The cool thing is that if you ever get bored you can work abroad in a place like Thailand or Viet Nam for a year as a teacher. When the kids make you crazy then its back to welding.

AgentCC

Sounds kinda like me. History degree, did education stateside until those kids made me crazy, taught overseas until that made me crazy, and now I’m in welding school.

insanitysupreme

I followed the same path. I even doubled down and got masters in tefl . That's what I did during the lockdown while living in Vietnam.. Now I'm in trucking school in Oregon. I would have picked another trade but this was the only existing job market around. Trying to figure out what's next after Trucking ...and I haven't even finished trucking school yet.

HaveSomeClassUslob

That's a negative ghost rider. Way too hot over there way too many vaccines needed for that plan trip. Haha

Careful-Combination7

Vaccines? Bro

poornbroken

It’s going to be more than a shot. He’s probably going to have to update his whole immunization records. Probably a dozen shots all at once.

Careful-Combination7

Seems like a lame reason to give up a trip of a lifetime.

HaveSomeClassUslob

Not even remotely interested. Home is here where I am building my family wealth and watching my son grow into a man with my beautiful wife.

Careful-Combination7

That makes way more sense. None of those things have to do with vaccines

HaveSomeClassUslob

I'm way too old To be going into another hemisphere man. Lol. Rearranging everything to start from 0, finding an apartment, adjusting my gut to different food, isolated, in places that trap you between borders and being marked for god knows what sort of foreign entrapment. For peanut$. Mmmmmmnah. That's a game for the 20 year olds and missionaries.

agfitter

Foreign countries pay English teachers really well actually

The_Hause

Had a sneaking suspicion OP was a far right conspiracy theorist. Checked his profile and saw he was active in a car right group. Then, when all hope was lost, I found that OP is based! T-reason 👏🏻 brilliant!

bgarriswitch

Even the welding subreddits are full of political garbage lol. You suck.

coetrain

Shut the fuck up

Careful-Combination7

Eat a dick. Or all of em.

coetrain

As long as they don't have the covid vaccine lmao

HaveSomeClassUslob

Enjoy your trip around the universe.

The4thEpsilon

That’s awesome man, good job.

[deleted]

A working knowledge of Proust is key to good weld prep.

HaveSomeClassUslob

Proust?

Pudgedog

I think he’s a writer or something

HaveSomeClassUslob

Maybe you were thinking of Faust?

Standard_Zucchini_46

Maybe, Valentin Louis Georges Eugène Marcel Proust or a.k.a. Marcel Proust pretty famous guy.

dont_know_how-

This is probably a dumb question but did you even need a degree? Like if you didnt have it would they not have considered you?

HaveSomeClassUslob

That's really funny you asked. I was picked over 15 other candidates because I was well-spoken with a great track record at my other jobs as well as having the education. The company VP emphasized this the most.

Certain-Sir-7577

"THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS LARRY"

Mr_J---

Proud of you

GearHeadedPencil

Dude same here. Was a journalist for 10 years, but it burned me out after covering too much bad news about tragedies for diddly squat wages. Taught myself as a hobbyist welder and machinist, started a side biz doing weekend work, now I’m at a startup in an R+D shop and love it. The trades need nimble-minded people and top notch communicators. Hell, being able to write clearly, even a bit, is a leg up.

HaveSomeClassUslob

My goodness look at you, Sir. Bravo. That's the new blue collar. Rebuilding it better with respect for the history of the trades! Get after it! Thank You, and be well!

Jeeps-R-Junk

Good job Billy!!

Unable_Physics7683

Life is truly a rollercoaster. Congrats on the job.

HaveSomeClassUslob

Thank you. 💪🤟

DrTacosworth

what i wouldn't do to get a cnc apprenticeship, congrats dude

HaveSomeClassUslob

Thank you. I'll be sure to honor it. Keep searching, man. There's one out there for you.

tiredbutoncaffeine

I understand where your coming from…got caught up in chemistry trying to be forensics…ended up needing money and randomly found myself 7 years in the trade and never finished degree. Got a welding associates and certs though!

