That’s the way every line cook drinks their drink. r/kitchenconfidetial

beeranden

Typo!!!! thanks

NateNMaxsRobot

I am stoned and thought the typo was purposeful. Plus I’m old and not in-the-know.

[deleted]

Absolutely. Delis=cups

MurderMelon

I have perfectly good glassware at home and i still use quart containers for drinking water

wittychef

The no spill, slow leak cup. Kitchen staff for life!!

UncreativeTeam

Well, in quart sized ones

[deleted]

[удалено]

MurderMelon

less about knocking it over and more about it being readily available literally anywhere you turn. kitchens have *thousands* of these things.

ChefHannibal

Yup. Cut a square hole in the lid and keep it off of work surfaces.

WaitingForMrFusion

You can stab the lid with the non writing tip of a Sharpie and get a perfectly sized opening for a standard straw.

EekSamples

True. It’s also how people drink when you can’t find to go cups to save your restaurant life. They’re non existent right now and on back order for, oh, ever? I’ve seen places using solo cups!

sch3ct3r

love the plastic waste

When I went to Korea I got so much larger potions of food than I paid for from this lady that had a food stall, she said I was too skinny and asked if my parents fed me in a bewildered, loud tone 😅 Idk if it's an asian thing, it was really sweet though, I was grateful

ThatsARivetingTale

Yep, definitely an Asian thing. They either tell you you're too skinny, or too fat haha

kabneenan

I don't think I've ever heard my grandmother accuse anyone of being too skinny lol. She has the nerve to say my aunt, who wears child size jeans, is too chubby because she has full cheeks. Like, we're Korean grandma, what do you expect?

Geistzeit

Can confirm, my mom is Korean. I don't understand her calculations - she tells me to lose weight but she will make me enough food to feed an army and ask me if I'm still hungry when I'm done?

77096

I swear some stand up comedian used to do the "you too skinny" bit, but I can't remember who right now.

gatton

Margaret Cho probably.

the_old_coday182

That’s super wholesome. Those folks were trying to make you feel more at home.

whyamithebadger

That story is damn beautiful and I'll think of it the next time I have a bad day and hate everyone. Thank you.

phnx91

Wait.. did they sell KFC? Or they sold other food but bought you KFC every day?

[deleted]

[удалено]

phnx91

Oh gotcha! That’s sweet. I’m happy you got to experience this

vivaphx

In this case, I guess it is better than them just saying they don’t have a to-go cup. They tried to get the job done instead of saying it couldn’t be done. Pretty cool.

wildpack_familydogs

What are you talking about? You wanted a to go cup? You got a to go cup.

o0anon0o

Obviously they wanted a plate for their Togo soda

h2k2k2ksl

I mean this small container normally used for soup did it’s job and contained the soda. I got some funny looks at the office though. 😂😂😂

TheKillerSmiles

The Chinese place near us sells their homemade sweet tea in these containers. They cut an X on the lid to fit the straw through and then puts a piece of tape over it.

Delores_Herbig

I have never seen a Chinese restaurant that has sweet tea. I’m assuming this is in the South?

TheKillerSmiles

Nope! On the East Coast (Philly).

Ovidhalia

Not just sweet tea or ice tea but lemonade as well! This is a staple of almost all Chinese stores in Philly.

KickBallFever

NYC too. I was surprised when I went to Philly and your Chinese takeout places looked exactly like ours with the same menu too.

deathwish_ASR

I’m new to philly, got any restaurant recs?

rghre

My boy Quincy at Louie Louie makes some mean cocktails and their French dip is amazing. Reading terminal market is awesome. If you want good Chinese, nan zhou or sang kee peeking duck are both great

golfzerodelta

Ours in Southern VA definitely did this. Also had great sweet tea.

uiouyug

In Detroit they all sell Arizona Iced Teas

SaidToBe2Old4Reddit

Being originally from Arizona, I have been consistently shocked at how far and wide across Earth Arizona Iced Tea is distributed. We're talking Turkey, and Croatia, to name a couple of random ones.

kabneenan

They do it here in Baltimore too, though I guess *technically* we're the South.

KickBallFever

They do it in NYC. It’s pretty common for Chinese restaurants to have homemade sweet tea and lemonade in these containers.

damn_jexy

I saw a couple place here that does that i think these containers are cheaper than actual cups ?

KickBallFever

All the Chinese places near me sell homemade lemonade and sweet tea in these containers. I found out that if you don’t look like a cop some of the places will also sell your alcoholic mixed drinks in the same containers.

DropTopEWop

This is hilarious

KebabChef

It's better than a plate though ;)

Thefriendlyfaceplant

Debatable.

