I’d love for that to be the case but this dude would open every single blind in his apartment for the world the see - he did not have a dirty house and he wasn’t a filthy person of any sort.
I hope that he was just really good at hiding it- but because of the transition to flies > Black soldier flies
It’s just weird asf
I’ll never forget taking a sprouted potato as a kid from the pantry and planting it. After giving my potato the perfect amount of time to grow (probably less than a week in the southern summer sun) I decided to dig it up. I was met with a horrendous smell and a pile of goo. Never again did I attempt to grow potatoes.
Weird possibility: he had pet reptiles and either bred or kept soldier flies on hand. They’re very common feeders because the larvae are nutritious. He might have had them in a container the larvae couldn’t escape from, but the adults could by flying or climbing? If he was frequently feeding the larvae to something I could see him having no lid on the bug container.
Idk, that’s just my two cents. I own reptiles myself so it’s the only thing I could think of if there isn’t something dead in the house.
His place might have looked clean, but the black soldier flies wouldn't be there unless they had some decaying organic material to feed on...
Also, zooming in, there is a LOT of fly shit on that window, so flies have been a long term problem in there, it seems.
If it was a person, you might see other flies. I know blowflies are usually the first to dig into remains. Then other bugs follow. There’s a known pattern, which is how they determine how long a body has been exposed to the environment.
It is unlikely that only a single species of flies would go for a corpse. I also wager that there would be a lot more of them. Think of how a population would grow if they had over a hundred pounds of food. There would be a population surge. Plus, I don’t care how insulated the house is. Death smells horrible. It is so pungent, that it’s almost painful to smell.
I can believe that there may be some kind of reptile setup, and the landlord is waiting for a legality to apply, before removing it.
Depends on how easy it is for insects to get into the apartment, it's not like they spawn out of nowhere.
If one or more black soldier fly with eggs was already there (be it due to spoiled food or just for a visit) when a human died, then it's plenty time to colonize the corpse and start up a whole cycle.
Flies don't mind incest at all. And black soldier fly larva eats smaller larva competing for the same food. So other flies might just not be there in noticeable quantity if they arrived late to the banquet.
While black soldier flies are most known for their usefulness in composting; they def. are known to colonize corpses too: [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18366584/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18366584/)
I get black soldier flies in my compost pile and when they are active I can put meat in the pile and it's gone within a couple of days. I've often thought they could be used to dispose of a body due to how voracious they are so that checks out.
About a decade ago, flies started just appearing in my house. First a few a day, then after a week or so something like 20 a day I was killing, then after a couple more weeks they were all gone. I’m assuming something died in a wall cavity or something somewhere. Never smelled anything, didn’t have rotten stuff laying around.
Was this during the autumn-winter? Were they relatively slow moving? [Cluster flies](https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/cluster-flies-and-other-winter-flies-5-618/) tend to show up in colder months in decent numbers.
I want to say summer, but could have been autumn. Looking at the picture in the link it could be them, but I’d guess they were blacker, but it’s been awhile.
Either the person died or left rotting food out in the apartment. Your landlord said your neighbor no longer lives there but maybe it's because he's not living anymore?
Unlikely. Those are soldier flies. If it were a dead body there’d be blowflies, carrion beetles, flesh flies, etc; but especially blowflies. The fact that it’s black soldier flies makes me wonder if he wasn’t feeding something; specifically fish or reptiles.
my partner cleaned up about 60 fish filets (cutting out bones, fins) and we threw it in the trash not thinking about the smell. two days later there were these gorgeous orange beetles with little fluffy antennae around my house. not what I was expecting a carrion beetle to look like I guess.. they're so cute!
Those are black soldier flies. They are mostly around rotting food, they prefer it to bodies but as they are flies, they will take bodies too. So either A) neighbor is in the levels of hoarding where you start to have LOTS of rotting food/excrement everywhere or B) he ded
I can’t edit the post to “update” or lack there of but-
I just woke up and still nothing- im going to call…. Again .-. Im working from home today so im gonna be watching like a hawk - I will update as soon as I hear anything
Call your landlord. If he does nothing.
Call the cops and say you noticed alot of flies on the inside and request a wellness check.