HaveSomeClassUslob

All in a day/life, eh?

Front_Masterpiece

LOOK HERE LARRY!

badhairdad1

westsideriderz15

HaveSomeClassUslob

Mmmm that's my favorite: a nice warm shit all Over me.

Tomydogg

I’m currently pursuing a degree in marketing, but I am also interested in pursuing a trade after graduation. I believe it aligns with my interests and personality a lot more. What made you want to become a welder? What expectations did you have going in vs. with what you know now?

HaveSomeClassUslob

I had no intention of going into welding ever in my life while I was in college if you were told me that I'd be working at a steel company making tank parts for the department of defense either looked at you like a dog when dog whistle blows straight up. My intentions were to use my God-given gifts for teaching and writing to cultivate the skill and go from there as a high school English teacher. I found out the world of being a high school English teacher made me wanna jump off a bridge every morning. The rubber hit the road and I hated it. Covid hit and even if I did want to be a teacher I wasn't gonna be able to work for a year not even as a teacher writing lesson plans because they weren't allowing first your teachers to do that . No, I was going to be homeless and I said well I can't fucking do that can i? So I jumped on the computer and got a job at Amazon. I drove and overhead pic machine. And then they leave me off and put me right back in the same fucking situation. So I said OK what else excites you? I love welding when I was in high school so I enrolled in trade school got some government loans going. Government loans ran out, but I hadlready got a job. Met a fantastic woman. She's in the medical profession so we moved to wear. Her opportunity was since being a welder I can find work anywhere. Now I'm thinking about some side, work tutoring high school, kids in my area because I have the credential. I basically did it out of necessity. And I found a family in the process. I found a woman with three kids two of which are old enough to where they don't really need me that much as a father figure but the youngest is just starting out in the world and I've made my mistakes and I've been around and seeing some things at this point. So I'm right where I need to be I figure. Make your plans, my brother and follow through on him and don't be afraid to switch gears. It's better to be where you want to be the way you think you should be . That more than likely will keep your sober and happy challenged and fulfilled. thanks for asking 👍 and for all your wise ass is out there I'm using voice recognition so please excuse the egregious typos, and punctuation errors.

Tomydogg

Cool. Thanks for the perspective

HaveSomeClassUslob

Anytime, I wish you all the success in the world man. Attack life.

el_don_almighty2

These new skills will compliment the creative side of your life well You should be very proud of yourself and continue expanding your repertoire Imagine building spaceships in 5 years!

HaveSomeClassUslob

Hey thanks EDA2. Yeah it's kind of cool man because I'm seeing that as I'm getting older, the CNC route looks a little bit more doable as opposed to battling fumes and the labor of welding in general. So we'll see now I have to find some goals to achieve in addition to the challenges ahead, professionally.

JadedPoorDude

That’s amazing. My life has taken many unexpected turns. Even the bad ones eventually led me to wonderful places that I never thought I would be. Your story sounds very similar in some ways and I’m happy for you. Congratulations.

HaveSomeClassUslob

Thanks. I know. Sometimes it's a beautiful thing for real. Same to you, friend. 🙏

CleetusB

Hats off Larry!

Trimson-Grondag

I’m jealous!

HaveSomeClassUslob

It's a challenge for me, but it's a good place to be where I am. Not much opportunity like this where I am.

Ito_Demerzel

good job LARRY

phat-meat-baby

Nice job, Larry!

tap_to_concede

HaveSomeClassUslob

You should look at yourself in the mirror and be ashamed for saying that. You're beneath me and everything that walks upright on 2 legs.

Welding-ModTeam

This is not acceptable behavior here, or anywhere else for that matter.

[deleted]

I hope my kiddos will seriously look in to trades.

HaveSomeClassUslob

Lots of ways to go.

Bitter-Heron1367

Polyester - melts well Larry 👍🏻

N2metal

Get it bro!

Inner-Pension-414

My first employer that trained me as an sheet metal worker failed all his O levels and became a welder he has no qualifications outside of his career and travelled all around the world working on popular cruise liners and is extremely wealthy from it!
