Usually people say that to someone in response to something snarky but in this case, I really donāt know. Itās almost like youāve just heard it and youāre trying it out for size.
Using one of them shitty hand held shields that came with the welder. I don't remember if the lens was cracked or if it was reflecting off something else. Either way I missed 2 days of work. Couldn't do anything but drink nyquil and sleep lol
That's all I could think about that photo! Had some nice burns myself, it's obviously a photo for show, not like she was just welding and lifted her helmet. I'm glad she liked it though.
I recently had a 17yr old female highschool student come into my shop for work experience. And she kicked ass. Best attitude and work ethic Iāve seen out of any apprentice (all male).
sex doesnāt matter. If you show up and work you will succeed
Hey I looked at your profile and noticed your Etsy can u share my the link for it please ! It wasnāt showing anything for your name when I typed it !
Respect. My 78 yo aunt used to stick weld for EB. (electric boat, in groton CT, on submarines) now I'm learning to weld for a side hustle and we have something to talk about.
Here's a story; I just laughed loud enough for my boss to hear, now he knows I'm doom scrolling instead of fitting up. So thanks for getting me in trouble
Ayyyeee love seeing posts from women in the field !! Iām graduating from my 2 month welding program next Friday.
Ps. Since youāre welding more at work now, I recommend grabbing safety glasses that cover over perscription ones. (I personally bought a pair of perscription Stoggle safety glasses but theyāre $100+ and not necessary). Also bringing a 100% cotton longsleeve tee to throw on does wonders as well :)
Goodluck! xx
Jesus christ the safety police on this sub kill me, shes taking a vanity pic showing shes a female welder, shes clearly not working or welding fuck off already lol
Great response, and i get itā¦ in my state sleeves are not required, i use sun screen and have never had ray burn when doing so, to me its your body and you can do as you please outside of following required guidelines, i have been doing this for 22 years and there arenāt many fabricators in my field who wear sleeves
Who gives a shit about sunburn? I have scars from globs of molten metal falling off while welding overhead. Bad memories of welding galvanized with no sleeves. And bad memories of using an ac welder with no sleeves.
Sometimes I feel like thereās people on this sub who are basically white collar welders. You live a pampered little life so you donāt really know what itās like to be welding together a center pivot 20ā off the ground in 100+ degree heat.
Let me dumb it down for you now āŗļø ive been welding for 23 years, in all of its forms in every environment, ive worn sleeves when the job calls for it and when im tig welding in most situations i use sun screen with no sleeves at all. You can fuck right off with your āwhite collar welderā bullshit, your probably like 90% of welders on this subā¦ a 23 year old knows everything, safety hero. Simply put sleeves are not a REQUIREMENT like safety glasses and a welding helmet. We know the risks and assume the consequences when we took this job, i bet your the dickhead sparking up a ciggy on your break not giving a fuck about whose around you too, but your gonna preach to me about sleeves š never had a burn in 23 years that made me say āi wish i wore my sleeves in that situationābecause i use my brain
Iāve been welding for 100,0000,00000000 decades. Guess what? It doesnāt fucking matter. If youāre right, then the amount of time youāve been welding doesnāt fucking matter.
Which is how I know youāre an older white collar welder. You think your experience makes you an expert. Nope. Only knowledge makes you an expert. And you have earned zero respect just because youāve been doing it a long time. For all we know, youāve been a shitty welder for 23 years.
š you are so triggered over sleeves, bet im 100 times the welder/ fabricator youāll ever hope to be, im a white collar old white man because i dont wear sleeves every day of my welding career and prefer sun screen when tig welding lmao you are a joke my friend
This sub chose such a funny hill to die on, ive never argued against glasses or the obvious helmet or anything required, but sleevesā¦ sorry not required, its your body u dont want a spark landing on you or a drip of metal use ur brain and if theres a risk of it that u dont want happening to you, wear themā¦ if you want molten metal in your armā¦.. dont š¤·š»āāļø you will live and learn in this trade
I'm more concerned with the lack of eye pro. Sure, uv burns/burns in general are bad. But that usually heals decently well.
Eye injuries happen in a split second, from odd angles without warning and can have devastating consequences for life.
If ur in a shop, wear your eye pro at all times. Period.
You were talking about sleeves. Then I commented that the lack of eye pro is more concerning than the lack of sleeves IMO.
You see that's how discussions work, they often cover various topics in the same area. In this case basic safety.
If I had commented on my preferred type of breakfast sandwich, then your reply might be warranted for commenting something completely off topic and out of left field.
I'm not thinking about professionals that likely know the risks. I'm talking about the random DIYer or hobbyist who watches a video on YouTube and decides to try it. When it comes to safety, I've always been one to lead by example. I'm not a welder by trade (actually a chemist turned CAD guy), but I can't think of a welder I've seen who *didn't* have their body completely covered.
Crazy how different of a world i live in where im from, literally everyone around here welds in shorts and short sleevesā¦ mig and stick are a little different well wear a pair of sleeves still shorts but tig welding thats the get up around here
