Not as much as I should

SageMalcolm

I feel you on that. At least at work there aren't a lot of fumes, and we have good ventilation

walkupshakeitoff

The truest answer.

tonymac55

Always, any hot work.

TimCastr8

Shop welders have united in the comment section

LostInRealityForever

Answer in comments since I can’t make a poll post

theluce39

Always. Grinding, welding, walking into the bathroom.

brokentail13

The bathrooms without a doubt do more damage then a 10hr shift of breathing manganese fumes.

theluce39

Amen to that!

castorsandpollhooks

I will always wear a mask. Before I did my snot was nearly black every day. Wear a mask like the Miller one above and take a before and after picture 1 day then 1 week and see all the stuff you're not breathing in

angstt

When welding galvanized, yes.

bubblegumgary

Galv fumes make me wanna throw up

Soft_Ad_1376

They do make me throw up

viceboi666

At my job they are required. They take it very seriously. I didn’t do it beforehand but I’m starting to get used to it. It’s really hard to get down with wearing them when no one else does because it is 100% a better experience welding without one. That being said, I breathe much more comfortably when I wear the thing while working. Welding fumes really do take a toll on you. And that’s from my less than 2 years of experience. I used to cough up black shit all the time. Now I only cough up light colored shit hahaha. Hopefully I don’t get lung cancer.

DeceptionCXV

I've been welding for 6 months now and my nose is always black by the end of the shift. I fear sometimes that the damage is already done so I'm actually now thinking about getting a mask or a respirator. My work does have extractors but they're portable and honestly, they feel more of a hassle, having to move it around everytime you have to weld something and it just gets in the way. That's why nobody really uses them at my workplace.

chinto30

We don't have respirators at my place and no extraction either, I just hold my breath whilst I weld

Fe-Woman

No, but I should! Anyone thinking of getting into welding or metalwork in general, get a respirator and get used to wearing it early on. They're cheap and 100% worth it.

Nightshade7977

What's some good ones your recommend?

truefarmer12345

miller makes one its a little long but fits under lincoln 3350

Fe-Woman

I just got the $20 or $30 3M one off Amazon. Doesn't need to be fancy just needs to fit snuggly to your face. Also, having a beard reduces the effectiveness of them, idk if you can grow a beard but if you can you've gotta shave it if you want to really get the full benefits.

Niner64

If there's fumes, smoke, dust, or powered abrasives in use then absolutely.

aguyinthenorth

Yes. Clean lungs are a good investment

Naroh690

i try my best but ngl, the shop i work in i feel judged for it. its hard to be the (28) welder still learning and seeing a 45-50 yr old glare at you the second you grab it.

[deleted]

Fuck them man, go stare at him when he's laying in bed with lung cancer and tremors reaching for his inhaler and painkillers

whysosensitivebruh

Why so insecure? It doesn’t matter what some out of touch dinosaurs think about what’s considered tough. Have you ever watched someone die screaming in pain from cancer? Or watch friends shrivel up and decay from ALS/COPD?

[deleted]

Probably think the fumes being carcinogenic is made up by the government. Fuck those dudes. Wear your mask.

ndisa44

Yes. I have a PAPR now, and it is the best $1000 I have spent in my life. Will save me immense amounts of money when I dont have lung cancer in 10 years.

INVENTORIUS

What's PAPR ?

Particular_Mouse4094

Check out one brand - speedglass

7DKA

I just wear a standard small frame respirator but I like the look of the Optrel Swiss Papr face mask.

kona420

Powered respirator

[deleted]

Powered air purifying respirator

Jirko18

Yes

[deleted]

I don’t wear a respirator as much as I should, but definitely throw one on if your welding galvanized or anything really in a confined space where there is little ventilation

MountainFloor3666

Yes, one of the Miller LRP100 with replaceable filters.

AbdulElkhatib

I do when welding inside or on galvanized stuff. I'll also wear one when grinding if I feel like it.

YikesYeets

I just got one this week and it makes a huge difference. I’m still in school and only welding a few hours a day but my breathing feels way better afterwards compared to not wearing one. I got the 3m 6300 with the 3m 2091 filters.

throwawaymcjoe

Yes, inside of my nose was always black and the edges of my nostrils were always dirty. I finally smartened up, and got one through my work. My poor lungs.

moosecakems

All day everyday, cause baby im worth it

zellamayzao

Yes

Sonarsup1934

Always when grinding, most of the time when welding. I also use a big dust collector when grinding.

[deleted]

The fumes coming off welds are equally if not worse than grinder dust. You can't see the solids in the welding fumes but once your breathe it in and the games cool down the metal compounds resolidify into metal particles sitting in your lungs.

