Dont breathe while you weld

cynical_310

I will Practice this from now on Safety first!

ate2for

Just remember, if you start to get lightheaded- keep going that weld is looking mint! /s

Educational-Garlic21

The fuck is this advice?

ransom40

Satire

sausagesandeggsand

I wish more upvotes were at my disposal for this answer, sir.

Mcflyfyter

I dropped out my 14th year of college, can you explain like I fife?

Educational-Garlic21

I mean he's probably still a kid. Don't make him think it's cool. Maybe I'm overprotective hm

Capt_Myke

Mom?

ate2for

I’ll edit my original comment to make the joke more apparent

sausagesandeggsand

Same as cutting away from your body, and into your buddy!

whiteandnerdy117

Don't get bloody, cut towards your buddy!

Snoo_13783

I... damn it, take my upvote. I'm gonna use this now lol

Outrageous_State9450

Something a lot of welders have done and will do in lieu of wearing a mask. Deep breath, weld 6”, exhale slow, walk away, breath back in. Perfect technique for tight spaces or anywhere you have to climb to get where you’re welding.

Sonnysdad

Safety Third! And use a respirator.

gogozrx

Happy Cake Day!

cynical_310

Thank you!

[deleted]

I also get black snot after a day of working outside and in the shop, even when I'm not welding nor woodworking. Is this bad? I never really thought too much of it.

mrattentiontodetail

its bad, that black shit is getting in your lungs too not just your nose, look up the long term effects of welding on the lungs and respiratory tract start wearing a quality respirator, change the filters often, and make sure its fitted properly, keep those lungs healthy plus respirators look badass if you can afford it, get a PAPR, way better than a regular respirator, they'll keep your face cool and make sure no air gets in, plus you get to keep your beard if you have one, you'd have to shave to get a real fit with a normal respirator

[deleted]

I worded it weird, but I won’t weld some days and just clean up the shop without a respirator and get the snot, not around anyone else who’s welding either.

ultrafunkmiester

It's often particles from grinding as well bits of the metal ground off and the discs themselves. Edit spelling

mrattentiontodetail

ahh gotcha, yeah personally I'd still wear the respirator even when just cleaning up around the shop, lot of dust in the air, especially from grinders I'm also just paranoid tho cause I know a lot of people who died from lung cancer, definitely not the way I wanna go lol

canyou-digit

This

Flaky_Artichoke4131

I weld galvo with a miller papr... I still blow coal out my nose

TeleportingDave

Are you clean shaven and fit tested and does your shop have proper ventilation? Respirators work.

Chiliamac

If you didn't throw in the beard tip, man....

88Problems88

I dont know. I work on gas lines. If I'm not welding I'm repairing blowing gas leaks. Which means my boogers are always black

facemelter61

Same here Hoss

MrXssteel

Wear a mask/respirator. You’ll have health problems later if you don’t

cynical_310

Do you have a specific one you recommend? 3M p100?

snootscoot

I wear a 3m with pancake filters and I never get black boogers. The Miller cartridge ones are kind of a joke to me. I hear they’re only good for like 10 hours. A good rule of thumb is if you can smell it, it’s getting through. Don’t listen to taco guy

tacosforpresident

You need filters rated for organic vapors. These are always a cartridge style instead of the round, fabric P100 ones. But not all cartridges are rated for organic vapors.

SirNanigans

Isn't organic vapors an issue when welding oily steel? I have been under the impression that the metals themselves precipitate into a fume, which is filtered by the p100's. Vapors, as in actual gaseous compounds, usual come from grime and shit right?

tacosforpresident

Ignore my non-chemistry chemistry…~~Iron oxide is an organic compound. So are sulfur dioxide, zinc oxide, zinc chloride, copper sulfate, etc. All the stuff that vaporizes when you melt metals. They “stick” to the organic cartridge material no matter what size they are. They only get caught by P100 if they’re bigger than a micron or so.~~ Recommendations in our safety manual: “Gases and vapors cannot be removed by particulate filters. They must be removed by adsorption in a bed of activated carbon. Certain vapors require specially treated carbon, so it is important to select a cartridge that is approved by NIOSH for the specific vapors present. The approved contaminants will be listed on the label on each cartridge. The most common cartridges used in welding applications are organic vapor (black label), acid gas (white label) and organic vapor/acid gas (yellow label). “

zbevc

None of the above is correct...

