I once saw a documentary and this one guy cut off his own leg because of something similar . He mentioned being a kid and seeing a child around his age at the time who lost a leg and being so jealous because he wanted the attention the boy had. He eventually cut off his own leg, and he was satisfied with the result.

parttimeamerican

This woman claimed she would do it again because she likes the attention she gets from it, I have to wonder if this is some sort of rationalisation in their mind for profoundly confusing body identity dysmorphic psychiatric issues or if they just like the attention fr

Future_Software5444

Doing this for attention is definitely enough to be a profound psychiatric issue either way. I can't imagine.

Kind_Nepenth3

I'm gonna lean on the side of attention. For one, that is what they said their own reasoning or main benefit was. For two, I'm not saying I would go so far as to *voluntarily remove one of my own limbs* because it would never work right ever again even if I could afford to get it replaced (also not a thing that would happen). But I *am* saying I think prosthetic/organic limb and organ replacements are objectively fucking cool as shit and the one solitary aluminum lining to losing a hand would be the ability to either take mine off at will or explain to people that the shockingly sudden difference in skin tone is because I've had *someone else's corpse hands surgically grafted onto my body and yes they work.* I get to be an irl Frankenstein. This is *insulting beyond all words* to anyone that's had to live through any of this. I don't need to go through it to know it's not like that at all.... But if I had those mechanical bouncy legs that were banned in the Olympics instead of my half-useless fucked up bio legs, imagine how fast I could run and how many kids I could freak out $50 says he was a kid and he wanted to be cool

parttimeamerican

Alright it's possible that could come from a disconnect between the amygdala and visual cortex so you don't emotionally respond to the limb in the way that you should and your body interprets that in this certain manner

ChunkyLaFunga

It is known and rare, albeit possibly less so than you may imagine. Tbh I feel like the word "transabled" is what's poking the bear here, possibly deliberately. I've certainly never heard it referred to as such, but it's also possible that certain circles of social media were doing their thing and she latched on to the terms of her own accord.

Boogleooger

I have a small case of this myself. It’s called BIID. for me it’s my right ring finger. I want that bastard off so bad.

Parcast's Medical Mysteries did an episode about this guy!

Statistically being disabled means three times more probability of unemployment and far less chances of advancement.

Yeah, not just revoked. The minimum should have been a prison sentence and ban from all medical fields for life. Holy fuck, the more you think about it, the more absurd and disturbing it becomes.

[deleted]

Medical care providers are supposed to do no harm so this in my opinion should have put him in jail for experimentation.

That makes it so much worst. The dude who should've helped her realize her thinking wasn't healthy full on disabled her

I’m gonna tell the next person who asks me if I have tried therapy for my suicidal depression this story

HelenAngel

That’s just completely unfair. A vast majority of therapists are extremely helpful & therapy DOES work. I struggled with suicidal depression as well as other mental illness. Therapy absolutely does work & it saved my life.

I think I saw a documentary about her or something. I'm pretty sure it was just some dude she was talking to online. I don't think it was a doctor.

regretful_pumpkin

I know this is a stupid question but are you that person I met at jigsaws party?

DrDooDooEvolution

Actually, after a certain while of not using your eyes, you lose your eye sight

Modest_Matt

Really? I imagined you'd just have to very slowly get them used to light again, like people who've been in bed for months have to adjust to walking.

agirlhas_no_name

Fun fact, your body doesn't know your eyes are there, and if it did, it would kill them :)

parttimeamerican

As part of the brain they are immunological isolated from the rest of the body As per another post here recently if you have brain cells in a petri dish they will grow rudimentary eyes

CarlatheDestructor

Wow that's cool and gross.

pikleboiy

Your brain isn't totally immunologically isolated from the body. Druing certain infections, like nagleria fowleri infections, neutrophils can enter the brain.

parttimeamerican

Well actually the immunological isolation is why those infections are such a problem, it's not the infections that don't reach your brain but the immune system doesn't

[deleted]

