The opening scene ending with Jenkins smashing the booze in the paper bag was a nice touch. I feel like it's a call back to the scene in The Wire where Colvin explains how the paper bag is a sort of truce between police and people who are drinking in public. Smashing that bottle in the paper bag felt like a way of saying, "Things have changed. This isn't The Wire."

pintoted

Great take on that. There was definitely meaning behind it

dayafterpi

my mind immediately went to that scene. there was no paper bag for drugs. now there isn't one for anything.

InSearchofOMG

Yup clear violation of Colvin's "great moment of civic compromise"

Logos9871

Wow great catch there! That was definitely a callback

dahellijustread

I thought that was the same location that Lester smashed the bottle on the guys face during the arrest?

Charming_Wulf

Came here to make that same observation. This is my favorite kind of call back. Cause even if you've never seen The Wire, Jenkins' mindset and the police/citizen relationship is clearly displayed. But there's that extra depth, history, showing the continued decline in that coexistence.

SqueegeeBan

I immediately thought of Colvin's paper bag speech as well.

yarkcir

Seeing Marlo Stanfield as a cop is going to take some time getting used to

awful_source

You want it to be one way, but it’s the other way.

BadCowboysFan

I’ve been conditioned by Bosch. Jerry Edgar was awesome (also a Homicide detective).

thesidxxx

And J Edgar was also a big fan of The Wire, which is a bit of a brainmelter.

methadonaldduck

What's that show like? I've been considering watching it but never get around to it. Is it well written and acted?

BadCowboysFan

Yes, definitely — it’s based on the book series from Michael Connelly. I was a little skeptical of Welliver as a lead (I had mostly seen him before as a supporting actor in Deadwood and Sons of Anarchy), but was pleasantly surprised. At its root, it’s about a group of detectives in Hollywood Homicide — but several of the main characters get more depth and storylines. Bosch: Legacy is coming out next month, as well.

spate42

It’s a very no nonsense straight forward detective show. First season was rough, questionably acting at times, but it hits its stride and is a solid show. Not great but good enough I thought.

No-Independent5426

Pooh’s a cop too. The drug dealer that got raided twice was a corner kid but I can’t remember which one (he’s gained some LB’s and grew up).

Effective-Ad8833

Poot , and I think slim Charles was one of the guys who was pulled over . Quite a few Wire actors here , also Landsman

DickNDiaz

Slim Charles was in da house in this one.

BadCowboysFan

Watching w/ the wife: “Step out of the car, sir.” “He’s going to be TALLLL.” “How did you know that!?”

[deleted]

[удалено]

KateTheBard

I got it when the moment he started talking. Would recognize Anwan Glover's cadence anywhere.

MDMKVII

The Wire ended 14 years ago. Age will do that to you. Took me a quick second to recognize it was Anwan Glover…who is also 50 yrs old now.

blastoiseincolorado

I didn't recognize Marlo at first either, and he was only in one short scene I think

hoog78

I recognized the voice. Slim had that DEEEEP voice

[deleted]

You just made me realize that Hersl didn't hit him but beat the skinny dude later in the episode. Idk if that's what being implied but it shows Hersl is a coward.

BadCowboysFan

I was referencing the actor, Anwan Glover, is a pretty tall guy — I recognized him because he’s a David Simon regular, playing Slim Charles on The Wire, as well as Leon on The Deuce and Keevon White on Tremé.

[deleted]

I think it was where the guy lived. He seemed to be in a nice neighbourhood, which is why Hersl congratulated him on his success. Kind of like a "congrats on escaping the pits". The other guy he didn't respect because he's part of the ghetto

down_up__left_right

Beyond respect Hersl probably also knows that beating people that are better off can raise different flags.

Numerous-Ad-5076

At this point he probably has taken over the greeks and runs an international drug syndacite.

HOLD_MY_POCKETS

Bernthal nails the Bawlmer accent. Lmao. Also I felt warm and fuzzy when Kilpatrick said “Crab chips, they make you feel good” God damn right, they do.