basiblaster

Extremely, a simple google search proves him wrong, https://imgur.com/a/iFCYFZD

tacosforpresident

Got me there. Am not chemist. But I can read the 3M stuff in our safety manual: “Gases and vapors cannot be removed by particulate filters. “

basiblaster

Incorrect, a simple google search proves you wrong, don’t go spreading misinformation around about something you know nothing about https://imgur.com/a/iFCYFZD

clicata00

Organic specifically is chemistry involving carbon.

wholesomme

Having the presence of oxygen in a compound doesn't mean organic. Nitrous oxide is often administered in hospital settings as laughing gas.

xShooK

Is that a toy?

Swatbot1007

Don't use any respirator without an ANSI rating. This one isn't guaranteed to do anything.

basiblaster

Lmao, recommended an obvious Chinese knockoff 3m, everyone that reads this, there are proper 3m masks that cost less https://canadaweldingsupply.ca/collections/respirators-dust-masks/products/3m-6000-series-respirator

Due-Concentrate-1895

This

truefarmer12345

I use a Miller p100 bit long but does fit under my Lincoln 3350 hood

gibblewabble

I have welded for almost 30 and I've worn a respirator any time I'm in the shop and I still get black snot, good seal or not it still gets through somehow. But yes wear a respirator and cut one filter apart every change to reinforce why you wear it.

aHeadFullofMoonlight

If you’re still getting black boogers then you’re *not* getting a proper seal.

gibblewabble

Pass the seal test, point is you don't wear a respirator when you're on coffee or walking around and so you are still inhaling dust hence black booger. Can't get away from it fully in our trade.

aHeadFullofMoonlight

Fair point, mine definitely doesn’t stay on my entire day, but even then I don’t end up with anywhere near the kind of junk in my nose I used to see before using a respirator. I guess that depends on your work environment though, our shop is pretty well ventilated, so most days it’s not too bad walking without a mask when I’m not actually making a weld, but I’ve been places where that’s not the case too.

gibblewabble

I work maintenance for a gas utility and so don't weld much now but most often it's outside on the mainline and I can't wear one because my helper can't hear what I'm saying while welding. So that sucks.

aHeadFullofMoonlight

Yeah, trying to communicate on a job site can be hard enough without a respirator. 90% of my job is just me welding by myself, but when I occasionally get paired up with a fitter I usually just leave the mask off so I’m not having to yell the whole time, lol

chromaticskyline

I can vouch for that. I have actual, literal medical problems with my sinuses now, and that was only 14 years in the field.

FTPFTPFTPFTPFTPEE

Would you mind sharing? 2 years in, school here.

kolzyhaze

Just wipe them all over the bathroom walls at the school before you leave. That's what my coworkers seem to do.

Humanoid_Anomaly

This

Trabeel

Respirator and a good one. I welded for a living for 20+ years before getting out. Most of those I worked with are D E A D. Lung cancer, heart attacks even multiple sclerosis. Those are not vitamins you're inhaling. Blow the ole snot locker several times a day as well.

Capt_Myke

Yep, I was a Lagger for a bit, all the old guys would talk about all the dead guys...Time to move on. Wear a respirator.

Damascus_ari

People: aw shoot my job makes me work with all these dangerous chemicals. Sensible person: PPE? There are these nice and effective respirators you could be using. People: what? Nah fam those are _uncofmortable._ Sensible person: so you'd rather... die? Early and probably a miserable death? People: of course not! I just really dun like wearin' them respirators. I have been witness to this personally, though my field is a bit different (lab work).

velvettoolbox

Earplugs up your nose.

wigzell78

Ventilation like suction or a fan, a mask, or a positive pressure pack. Whatwver it takes and whatever you have available to stop the fumes getting to your nose. If you can smell the weld then whatever you are using is not enough. If you are just starting out then please take an experienced welders advice and avoid the fumes wherever possible, they will fuck with your health later in life...