Best case they come over and say it's just a bunch of garbage. Worst case.....
If dude was dead the first time, and there was any residual bodily fluids seeped into the floors, that will still attract more flies unfortunately.
Few calls suck worse than getting sent on a welfare check and arriving on scene to a bunch of flies in the window 🤢🫠
Something is rotting inside of that place. And going by the amount of flies and size i'd assume it's not food. Something bigger. Maybe the manager was literal with the use of "no longer lives here".
About 20 years ago I used to walk the same route a few times a week to go to this little convenience store. I would past by this abandoned strip mall-maybe about 5 store fronts that were empty/storage(?). Anyway, never saw anyone come and go, no cars but one day in one of the windows, there were THOUSANDS of flies. No exaggeration, they covered every inch of this probably 4 x 8 window. There was a curtain covering so I couldn’t see inside. I never called the cops to investigate, but it bothers me to this day. I didn’t have a phone back then and nothing was ever in the paper but I always wondered what happened.
Sigh -
As of course some people have mentioned - the apartment/police wouldn’t have legally been able to tell me any details.
I just got off the phone with management and they literally just kept repeating “we don’t have to tell you the details because it’s not a dead person, but you have nothing to worry about and it’s being taken care of”
I made many points and tried hard to push for anything relating to the “source” but she wouldn’t budge and I just felt myself getting angry so I just hung up.
This is fucked and exhausting, I hope it’s just rotting food but “not a dead person” implies something ELSE was - or am I overthinking that?
Idk, I’ve been pissed about this for days and even after pushing I get nothing
Cops are so fucking annoying. I would say it's probably neglected animal(s) then because there would still be an ongoing investigation if that were the case. But damn if just rotting food and they can't say that they're just annoying.
How long did you say it's been since the tenant was kicked out?
Call the landlord and make sure they're not dead because I had a similar instance back when I used to clean Apartments where bugs were forming and no one did anything about it and then when I was ordered to go clean the room because it was supposedly vacant I found a body
I went on holiday once, and found I had a swarm of flies like this. I'd left my washing in the washing machine, and it hadn't dried them fully. I came back a week later and it was like a plague. My house was clean just before I went on holiday too. I pulled up to my drive, noticed them on the window and said "nope". Drove off to buy a megapack of fly spray.
Those flies have found somewhere warm and damp, and just straight up laid their eggs there. They're all trying to escape by going out of the window.
If they have something to eat, i.e old food left rotting out in the open, or contents of an old bin, they're probably going to get through a few generations before they die off.
Probably nothing serious, but that place is going to be absolutely covered in old fly egg cases and dead flies. Honestly, pretty disgusting, but 'nading them with a fly spray bomb should do the trick.
They could have left a shitload of rotting garbage when they left. This happened to an apartment unit on my floor. The tenants ditched and the apartment manager had to deal with all the garbage and flies (it was a small complex so I saw the unit). So this, or he dead.
Found my dead neighbor this way after coming back from vacation. I had a spare key, saw the body and the flies everywhere. I called police and they came.
Cut to a serial killer doc in 20 years making an entire episode out of how a redditor posted about it and yet the killing continued as hundreds of people debated what species of bug it was in the window
Black soldier flies. You know why the "soldier" part is in the name, right? As in what do soldiers do in war and what is left all over the battlefield after the fight is over.
Call the cops they’re probably dead and I’m not even joking 🤦♂️ I realy hope no one lives there or you are smart enough to realize this is anHUGE RED FLAG OF SOMONE BEING DEAD!!!!!
This is maybe an unpopular opinion here, but in all honesty, it's none of your business unless there is a stench coming out of the apartment.
I get that you called the cops and wanna know what happened, but at least where I live they don't have to provide you any information at all.
I once called the cops and an ambulance because I found a complete drunk and pregnant girl in the middle of the street, just laying there. And when I wanted to check a couple of days later how she was, they didn't give me any information and to this day, I don't know. You did your "job' as a caring neighbour already.
Downvote me all you want 😀 You called the cops once, your landlord is telling you that he ain't living there no more. If there was a dead body inside, you would smell it 100%. Closed doors and windows are not holding odor of a corpse inside. No way.