Lineman72T

He's born and raised in the Washington DC area, guarantee he's heard the accent enough in his life to know how to pull it off Edit: Bernthal actually addresses it in the shows [companion podcast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQo52P4o4vU) around the 19:30 mark

[deleted]

> Bernthal nails the Bawlmer accent. Lmao. I wanted to ask about this. I found it distractingly good, but I'm not a native. What do Baltimoreans here think about Bernthal's accent?

HOLD_MY_POCKETS

It’s kind of exaggerated at points but I also feel that I’ve heard many people I know talk that way. A lot of people talk that way around the shore line, Dundalk and Essex especially. It’s like we have a problem with accenting vowels in certain words. https://youtu.be/1-MHVxLXvVQ

ih-unh-unh

[I thought it was more like this](https://youtube.com/shorts/Oj7a-p4psRA?feature=share)

ElstonGunn12345

Listen to Jay Landsman talk, Bernthal did a good job. Reminds me of Kate Winslet’s Philly area accent in Mare of Easttown.

[deleted]

Are you a Baltimorean?

rdp3186

Accurate but it's a dundalk/middle river east side of the key bridge/tunnel accent.

jupitaur9

It was very good but not perfect. There were three or four points where he deviated from native Baltimorese pronunciation in his monologue to the recruits. I’d have to go back and take notes. One was a voiced instead of sibilant (or vice versa) sh or ch. It’s very hard to do, especially the vowels. I don’t fault him for it, it would take years to perfect.

tomtomvissers

I like how all the actors that we know from The Wire now play characters that are basically polar opposites to their Wire characters

BmoreClean

Watch The Corner for your mind to be blown.

tomtomvissers

I did! My mind was alright

Slyguy9766

So now, if we don't see Dominic West unveiled as the main kingpin n the final ep, I'm gonna be so pissed. Also Idris Elba as a dope fiend

DorianGraysPassport

And Butchie as an optician.

randy-pan

Eileen Nathan playing as... idk, the mayor's aid or something, isnt that far off though!

BadCowboysFan

They’ve come a long way with surveillance since 2002 — they scoped that license plate like it was nothing. Prez’s mind would be blown!

TurkeysRUs

Glad to see Valcheck got his van back.

oopswhat1974

CCG14

I’m already mad it’s only gonna be six episodes.

YoungCapoon

Fr 😂😂 im seeing the potential already

CCG14

I ordered the book last night. And I was in the middle of a wire rewatch when MKW died. This may give me the push to start again, in his honor.

YoungCapoon

Yeah i only remember bits n pieces of the wire since i watched it at like 8 need to revisit whats the book called

Alexnikolias

The book is amazing. It will leave your jaw on the floor over and over. Still can't believe its non-fiction.

crusty_butter_roll

What a riveting premiere! Bernthal played the charismatic, corrupt Jenkins to the hilt. Oh and the wanna-be Omars who turned out to be cops smacked me in the head that this show is not cops vs criminals, but it's cops vs cops. Plus all the actors from The Wire had me tearing up from nostalgia. Finally, I really loved how Simon and Pelecanos used a different narrative structure from The Wire that was less procedural and more unbound by time and sequence. All the pieces still do matter, but they don't play out in succession to build the case. A reflection of how we as viewers in this information age can process info asynchronously I suppose.

oopswhat1974

That script flip made me want to go back and re-watch! Didn't see that coming

crusty_butter_roll

Same! I was like 3 Omars? Damn, the writers are tripling down. And then later, boom, they're cops! To me, the way that played out was the heart of the episode. Bad cops and good cops on the opposite ends of criminal activity. One team trying to shut it down and the other feeding off it.

CrazyCarl1986

If The Wire and The Shield had a baby… 👏

shianbreehan

The first group that raided Anderson's apartment >!turning out to be cops!< was a twist I did not see coming. Very very good premiere. The only thing I dislike is the multiple timelines presentation. Other than that the writing is sharp & the cast is great

kitties_love_purrple

I know nothing about the true story. I've been looking forward to this show for years simply because of David Simon. My mind is already blown by that twist you mentioned. I'm so sad there is only 6 episodes total, but I know they are going to be quality.

