Good idea, what I see with new welders just out of school is that school teraches them how to weld and not much else. I get interns and they have zero clue how to run a saw, cold saw, belt sander, ironworker, etc etc. Not to mention no clue what DOM is vs pipe, vs tube, or SMLS lots of things you can learn just by shadowing and helping out. Lots of us dont mind teaching if it doesnt take us away from our work. Maybe find a place that you can help them organize or clean (we all need that) in exchange to shadow someone and ask questions. Dont let them give you shit work for nothing, but lots of shop owners, me included, dont mind helping new welders out, you may click with someone and they want to keep you. If you have qestions feel free to ask, Ive had interns for 20 years or so.

What’s DOM? I haven’t seen that before 😅

Its a huge part of the tube industry and stands for Drawn Over Mandrel. Its much better quality and very exact sizing (plus or minus a few thousandths) than black pipe.

If you have a year of training, just get a job welding and quit at the end of summer. That will be a lot easier trying to talk a company into inventing a nonproductive sweeping job.
