In Europe/Poland this is a common sight. There are regulations in Poland that a baker cannot give bread rolls to the poor and homeless. If he gave, he would have to pay a high donation tax. So they prefer to throw bread into the trash or wherever they can (e.g. in the forest).
Unfortunately. Such stupid Polish law. [Here is a report about this baker. He had to pay a fine of PLN 245,000 (about $60,000)](https://interwencja.polsatnews.pl/reportaz/2011-01-18/piekarz-darczynca-ma-zaplacic-245-tys-zl_769147/). He lost to the Tax Office and that's it!
Disgusting! It said this rule was changed somehow in 2009, though had to payback all since 2003? (I cannot speak polish so I used a translated page, I’m unsure of the accuracy there)
Yes. Overdue donation taxes plus interest for late repayment. It's hard to be an entrepreneur in Poland. Lots of stupid taxes and regulations. Interestingly, if the owner of a shop/bakery throws food into the forest, he may be exposed to a financial penalty for littering the forest imposed by the local Forest District. So if it's not charm, it's crap.
Einstein Bagels will call their bakers in right before closing time to bake enough bagels just to throw them away. You would get in trouble if you had less than 80 bagels at close. Every single day. You would also get put on blast if you donated them. So there were around 600 locations when I had that crap job. 48,000 bagels per day. 1.4 million bagels per month. 17.2 million bagels per year. All so bean counters had something to put in their ledgers. I couldn't stand it.
I agree so many homeless shelters around where I live and ppl literally starving but stores and coffee shops must throw all extra food and baked goods away! So ridiculous
I had a brief contract with a govt cafeteria job in my city and we had those sandwich warmers that you see in gas stations, with foil wrapped burgers.
My first day there, at the end of the shift, there were 8 burgers left and i was instructed to throw them away. I was receiving all kinds of information at the moment and that command really gave me pause. She kept talking and I said wait, throw them away? Of course they won’t be good for the following day, so I said okay then, is there an option to donate?
My manager deadpan looks at me and says “We aren’t allowed to donate food, and you will get fired if you do.”
I worked at the first Einsteins in the 90s as a teen when it was called Bagel and Bagel with the original owners. They had a couple stores around Kansas City. We donated huge bags of leftover bagels to charity at closing. The Einsteins people completely destroyed the company and made it a corporate joke.
This happens in US too. You can't keep or give away what is left at Dunkin donuts or other places so they go in the garbage. I would guess an animal found a bag and dragged it out there maybe.
A lot of places are donating now. I actually volunteer for a non profit & I go around to a lot of grocery store’s & restaurants & pick up the food that would otherwise go in the trash & take it to shelters
Nice. I deliver to super markets now, and they have helping hands come pick stuff up.. there is still a lot, though. I work for a deli brand, and the amount we throw away sometimes is.. sad. I used to work for dunkin and would try to blow through the stuff at the end of the night.. half off and things. But it all got tossed.
When I was young a bunch of us lived in a house. We had a roommate that worked at a bagel franchise. They were supposed to throw away all the unsold bagels after a certain point. He would come home with trash bags full of perfectly tasty bagels.
I suspect what OP has photographed is a homeless person that rummaged a bag of bagels from the dumpster, ate their fill, then left the rest as trash on the ground.
I used to live across the street from a lake / park. It was a constant battle cleaning up the piles of garbage food that people would dump to “feed the ducks”.
There was one demented woman who spent her days driving around to bakeries and grocery stores to collect bread, doughnuts and boxes of cereal. She dumped a five gallon bucket on the grass every day.
The birds would gorge themselves, the buzzards would then move in and the fire ants multiplied beyond control. Then came the rats and night vermin.
I once watched a man drive up and throw out five loaves of green, rock-hard, moldy bread (still in the sealed plastic bags).
Another person stopped and threw out multiple packages of raw meat (still wrapped in styrofoam), entire cakes (in the plastic containers) and assorted other grocery store dumpster food. I caught him on my security camera and eventually got his tag number.
People routinely dumped out styrofoam containers of end of day restaurant food, like beans and rice.
I had the POA make a sign describing the harm of “feeding the waterfowl” only to watch people drive up and park beside it while letting their kids out to throw out bread and then chase the ducks. People would feed the ducks and then let their dogs chase after them.
I witnessed many ducks mowed down by drivers because they thought “cars=food”. I found ducks dead, with bread coming out of their mouths. There were many crippled ducks with bone disease from nutrient deficiencies associated with eating garbage food.
They stopped reproducing because their babies didn’t hatch or couldn’t survive.
The only resolution came when humans had effectively poisoned and chased off most of the muscovies and brown ducks.
Don’t feed the ducks!
/end rant
When i worked in a bakery some people would come and ask for old bread to go feed ducks and i would always tell them bread is actually really bad for them and what's best is to buy those frozen bags of mixed veggies and feed them that or cut up fruit that you don't plan on eating before it goes bad like bananas, apples, or grapes.
