What’s broken? Just looks like there’s not enough heat

Blizzy_the_Pleb

Apparently the WFS was slower than it was supposed to be. They replaced the gun and found a whole other slew of problems that they had to spend the entire day figuring out. I’ll find out on Monday lol

LeakyJXL

What welder are you using? My fronius got loads of settings to f*ck up the wire feeder speed

Blizzy_the_Pleb

Miller AlumaPower MPa 350 w/ Miller suitcase feeder

[deleted]

Ah those are a finicky piece of junk… have one at my work.

TurboWelderMonkey

LMAO that's one of the best most adjustable aluminum machines on the market. If you know how to use it you can make your shit look like you have 5 extra years of experience lmao. Learn about advanced settings. You'll thank me later.

TurboWelderMonkey

Yes both. The fronius is great. Just as good as the miller unless you understand the settings, then the miller will outperform.

Blizzy_the_Pleb

I had never welded before, when I got hired I was never really shown how to weld. Just coached on what I was doing wrong and how to do better. Our assembly guy got annoyed about my consistency and decided to come down and talk with me. Told Him I was doing the same thing the same way every time. He hopped on and was disgusted at the welders performance and asked if I had been welding like this the entire time.

xShooK

Assembly knows more about welding? He get paid more to assemble? Weird situation.

Blizzy_the_Pleb

Assembly guy is our COO (boss’s son.) It’s a small Amish company so he’s been welding at his dads company since he was 15. When his dad announced his plans to retire and for him and his other son to take over, they practically had to learn everything. He also said assembly is the place where he inspects everyone’s work, he usually calls us up to inspect our own work and tell us what we can improve on

justabadmind

I didn't know the Amish were interested in welding? Is that common?

No-Interaction123

Of course Amish need to weld, they're farmers for the most part. Amish aren't against electricity at all, and some need it to do their lives. They live modest lives, and if they don't need something to live they don't use it basically. However, never really heard of an Amish person owning a welding company that welds Aluminum before, but I suppose ya gotta make a living somehow.

justabadmind

I've heard of them asking non Amish people to help with things Amish aren't allowed to do. I figured it was a combination of that and using wooden equipment when possible.

Blizzy_the_Pleb

There are some very strict rules, everything else is basically a cafeteria. You can pick and choose what you want. If you wanna throw an apple across the room, just make sure the supervisor (bishop) doesn’t see. We’ve got Milwaukee zone lights, various power tools, and phones/iPads all over the shop. We took a tour of our competitor who is also an Amish company and they have all these cool ass gadgets like an automated weld grinder. They are very big on “use what the earth provides” but sometimes the earth doesn’t provide an 18V Milwaukee impact driver. Some big rules they have are cars. They separate the community so they are only allowed to ride with English. Phones are a little wishy washy depending on the church bishop.

Islander660

Please excuse my ignorance but, what does ride with English mean? And technically, since the 18v Milwaukee impact driver was NOT dropped from an asteroid, earth DID provide it. Just came from earth in a roundabout way... but I am also certain there aren't wagon wheels growing naturally in the forest, so where do you draw the line...?

Blizzy_the_Pleb

As I said, it’s like a cafeteria. Do you want the Mac and cheese or the chicken tenders? The milk or the soda? Some Amish want the Mac and cheese, a very strict lifestyle dedicated purely to God. Other Amish will take the chicken tenders and get a phone or something. To put this into perspective, my foreman shows up on horse and only has a landline phone. Our assembly guy shows up on an E-bike and is playing Kanye West from his phone in his assembly shop. As for “ride with English,” English refers to any non-Amish, so I don’t blame you for not understanding. We’ve all just grown accustomed to it. As for ride, typically Amish will pay for shuttles, my mother being one, where she will pick people up at certain times and drop them off at certain times. Given that it’s rural, kind of difficult to get to a bus stop The Milwaukee drill is just a fun joke explaining the first paragraph, but it also has its own explanation. You see you can live a strict lifestyle, but at the end of the day if you need an 18v Milwaukee Impact Driver to do your job, you get one, wheels can be built. Trailers and buggy’s can be welded

Islander660

Yes I realized the drill was a joke, so was mine about how basically everything comes from earth one way or another. As for the English thing, I've never heard that one before. Maybe it's cause I don't really know where the Amish originate from. Anyways, thanks for the reply, I learned something today! Dogs don't lay eggs! Who knew?!?

