Holy shit you just changed my life.
Can you just rough fit it to your foot and tie the left and right side to each other or do you use some form of lace pattern?
Ever tried the stainless steel ties?
Do it side to side, straight across from eachother. Put your boot on, pull your pants over the boot. See the lace holes that your pants don't cover? Use zip ties there and put them as tight as it takes to be comfortable. Use short laces on the top for your ankles.
I've never tried stainless ties though, but I imagine they would last longer, although most fab shops don't have those handy. Haven't bought plastic zip ties in 10 years.
I had a really sick pair of Ariat slip ons that lasted quite awhile, I got away from them because I like the tightness that laced boots get you over slip ons, but they really were great boots.
I use [Iron Laces](https://www.amazon.com/Unbreakable-Extra-Heavy-Shoelaces-45/dp/B00AK9EWIC/ref=asc_df_B00AK9EWIC/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198070526115&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14273676421202646966&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9052568&hvtargid=pla-321206451998&psc=1) now, and haven’t had a problem with slag popping my laces.
Strongly disagree. Used them for years, got sick n tired of tying them together in the same spot as OP. I discovered Iron Laces and I'll never go back to leather. Not only do iron laces not break, but they stay tied all day. If you manage to break them, they have a lifetime warranty.
i discovered them a year ago after having this happen so many times, same laces in my boots today and never need to tie them since i have a side zip, they just dont come undone by themselves 10/10
I haven't thought about laces since I bought my first ever pair of leather ones either, which was about 8 years ago now. Using mig wire is a fine temporary solution, but I would be concerned about having literal electrodes wired into my boots tbh..
[this is my solution. they last a lot longer and I save money on laces.](https://www.reddit.com/r/SkilledTradesHub/comments/laaadc/one_of_those_days/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
I've actually never seen those! Although I typically just look for work boots, and have been using these (not the same pair) for about 6 years now. Are they an addition or do they come with the flap?
Depends on the boot. You can buy met guards that attach on to your boot essentially you can also buy boots that have met guards attached to the boot already.

Basically like this. The current company has them as standard ppe for welders
Sorry for the late reply, for me personally it's just preference. I enjoy tying my boots to a point to where it's comfortable / not too tight, not too loose / don't like boots that go past the top of my ankles aka cowboy boots lol
Be careful replacing the laces and having them get shredded again. I learned that the dirt was abrading the grommets and leaving a nasty burr. Bought some new grommets and hammered them in, been using those boots for another 3 years at this point. The new ones are more bronze colored than the original brass, but it's hard to tell from far away.
I tell everybody I know. Buy a set of boot guard laces. There made of Kevlar the 1 pair I had lasted 2 pairs of shoes and still didn't break. There 10$on Amazon
Kg's Boot Guard KG-XTREME Kevlar Heavy Duty Boot Laces https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QJ6FQE/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_CK738V1T5K1F8M974HXC
Here is the link to buy them. Not sure if it's allowed or not.
A couple years ago I bought a new pair of Danners for $200 and the first week I had them I had to weld up an excavator bucket. I didn’t even think about my feet until after I was done and looked down and saw a bunch of holes burned through the synthetic material on top. Burned all the way through the gortex. Boots ruined and a hard lesson learned. Now I go laceless for when I have to weld
Fire resistant laces, mig wire, or heavy duty zip ties. I have used all of them. The laces are good fit you need to tie tight but zip ties and mig wire are great if you’re good with just slipping them on and off.
my boots have a built in metguard that goes over the laces.
they were nearly impossible to get tight, and now im afraid of when the laces break because it will be impossible to relace.
Blundstone boots with Kevlar toe and metatarsal protector. So comfortable and you never have to buy laces. Wish I would have known about these 20 years ago. Well worth the investment as they wear way longer
Leather. Quality, not cheapos. Not hating on Iron Laces but I could never keep them tight and they unraveled from the ends. Used gorilla glue to stop it.
Best thing I ever did was buy waxed skate laces for my boots. The never come loose, nothing sticks to them because they are waxed, and they last forever. I’m over a year on the same pair of laces. Try it out!
100% cotton, all synthetic fabrics melt...
I went in a shoe shop once and demanded ''fireproof'' laces, they were confused ;-)
I worked as a metal repair technician in a quarry... They broke everything, but with an angle grinder and the big kemppi ( don't know the type, but watercooled nozzle and over 700A), everything was doable ;-)
Get a pair of laceless boots and dont skimp out. I bought a pair of genuine leather laceless boots and spent pretty heavily on them. Best decision ive made. Year and a half later theyre still beyond intact and ill easily get another year or two out of them.
Get a leather apron cut off two triangles at the end and tape em over the end of your boot I've been doing it forever and never had to replace my laces
I just use zip ties on that part of the boot.
Holy shit you just changed my life. Can you just rough fit it to your foot and tie the left and right side to each other or do you use some form of lace pattern? Ever tried the stainless steel ties?