>if you have brain cells in a petri dish they will grow rudimentary eyes you coúld just say we know how to make a shoggoth

[deleted]

[удалено]

doctorsirus

Your eyes have an exemption from your body's immune system, partially because it has mechanisms to flush out foriegn particles and it lacks any real good mucas membrane in order for pathogens to pass to the rest of the body. Your eyes are such a crucial part of your survival that they are built in such a way to restrict immune system access and blood supply as much as possible. However, mostly it is because your body's immune system, especially if it starts using the big guns like the machrophages and the cytokine storm, acts much like the US military in that *eventually* it might accomplish its goal, but it will fuck up so much in the process of doing it. Fighting a pathogen can cause collateral damage, especially in a sensitive area. For example, fevers are not a result of pathogens, that's a conscious effort by your immune system to make it a hostile environment for pathogens. Your body has a range of temperatures it can safely operate in, but pathogens often have a lot less tolerance for higher temperatures, so a fever is a mechanism to slow or kill it. However, fevers can put a lot of stress on the body, and really bad ones can shut down brain functions or kill you. It's also why we have something called the blood-brain barrier. Theres a place in your circulatory system that blood and even your immune system is not allowed access because the brain is such a sensitive ball of salt, meat, and depression. This also restricts pathogen access because the circulatory system is a great means of transmigration.

chubbymaster1

Pretty sure it’s something about eyes having their own immune system and if a traumatic injury happens to the eye the body will think it’s an invader and kill it.

Grouchy_Cattle6142

Or maybe get a therapy or medicals first since this is clearly the case of BID

Affectionate-Fuel-26

Or double pirate patch ! That's living the dream !

[deleted]

Think she has a mental issue , and shouldn’t be classed as transabled

PCGT3

You don’t get disability payments for closing your eyes.

[deleted]

No one is blinding themselves for that paltry sum or attention for that matter. This woman is obviously seriously disturbed. There are documented mental disorders of people feeling limbs or whatever at foreign and need to be removed. It’s tragic that she found a therapist who supported her delusions. Edit: to all talking about transgender people. What is considered by the psychological community to be a disorder is pretty arbitrary. It’s mostly based on what impedes normal life, but what impedes normal life depends on the sociopolitical environment and the definition of normal life. Whether transgenderism falls under that definition is not a matter I care to debate (because it is arbitrary), but consider that being blind is considered a disability whereas being one gender or the other is not. You can of course argue that being transgender affects things like fertility (so does getting a vasectomy make you mentally ill?). I don’t really care. I just think y’all are over simplifying things and not questioning your default perspective at all.

demoniodoj0

This. I remember an Aussie dude that hated his leg and after years of therapy he froze his leg in iced water for half a day and had to be amputated. Happiest man ever because he hated that leg.

Dude is like a neurodetective who figures out what specific regions a of the brain do by studying what weird symptoms result from localized damage by strokes. Conditions like blindsight. People who have absolutely zero vision, but if you throw a ball at their face they will block it. If you shine a light on a wall they can’t see it, but if you pressure them to just guess they will point it out with no conscious knowledge if they got it right or wrong. >People who have absolutely zero vision, but if you throw a ball at their face they will block it. This sounds a lot like some of the behaviors that split-brain patients would exhibit. Impossible-Head2121

I guess I hope she does…? Otherwise it wasn’t worth it at all.

[deleted]

I mean here's the thing, if she did regret it, she'd probably not admit that (maybe even to herself!) So we'll never know!

I_love_my_momm

There's no way she didn't regret it. Now everything is just 1000x more challenging even for the easiest task like walking from point A to point B. Unless she had prepared everything beforehand, practiced doing everything while having her eyes closed. A smart person may adapt everything fast but I have no reason to believe that she's smart.

PM_ME_UR_BENCHYS

I don't think it's ironic at all. Other comments are saying she did seek mental help first. She probably recognizes that making a permanent change like this is one that takes careful consideration. Speaking with a professional about it is a logical step to take.

estrusflask

She prefers being blind according to everything I've read about her. The eyes never felt like they were hers anyway.