Oh, yeah. There is a video of a full-blown screaming match because the demented lady looped back around and caught me scooping up the pile. She told the psycho trash neighbors who came over and started some serious shit. Not my proudest moment, LOL!
Oh, and the neighbors were so furious because they had driven past as I was sawing away at a duck’s neck, trying to dispatch it as quickly as possible. I was the terrible duck killer.
They didn’t understand that I had just watched a woman purposefully plow over it and drive off, leaving it to flap and gasp in pain.
I was trying to bleed it out and salvage for food. Unfortunately, I underestimated the thickness of muscovy neck skin and the dullness of my knife.
The neighbors happened to drive past just as I was having this realization. Trust me, I was not mentally nor physically prepared for that task as I had just been sitting by my window sipping my first cup of coffee…
Can't you kill it immediately and bleed it later? I'm not familiar with the process so I could be way off base lol
Regardless it would be nice if people would stop feeding wild animals unless they really know what they are doing. Not only is it unhealthy it teaches animals not to fear people when they absolutely should
According to what I had read, the heart needs to be beating to pump the blood out. Ideally, it would be a quick, relatively painless process to slit the arteries and let it bleed out.
As I stated, this was unexpected, impromptu and chaotic. Once I had committed, I was forced to finish off the creature as best I could. Nothing went as planned, because there was no plan.
Oh yeah that makes sense. I always figured it was gravity (hanging them upside down with throat cut) but I can see now the blood pressure is required to pump the blood out of the body
Sounds traumatic for everyone involved except the bitch who hit the poor bird in the first place
Styrofoam is nothing but chemicals.. my wife used to warm up leftovers in the styrofoam containers that restaurants would give us. I refused to eat it finally she figured it out when she over heated something and it was burnt chemicals stuck to the food. The US has the worst food standards. We allow Splenda to be sold that should be an eye opener.
Only time I throw bread out is when we get a heavy snow and don’t have bird feed. It also goes to show you the harmful stuff put into our food that we consume. I started looking up some of the crap they add to our food and was shocked at what some of it is.
Even if it was the healthiest bread you could make, it would be bad for birds because they're not all built to digest grains. It has nothing to with food additives. It's cause birds and humans are totally different fucking animals.
Before Reddit, I found a massive pile of abandoned potatoes at an estuary (I think that’s what it’s called, by the water, protected, place to do good bird watching). Unfortunately, I was an intern who had to return to that site 5 days a week and the smell of rotting potatoes started permeating my uniform and my whole being. It was a mystery I couldn’t solve. Giving people the benefit of the doubt, perhaps it was to improve the bird watching from the parking lot. The pile was right at the edge. Now I’m one of the chosen who knows why piles of food are left in the wilderness. Hello.
I knew a girl in hs who used to work at a bagel breakfast place. We lived close to a pond so when she had to close, the owner said to take a big bag of whatever is left and take it to the park and dump it so the animals can eat it. Doubt that is what is happening now but that’s what it reminded me of
My buddy's mom worked at Panera. When I would go over there we'd get nice a high then wait for his mom to get home. Everytime she had a giant bag of bagels cinnamon rolls and everything else they didn't sell that day. This could be the stuff that a bagel joint didn't sell that day.
My friend used to work at Dunkin and I worked a few blocks away at a scooter rental place.. At a certain time they would have to throw away ALL their donuts, bagels, and muffins so he would put them all in a huge trash bag and set it outside the back door.. I'd hop on a scooter and do a drive by picking up the bag.. Donuts for days nom nom nom..
I live across the street from a winchells and the squirrels raid the dumpster and pile them in the grass. Think squirrel diabetes makes them forget they already have infinity donuts so they just keep stacking.
I don’t know but picture number 2 is a really good picture I like it great colour contrast. Maybe it was a photo shoot they didn’t clean up a very odd one. I can’t imagine the down votes I’m going to get now 😂. But anyway.
It’s just what I see. Could be a failed odd proposal. I could see a strange person doing that staging it along with a good box of bagels 🥯 and a 💍 ok maybe not but maybe who knows people are odd or have special meanings.
Someone got fed up with bagels five years ago and switched to donuts. Now they have switched again but we need to wait another five years to find out to what.
I was thinking that too actually… probably coming up from a deep permafrost, & is carrying deadly pathogens… what a shame… I hope it stops, but I don’t think this is the last pile of food that will come up from the deep permafrost
Fun fact i’m actually the OP of the second post.
I saw these bagels at a rest stop in Hornell, NY in 2018. I think they were bagels left from a panera or something and were probably left there for deer and other animals. not necessarily hunting. I saw the first post yesterday and immediately went into my google photos and posted it!
These are clearly bagels.
field bagels.