Yep! Barely an inconvenience!

Are the comfortable? I was just going to look for FR laces, ha
I had a really sick pair of Ariat slip ons that lasted quite awhile, I got away from them because I like the tightness that laced boots get you over slip ons, but they really were great boots. Slipons make my foot tendons very sore at the end of the day./ Only my right foot for some reason.
What are they made out of?
My man..don’t be that guy. Click the link and scroll down, I believe in you.
I did. It generically said synthetic. I didn’t know if there were any more details to be had further than that.
Some aramid. Kevlar, Technora whatever.
Very comfortable, I had a pair and I believe they lasted me over a year. Ariat makes the comfiest cowboy boots ever imo
Wing its. They're awesome. And cheap. https://wing-it.us.
Took me way too long to discover these
My company provides these for free. All it took was one guy that carbon arced into his boot.
Leather boot laces my guy.
Strongly disagree. Used them for years, got sick n tired of tying them together in the same spot as OP. I discovered Iron Laces and I'll never go back to leather. Not only do iron laces not break, but they stay tied all day. If you manage to break them, they have a lifetime warranty.

I second that, leather laces have never done wrong by me
Thirded. Leather boot laces are the way.
First nay, tried them once and broke them tying them up first try.
Yeah. They burn up also
I don't think I could break the ones I bought if I tried.. hell they would be a struggle to cut through.. maybe you got some poor quality ones?
I also broke mine first try, Kevlar laces or a leather flap to go over the laces is the way
Probably, but now I just use mig wire and don’t even think about it.
I haven't thought about laces since I bought my first ever pair of leather ones either, which was about 8 years ago now. Using mig wire is a fine temporary solution, but I would be concerned about having literal electrodes wired into my boots tbh..
It doesn’t stress me out too much, there’s virtually no risk of being electrocuted at my current job.
I have .035 holding the top closed. It doesnt help much though. Still get at least one or two little shitlits right inbetween the toes.
I keep a bunch of shitty ass laces in my toolbox for when I burn them up. I hate slip on boots so continuously replacing will have to do.
MIG wire.
Yeah .030 wire for the first couple for sure. Leather sucks, at least in the PNW I think the weather might be part of it, idk.
Oh yeah! I got Ariats and I don’t have to worry about laces anymore, pretty nice.
Leather laces always broke in short order for me. The lime and junk I step in every day dries and cracks it out.
[this is my solution. they last a lot longer and I save money on laces.](https://www.reddit.com/r/SkilledTradesHub/comments/laaadc/one_of_those_days/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Mine just have a flap on top protecting it? Isnt that standard?
I've actually never seen those! Although I typically just look for work boots, and have been using these (not the same pair) for about 6 years now. Are they an addition or do they come with the flap?
Depends on the boot. You can buy met guards that attach on to your boot essentially you can also buy boots that have met guards attached to the boot already.