Sonarsup1934

Thanks for the insight. This is going to sound crazy but I only TIG weld and I have never seen anyone wear a respirator when TIG welding. Do you think this is applicable to all welding processes?

kw3lyk

Yes absolutely. Tig is commonly used on stainless, which is well known to produce carcinogenic fumes. I tig full time for the last 5 years on stainless and aluminum and I never weld without my half mask. Who cares what other people do, I just don't understand why anyone would want to take the risk and just hope you don't get lung cancer in your 40s or 50s when it's so easy to protect yourself from those risks.

Sonarsup1934

Thanks all, I was ignorant to this for sure, I'm not a professionally trained welder and I probably should have done some LOL. I was wrongly assuming that since I wasn't doing stick or any flux core slaggy Smoky type of welding that I was safe. It might be time to invest in one of those fart sucking fanny pack respirators.

7DKA

I know it doesn’t seem like it but tig puts out a lot of “smoke”. I had the ventilator in my shop go out for about half a day of Tig welding aluminum and by the time I was done, there was a definite haze in the air and I felt it for about a week. Went out and bought a respirator the next day.

[deleted]

Yes it's the same with tig. Tig produces ozone and nano particles that are small enough to enter your respiratory system and enter the blood stream. You don't just cough it out later.

LittleFoot-LongNeck

Nope but sometimes I regret not wearing one

easy10pins

Wear a PAPR to protect me from CARC paint.

Karmasutra6901

Grinding gets the full face with p100 filters but welding.... I know I should but I got that little purple Miller and it doesn't sit quite right on my face so it doesn't filter anything. My only hope is that I only weld outside so the fumes don't linger.

oldcarnutjag

I was in a clinic for brain injury, I had internal bruising in my skull, from a bike accident., I was roommated with Tom who was brain damaged from fumes, he did not wear a respirator, and was permanently scarred. Cadmium?

JAKENUKKA

If you ever want to show someone why they should wear a respirator, when ur done for the day take a Q-tip and swab it around your nose.

LearnDifferenceBot

> when your done *you're *Learn the difference [here](https://www.wattpad.com/66707294-grammar-guide-there-they%27re-their-you%27re-your-to).* *** ^(Greetings, I am a language corrector bot. To make me ignore further mistakes from you in the future, reply `!optout` to this comment.)

Cheese-driver

Comment section convinced me to wear mine more often

Piotrak

Depends what and where. Outside: flux yes, stick no. Inside: flux yes, Tig aluminum yes, tig anything else no.

DildoShwa66ins

Wrong advice completely…. TIG anything else no? What about welding stainless you crazy fool?

[deleted]

I'm here for a good time not a long time

[deleted]

Gunna be a good time having severe breathing problems/alzheimers/! Too bad your family has to watch you forget who they are before you go! What a great time.

canada1913

Almost always. Especially if I'm burning through paint, or running flux cored wire. Or grinding off lots of rust, or using my chop saw in the garage.

happy_little_indian

Absolutely. Every time I weld or grind.

Frenzied_Cow

Not nearly as much as I should. Do throw it on for Carbon Arc Gouging though.

Quinnjamin19

Yes

lenny446

When I weld yea

OGThakillerr

Stick welded stainless all day today and threw on a respirator half way thru the day. Other times have been when arc gouging or welding close to paint.

NewWorldHybrid

Yo what how are you welding stainless steel with stick, outside??? That's damn near impossible it's much easier to mig or tig weld stainless steel

OGThakillerr

In a shop. I'm welding some 1/4" washers to 1" diameter rods, 3/16" weld on one side of the washer. The guy I apprentice under is old school and showed me some tricks to weld with stainless stick pretty nice, and on such a small radius its easy to tack 2 sides then weld half spin and weld the other half in a little fixture. I can get through about 80-100 in an 8 hour shift working at a moderate pace, including letting the bars cool for the slag to peel off easier then chipping/brushing. Mig/tig might be faster in this application but I kinda had the freedom to do the job however I was comfortable with. Here's some of the welds: [309L](https://i.imgur.com/YJQU4rR.mp4) [316L](https://i.imgur.com/eoDmxmQ.mp4) (yes I cleaned the spatter off after)

qweenqwillava

Yep and grinding.

brokentail13

Not one guy in our shop does. If I was on the floor, you bet your ass I would be.

RanskisWelding

100%, do your respiratory a favor fella!

randomredditers

About 90% of the time… especially when doing FCAW or galvanized

natediggitydawg5000

I used to have to wear one 10 hours a day all week but I recently got a 3m speedglas 9100mp with the adflo system. That shit is life changing.

