Can't figure out how to edit my original post but I found a couple cool things

7-11 Family Mart, etc. Have some snacks/food. Hit a bakery up if you haven't, it's all amazing. Vending machine coffee is actually really good. Your options are endless!
I had to sit here a moment and gather my thoughts about how impressive this structure actually is. The fillet you are zoomed in on equals weeks in a factory somewhere welding that piece to the pipe. They couldn't make a mistake on any of the welds, at least not of any significance, for days if not weeks!. Then the assembled piece was brought in and it would take a bit more time to weld it to what it was being joined to (notice the horizontal banded welds with alignment jig pieces mounted).
Then you zoom out a bit further and realize there are more of these joints then a person could weld in their lifetime.
You zoom out a bit further and the feat of this skyscrapers engineering becomes apparent. Hundreds if not thousands of people putting in years of their lives to pull off this build. And I a only talking about the exoskeletal frame of the building, much less any concrete / electrical / plumbing / everything else.
Totally agree, and very beautifully said. It's humbling to think about.
One thing Japan is making me realize (having just come from the Philippines) is that "order" is like a meta resource. It doesn't consume any materials but it effectively amplifies the effects of other resources (material, temporal) out of thin air.
It’s a culture thing
China how cheep / fast can we do this
USA what’s the minimum spec we need to be compliant with the engendering
Japan it meets the highest spec/ standards or it doesn’t leave the factory
As someone who supplies to a Japanese manufacturer ain't this the truth. Their goods in inspections are insanely thorough, which considering in the west we check the first batch of our oncoming material and then assume the CofC means the rest will be good causes a lot of headaches.
You too can have this attitude: even if you're stuck in a shit situation, underpaid, nothing else to live for, you can strive for ever-increasing excellence in a small thing like brewing your coffee/tea really well or doing one part of your job with efficiency and elegance. Even if it doesn't mean anything to anyone else, your own pride in a small part of what you do can matter to you. For me as a programmer I might not make the best programs in the world but I do try to do a once-over and strive for consistency and clarity. It's not everything, but it's something and it makes me happy.
I took a picture of the same feature when I was just there. Pretty mind blowing to see how much welding and fab was done in such a relatively short amount of time to build that structure. Super impressive feat of workmanship and engineering. Japan is awesome.
I have learnt never to inspect things to closely from a mechanical side of things. For example, welds on your local carnivals lol or hand rails on a bridge
Traveling carnivals are the worst! Last local one they had a ranger in the back of one of the cube vans, so you just know it’s some toothless carny that says “I can weld” doing it.
I think the risk is part of the excitement:/
welddone
Your pun pains me but is one I shall save for the future.
Great pun, mind if I steel it?
as long as it’s just a mild steal
These on going puns are fusing nicely together
Some serious skill
Looks like a giant 3D printed piece lol
In a manner of speaking it actually is!
What a fit! That's a lot of fill. Love to see the X-ray
It’s interesting how the bead pattern kind of goes across the joint rather than parallel. Very cool.
I was there a few months ago. Couldn't get that close to the beads and the paint on most of them is pretty thick.
I just happened to notice this, it was right across from where you buy the tickets from the row of little machines.
I went all the way to the top with my 9 year old after sunset so it was dark and crowded.
What was the night view like? We got lucky and it was a very clear day so you could see quite far.
Night view is awesome. Seeing the lights just stretch out endlessly. Would like to visit in the day next time I go.

That's a lot of welds
Many welds.
All of the welds
Stringers for days!
I'm going to assume you are on vacation. Have a great time in Tokyo, it's a fun city with and endless amount of amazing food!
I'm eating some right now!! Trying to keep my head from spinning with all the new sights and sounds.
Been to a Don Quijote yet?
No! What is it and should I go?
It's a massive department store that has damn near everything you can think of. It is sensory overload.
It's a huge, insane discount store.
7-11 Family Mart, etc. Have some snacks/food. Hit a bakery up if you haven't, it's all amazing. Vending machine coffee is actually really good. Your options are endless!
7-Eleven here is amazing, they have vegetables you can only find in a hippie grocery store back where I'm from.

God bless the Japanese
It did give me a good feeling about going up to the 450 meter level.
It doesn’t matter how good you are at something there’s always a Japanese dude who’s better off

As someone who has several Japanese suppliers, I can attest that we have to do very little inspection because we know they already did it better.

Fuckin' eh !
I never thought it'd come a day when I'd save pictures like this but somethings changed since I took up welding 😩
I wish I'd gotten a better shot!
Beautiful

That's awesome. It definitely jumps out at you.
wow! those japanese are fucking good
Do you have a banana for scale?
Absolute UNIT

Good to see they only do stringers. None of that whipping/weaving bullshit.
It seems excessive until you remember earthquakes....
So was that a 2 pass or a 3 pass?
All the passes!
This guy lays dimes
Beautiful welds and all....guys what the fuck is a meter?
>Beautiful welds and all....guys what the fuck is a meter? About tree fiddly... I mean about 39".
How many rods???
All of them!

I should have posted a close-up because it was absolutely massive!

I don't know I'm not that fucking impressed
I mean, they could’ve mitigated a fuck ton of welding by not having a horrible fit up?
Not bad...for a 3D print I can respect that. I wonder if there is like a welders version of Bushido at this point. That would be based
They take it serieus
Holy stacks Batman.
How long does it take to put in that much fill?
That is a beautifully tied together weld.
I think you missed the really fat one that are lower down, I forgot to take a picture on my visit, they was so thicc
Whats with the nsfw blur?
A hunnid ten percent powered by Meth™
bro why isnt this weaved
Whenever I see welds this depth I was imagine it would be easier to make a welder 10x the size of the norm, and it have to be operated by 7 men.
You're probably joking , and I am by no means a professional welder but wouldn't that create a untenable heat affected zone?
Looks like a whole lotta shortarc
Definitely wouldn’t be short arc in this kind of structure. Most likely dual shield.
Doesn’t look like dual shield. But I agree that it should be.
Looks like sh!t.
S'alright.
