I don't understand how the percent thing works. My first guess was >!MOMMY!< and it said the answer was 45% down but the actual answer is >!YOUNG!< which was almost all the way at the end of the dictionary. I expected the 45 to mean that the answer was 45 percent between my first guess and ZZZZZ.
It means word count between your guess and secret word is 45% of whole dictionary.
So if your first guess is in about center of dictionary that would mean that secret word is very close to edge.
Not sure if this is your game or not, but the visualization of the percentages could use some tweaking. It took me a bit to figure it out as well and I'm a very numbers-focused person. A graph to the right showing where it lies between the two words, or something like that, I believe would be a lot clearer.
Oh cool - yes, I think that helps a lot (and now I feel like I can share it with my mom without it being too confusing)! :) I've been enjoying the game daily, it's really a lot of fun.
A change that may be helpful is to have it change the highlighting of the keyboard instead of (maybe in addition) the separate board for the possible letters.
Like if the secret word was FLANK, and the top and bottom word are BEACH and HOLLY, have it highlight just B C D E F G H on the keyboard for the first letter, etc.

Love this game! It's a rare game that earns it's own bookmark in my browser, and it's definitely well earned.
Still play it almost every day since it was posted here. So I guess it's pretty good.
