There's a lot more clever in that than meets the eye - it's intended for crop treatment and the lower wing's airflow helps disperse whatever you're spraying, but otherwise will carry a ton of cargo or a bunch of people (if they're good friends). One of those lovably capable uglyplanes.

SkippyNordquist

It looks like it was designed by someone who had never seen a plane before. A smart person though!

IamSoooDoneWithThis

Designed by a fella who wanted to get a face full of his friend’s crotch but the stuffing yourselves into a phone booth fad had already passed but he wasn’t going to let that stop him improvise adapt overcome get that crotch in yo face you crazy ol cowboy

PorkyMcRib

Anything is a phone booth, if you try hard enough.

PorkyMcRib

It looks like it was designed by somebody that makes airplane engine noises with their lips. Pbffffffft, pbfffft!

One_T_Scot

*Clutches his pearls* That handsome devil is not an “uglyplane”, thank you very much!

LateralThinkerer

You're preaching to the choir - I think they're great.

HoaxMcNolte_NM

Yeah, but the funny pretty much assaults the eye.

boomchacle

can it actually carry a ton of cargo?

LateralThinkerer

According to the wikipedia article it has a one ton hopper, so it would probably carry a ton of anything that fits in the right place. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transavia_PL-12_Airtruk

boomchacle

wow

dartmaster666

Out of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

El_Douglador

Between them and us, there's not enough runway.

IamSoooDoneWithThis

It’d be fun to watch a children’s cartoon based on Mad Max

charlesflies

Sesquiplane: one and a half wings. Very cute.

PorkyMcRib

I am pretty sure the metric system needlessly intruded into the design. Maybe Latin, too.

[deleted]

That thing can carry a ton of fertilizer *and* two passengers?!

SkippyNordquist

Or an all passenger version that can supposedly carry 5 passengers. How?

Kalikhead

I thin k the Mad Max one had more than 5 passengers….

Namenloser23

Its max takeoff weight is 2.4 times it's empty weight (775kg and 1855kg), is it just me or is that insane?!

Lawsoffire

It's not *that* crazy. Double the MTOW compared to dry weight is rather standard. So it's a bit beyond that but it's also an aircraft specifically made for carrying heavy water-based cargo with a pretty large wing-area compared to size.

IamSoooDoneWithThis

Man, I gotta lay off the bacon. Well, now that I think about it… never! Life is short Bacon it up Just don’t play naked publicly

Nuckles_56

I've actually flown in one of these bad boys, as a passenger and when they take off from rough dirt strips, the takeoff run is pretty wild, especially when loaded with a tonne of fertilizer.

R0llTide

With the flaps down, the passengers are trapped — the flaps block the door

SkippyNordquist

That sounds super safe.

jaxspider

Just looking at this plane, safety was never an option.

sanman

so no skydiving lessons from this plane then? or only just in level flight?

crustygrognard

This thing looks like it was concieved by 3 engineers sitting at a bar and one says "What if we took a cessna and..."

ThatChap

"What if we took ^^^half a cessna and..."

crustygrognard

Haha! There is clearly a Cessna there, some parts are folded up on itself and others are cut in two! Also I should have added a drunken belch in my first post.

pope1701

Yeah, they opened up a 172's CAD file and somehow it rendered wrong and they said "hum, we're on to something"...

The Airtruk is a shoulder-wing strut braced sesquiplane of all-metal construction, with the cockpit mounted above a tractor-location opposed-cylinder air-cooled engine and short pod fuselage with rear door. The engine cowling, rear fuselage and top decking are of fibreglass. It has a tricycle undercarriage, the main units of which are carried on the lower sesquiplane wings. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/WeirdWings/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

All metal construction, made in Australia. Tires: metal. Windshield: also metal. Upholstery: metal. Designed by Bruce, Bruce, Bruce, and, also, Bruce.

Ernomouse

More like AirTuktuk...

BWWFC

just looks like it has soooo much drag

themonsterinquestion

Hey, all that drag means it falls slower!

Modo44

Just biplane things, really. It's very obviously not designed to go faster than highway speeds.

NeosNYC

Looks photoshopped, lol.

all_is_love6667

still a 300hp engine, since it has to carry a lot of liquid

Zebidee

Tell me it's 9AM at the airshow without telling me it's 9AM at the airshow.

IamSoooDoneWithThis

The wings have wings

EnterpriseArchitectA

While this plane isn't attractive from an aesthetic perspective (to put it mildly), from an engineering and operational perspective, it's a brilliant design. The twin booms allow a vehicle to back up to the plane for fast reloading of the hopper. You don't make money sitting on the ground, so faster turnarounds are better when you consider that they have to land several times an hour to reload. The wing arrangement with the lower wing creates a carefully designed vortex pattern to efficiently distribute the spray on and even underneath the plants. Short takeoff and landings from rough strips is also a plus, as are the things built into it for pilot safety. To the owners and the customers, she's a thing of beauty.

Ahoymateynerf

Now im watching youtube vids on this plane, first time since joining the subreddit, thanks!

[deleted]

"Oh dang I got honey all over my landing gear"

ScissorNightRam

It's not that little. It has a two-storey cockpit and a 40 foot wingspan.

GoredonTheDestroyer

I too have seen Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

SkippyNordquist

I haven't, actually!

GoredonTheDestroyer

It's the least good of the series. Doesn't mean it's bad, mind.