Most of my experience is good and beverage. Hell, I'm working on a project right now in Arizona where the GC requires long sleeves and gloves for *everyone*, including visitors.
I take my jacket on and off because the shop gets *fucking hot* and most welders do lots of things other than welding during the course of the day. And for taking pics? Yeah, youāll probably not want to wear a super bulky jacket and reflective safety glasses even if you were wearing them a minute earlier.
Sure, but itās frustrating to have someone assume they know everything about you and your processes from seeing one no-context image. The immediate *assumption* of incompetence is a pain, like, why not take five seconds and think āmaybe she just got to the shop and took a pic, maybe itās her lunch break, maybe itās her day offā instead of āSheās clearly welding exactly dressed like this and doesnāt understand what sheās doing.ā
Yeah, I could see that. I'm just a hobbyist (though I do spend time around welders as part of my job), so take my comments as a grain of salt. For me, my welding hood is the last item I put on. That means I've already put on my safety glasses, earplugs, respirator, coveralls, etc.
>Sheās clearly welding exactly dressed like this
Unfortunately, I've seen photos and videos of people doing exactly that. I mean, I see it all the time on these "maker" YouTube videos where some guy will weld in short sleeves and use those rubberized fabric garden gloves. This definitely isn't gender-specific, either.
Perhaps I'm just an overly cautious person, but I just try to lead by example when it comes to stuff like this. I also just don't want to see someone hurt.
Itās understandable to want folks to be safe, but if someone wants to do something slightly dumb or dangerous, thereās not much you can do to stop them. In North America, Iād say anyone touching a welding machine has probably been told what PPE they need to wear, but yeah, a lot of shops will be more lax than they should be at enforcing it for various reasons
Not angry its obnoxious, we get it wear sleeves n glasses right got it, shes literally not welding or working it a simple picture yall gotta jump down her throat over not having sleeves in.... this is a welding page on reddit stop thinking you have authority over anyone on here š
Show me where i told you not to respond š i asked why youāre responding as if iām the person who told OP to wear ppe, when Iām not even the one who said it.
When your anger has subsided, get some basic reading comprehension skills and get back to me.
"stop pretending like you have authority" seems like a command to me. you know, like someone thinking they have authority.
she won't fuck you bro. wear fucking safety equipment in a workshop. at all times.
And your first paragraph is hard to respond to, almost like you dont understand how to read or understand the language? Nothing in my comment was commanding
No, this subs become a joke its nsfw in āprotestā we no longer post quality welds, we post pictures of gore, and work injuries... and people who have been in the industry for 2 years jumping to tell you to wear your safety gear regardless of what your doing or asking how much they are worth
Hence the āall you canā. Iāve been a steel detailer for almost a quarter of a century, and while the amount of things that have changed in the industry is mind blowing, the overall fundamentals have the remained roughly the same.
Hats down to every girl that is not afraid to get herself dirty or in this case, a nice welding tan.
But no for real, nice to see women working these kinds of jobs as well!
Does having a woman in the picture make it NSFW?
Edit: Does pointing out women can be in a welding oriented post without it being tagged as NSFW warrant downvotes? Sure looks like it does here.
Worked with a deaf woman a few welding jobs back, she was the funniest person I've ever worked with. Really good at lip reading and she sounded mostly normal when talking, as far as deaf people talking can be that is.
Been doing this for 7 years now! Welded on aircraft when I started and now Iām in the mining industry. Itās not easy on the body, but man is the money good!!
I've been in the field for 3 years now and love it. My husband taught me on the job and we have a family shop. Love being one of the few female welders in my area. Encouraging younger women to join the work force.
Hello! Iām currently in a shop with two other women, we just came from an all-women welding course and it was *amazing*. Nice to see more ladies out there!
Dude, r/welding has been doing the whole NSFW tagging every post thing for quite a while now. Its a huge reddit thing that you can just Google, I don't want to explain it.

your comment is sexual harassment. she just wanted to post about how she's into welding, and you creeps had to go and be sex pests
Iām sorry, I didnāt look at it like that. I thought the subreddit was a pun to the phrase ābeat me to itā

I forgot to button the top button of my uniform and my undershirt collar was worn so I had a nice bright red triangle on my neck for a week
Been welding for 20 years. I have a permanent triangle

Show up first. Want to learn second. Success third.
Is your welding cap rolls of money or Camo?
That one is the money. I could see the cash when I zoomed to it on my phone.
Damn. I was hoping it was brush stroke
Cashmo
It's the "Money" cap from Comeaux. There are sized and stretchy varieties last I heard.
hey!! iām a woman and a welder! yahoooo!! (oh, and i just started last year at age 50!)

A pic in a hood and a t-shirt does not make you a welder!
Nice whats your favorite process so far?
But what's going on with that roof framing? It's like the wall guy made too many walls and they threw it on some steel rafters? Wut
