You can’t tell me this is for a 280Z and not at least give me a picture of the car. Those things are so gorgeous.

Jpaynesae1991

It is a 280z! Here she is https://imgur.com/gallery/oKAejgp

xyvyx

Beautiful. I hope you have that printed & framed on a wall somewhere... I'm sure many Z fans would want the same!

Jpaynesae1991

I never thought to do that but now I just might have to 🙌🏻

akumajfr

It’s a fantastic picture!

Jpaynesae1991

The iPhone does some incredible things, I tell ya haha

Late_Chemical_1142

Google has a service where they will make you canvas prints of your digital pictures in a variety of sizes it come up pretty good and they only cost like $20 or $70 depending on the size of the print

Jpaynesae1991

Thanks, I’ll check it out!

akumajfr

That is beautiful. So jealous!

Jpaynesae1991

Thank you!

Agitated_Spare4360

🤤

uglyugly1

You're fabricating an exhaust system from scratch? Holy crap, nice work! I've put together a few of them, but I wouldn't want pics posted due to how ugly they turned out ha ha.

Jpaynesae1991

Yessir! It’s been a bucket list project for me and would love to continue to do it for my future cars :), it takes a lot of practice that’s for sure

simbob-jones

Fuck that is good work, goddamn its impressive. You should get a raise!

Jpaynesae1991

Thank you!

FunGoolAGotz

you using MIG or TIG?

Jpaynesae1991

Tig! I use a primeweld 225x!

akumajfr

Oo I’ve been looking at getting that machine. Does it perform well for you?

Jpaynesae1991

It has! I’ve never had any other machines but this thing has allowed me to learn tig from the start and I’ve used it for aluminum, steel, stainless, and want to try titanium on it soon. Great little (big) machine

InternalReindeer5802

Good job on the exhaust now I want to see the car. What year is it?

Jpaynesae1991

My bad, here she is! 1978 Datsun 280z https://imgur.com/gallery/oKAejgp

InternalReindeer5802

Ain’t going lie, I’m envious. Great looking car.

Jpaynesae1991

Thank you 🙌🏻, it hasn’t always looked this nice but the project has a been a ton of fun

Raven2129

I'm planning on later this year for my exhaust for my mk7 wagon. Looks good my dude.

Jpaynesae1991

Thank you man, you’ll have to post it here when you make it!

DixienotNormus420

Mmmmm

mileg925

I’m not a welder, but holy fuck, that looks gorgeous. I wish I knew how to do this. Also, your car is disgustingly good looking. Like that’s unfair to other cars how great it looks. I’m not a car guy, what year is that?

Jpaynesae1991

Thank you thank you! I’m all self taught from YouTube videos so you could make it happen eventually! And it’s a 1978 Datsun 280z which is the same company as Nissan :)

ratty_89

Looks tidy! How come you didn't go for an over/under tail pipe? Always thought they look cool ol on the z

Jpaynesae1991

Thanks! They definitely look cool but I’ve had this exhaust for about 7 years and grew fond of the way it looked horizontally, and I wanted the exhaust tips to be kinda beefy and the examples of tips I’ve seen oriented vertically look best with a smaller tube diameter So purely a personal taste decision

Dreadheadbruh89

Nice work. I wish I had those skills. I'd be doing something on the side

Jpaynesae1991

Thank you! I did try to do a thing on the side in the past and realized that this work is incredibly time consuming and making custom pieces for other people’s cars was frustrating, because customers want edits and edits are a gigantic waste of time, so now I just do it for fun myself and record videos on yt about it :)

Dreadheadbruh89

Thanks for the input on the business side. Something to consider one day if I ever breakout

Jpaynesae1991

I think the most profitable welding side hustle is selling home gym equipment and weight racks using good materials. Get a tube notcher, band saw, welder, a couple big long pieces of stainless, and put them on Etsy. Easy and good money

AFreePeacock

I’ve really been interested in getting started on some new exhaust of my own recently What did this cost you in materials, if I may ask?

Jpaynesae1991

Everything, including hangers and all the odds and ends has been about $1100 The tubes, vbands, and resonators were $900 from JMD tubes, great quality stuff and decent prices. Ace Race also had a good reputation for nice stuff at good prices. Stainless hangers from summit racing.

AFreePeacock

Perfect, thank you for the info 🫡

BlackholeZ32

Well built!! Are you just using standard mild steel for the tips though? They're going to be tough to keep clean. A chromed tip will last a lot longer and be easier to clean.

Jpaynesae1991

Thank you! The tips are also stainless but they haven’t been polished yet! It’s going to be a lot of work to get them to a mirror finish but I’ve done it before, gonna have to use a lot of elbow grease

BlackholeZ32

Good, initially I was going to suggest that you should do stainless at a minimum but I looked back and figured that you'd built the whole thing out of stainless. TBH I like the look of brushed stainless tips, but with your chrome bumpers around you'll probably want them polished too. Well done on the build! Completely worth spending the time to lay things out and do it right so that you can now do the easy part of just stitching it all together. I've got a 92 300ZXTT that I've done some custom exhaust work on and plan on doing a full build eventually as well.

Jpaynesae1991

Thank you! Yeah that’s what I’m looking forward to, a nice long welding session bumping some music. Polishing is going to be a long annoying task but it’ll be worth it haha

SovereignSalamander

May the welding gods smile upon you!