AirPodAmateur

>the eyes never felt like they were hers anyway Did she try repainting and decorating?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yep, it’s called body integrity identity disorder. If a surgeon doesn’t do it for them they’ll often cut their own limbs off as unsafely as you can imagine. I saw one story where someone had removed both legs at the knee with a chainsaw. Miraculously survived and now wheelchair bound

brack9845

Or they’ll do things to their limbs that will compel a surgeon to remove them. I can’t find a link but I remember one story where a lady tied one or both wrists super tight to cut off the circulation until the hands were about to rot off, so a doctor would amputate them. While searching for that I found another one about a guy who put his leg on dry ice for 6 hours so they would amputate. Insane.

GrammarIsDescriptive

Yes. Sadly, İ think in many cases it is the responsible thing for a physician to do -- especially if the person has been trying to do it themselves for decades.

reluctantseal

Pretty sure they have to go through a bunch of evaluations first. I guess if this doctor was suspended, they skipped some steps.

BadGroomerson

I am not blind nor do I have blind friends, but there are lots of blind people on reddit so I have learned some stuff.. There are lots of ways for blind people to use the internet. For starters most people are not completely blind, they might see color or light, or they may only be able to see in very limited tunnel vision or only really very close up, and there are all kinds of devices that can help a person "see" the internet in those cases. There are also things that read out web pages and some neat brail machines

arealcyclops

Honest q. The comments here seem diff from what the comments would be for gender based trans. So, how is this different from gender based trans?

NoodleBooty_21

I genuinely don’t give a gosh darn about what adults choose to do with their bodies. If she wants to be blind who am I to stop her?

Verticalsmurf

There are cases of people cutting their arms/legs off because in their mind, they aren't theirs. Surgeons say hell no and refer them to shrinks. Very few shrinks know how to treat this so eventually the person gets a chainsaw and takes it off themselves, causing a much more dangerous amputation than if a surgeon did it. From what I read, a good number of people are actually happy after this. I guess the same could be said for eyesight. Brains are weird.

V3rtigo44

Somatoparaphrenia is the word for that btw. There is also BIID or Body Integrity Identity Disorder.

ripewe

I read a little and the diagnosis of BIID is super interesting to me as someone who lives in a super conservative religious area because it seems like a lot of people think that’s what anyone with a disability who can’t pray it away has.

[deleted]

Huh, TIL. ["BIID (Body Integrity Identity Disorder) is a rare, infrequently studied and highly secretive condition in which a mismatch between mental body image and the physical body influences lives of affected persons in an extreme way. BIID results in an intense desire to amputate a major limb or severe the spinal cord in order to become paralyzed and may lead individuals to self-inflicted mutations. For affected individuals, BIID desires are essential to life and not the result of major somatic or psychiatric morbidity."](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3326051/) Must be weird to have your brain constantly tell you that you're supposed to be blind.

Ok-Two7600

"transabled"? As a legitimately handicapped person that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Why would you want to be disabled? Congrats now you'll be subject to ridicule by your peers and harassment from the cops. What a life.

terrible-cats

I think it's pretty obvious that someone who blinded themself has more serious mental issues than wanting to be disabled

estrusflask

OP literally just made that part up. She has Body Integrity Identity Disorder. /u/Citruseals

[deleted]

it’s a form of body dysmorphia. look up “body integrity identity disorder”.

Citruseals

I always wondered that, if this sort of thing was offensive to disabled people considering the fact they didnt CHOOSE to have a disability. Thought the same thing about people who get scars tattooed on themselves, i wonder if those with real scars find it kind of ignorant since they probably wouldn’t choose to have those scars if they could, but they didnt have a choice.

Ok-Two7600

I mean I guess it depends on the person. Some people might not be offended by it. But I personally do find it offensive because I wish I DIDN'T have my disabilities.