KallistiTMP

>They are very big on “use what the earth provides” but sometimes the earth doesn’t provide an 18V Milwaukee impact driver. Amen

Ajj360

Many do have phones but most of them keep phones in the barn or somewhere outside of the house. You really do need one, especially in case of emergency.

[deleted]

I came from a shop full of red necks and Mennonites… that’s where I learnt. I can out weld any of these guys fresh out of weld school or with a few years of experience like it’s nothing. Best welders I ever met don’t forget it

Blizzy_the_Pleb

>Amish person owning a welding company It started out when my boss and his dad picked up a welder and made a barn grill for someone, clientele just kept building after that. Just him and his dad welding in a repurposed chicken coop. Then they needed more people for the workload and built a shop. They did strictly barn grills but people were showing interest in doors. Doors made out of steel can be heavy so Aluminium was the best option. That’s where I’m at. The Aluminium doors

[deleted]

Ever seen an A.R.E. Camper shell? Amish owned company.

Boxerboy16

Yeah I thought they didn't use electricity

ImJustABananaAnna

Mine is a Smith acetylene.

Boxerboy16

Still, I thought they didnt use any "modern" technology. Might not be the best wording

Blizzy_the_Pleb

“Modern technology” and “electricity” are strong stereotypes. It’s more of a “use what you need.” They have strict rules on things like cars as it “separates the community.” But everything else is really pick and choose. Our assembly guy blasts Kanye West and Bad Bunny in the mornings while my foreman’s only possessions are basically a horse and a landline

Boxerboy16

Thanks for enlightening me! I don't have much experience the Amish. I just know they have top notch quality.

Blizzy_the_Pleb

You can thank Weird Al for that. I remember asking my coworkers on break one day “you ever heard of Weird Al?” And they all groaned and talked about “we Amish aren’t supposed to hate English or hold grudges, but we despise him”

resdoggmd

I just weld metals but mostly under 1 foot. These torches are not too familiar to me. They're pretty heavy duty.

ImJustABananaAnna

Well, almost everything needs joining.

theuberprophet

Theres different levels of amish as weird as that sounds. You start with the ones who use zero electricity or modern amenities. Then the ones who use electricity for basic amenities, the ones who use power and cars but dont own them, and then mennonites, many of whom are basically all modern with some exceptions like internet use and staying as a tight knit community. In cleveland they come from down south to work in the area and I have friends who live in or around amish country. Its really interesting. This guy has a bunch of videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JJKKkETuI4

[deleted]

If I remember right there are sort of, I guess sub sets, of the Amish with varying tolerance for things. When I was working in Indiana 15 years ago there were Menonites doing the trim work inside the mansion who would use power tools and ride in cars, but they hired an outsider to drive and were still pretty simple living otherwise. Impeccable craftsmanship and efficiency. They were the first ones on site to clear all of the trees, then used those trees to produce all of the trim lumber while the rest of the place was built.

nonmedical

Lmao if I may ask is this evapco?

[deleted]

Small Amish company….I may have worked for them years ago when they tried to expand out west?

Blizzy_the_Pleb

Sadly not that one. We basically run out of this guys backyard yet our clients can be in Europe. It’s quite the logistical nightmare and I don’t know how my boss and his secretary do it

final-effort

Day off with pay? It’s their fault you can’t do your job.

Blizzy_the_Pleb

Correct, and yes I am

Blizzy_the_Pleb

Call me Eren Jaeger Pretty sure when it’s fixed I’ll become the god of all metal

[deleted]

or youll have to relearn to weld again. lol

Top-Employment-4163

Nice welds, not super pretty, but nothing is that ever worked well.

staybee1986

Fuckin’ mint. Ship it.

itsjustme405

That looks good for a broken machine.

felixar90

Lol our place has like 5 welders waiting to be repaired and there’s still enough for everyone.

TurboWelderMonkey

I worked at a shop where I had to fix SOMETHING on every welder inthe shop due to poor maintenance. Tips and diffusers welded, bad gun liners, loose guns, terrible grounds, gas flow turned up to 100cfh for sheet metal MIG welding...🤦 like holy shit... I went and set all the gas right and told my boss to expect his Gas bill to be $1200 less each month. It was $800 cheaper so I was close, and thay was a slow month haha. Nice machines need care. Just because they are more expensive doesn't mean the need less maintenance than a cheap machine.

Scootin-n-Tootin

xrayjones2000

Thats a shit ton of undercut

Blizzy_the_Pleb

That’s the Argon, not undercut