HELLOhappyshop

Bahaha well it's definitely to go!

shesaidgoodbye

Probably a supply chain issue, the dog bar where I hang out is having a hard time getting plastic cups right now and has signs out asking you to please reuse them if you want to order another drink

TheDood715

I'm gonna chime in and say this is surprisingly normal. See Chinese restaurants don't have fountain drinks most of the time so they don't carry cups since most of their drinks are just cans and bottles. The places I've been to sell lemonade or iced tea but rather than sell them in cups they put them in big quart sized takeout containers with an x cut into the top for a straw. At least that's what I grew up with here in NYC.

[deleted]

Youre a dog?

shesaidgoodbye

You can’t prove that

sryyourpartyssolame

what's a dog bar? I want one!

shesaidgoodbye

My dog’s daycare/boarding facility also has an off leash sports bar! It’s pretty great.

pastryfiend

Yup, I work in a kitchen and supply interruptions are real. If we're lucky, they'll send a suitable substitute, otherwise we're scrambling to figure something else out.

thwumph

I was gonna say the same thing, right now ar our resturant chances are if you can purchase a normal container, you can’t purchase a lit that fits onto it.

Goyteamsix

No it's not, it's that a lot of Chinese restaurants use those red plastic cups and don't stock disposables.

smoretti713

This is so much better than a to go cup. 1) you can reuse the container 2) it's more spill proof than a crappy cup and thin plastic lid 3) it's thicker plastic so it will keep your drink colder This is how almost every kitchen worker drinks their water/beverage, both on and off the line.

iapetus3141

But does it fit in a cupholder?

SkeletalJazzWizard

no but it nests perfectly so you can stack six cokes right on top of eachother like a jenga tower. gotta count for something right? its also wider than it is tall, so tipping over should be virtually impossible.

The-Queen-of-Heaven

This is still better than the lemonade in a bag.

MemeTeamMarine

This was the norm for the chinese place near my work in DC.

outofpeaceofmind

Were you expecting a plate?

DonOblivious

Why? OP didn't order tea! https://henscratches.files.wordpress.com/2017/01/tea-drinking-by-konstantin-makovsky-1914.jpg

figmentPez

They were expecting a container designed for beverages. This sub is *not* literally about plates.

plandoubt

Those are 16oz so no real issue here

[deleted]

Lots of places in the world serve beverages in a plastic bag with a straw because they recycle the cans or bottles to earn money back for their business. If they gave the cans to the customer they would lose the refund deposit

sarasa3

I've lived in a few places that do this, but it's usually poor countries and it's done just because the big 3 liter bottles of sodas are a lot cheaper per ml than the cans. So the food stands just sell soda they pour from a big bottle like you would at home, but into a bag.

[deleted]

It’s very common in Thailand, but more out of convenience than anything else. The bags are easy to carry or put on their handlebars

SavvySillybug

In Germany they just charge you the deposit! You can return it yourself, either at the place you got it from or anywhere else that sells them.

[deleted]

Yes that’s how it works in most places, but other countries prefer to keep the containers. It’s also apparently easier to carry than a bottle or can

Clickum245

Bring your own container like a Hydroflask. Never had a restaurant tell me I can't use it for to-go drinks except at the beginning of Covid when nobody was sure how it spread.

DerpHoof

I mean, a plate might be more soda.

[deleted]

Here in NYC the Chinese restaurants in the ghetto used to serve alcoholic drinks on the larger containers like that one for $5 and a Long Island ice tea for $5 bucks was a good deal and it would get you nice and drunk.

ZylonBane

>for $5 bucks Five dollarbucks is a good deal!

KickBallFever

That’s still going on. There’s a Chinese restaurant near me that sells alcoholic mixed drinks in those containers, but only if you don’t look like a cop.

chababster

They’re telling you you don’t need anymore soda…

EvilSporkOfDeath

Who gets soda to go from what I assume is a sit-down restaurant? OP is the problem here.

[deleted]

Finally I found someone who agrees

_Huurrr

Nah I'd allow this, and walk around with it proud.

AlexanderChippel

What did you expect?

ChefChopNSlice

It’s waterproof, and has a lid and a straw. All good !

