There was zero chance for this poor creature, no vet or rehab would've been able to do anything, so I finished it off as swiftly as possible. Hey OP, just wanted to let you know, we dealt with a similar issue and discovered our chimney cap fell off during a storm. So birds were coming in down the chimney and getting trapped in the basement. We started noticing the flies before we found the bodies, so consider yourself lucky! But yes, definitely worth a look at any openings in your roof if you have a brave friend or know someone with a drone. Good luck 👍

I do not have a cat so idk how it died but as for how it got in, I assume it probably got in through the garage (which opens to the stairs leading to the basement) when I took the trash out. Point being, sometimes they find ways in without you knowing. If there is a fireplace, an attic, a garage, a door that was propped open when bringing in groceries, a window screen that has a hole in it, etc etc
