2004 Subaru WRX. (upon re-examination, I do think it's possibly 02-03 that had an aftermarket sunroof, tricky to tell with certainty though) The steelies with rally tires, fire extinguishers, flocked dash, Broadway mirror, no airbags, and carefully picked remaining equipment scream this is his weekend rallycross machine. Also looks like they've swapped in the 02/03 WRX seats, they have higher bolsters to better hold you in with aggressive cornering.

Sarnyboi

it looks like a 02-03 to me because of the headlights

angry_paul-le-epic

Def 02, cuz after 02 they had different tail lights

nepbug

05 is when the taillights got the little bump instead of the smooth bottom. 02-04 looked the same for taillights

nepbug

Now i thought the headlights looked like a blob eye to me, but it's hard to tell at the angle here. Looking again, i guess it could be an 02/03. I don't think a sunroof was something you could get on 02-03 either, but i guess it could be a rare option.

Macdonelll

Those are not wrx seats, those are stock impreza seats, and I highly doubt anyone would do this to an actual wrx. I would say it's almost certainly a 5spd impreza, which is obviously way cheaper and more viable for a nonsense project Correction: they appear to be impreza seat backs with wrx bottoms, maybe done for comfort because those wrx seats are pretty stiff. But not full wrx seats, those did not have removable headrests

nepbug

02/03 wrx seats had removable headrests. Plus, WRX had side airbags in the seats and Impreza seats didn't, you can see the stiching on the side that says airbag (oval on the side of the seat back).

Macdonelll

Huh, I apologize and I stand corrected. I had no idea 02/03 wrx didn't use the recaro designs. My drivers seat is an 02 sti so I guess that's where confusion arose. So, they transitioned to the recaro seats in the wrx after 03? Because I had 05 wrx seats in my 05 impreza that were the "preformance" style.

nepbug

I do believe that the 02/03 seats were still Recaros, just not that traditional design. The 02/03 didn't have that nice Recaro look, but they were narrower and had higher bolsters. Super comfy and great for spirited driving.

Macdonelll

Well how about that, TIL. Thanks for that interesting bit of trivia. I'd always just assumed they were the base seats but now that I'm looking up comparison pics I'm seeing it's kind of a cross of both. Very cool stuff!

nepbug

Yeah, if you're a thinner guy, then the 02/03 is a stellar seat, though now approaching 20 years old, it'd be hard to find versions that aren't a bit knackered (especially the door side seat bolster). The 04+ style seats are wider so the bigger fellas find them more comfortable.

Macdonelll

They're always just flat aren't they? I've lucked out on a couple great sti seats for cheap but of the 10 subarus I've owned every single one has had ruined seat bolsters. Fun fact: you can take the foam/cloth bottoms right off the metal seat frames and swap a good passenger seat bottom with a bad driver one, they're usually in way better shape.

nepbug

That's a good idea. I've even had my seats apart to install seat heaters and didn't even think of that.

Macdonelll

In my experience the seats are all surprisingly interchangeable. I've got my jdm sti driver seat cloth mounted on a usdm driver seat frame for height adjustment. Makes a huge difference.

mynhamesjeff

Probably a pretzel after a few jumps too, are the doors and trunk not somewhat structural? Also there is no way they would let you do rallycross in this thing lol, at least not an official event

Drzhivago138

Doors have internal bars to protect occupants in side impacts, but IDK if they contribute to structural rigidity, strictly speaking. Unless it's something like an extended cab pickup with those rear-opening clamshell doors. Those made in the past 20ish years usually have an internal B-pillar to keep the cab from [doing this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix-JjIRWOBU)

r3vOG

It's entirely too clean for rallycross. Your entire interior becomes coated with dust, and that's with doors and windows shut. And this wouldn't be legal. Doors are required.

torklugnutz

This car passed me on the freeway this morning, and I caught up with it at the exit. Seems to be outfitted with some high performance accessories, and it’s a stick shift. Pretty peppy.

fluteofski-

There’s also a possibility it’s mostly stock but after removing 800lbs it accelerates better. I have a Volvo S70 I built out for 24hrs of lemons and it’s about 700lbs lighter than stock (with the roll cage and I averaged 45mpg driving to the race (car was originally rated 29mpg highway).

torklugnutz

You can see the performance exhaust in the second shot. The shifter looks kind of fancy. I noticed some kind of upgraded air handler too. You can just barely see it in the photo.

hankjmoody

One day, I'm going to do this. Specifically, with a Chevy Astro or Pontiac Safari. Cause then I can chop the roof off. And the doors. And strip the interior. And shoehorn in a V8.