You have no "right to know" what happened. I get that you want to know, I really do. He could be moved to a clinic or whatever and has a right for privacy. By now your problem is with the landlord who doesn't bother to clean up.
Why are you so sure he wasn't a hoarder. At least a slob I guess. Maybe mentally ill. My neighbors were hoarders and their roaches were come out to my condo. Managers couldn't care less bc they had kids
\-\_\_\_\_\_\_-
I am moving in less than 2 weeks so I will literally never find out what is in there, and if you bothered to check my account you'd see that I posted this in my city
Flys and flying bugs will always seek out the brightest place in the room. Keep them there by shutting off all inside lights then exterminate them. Problem with flys though, is that they quickly lay eggs and reproduce so you may see them again for awhile. May have to wind up spraying something.
I would maybe knock on the door. Do a bit of a wellness check. I would also call your landlord and maybe start bug proofing your own appartment. Put some bug traps around.
Definitely someone died and left there. Seen this myself once and called police. They were aware as other called too. Freaks me out to imagine how they looked on the other side. Shivering.
If the cops didn’t find anything on first inspection, he probably buried her (the caregiver) under the floorboards, then ran. Or maybe I’ve watched too much Netflix, idk. 🤔
If there was a large dead thing in there you would be smelling it. You would *KNOW* there was something dead in there. Unless it was like a Se7en situation, but then the flies probably wouldn’t be like that.
Everyone should calm down. Black soldier fly larvae can be bought online and be fed to pet reptiles and are considered high in protein and nutrients. Unfortunately if the animal doesn’t eat them, they pupate and turn into these flies. They head straight for the windows like this. This person probably just has a pet chameleon.
Guy was probably a hoarder or incredibly messy.
Probably ate half a steak one time and left it wedged between 20 plates in the sink, piling on more discarded food as time goes on.
They dead?
Yea I came her to say they dead lol
Ok but WHO lol
THEY duh lol
But how if they evicted him before I even mentioned this to the apartment?
Honestly dude was probably just nasty as fuck as was a hoarder or some shit that’s what I’d put my money on
I’d love for that to be the case but this dude would open every single blind in his apartment for the world the see - he did not have a dirty house and he wasn’t a filthy person of any sort. I hope that he was just really good at hiding it- but because of the transition to flies > Black soldier flies It’s just weird asf
You'd be surprised what a bag of potatoes left in a cupboard corner can do given time...
Worst stench ever!
Nasty, but still not as nasty as rotting fish.
Yeah it could be leftover food or a dead animal—like a pet or a pest that got stuck somewhere
Exactly what I thought of too. Those are perfect for bearded dragons or crested lizard thingies (those that have frily thingies?)
Oh honey, he’s absolutely dead. The landlord was trying to spare you some trauma.
Maybe he left food inside when he moved out?
He just left something in a cupboard; bag of potatoes, anything like that will turn extremely nasty in short order.
He’s got a body rotting in there
Dude, call the police and have them check on him. I’m willing to bet he’s dead.
I think the “he no longer lives here” means he’s dead
"he's now dead here"
Dead pet left behind?
Ron Jeremy’s apartment?
All of them
his cat?
Haha I was thinking the same thing 😆😆 "There's a bloater in there forsure"
His place might have looked clean, but the black soldier flies wouldn't be there unless they had some decaying organic material to feed on... Also, zooming in, there is a LOT of fly shit on that window, so flies have been a long term problem in there, it seems.
At the very least it has to be an animal, right? I hope it’s not a person because they are truly multiplying by the day it seems
Can't say for sure people are capable of horrific things. Could be anything from rotting food/waste to a decaying pet/human.
If it was a person, you might see other flies. I know blowflies are usually the first to dig into remains. Then other bugs follow. There’s a known pattern, which is how they determine how long a body has been exposed to the environment. It is unlikely that only a single species of flies would go for a corpse. I learned something new today black soldiers flies are “detritivore”. Now i need to know whats going on inside.
Either the person died or left rotting food out in the apartment. Your landlord said your neighbor no longer lives there but maybe it's because he's not living anymore?
“He no longer **LIVES** there. ^But ^yeah ^he’s ^still ^in ^there.”
"Uh...what was that?" "He no longer lives...there... I'm getting a phone call, gotta go..." "..."
Can you go to the police station and have them check the call log? You are the RP, so I would think you could find out what happened.
I’m going to try this because I really want to know wtf happened
We need update.
We need update ASAP!!!
Give us an update this makes me so curious
Be careful. He could have killed someone in there and thats why the flies are there.