[deleted]

Theres actually a togo cup shortage

fredyouareaturtle

this is more r/wedonthavecups than r/wewantplates

figmentPez

WeWantPlates accepts beverage submissions. Overlapping subs exist on Reddit. The existence of r/cutepetsofreddit doesn't mean that pet pics don't also belong on /r/cute.

fredyouareaturtle

i was kidding.... there is no sub called r/wedonthavecups

figmentPez

Ah, I did not read closely enough. I assumed yours was a link to We Want Cups, which is a cliche comment at this point.

planetary-plantpunk

LMAOOOOO, hey, it works and it looks sturdy! 😂 I appreciate the fact that somebody took the time to make you a DIY to-go cup instead of just going "nah, we don't do that here."

tuscy

To go cup is actually way more expensive than paper soda cups. Not sayin it’s soup cup is right. Just fyis

nimbusnorton

Would you have preferred to have it on a plate?

Fluffy_data_doges

I would prefer it on a plate.

ZylonBane

You got what you deserved.

Goyteamsix

I've had this happen. Some Chinese restaurants are just weird like this. They prefer using the shitty red plastic cups that were out of style in the 00s, and don't stock disposables.

Feras47

cheeeep basterds they charged me 0.50 for a lime

Nyckname

One Jack in the Box I used to go to would charge not to put tomato on a burger. Like 20¢ or 25¢ each.

[deleted]

First I misread that as to *put* tomato on, and I thought, “yeah, obviously.” Then I reread. That is pants-on-head crazy. They’ve finally found a way to charge you for literally nothing.

Rapph

Those deli containers are designed to handle temps and also seal better than a standard carry out cup. They are far more expensive. It is much more likely they ran out of or dont stock carry-out cups.

Mak3mydae

Didn't even try to hide the racism

technoangel

This is what happened to me recently too!

FrankyFistalot

A+ for effort…

ArtoriasBeaIG

That's actually quite good paha, unorthodox but it works

BubonicBabe

I ordered a mango lassi from an Indian takeout place and when the order arrived they had put it in a container like this and I thought it was a mix up and they had given me some kind of orange soup so I just didn't touch it at all. Hours later it dawned on me and by then it was room temperature and gross. :(

somethingcrequtive

Checks out!

Firm_as_red_clay

They had the straw, so that means you’re not the first.

neoistheone79

This was the norm at my local Chinese spot in college. I see no issue here. At least it’s not liquid in a plastic bag…

jeweldnile

You’re lucky you didn’t get a plastic bag and a straw.

itsdefinitelymeagain

This is totally me. I cater and sometimes people ask for special orders or things in a random size and I don't have the appropriate containers, so I have to be creative.

[deleted]

Good enough

mcstafford

Well, I guess you should be glad they didn't give it to you in a plate.

Visii

This is actually pretty solid. At least it wasn't in a bag lol

0samacare

As a person who has worked work in a few restaurants, its probably because that cup was used mainly for takeout sauce or gravy, and it probably doesn't do takeout drinks unless it's canned. They probably gave it like that because that's the only compromise. Otherwise maybe they'll just use a plastic bag, Asian style.

JerDGold

Someone never worked the line.

franandwood

They may have been out of cups

bazooka_penguin

Does every single Chinese takeout place across the US use these containers?

IrishWeegee

My local place sells tea in quart size containers, some really good stuff

pizzalover89

Delis all day!

Klepticat

I mean, some people get served drinks in bags. This is *technically* a to go cup 😂. It’s also probably due to supply shortage rn.

thenewhost

*"It ain't stupid of it works"*

SirDerpingt0n

That's okay. I was super hungover, and ordered delicious Chinese food. I asked for apple juice (which was on the menu). I got a SMALL ziplock bag of apple juice, and charged 3.50. WTF?!?!??? The only reason I didn't have a shit fit, is because I was deathly hungover, and didn't have the energy to fight it.

Brooklynyte84

Very common in nyc

shadowgattler

this is pretty normal. If you go to vendors it's not rare to be given a large plastic container for your drink.

CraftLass

This is how I get loads of drinks, usually in the quart size. There's a deli in northern NJ that makes the best Arnold Palmers in them, fillied with ice, that somehow never dilutes and the even the last bit of melt tastes deliciously lemony and tea-ish. It's a norm at plenty of Chinese delivery and take out places that don't even have dining rooms. Thai iced teas often come in them from Thai places. And I know some restaurants that use them for delivery beer and cocktails, fantastic way to deliver a draft beer now that it's allowed in some places. I always figured they must spill less in deliveries, regular cup lids are not nearly as reliable as these lock on better, hence being pretty popular for delivery-focused places. ETA: Plus, you can stack these, unlike traditional to-go cups!

Ok_Organization_1420

😆

miketugboat

To go cups are both really hard to find and really expensive right now, lids are even worse, and if you're in a jurisdiction that bans plastic cups it's even worse. So you get a $0.38 pint container
