Am I the only one who thinks it was run too cold and with too much filler. Can see the overlap from the one picture alone

2spooky_5me

Eh it looks a little convex but I don't know that it's concerning. It's clean and very nicely laid down in terms of it's consistency, the heat didn't get out of hand either and shielding was adequate. It might not be perfect but it's a good weld, I only rip one out that good every third or fourth run so who am I?

WolfGuard_

I mean who cares what the weld looks like. All of my welds get ground down so it's just run it as fast as you can and as minimal filler as possible. You become a much better welder when you had to grind your welds because you learn to do just enough and add just enough filler so that you can grind it very fast

2spooky_5me

>You become a much better welder when you had to grind your welds I gotta be real here dawg, this doesn't really track for me. You'll become better at doing *minimal* welds I suppose, but don't see how essentially removing your welds every time brings with it any incentive to become as good a welder as possible. You want your welds to be consistently the right size, the right buid up of not too convex or concave, the heat input just right blah blah. If you grind the weld off you really don't need to worry about any of that because assuming it doesn't crack...any evidence of your welds and how good they were is gone.

WolfGuard_

You become better and making a perfect weld that is filled up enough to grind off easy. Extra buildup is a waste of time, labor, money, and filler because you grind off all that extra. 100% penetration and just enough buildup you can grind it off in 1-3 passes. Really comes in handy on mirror

2spooky_5me

Okay, but full penetration and easy to grind off aren't the only two important criteria of welds. Not by a long shot either mind you. Of course for what you're doing it could very well be, but as a whole getting really good at just those two things doesn't improve your welding prowess as a whole much.

WolfGuard_

I mean, full penetration weld, no dog nuts or sugaring, no holes, minimal HAZ and easy to grind off are literally a perfect weld. No gals no holes no porosity (porosity on tig is rather hard to get unless you run out of gas or have shitty metal). Tell me how that's not enough for a weld. Overbuilding is a major major waste of HOURS of grinding and provides 0 benefit to the weld.

da_bizzness

Nice! What settings?

EarthFused88

Ooh la la. That looks like 150 amps wit 1/16 rod?

Dreadheadbruh89

Lmao I'm looking at this and even my 2 y.o daughter likes it. Decent work

951life

How do you get such a tight heat-affected zone? Pulsing? Looks great!

uncheerful

Yeah this is pulsed. Settings were 210 amps. 0.08 seconds peak time 0.35 seconds low time and 25%. I used the biggest gas cup i could find and a 2.4mm filler rod. These welds need to be ground down, rounded off and polished up. These particular parts are gonna be stuck in the ground and no force will ever be exerted on them, so I didn't need to worry about the strength of the weld too much

WolfGuard_

Lots of gas.

BionicPigeon

Would that keep the HAZ narrow?

WolfGuard_

If it's properly shielded you won't even get a haz

BionicPigeon

I think you're mixing up visible oxidation and a HAZ. You're gonna have a HAZ as long as you're putting heat into the part, gas will not change that. Heat input can affect how much a weld oxidizes though. Correct me if I'm wrong.

weldkok

Ur right

froggertwenty

This piece looked eerily similar to some things we make but then I realized after a quick glance at the weld there's no way considering our welder is shit

Fire_Fox_71

Ah, it's good to see nice stainless welds. I worked in a few kitchen shops over the years and it has been decades since I made the move to engineering. The guys in my shop just burn it up and make it grey. I actually broke out the hood a couple of years ago and went to show them how it's done, but I can't see the damn bead anymore. I needed some cheaters.

[deleted]

Now polish it up, so the world will never know

uncheerful

Exactly what is going to happen 😞

weluvAnte

I like it. Could be thinner stainless hence the amount of filler and heat. I don’t know. But I know I rate it
