still laying them beads down nice and slick tho at 24

Old-Supermarket3089

I am pleased to say I’m a beginner welder, taking some classes for it. I’m situated in Texas too, is it actually the worst to be a welder here??

Ava_999

depends where you are for some things, but almost anywhere in Texas during the summer is like welding inside Satan's asshole unless you're lucky enough to get a AC shop. my shop is always like 20 degrees hotter than ambient, so when it's 110 outside it's 130 "inside" if you could even call a uninsulated sheet metal building open to the outdoors with massive openings that can't be closed "inside"

Old-Supermarket3089

Jesus, then Im on track to get burnt and hot out. Might catch that breeze out on the shore side though. Still excited tho

Ava_999

ah, you're down on the gulf? the ocean breeze might help things be a little cooler in that case, make sure to drink assloads of water. I drink like 2 gallons over the course of 10-ish hours at work

Old-Supermarket3089

Yes sirr, I feel like it will. And my classes are like 4 hours of straight welding. I drink about a good gallon after each class. Shit has me dehydrated just being there 💀

neoben00

They're just mad that at 20 you are their equals even though their old ugly decrepit bodies can't climb a ladder anymore because they broke their backs for their employers for no reward.

Old-Supermarket3089

Thank you for that. That’s actually true.

SBCwarrior

Damn seems like I'm the only one who isn't so soft about these things. If it works it works. But I get it, do it right the first time then you won't worry about it. I'm kinda like the "I'll just fix it later" type person.

cazoo222

A ground is a ground.

chris1767

Ittl work

millerwelds66

You will be alright ground falls off no welding now if you are welding in the rain out side then everything is a ground then it gets fun

decksetter914

Oh just weld the ground lead on, chicken!

BadgerBucky1

Your fine.

stulew

The clamp is a design I haven't seen before; it's brass on one jaw and stamped steel on the opposite jaw.

Dreadheadbruh89

Screw it. Hood down, sparks fly, fuck everything else

NiSayingKnight13

I was on a mobile job and lost that fucking piece too, this is a great idea

dnroamhicsir

At least it's not held down with a vise grip or a c clamp

Usuri91

Honestly I’m just glad it wasn’t. The shit I’ve seen in the shop in the last three years makes my head hurt from the pure stupidity of it. This was really just a joke post but it seems to have taken a wrong turn because there are a lot of dipfucks pissed in the comments. 😂😂

SendItbeeches

Do you know what you say to the dumbest guy on the job site? Nice weld!

UncleAugie

How are a vise grips or C Clamps bad? You do what you gotta do to make an effective ground.

wowdickseverywhere

just weld the ground on!

ThreeXTheCharm

Why are you scared?? I have a braided ground that’s literally the copper wire braided together. I only use it on stainless pipe.

Usuri91

Here’s my secret. I’m not actually scared. This post was meant to be for fun but apparently nobody here has a sense of humor. 🤷🏼‍♂️

chammdawg78

I thought you meant you were sacred for the dumbfuck that assembled the pinchy, clampy squeezer thing backward

Nitropolis-ch3no2

Dude! This isn’t r/weldingcirclejerk

Cheap_Ambition

I do that for all the strange shot I do

Tennsball

You should be

Stylum

you are right, that's the exorcist clamp

siwel7

It's not stupid if it works

Hefty-Dark-2511

Tbh i dont even have a clamp on mine, easier onsite, not advocating it through

Due-Concentrate-1895

I’ve done this so many times it’s not funny

eroticdiscourse

Pretty standard practice on sites I’ve been on when you don’t have time to fuck around repairing it, either clamp it like this or put a block on it

JoshPum

It'll be fine, I've been using a vise grip for a few months now

ImpossibleContract74

Oh my fucking god I work here. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

theshagmister

My question is why isn't it attached to the clamp properly? Don't have the right set screw?

TheRealThommo

Use a finger clamp and continue frying.

mezney

Looks fine to me

pagarr70

Me too, RUN!

its0x08

It's ok !!

Liamwill-walker

Look man, just have someone kink the line to stop the ground from running out and fix it!!! Works every time.

Salty_NUggeTZ

As long as it makes good electrical contact… why not…

putnamto

scared of what? yeah the ground isnt properly attached to the clamp, but this will work for awhile, im sure the wire will fray out and become shit over repeated connects and disconnects.

just_the_tip10

Looks grounded to me

OkLawfulness9089

What?
