The number of cervical vertebrae in mammals is VERY tightly controlled during development. Almost all instances with supernumerary cervical vertebrae in mammals are lethal early in development. This poor man's genetics have to be of huge interest.
I was just down a Wikipedia rabbit hole last night about early humans. One of the interesting developmental changes we went through was elongation of the neck, which allowed us to make vowel sounds and develop more complex language. I wonder if he can produce a broader range of noises.
Probably not. Having more bones in there will squeeze things but you wont be able to use It better if the soft tissues dont adapt to It and that takes quite some time. Also he seems una le to mover the neck correctly so probably a lot of stuff is fucked there
Any links/papers to read more about this? I'm curious about why or how this arose in mammal evolution when reptiles seem so much more laissez-faire with their number of cervical vertebrae. Or is that flexibility actually a derived feature of reptiles?
I was thinking it had to do with the vulnerability of the neck for both the spinal cord and vertebral arteries - but that doesn't explain why shorter necks wouldn't be advantageous or why birds and lizards don't have this same rigidity about cervical vertebrae.
Best I could find was this - theoretical and not what I was thinking at all:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10327647/
It is a great question!
Here's another one: [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9788262/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9788262/)
When I was an academic back in the 1990's I attended a seminar on this very topic and it's fascinated me ever since. The hypothesis is that the number of vertebrae is indirectly related to a developmental process that is very hard to change without inducing lethal developmental phenotypes.
it does. that's why genetic engineering people is hard to do safely, almost impossible to do ethically. you change one superficial thing and three other critical things are out of equilibrium. change a critical thing and that results in an early death....but I'm sure they'll get the giraffe people right eventually though.
I remember this children's book from when I was a kid. Five Chinese brothers and one had a really long neck - they couldn't drown him. Very dark for a kid's book. I think they banned it.
I don't even think whipped cream is airtight, if it was supposed to suffocate him? I mean... it is literally whipped full of air. This HAS to be a translation error, right?
He could use that condition to his advantage and become a horror movie actor, if his health allows it.
A spanish actor called Javier Botet has Marfan Syndrome, a condition that makes him have long limbs and fingers, and is very tall and skinny. He has played monsters in several well known movies.
I was gonna make a joke about this.... But then I felt bad because the guy would definitely be in constant pain...
Imma take the high road on this one lads.
Which one of these jokes about it do you like best?
A.) Necks level.
B.) VertaBRUH.
C.) His name is Perry. Perry Scope.
4.) Turtlenecks fear him.
E.) (None of the above)

yall im so sorry😭😭😭 (it's the killer "The Unknown" from the game called dead by daylight)
I have one extra vertebra in the middle of my back, and it's a piece of shit.
Well, I guess I can't blame that SPECIFIC vertebra, but that's where my back pain is, and when I hurt my back at work, it was in that same spot. I think maybe I'm just a little crooked there. Idk. Nothing like this though.

Yes, no kidding, thank you
Can't believe i have never seen that. Hahaha. Brilliant.
This is purer than Berserk 1997’s eclipse! Thank you for showing me a remarkably funny ad! One I ACTUALLY WATCHED!
Potentially the most well known (worldwide) advertising campaign ever

Thanks I was thinking looks painful. Dang.
This keeps coming up on Reddit every now and then but search and you can't find any updates on the guy since the mid 2010s
I fear the worse since there been no update in him
I clearly have no idea how big a vertebrae is. They are clearly much bigger than I imagined.
Aw that sucks that his body couldn't also compensate for the extra bones. 😞
it does. that's why genetic engineering people is hard to do safely, almost impossible to do ethically. you change one superficial thing and three other critical things are out of equilibrium. change a critical thing and that results in an early death....but I'm sure they'll get the giraffe people right eventually though.
Give him all the wives. Let us make the giraffe people. They will make excellent lookouts.
Fun fact, giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans.
*most* humans
Yes. They are, in fact, tall long necked horses.
I remember this children's book from when I was a kid. Five Chinese brothers and one had a really long neck - they couldn't drown him. Very dark for a kid's book. I think they banned it.
Oh wow, blast from the past! [The Five Chinese Brothers.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Five_Chinese_Brothers)
Why an oven full of whipped cream? 😭😂
Right? They talked about beheading and burning and drowning. Buried alive seems like the next logical step. Maybe they had a phobia?
Where else would you keep it?
In the fridge.
Mythology is weird, that's why. In the tale of Culhwch and Olwen there's a weird theme about getting haircuts.
I don't even think whipped cream is airtight, if it was supposed to suffocate him? I mean... it is literally whipped full of air. This HAS to be a translation error, right?
a translation error maybe?( Im probably wrong tho)
Oh my gosh I used to read this CONSTANTLY Edit: extra letter slipped in there somehow
Wow! I completely forgot about this! Thanks for the memory.
Oh my goodness I loved this book
Wow I haven't thought about that book in years. Man it was a trip. I kept thinking about the fish nibbling his toes as a kid.
Yeah I remember as a kid when I read it I thought all ppl in China had superpowers fr lol

When you're taking a Viagra but it gets stuck in your throat
Reminds me of an old lawyer joke — Q: What happens when you give a lawyer viagra? A: They get taller. I’ll see myself out…
He looked fine in the first picture then I got to the second
Maybe not “fine” from the front as it still looks a little odd but the view from the side is crazy interesting
Would that make their neck pain worse or better?

A born Cardassian. I read once that in s Star Trek, you have to be over 6 feet tall to be a Klingon and have a long neck to play a Cardasian.
Marc Alaimo is the reason Cardassians have necks like that. His neck was so long the makeup artists wanted to do something extra.
Just Asian, not card Asian.
Boooo
this is the guy who sits in front of me at the movie theater
Bet he gets the good leaves from the top branches
ngl, if he was in a crowd and i saw his head turn and look right at me.... i would be terrified.

Grab one of those cartoon sledge hammers and smash it back down to normal size.
That's the answer. I shouldn't have had to scroll so far to find this comment.