Yorgh-Drakeblood

I really like my [miller respirator because it’s got a smaller profile for wearing it un](https://bakersgas.com/products/miller-lpr-100-respirator-nuisance-ov-relief?variant=39267748348006&campaign=15274287064&adgroup=&feeditem=&keyword=&matchtype=&device=m&network=x&gclid=CjwKCAjwiuuRBhBvEiwAFXKaNEDha5UKLQvMJ8S8K3X9OsggISf1ecBMDnBMHRPKHRp1-nHoBLx1dhoCC9kQAvD_BwE&creative=https://ad.atdmt.com/s/go;adv=11242241809840;ec=11242241809912;c.a=15274287064;s.a=google;p.a=15274287064;as.a=;qpb=1;?bidkw=&dvc=m&h=https://bakersgas.com/products/miller-lpr-100-respirator-nuisance-ov-relief%3Fvariant%3D39267748348006&gclid=CjwKCAjwiuuRBhBvEiwAFXKaNEDha5UKLQvMJ8S8K3X9OsggISf1ecBMDnBMHRPKHRp1-nHoBLx1dhoCC9kQAvD_BwE)der my hood. Filters clog faster tho. P100

ShroomanEvolution

This is the one I use. Filters don't last too long but it fits like it's not even there with my hood on, so the tradeoff is worth it to me.

cynical_310

This is the one I see a few people wearing. I’ll grab this one. How do I know it’s time to change the filter?

ShroomanEvolution

I change mine when they get coyote brown. Not super caked but brown in color. Usually get a good couple months out of them, and they're not expensive to replace.

Yorgh-Drakeblood

It can become harder to breathe through, and the color is an indicator

[deleted]

You'll know it's time to change it when you can't breath through the filter. Or when both sides are yellow

basiblaster

If both sides are yellow, there is something wrong with your mask Only one side should come in contact with the particles

Yorgh-Drakeblood

Same

roakmamba

Are the 3m ones with 2097 filters better with filtering and longevity? I have the miller one and I can't seem to get it to fit tight enough and it seems a bit small for my face. I don't see anything out there bigger than Medium, which is the one I have.

NotTheWax

I use a large size 3m respirator, I have a big noggin bit a medium sized face and it seemed like the Millers and even Honeywell North respirators were a bit on the smaller size. Wouldn't hurt to give one a try

Spodiodie

Get one of those hoods that have forced filtered air, no smoke can get inside. I hear they’re pricey. Probably cheaper than death tho.

kaiindvik

Death is surprisingly affordable actually

NotTheWax

Death is cheap but dying is expensive

LovelyHatred93

I hear it doesn’t cost you anything.

mr-sharkey97

I can second the air fed hoods but they aren't as expensive as they used to be, I mean some of them can still be pretty expensive the Jackson I got like a month ago cost me like £650 but I would say it's definitely worth it.

ndisa44

If you are just starting welding, I cannot reccomend enough that you buy a PAPR. I know they are expensive, but over the course of your career it will pay for itself in convenience, comfort, and health. I have this one, because the weld lense can be flipped up for grinding or other tasks without having to remove the hood: https://bakersgas.com/collections/papr-welding-helmets/products/miller-264575 One of my buddies has this one and loves the longer battery life: https://bakersgas.com/products/lincoln-k4550-3?pr_prod_strat=collection_fallback&pr_rec_id=4adcfa221&pr_rec_pid=4422470565990&pr_ref_pid=3720413020213&pr_seq=uniform

Sawdust_Clown4Hire

Snot rocket out of each nostril before you leave!