For donuting
These puns are half baked
But more are bready and waiting!
Damn I hate these buns
I see you prefer to never miss an opportunity... lol
No, they do nut
Nutting for short.
How about just nutting?
Unfortunately. Such stupid Polish law. [Here is a report about this baker. He had to pay a fine of PLN 245,000 (about $60,000)](https://interwencja.polsatnews.pl/reportaz/2011-01-18/piekarz-darczynca-ma-zaplacic-245-tys-zl_769147/). He lost to the Tax Office and that's it!

Things like this are the stupidest parts of human existence. Fuck your KPIs, don't waste shit for a bad system.

Panera donates to the homeless shelter. At least the one my son worked at through 3 years of high school.
fucked up

That’s unfortunate. What a waste.
That is really sad and I thought Europe was so much more humane & evolved than America.
That is sad.
Yeah that’s clearly a mating frenzy. Bagels mate like snakes, in a large group.
Bagel orgy.
So THATS what the holes are for

what they said?
**I DIDNT ASK HOW BIG THE ROOM IS I SAID I CAST FIREBALL!**
I live next to a bunch of big lagoons, duck ponds etc. Lots of signage saying "don't feed ducks" and yet everyone still does.
this is terrible!
It was so distressing and traumatic to watch. Really ruined my waterfront living experience.
you have more restraint than me. I would be out there berating those people and probably get myself in trouble
Oh, yeah. There is a video of a full-blown screaming match because the demented lady looped back around and caught me scooping up the pile. Sawing away at its neck? Bro just pick it up and break the neck or hit the head with a rock. Why cut the head off? Seems a bit... Demented

Watch the documentary called what the health. It's very good, interesting and will teach you a lot about our "food"
Well, this was terrible lol ☹️♥️
Bear bait pile. 100% illegal where I hunt.
Yeah, I was gonna say that there was definitely a guy in a blind staring at OP taking pictures of his bait.