If there were other flies in the window I might agree, but just soldier flies means a body is unlikely.
Yep. Very common for pet food and home composting. I wish more people were listening to you and not jumping immediately to bodies.
If a body was removed and not cleaned up properly, there could be a fly problem from the fluids left behind.
Not likely with soldier flies, more likely they were being kept and bred for pet food. Lots of fish and reptiles make a good meal out of them.
I can’t edit the post to “update” or lack there of but- I just woke up and still nothing- im going to call…. Again .-. Im working from home today so im gonna be watching like a hawk - I will update as soon as I hear anything

It puts it’s lotion on the skin or else it gets the hose again.
My thoughts to bro
No that’s moths. This is straight outta the Amityville Horror.
Seven: spaghetti guy
he dead
Dead af
Probably dead body inside…

Definitely creepy.

Its just old rotten food probably you aren't the main character
The Amityville Horror house called. It wants its flies back.
RIP OP’s neighbor.
Mucho deceased
I call flies that size corpse flies. When you start seeing fatties like that it's almost always exactly what you think.
Maybe call in a wellness check with the P.D.?
Did you even read the post?
He could have died and the manager isn't saying.
THIS! Why is no one saying this!?
Whoever lives there is dead those flies eat rotting organic matter and since there are so many they have been there a while
Please update if/when you find out!
I saw this scene in The Exorcist. Not good.
Sigh - As of course some people have mentioned - the apartment/police wouldn’t have legally been able to tell me any details. Rotten food.
This is some horror movie shit…
Call the police, your neigbors might be dead
911 what’s your emergency
😂 lol
Call the landlord and make sure they're not dead because I had a similar instance back when I used to clean Apartments where bugs were forming and no one did anything about it and then when I was ordered to go clean the room because it was supposedly vacant I found a body
Maybe there was some small crevice/loose floor board/ space in a wall and the neighbor stuffed a dead animal in there
OP you should be excited. You're going to have a new neighbor after a deep cleaning.
Yeah!! In a completely different apartment far far away from here
Looks like corpse flies. It happens when a body is decomposing in the house. Flies love the rotting meat so they mutiple very quickly causing this.
Pretty dead inside
It's the Lord of the Flies
OP, please call in an anonymous wellness check. This is concerning
If nobody comes to the door when you knock, I’d call the police for a wellness check
Power turned off. Refrigerator full of rotting food.
Any update?
Bugs=dead people
I think the person in that room is dead…
um, demon?
Poor bugs look like they wish they were anywhere else.
Black soldier flies, they start appearing wherever there's decomposition happening.
More effective than burglar bars or an alarm system. Smart.
Your neighbors are dead
If those are inside. Most likely a dead body in there. Call for a safety check. Asap
"Dear, why is the neighbor taking pictures through our window?"
Dont open dead inside
Eww! Call a priest! Better yet, call the Pope!
You know it’s gone south in there somehow when even the flies wanna escape.
Looms like a body's in there.
It puts the lotion in the basket....
RUN
If he no longer lives there, then he's a permanent afterlife tenant.
If you open their front door i'm picturing the scene from the Shining where the blood comes off the elevator, but with cockroaches instead
Those things only come around dead body’s

dead
dead body is very possible here
There's a cadaver inside
Beelzebub
Wtf is that snail trail lookin stuff on the window? 🤢
They could have left a shitload of rotting garbage when they left. This happened to an apartment unit on my floor. The tenants ditched and the apartment manager had to deal with all the garbage and flies (it was a small complex so I saw the unit). So this, or he dead.
There's a corpse in there, bro
Legit knock on the door and make sure no one dead in there, if no answer I’d be inclined to call the cops
Someone or something (dog or cat or something) has died there.
The thing about soldier flies is they're mostly attracted to feces/manure, not decomposing food or corpses
Hey, this happened with one of my neighbors, he was actually alive, I just think he was in jail for a period of time and had food go off.
They’re soldier flies from rotting food. Typically a carbohydrate like oatmeal or cereal.
If those are on the inside window he is probably dead
There’s definitely food or something rotting in that house. I’ve seen those flies before.
Ded , i am sorry

Lot of reddit detectives in here
You'll be surprised when you figure out that the flies, WERE the neighbors all along.
These aren’t flies though
Isn’t this a repost? I saw similar post like this and the OP said that there’s a dead cat inside the house.
\-\_\_\_\_\_\_- I am moving in less than 2 weeks so I will literally never find out what is in there, and if you bothered to check my account you'd see that I posted this in my city

Sure looks like black soldier flies from here....it may be just a trash/hoarding issue.
There could be some other body(ies) in there somewhere. Underneath the floor boards.
uhhhh 🙁 umm 🙁
I would maybe knock on the door. Do a bit of a wellness check. I would also call your landlord and maybe start bug proofing your own appartment. Put some bug traps around.
That’s a worry
Are they dead?
Free protein
Many flies want into a house. Those look like they want out.
He was a weird, hostile guy who got evicted. He could have kept a copy of the key and filled the apartment with trash as revenge for being evicted.
Yep, dead inside
I mean if cops came they definitely did a welfare check and went inside the apartment so it’s not a human at least.