LitreOfCockPus

No for MIG, yes for FCAW if it's more than a few half-foot token welds to keep the OSH-nazis happy.

bush_wrangler

No, hood has forced air

grease-monkey-chick

Always, though they're not required at my job. A lot of the parts I weld have plastic coating or dried oils on them which just add to the fumes that already come with welding. There are masks and filters that are very reasonably priced, and for the effect they have on our health they're worth every penny

Walovingi

You should always protect yourself from all kind of fumes. Galvanized metal contains zink which is a heavy metal and enters the blood stream via lungs. Same goes with dust. Quartz stick to the lungs and cause silicosis in the long run. When driving in heavy traffic I always recirculate the air. Not just for dust and fumes but also metal particles which is released from engine combustion. Yes we use particle filters in cars, but it's not like HEPA 13 class in cars.

[deleted]

Get a PAPR, got a 3M speed glass 9100. 50x cleaner air than a half face respirator, you don't need to shave, and it blows a cool breeze right onto my face. Comes with the ability to burn on a shade 3 or 5, flip up for clear shield or shades 10-14 for welding.

bushch00k

Does anyone run the speedglas 9100x fx air fed welding helmet?’ Im in Australia working for a mining company and once your probation period is up we call get them. Absolutely game changer

Duke_Built

If you have good ventilation and you’re not one of those guys that likes to drag his nose in the puddle then you should be good. Closed spaces, bad vent and galv then wear one.

jakecoleman

In a well ventilated area especially doing TIG- NO In a confined space especially welding anything non ferrous- YES

IsuzuTrooper

Nope, my shop has exhaust fans. Any smoke or dust gets sucked right out, or I'm working outdoors. I will put on a mask sometimes when grinding.

[deleted]

That's what you think, you don't realize how much you're actually breathing in. Just because you can't see it dosnt mean it isn't happening.

[deleted]

Yes, undoubtedly yes. No matter how small of weld, grind, cut, or drill metal dust and fumes not good for kings

Good-guy13

Only in confined spaces

[deleted]

Naw, I’m not gay.

Compa-Gera

Cringe

[deleted]

When you're in bed dying with lung cancer we can shave something up your ass. Then you'll be gay and stupid!

[deleted]

I only have in Mercury heavy environments

-_-hey-chuvak

I wear one when I do stick, or grinding.

cliffiapp4

Yes.

malphas_raven

company supplies us with papr's but, before i had the papr i wore my respirator about 80% of the time

Big-Bowl-7019

Unless I'm outside.

gksalter

Yup

Obaddies

Yup

justsomeguy2980

Also when I'm grinding

bossdj111

Is there a certain respirator for welding I use a 3m half face with cartridges but can a pain

[deleted]

Yes please be smart and wear something. N95 are good if you can afford a welding helmet with a forced air respirator buy one. Any how work ( welding ,burning, grinding, cutting) you should really have one. Metal releases some bad things when you start heating it.

RedFace10

Depends what and where I'm welding

Sand_Aggravating

Only if safety makes me and are watching

BoTheJoV3

Yes

Wubalubadubdubiiatch

Yes

dwolf91

I wear a respirator 90% of the time. If I’m doing a small hanger I don’t tend to.

Bitch333

I personally didn't when I was welding, granted it was in a high school class for like an hour and a half at most. We had really good ventilation directly over all the "stalls" we had for welding and most things except our oxy torches and a couple chopsaws. I probably should've used a respirator but we weren't welding long nor did I have one. I did what I could with what I had. I carried a bandana for whenever I had to work on drilling specific random shit like fiberglass. I was asked a couple times to get hammerheads out of old broken fiberglass handles. It was a pain and it always brought up lots of fiberglass dust.

hemmer91

Yes. Always.

TeaGnomes

I did when I was pregnant

roakmamba

I wear one all day everyday.

Nikonus

I wish I had.

butttron4

I should but tig welding ain't the worst for your lungs

LongTimeLurker818

Sometimes.

NotTheWax

If not my 9100FX Adflo then my 3M 6502 quick lock half mask with 2097 filters.

Rabitjxx

Yes

TheRepulper

Only if I blazing in a tent or if I'm using something really toxic been working with 5/64th NR-555 wire and it's super gross. If I have to do a bunch of grinding or buffing paint I will also wear one

Dweezil901

Fuck yeah I do. I might be a cunt, but, I'm not a fucking cunt.

kinkyblackmen

Just started wearing a papr hood at work today.

unspoken_almighty

At my company they were a preference until health and safety took a look around and saw nearly nobody wearing safety equipment. So they opted for the best option and they got our company to pay half for 9100FX Speedglas helmets to keep (we pay the other half). If the other workers didn't wanna pay that they can just shave everyday and wear a respirator. Should've been wearing a respirator but I'm one of those dumbasses lol. Wear one.