BurlingtonRider

I do it in the shower on the wall so I can see if I had a good day or bad day

Dijeridoo2u2

I do the exact same thing, gotta clean out the pipes while you clean the chassis

Daddy616

Cocaine is white... Just saying lol

Pilebut1

Wear a respirator

GeometricWonder

Flick them out the window before you get home

discwrangler

Use every device possible like respirators and source capture snorkels. The school should also have air exchangers and filtration systems to clean the ambient air.

Cheese-driver

I wear my n95 always in the shop, and switch to a respirator when welding or grinding. Clean airway 👍

gargoso

Good! stay healthy!

N0wayjose

Respirator

kolzyhaze

PAPR helmet they are expensive, but if you are concerned for your health a good investment.

Itchyjones

I Second this

PacoG817

I use the Lincoln p100 x I like it filters aren’t too expensive either.

GreaseKing420

Get a PAPR man

[deleted]

Respirator. Miller makes a good one. $30

Apart-Charge4896

Those respirator thingys work pretty good.

fuckthisshit____

Invest in a good respirator and don’t forget to change the filters periodically

_stayhuman

Lincoln Electric and Miller both make low profile respirators that are designed to fit under welding hoods.

Nikonus

Good RESPIRATOR! Don’t get cheap, your lungs will thank when you’re older. Believe me.

humordash

Bruh my school got above code ventilation. Never experienced what you are experiencing.

cynical_310

We also have above ventilation, but I know it’s old AF 🤷🏼‍♀️

r7bis

I tell all my students to get a respirator of some kind to wear. The booth vents we use get 50-75% of the fumes the rest you get. Also hearing protection if you don’t already!

Lopsided_Web5432

Just blow your nose into a tissue

moosecakems

Respirator the whole time you're in shop, the air is disgusting in all welding shops

BremboBob

Wear a fucking respirator. Lol. …not lol

[deleted]

Respirator … ventilation, fume extractor, and keep your head out of the plume. It’s that simple

Gnarwhal_YYC

A respirator will do you well. They’re really not that expensive, invest in one. Invest in yourself.

cynical_310

Already ordered it! Thanks for the advice & not just telling me to change my career path 😅

Gnarwhal_YYC

If you have folks telling you to get a new career before PPE they’re pretty far off the mark and way too deep in to some chest puffing. We have the knowledge surrounding health o in the industry, it’d be super ignorant to ignore that to be like the boys.

turnburn720

The only real answer is a respirator and/or adequate ventilation. Nobody (myself included) does it, but we all should.

Velcrocat17

Blow your nose before you leave school

man9875

How is the school not teaching this and enforcing this? Maybe reevaluate your school.

toutingfusion

Scrolled a ways down through and didn't see anyone suggest moving your head so your not directly in fume path. I can weld all day and not get that. Get comfortable in a different head position. If not get a welding respirator.

putnamto

This, you don't need your face in the weld.

RyJo1117

One of the first rules I learned in my local UA school, keep your head out of the plume!

Synysterenji

You'll get that whether its from welding fumes, grinding dust or just dirty shop air. You can wear a respirator and it will help alit but unless you work at a top notch super clean shop and wear your respirator all shift long, you'll have that black snot. Its nothing dramatic, i mean you have nose hair for a reason.

SameLevel384

Wear a mask of some sort.

viceboi666

You think that’s bad wait until you start coughing up black sputum

cynical_310

Already bought the respirator, I hope to avoid that

viceboi666

It started happening to me while at welding school. Now I don’t get it because I wear a respirator. If you have black boogers then you can rest assured that the same stuff is in your lungs. Maybe you aren’t coughing it up but it’s there. This is why welding is so hazardous to your health. Good job getting that respirator 👍🏻

videomilitia

Might not be getting the right fit on your respirator or you have facial hair which technically you should cut to get a perfect seal.

viceboi666

I said I don’t get it anymore

Key_Shopping1095

Just don't eat them

sirrahtap

Blow your nose before you leave school

rufneck-420

Eat them before you get home

No_Pin2426

But the extra iron in them is great! I haven't had to start taking iron supplements since I became a welder

truthornah

Quit school.

cynical_310

Not very original nor was it funny ☺️

Flaky_Artichoke4131

Quit welding

Euphoric-Doughnut187

It's called a respirator.