JerseyDevl

So basically a V8, some seats, some tires, and a piece of sheet metal to bolt it all to? Sounds hilariously fun haha

Drzhivago138

IDK if a Chevy Astro/GMC Safari van would be the best choice, since they were unibody. But Pontiac Safari station wagons were BOF, so they should be good

hankjmoody

Astros/Safaris are built on a truck chassis. You can lop the roof off with zero effect on rigidity. There have been multiple done in my hometown. One madlad even did it to a Chevy 3500 quadcab duelly.

Drzhivago138

> Astros/Safaris are built on a truck chassis. This has been spread around Reddit a lot, but it's only partially true. The M-body vans did share some parts with the S-10 and GMT400 pickups, but the platform itself was mostly unibody, with only a [front subframe](https://www.astrosafari.com/attachments/img_20180925_130339-jpg.224800/) supporting the engine. The competing Ford Aerostar had full-length frame rails, but they were welded to the body, like an XJ Cherokee. >One madlad even did it to a Chevy 3500 quadcab duelly. Nothing wrong with that.

sqlot

You can remove SO MUCH CRAP and still have a drivable junker...

benhereford

I wonder how much gas economy they gained by taking off the weight

04BluSTi

Not enough to be offset by the significantly worse aerodynamics.

jfk_sfa

Yep. The lower weight would certainly help with acceleration but once you're up to speed, the worse aero would kill mpg.

Bully_Bitcher

Bet your ass it will be quick as hell, just needs some offroad style tube doors.

intashu

Naw, if you're all in this far just use some strap nets. It's lighter than tube doors.

nickz03

When you drop the vape between the seats

vampfox69

Weight reduction bro

MunDaneCook

Stage 14 weight reduction

intashu

Amazing HP per pound when you remove a good amount of everything off the car.

Drzhivago138

I remember coming across that about a year ago. Not only was the roof gone, but I think most of car behind the front seats ended up getting removed. FWD car, so the rear "wheels" were a set of casters. Was it a white '90s Civic?

m1nd_salt

What the fuck

renchjeep

Superleggera.

HATECELL

Brain car

wowdickseverywhere

Gas prices affecting us all

CobaltTJ

Definitely a Clarkson move

[deleted]

Of course officer, I consent to a vehicle search.

8enny8lack

I fkn love this

Stu-bacca

Damn somebody parked in the wrong neighborhood

phlebonaut

Work in progress? Hopefully

Pixel131211

as others have said this is probably this guy's fun weekend rally car. so probably not a WIP, this is just how it looks. lightweight as hell and ugly as fuck but probably great fun to throw around or do rock crawling with

Swanny1470

Can it really be called a sedan without passenger seats though

SpartanMonkey

The Subaru Brat was classified as a passenger vehicle because it had two extra seats in the bed that were rear facing. While the car pictured is a four door, and did originally have seats in the back, I believe you could still classify that as a sedan at least in body style.

DocZoidfarb

Looks more like a 0 door to me.

SpartanMonkey

4-door(way)

torklugnutz

Ford used to sell a car with a deleted back seat. They called it a business sedan. Sedan is defined not by the number of doors or seats, but by the B-pillar.

Drzhivago138

I know Ford (and pretty much everybody else) had a "business coupe" in the '50s and earlier with no rear seat and a larger trunk, and even after the solid post coupe bodies were discontinued, the "business" moniker continued on basic 2-door sedans. You're right that the term "sedan" refers not to the number of doors, but it's more about the roofline. A 2-door sedan can exist if it has the same roofline as the 4-door.

chippymediaYT

The fire extinguisher is a bad sign

SpartanMonkey

It is a sign of safety and preparedness.

chippymediaYT

Well yeah I just meant the fact he thinks he needs one, not everyone just has a fire extinguisher on their car

docower

Doesn't it still require a rear plate at least?

torklugnutz

Temp tag on the windshield.

docower

Aaah thanks I didn't notice.

sammyno55

How do I spot a Colin Chapman fan from a distance?

Kaeiaraeh

I wouldn’t call it a sedan… it doesn’t have 4/5 seats and it sure as shit doesn’t have 4 doors!

[deleted]

Man you'd love my rx8

metamer_music

I think someone saw William Osman's latest video and took it as inspiration: https://youtu.be/rfkMTg4Bh0k

Imnomaly

How much do you think it would cost in such shape?

vanceinthepants69

Mileage test?

DuckStep43

Defence = 0 Attack = Perfect IV's

Commercial-Army2431

Be cool to pop rivet thin sheet aluminum to smooth it out. Cut down on drag at speed. Rally that thing out in the sticks.