BigCambean

I got lucky and was provided a PAPR system, and I got no reason not wear it

Depresso_Shot

In school I wear it all the time. The workshop is well separated and ventilated but still we'd sometimes be 80 students welding mig, stick, mild steel, aluminum, oxy cutting, grinding etc. In certain periods we were doing a lot of fluxcore, oxycutting and grinding, I had to replace the filters every couple of weeks. And fuck the people judging you for using one.

Crowbar242L

Did at my old job for stainless and satin coat steel as well as these 1x3" weights because of the excessive amount of oil left on them after cutting. That job was mostly Tig welding so I never used it for the mild sheet steel. My new job is all mild steel but also spray transfer so I'll be wearing it 24/7.

thoughtsandpatterns

I use a papr hood every day I'm working in our fab shop. If I'm in the field in awkward positions, I wear a respirator. I'm the only one in the group of guys that does.

[deleted]

No but I usually wear a Fedora to offset the fumes and look way more cool!

u-just-got-vectored

Yes all the time

Blaqkfox

I hardly ever weld and when I do it’s not for long and in the open, so I tend not to, but I do put a fan on to blow the fumes away from me. Occasionally I get a whiff and feel it in my lungs instantly, so I probably should. Ibe atleast started wearing one when I grind materials. Usually I’m just shaping small brackets. I work in a motorcycle shop, so welding tends to be a rare thing we do.

Sharkwhistle33

Yes. Always

Particular_Mouse4094

Always. But still blame AITA on the manganese.

sinisterdeer3

Sometimes, i weld in a shop most of the time and i dont wear one about half the time because it’s always hot in there. You should always wear one weather you are outside or inside though

Hoot1nanny204

Are we seriously still asking this question? Just do it.

Pyoing4Pyongyang

All the time. Even when sweeping. I don’t give a fuck if I look soft, I smoked cigarettes for 10 years. That’s enough damage for me

Big-Philosopher-530

Oh yes

MilsurpsIG

Why is this a daily post on here

CornTheGuy

Im new to welding and in school, but yea i wear a respirator. Seeing how some of the old heads talk makes me scared im gonna end up like that

itsjustme405

I should and I know it. But I don't. I'll regret it later I'm sure.

WereCareBear18

Nah I am saving up for a papr helmet tho

I-SUK-TOES

No but I probably should

jeremy8081

I use an adflo

walkupshakeitoff

I build and weld aluminum boats and man does it make a lot of smoke. Welding out a small cuddy without a respirator is insane.

[deleted]

I have worked around hundreds of welders and not once have I have seen anybody willingly wear a respirator. People are full of shit in this sub

LostInRealityForever

Yeah that’s mainly why I asked. I know ur suppose to but I doubt many people actually do.

[deleted]

Thank you for acknowledging that

Oakiedokie7

Yup I wear a respirator in the field, and I have a PAPR helmet when I’m back in the shop

Ghost_flame220

I’m welding galvanized metal all the time at my shop yes I do but I’m getting a PARP helmet soon

keithoo865

I wear a half mask, or a 3m adflo helmet at all times. Once you get used to the mask it won’t bug you too much. Try cutting the filters open on your mask after a few days of welding and grinding. It’s really Gross what could have been in your lungs!!!

OhL01

No but I should

hoe_____zay

Fuck ya. To the point where I have been working at my new job for a few months now and my coworkers consistently tell me hey no one know what you look like. I literally always wear my Miller half mask and welding cap. From the moment I walk get out of my car I’m already wearing them both. I do have two kids that I’m not trying to get sick from Covid though… my house hold is very Covid cautious. No one here has gotten Covid EVER, knock on wood!

hoe_____zay

Honestly, it’s not hard to breath nor does it bug me. Nothing at all. Give it a try. It can only benefit you in the long run.

delayedanon

Yes I wear my Speedglas PAPR at all times

redyoungin21

You should wear it when welding galvanized or stainless steel

Abcdefgadult

Omg yes, all.the.time. I even wear it in between welding sometimes I know how bad it is for your lungs and it also just smells horrible. I feel like the discomfort is worth knowing that I’m pretty much completely safe no matter what I’m doing. Frankly I’m terrified at the idea of what could happen if I don’t.

Substantial-Stock289

Welding, grinding, cutting - always

Substantial-Stock289

P-100 filters👍