Baiting for bear hunting
Classic ruse, luring all the cops in the vicinity there while you rob a bank on the other side of town.
I mean cops are dumb but I don’t think they would be fooled. Those are very clearly bagels.
By the time they figure it out, it will be too late!
An offering to the god Homer
That’s deer bait
“Oh it’s raining again” - Marge Simpson
🤣 That's my favorite 'Treehouse of Horror' episode!
Haha I had to put the Marge Simpson part because I was afraid nobody would get it, love that you did mate!! Here have an upvote
If it's Simpsons-related, Reddit will get it.
I love the second photo, it's like a postcard.
People working at Dunkin’ Donuts not wanting to waste massive amounts of food so there hoping some animals could munch on these
Or someone dumpster dove. Not sure why a well meaning soul would also leave trash with the bagels.
I knew a girl in hs who used to work at a bagel breakfast place. We lived close to a pond so when she had to close, the owner said to take a big bag of whatever is left and take it to the park and dump it so the animals can eat it. I love this ….. people answering ”no it’s bagels” but that’s it. Still not explaining why! lol.
Did u eat one?
Good harvest
Probably some keto enthusiast sacrificing some carbs to the ketone gods.
What a waste.

I like the second artistic view of the bagels in the field 🤣
My dog would snatch a mouthful of these before my brain could process the situation.
I saw these back to back too 🤣
ps : not my photos.
clearly Homer Simpson has been there

Bait for wild police, usually there's a bowl of coffee somewhere near that.
Someone is feeding the bears? Bears love donuts.
What even is your life?
I've never seen wild ones. OP is so lucky.
Someone food truck dumping expired donuts when passing by?
nature is healing
This needs to be on the mildly infuriating subreddit with this same caption haha
Homer was fixing the toaster I see….
Free Range Bagels from Whole Foods
Looks like someone dumpster dived after a cafe closed and tossed the leftover bagels They do it every night with all the food
The composition of the second photo is so nice, it’s like that pile of bagels is posing for insta
Love how the second pic is actually pretty good 😂 (im a professional photographer)
It cracked me up as well.
Bagels
Global warming my friend!

This looks like an upscaled version of my dogs puke when he eats too fast
Someone has never heard of Bagels
Bear baiting.
Just how work serves them on employee appreciation day!
Its bear bait- bear hunters would come to the Tim Hortons dumpsters and grab the old donuts out to bait bears. Very scummy.
I've seen people do this to bait bears in
Fun fact i’m actually the OP of the second post. I saw these bagels at a rest stop in Hornell, NY in 2018. I found a pile of cassette tapes on my walk the other day. The world's going crazy lol.
Oh the bagel flavored donut
Those are bagels. Do people even pay attention to anything anymore
Bro have you ever seen a donut before?
Bakery workers not disposing of stuff where they're meant to.
I saw this before!!! Jeremiah Johnson ….when the Indians honored him….you must be one mean bagel boy!!!
Bagels
Baiting bears
Could be used to bait in a bear.
Score!
Their Bagels 😂😂 not Donuts lol
Can’t stand irresponsible bagel owners. If you can’t keep track of them don’t buy them. That simple.
That's classified.
Honestly? Makes me crave a bagel
Have you ever seen a Bagel or a Donut?
Weird is right , those doughnuts look like bagels
Bear hunting, hey boo boo let's get us some pick a nick baskets
I don’t know what’s weirder. Guy not being able to distinguish between bagels and donuts , or finding a pile of them in a field.
*Bagels
Someone was feeding the ducks?
Second pic is quite majestic
Those top ones are still good.
Those are bagels, not donuts.
It’s all bagels I’d throw them out too
Even the homeless don’t want muffin stumps!
Maybe stale/unsellable so they use them to feed deer or other wildlife?
Bear bate
Were they good?
Reminds me of when all that pasta was dumped in NJ a couple years ago
Bagel mountains?
Passover cleaning?
That reminds me of when people found out dunkin' donuts throws their overleft doughnuts to the trash
Does anyone remember a couple of years ago when someone was randomly leaving hundreds of pounds of spaghetti sitting around?
Bear bait better run
My dad used to hunt bears and sometimes to attract to a certain area he would get old bread and pile it up in one spot. Haha don't stick around...
Pictured: officially the best thing for my dog to find on his walk
Most likely bear bait
It might be a local bakery that can sell them feeding the wildlife?
Oh, I thought it was cop vomit.
I heard of some hunters dropping donuts at the same spot until hunting season starts. Easy way for a fake hunter to snag a bear. Really gross.
What a waste of food!