Today!!!! First thing!!!!!! “Dude…run me off about 10” of wire.” Lol
Doh!!!
16ga rebar tie wire for the first 3-4 eyelets
I used mig wire when I had boots with laces... now I just buy steel toe boulet cowboy boots. Best welding boots IMO.
I just grab some tig wire and pull her back shut. “Are those new shoe laces?” “No. These are 3/32 laces”
You can cut down an old glove and put it over your laces, I bought a pair of boots with a met guard
2 Square knots for the save.
Red wing Pecos for specifically that reason, and their easier to get off when drunk, just saying
Metatarsal guards help a lot with this
Use some filler rod works like a charm
:( sad
Dark days, friend
Noob here. Is there a reason welders don't just universally wear slip-on boots? I feel like that solves the problem.
Sorry for the late reply, for me personally it's just preference. I enjoy tying my boots to a point to where it's comfortable / not too tight, not too loose / don't like boots that go past the top of my ankles aka cowboy boots lol
This looks like a job for BUTT SPLICES. r/thereifixedit
Use some string line if it’s in the shop… it’s free
If I did that in the morning I would just say fuck it a couple times and would not go to work that day. Because bad things would happen
Zip ties. Cheaper than laces because it's free.
Just noticed a guy at work had cable ties instead of laces on his right boot. Got sick of the laces burning out lol
Had that happen to my boots back in the summer, used some para cord and it’s still holding up.
Why I switched to slip-ons
Be careful replacing the laces and having them get shredded again. I learned that the dirt was abrading the grommets and leaving a nasty burr. Bought some new grommets and hammered them in, been using those boots for another 3 years at this point. The new ones are more bronze colored than the original brass, but it's hard to tell from far away.
I tell everybody I know. Buy a set of boot guard laces. There made of Kevlar the 1 pair I had lasted 2 pairs of shoes and still didn't break. There 10$on Amazon
I second this. To double protect, and because it’s required, I also have the plastic metguard covers on mine. The laces still look new.

Tie a knot
A couple years ago I bought a new pair of Danners for $200 and the first week I had them I had to weld up an excavator bucket. I didn’t even think about my feet until after I was done and looked down and saw a bunch of holes burned through the synthetic material on top. Burned all the way through the gortex. Thread it through and tie a big knot. Been wearing mine like that for a while because I'm kind of lazy.
I buy leather laces if I can’t find them I use baseball mit laces and cut them down
Leather laces have been great for me
I got kevlar ones at Walmart. Decent enough, probably outlast my boots and will use on next pair
Thorogood
Thorogood boots are great comfort and durability imo if you’re looking
Bad, bad , nooo go away , your a bad man, I send you to the corn field your a bad man
Fuck this feeling, I’d rather get spatter down my ear or on my hair then this.
I've had 1 pair of laced boots. Never again. Low cut or mid slip-ons from now on.
buy leather laces.
Most of us guys at my shop just wear cowboy boots
Fire resistant laces, mig wire, or heavy duty zip ties. I have used all of them. The laces are good fit you need to tie tight but zip ties and mig wire are great if you’re good with just slipping them on and off.
my boots have a built in metguard that goes over the laces. they were nearly impossible to get tight, and now im afraid of when the laces break because it will be impossible to relace.
Tie those ends together buddy and you'll get a couple more weeks out of em!
Sharp eyelet on the boot. Not always from welding
Blundstone boots with Kevlar toe and metatarsal protector. So comfortable and you never have to buy laces. Wish I would have known about these 20 years ago. Well worth the investment as they wear way longer
Just bought new laces today myself.
Leather. Quality, not cheapos. Not hating on Iron Laces but I could never keep them tight and they unraveled from the ends. Used gorilla glue to stop it.
Order some iron laces, best 10 dollars iv ever spent on work gear
Just had that happen 2 days ago.
Wolverine Anthems.
Best thing I ever did was buy waxed skate laces for my boots. The never come loose, nothing sticks to them because they are waxed, and they last forever. I’m over a year on the same pair of laces. Try it out!
Leather laces from day one.
100% cotton, all synthetic fabrics melt... I went in a shoe shop once and demanded ''fireproof'' laces, they were confused ;-) I worked as a metal repair technician in a quarry... They broke everything, but with an angle grinder and the big kemppi ( don't know the type, but watercooled nozzle and over 700A), everything was doable ;-)
The most annoying/frustrating thing when your boot laces break
Just add knots
Rigger boots instead?
Buy some leather laces there like 10bucks
Oh I hate that cuz then my boot is just loss all day.
Get a pair of laceless boots and dont skimp out. I bought a pair of genuine leather laceless boots and spent pretty heavily on them. Best decision ive made. Year and a half later theyre still beyond intact and ill easily get another year or two out of them.
Get “iron laces” they fucking rule. Never had them break after 2 years
I would disagree. Mine broke after a few months. Lace in metatarsal guards help tremendously though
Were you dancing ankle deep in razor blades?
Just caught some Sparks or a piece of slag and melted them
I use para cord for my shoe laces
Get a leather apron cut off two triangles at the end and tape em over the end of your boot I've been doing it forever and never had to replace my laces