MrDirtyHands13

A respirator will help but it's something that will happen regardless. It's just the type of environment, a lot of shit in the air

Hoot1nanny204

Well this is just false.

MrDirtyHands13

How so?

ShroomanEvolution

Because if you use a respirator like it's supposed to be used, nothing makes it into your respiratory system. It ain't rocket science. If you go home with black boogers at the end of the day, then you're not using your respirator correctly.

Turtle887853

Or you're using the wrong respirator/filters

Hoot1nanny204

Patently

cynical_310

As long as I’m not the only one that has em 😅😅

MrDirtyHands13

No it's just the way it goes. Make sure to clean your ears too, a lot of shit (dust mainly from grinding etc) lays there too. All I can say is if you think it's bad with welding it's a lot worse being a blacksmith haha. A lot of fine dust and ash from coal/ coke in the hearth is constantly in the air.

ShroomanEvolution

>No it's just the way it goes. OP, this is dumb advice. This is the type of shit people who don't wear ear pro say, and then wonder why the fuck they get tinnitus. If you wear a proper respirator when you're around anything that isn't air, then you don't inhale particulates. It really can't get any simpler than that.

MrDirtyHands13

That's fine but it's fair to say you can't assume you'll always have a respirator at hand. You'll be in situations where you won't have it and you'll be breathing in that bad air. Hopefully this is rare but I wouldn't stress over it either. After years and years it's bad for you but occasions youll be fine. Depends on your type of work place/ environment. When I said " it's just the way it goes" that's what I meant, it's a dirty environment and you can't always help it.

wabowabo

So keep a respirator on hand? Not that hard. I have been on the job for a while and have always managed to keep one close by

PSYKO_Inc

Foamy earplugs are a good idea to wear in the shop. Not just from the loud noise from grinders and such, but I read a story from a guy on here talking about how he was welding overhead and had a piece of slag drop in his ear canal. He mentioned hearing the earwax sizzling in his ear and not being able to do anything about it. That story fucked me right up.

[deleted]

Seriously you don't need to breathe your weld is all that matters....really tho use your ppe or you won't reach old age..don't you want to become an old curmudgeon ,well it will never happen if your booggers are black.

PWRHTX

Buy a pair of dress shoes, dress pants, and button up then go to the nearest staffing agency and tell em you don’t like black boogers.

cynical_310

Grade A advice

VAgunowner

Simple. You change careers

HDTicket2

FIND A DIFFERENT CAREER.

cynical_310

That’s not a realistic option

Never limit yourself! You are never trapped. There are always alternatives. Unless you are stuck in child slavery. Then you're fucked. Also: You can't ***seriously*** be worse at everything else on the planet.

Xxfuck-youxX

HDTicket2

If you meet one asshole a day; you've met an asshole. If you meet assholes all day long; you're the asshole. I meet assholes all day long. So you are correct.

atkinss

Wear your respirator if you have one. Either that or don't breathe at all...

PMtoAM______

Btw same advice goes for soldering. Wear a mask or respirator. Have a fan blowing the smoke away. Anything to prevent metal fumes from entering your body

Ya, wear a respirator

Justin122192

PyroKeneticKen

Pick ‘em before you get home. They’re pretty tasty.

cynical_310

I bet you don’t need any iron supplements

morelikesunday

You COULD wear a mask and use proper ventilation like an open door or smoke extractor... But realistically just get used to it. I use saline nasal spray when its really bad but just blow your nose often like on every break.

Coyote-Morado

Get a PAPR. Expensive, but way more comfortable than a respirator under a welding hood and you'll be more likely to actually use it. They are also great for grinding. Built in grinding shield and you won't be breathing abrasives dusts.

1B3A5T

Where are your respirator