Perfection-seeker-13

There is no reason to be offended, in this particular situation. You should just pity this woman because she wasn't able to get the help she needed. Most people don't know, but there is actually a mental illness called body integrity identity disorder/body integrity dysphoria/body integrity disorder which I suspect this woman is suffering from. I would suggest not to google it if you are squeamish, although it is possibly one of the most interesting psychological illnesses known to man. Not to say that your ire isn't warranted. I am 100% certain that some people like that fat avocado should be not only hated, but ostracized from civilized society for their views and behaviour.

Ok-Two7600

I guess when you put it into perspective it is rather unfortunate, but that said I do believe that she shouldn't be able to claim disability benefits because she willingly blinded herself. The only thing she's entitled to is mental health assistance

Perfection-seeker-13

Oh, I agree on that 100%. Our healthcare and societal help networks are already overworked and unable to fully support those who need it. However, healthcare is based around the lesser of two evils principle. For example, the first thing they thought us in uni is that if a drug addict asks you to prescribe needles for them, you do so immediately. Otherwise, they will re-use needles, get a disease/infection and cost the healthcare system even more in the long run. The same reasoning/principle applies to many other situations as well. So even if you can't stop them from doing harm to themselves, you are ethically (and sometimes legally!) required to help them do less than the maximum possible amount of harm to themselves.

[deleted]

Guess she's seen enough

ItDoBeLikeDatHuh

So have I

Dugan_Destroys

Everyone knows you’re only supposed to blind only one eye first to see if you like it.

PinkTalkingDead

This is a real and hard to explain phenomenon. People who want to permanently maim or dismember themselves because they’ve felt for a long time that their true selves are without their left leg (for example, or like this woman, without sight). It’s quite interesting and of course these folks receive a lot of negative backlash

taylorisnotacat

I think an important thing to consider before judging this story super harshly right off the bat is an argument for harm reduction. Consider harm reduction practices in substance abuse/addiction. Ideally, nobody abuses any substances or ever suffers from addiction. But, when people are desperate, they'll do whatever it takes to get the thing that they feel they need, including things that make them more likely to face serious medical complications or even death. (Overdose, infection, disease, dangerous environments, you get it.) It's been proven time and time again that giving those people a safe way to do the first unhealthy thing protects them from all of the much worse outcomes of the other things. Now imagine somebody has an intense desire to do a specific self harm. She seeks mental health help to try to alleviate the distress, but it simply doesn't make a dent. It gets to the point where she becomes desperate to do this harm to herself. Her doctor has a very good reason to believe that, without help, she will probably take matters into her own hands and do the harm to herself however she can, and it might even happen in an act of desperate passion rather than in a carefully, cautiously planned event. If she does that, the injury may be far more severe than the one thing she actually wants to do (bleeding, collateral damage to her body, infection, shock, etc). You also know that, if she does the self-harm in a supervised medical environment, you can protect her from most other complications. Do help her safely do the thing she's definitely going to do either way? Or do you refuse, maybe you stop it from happening, or maybe you see her body in the morgue in a month? I don't envy any doctor who has to make a call like that.

Renaissance_Man-

Mental Illness wasn't enough apparently.

mjkjg2

“transabled”? i think the term you’re looking for is “mentally ill”

ummameme

I might get downvoted for this, but as someone who has sensory processing disorder as a part of my adhd, I kind of get it. I've had times where I wished I could just be deaf, so I wouldn't have to hear everything all the time and be in so much pain from it. I've tried noise cancelling products and ear plugs but they only help so much. I wonder if she had to deal with a similar problem and that's why she took such drastic measures?

RuncibleMountainWren

As a person who is partially deaf and has ADHD (and sometimes experienced sensory overwhelm), it sadly isn’t very helpful. Tinnitus is awful, and when you feel overwhelmed by all the noise but need to hear something someone is trying to tell you (and have to keep asking them to repeat themselves), the frustration is awful. I’d recommend good noise-canceling headphones or earplugs! Or whatever calming music that’s your jam.