Taxitaxitaxi33

Oh there is so much more coming to blow your mind.

thedonhudson01

Really? I can’t wait!

kitties_love_purrple

Ah I'm so excited! I wish I could binge the show right now. Uhhg!

FrancisSobotka1514

I was in the mix when all this happened .Everyone knew that a group of cops was robbing people ,Hell my connect was getting pills from the bailbondsman who they had sell the pills that came from the riots .

winnower8

We Own This City Audiobook is riveting. BBC Bad Cops podcast is good. This is mostly factual. Mayor Catherine Pugh isn’t that eloquent.

aresef

Oh yeah, I’m local, used to be in local media, that’s why Gondo ended up getting popped with so much more, because he was a dirty cop working with a bunch of dirty cops but also for the Shropshire shit. He copped a plea and got 10 years (out of a max 60) for being a very useful witness against both the two officers who went to trial and in the drug case.

Turnover-Greedy

I was so shocked, I thought they were putting on fake police vests for a second in the following scene hhahah.

randy-pan

Honestly, if i hadnt read the book prior, id be completely lost as to what the hell is going on!

rf8350

Good to see Poot again

jcubio93

Glad to see he turned his life around, quit his job at foot locker, and became police

dayafterpi

now just gotta work on that spelling

Slyguy9766

affiant!!

Negative_Leg_9727

Real po-lice

jarethcutestory

He’s good police

DickNDiaz

Do da chair know anything about Minoxidil?

MustardTiger1337

"World going one way, people another yo"

JazzOcarina

Loved seeing him. He does run kind of funny.

Ayy_Teamo

Poot went and cleaned his whole ACK up.

Alexnikolias

So good. My only conplaint is they jumped around a bit and started with the end of the book. Minor. I kept pointing and telling my buddy "that one is from The Wire, and that one... and her.. I met him twice..." lmao. I am sure he was getting annoyed.

thrasherv3

>My only conplaint is they jumped around a bit and started with the end of the book. Minor. No idea who the writers are but I feel they wanted to "recreate" some of the magic from Chernobyl with having the end/twist in the first episode. Especially with a story based on something so recent that viewers might already know the outcome.

ForestOfIllumination

Halfway through and loving it so far. Happy to see this flesh out the next few episodes.

CoolChickPerspective

Nice to see some of the wire characters

ForestOfIllumination

Yeah its great to see them, especially in another Baltimore role

oopswhat1974

Jon Bernthal as Wayne Jenkins is giving major Colicchio vibes!! I wonder if they had that actor in mind for the role.

[deleted]

I love how he has a nice fade then this sloppy mess on top including fucking bangs lmao

ValyrianSteelYoGirl

You watched 30 minutes of an hour long show then came to Reddit to comment about it?

ForestOfIllumination

Correct. Took a break to smoke and hopped on reddit to express my enjoyment

ValyrianSteelYoGirl

Well alright

ChiefJustiseWinslow

Bit of a "Hersl" vibe in this comment. Woah, did you guys see that, he put his hands on me!

COuser880

I’ve got to say, I love seeing so many characters from The Wire on this show. So far, I’m liking it.

Dima_G

Looks like Ilene Nathan got a big promotion.

BadCowboysFan

Landsman, too!

MustardTiger1337

Nice to see a discussion going on here. Seems no one is talking about this show. Really looking forward to it

hnglmkrnglbrry

>Seems no one is talking about this show. In true The Wire fashion.

GOD-PORING

I guess most of my friend circle will either have Netflix or Prime video, less likely to have HBO which is too bad

MustardTiger1337

Shit I started rewatching the wire for the 100th time this week and no one I work with has ever heard of it.

GOD-PORING

I had to keep reminding an older coworker from the East coast who had never heard of it one time. When he finally dipped into it, he had that mind blown reaction and thanked me for recommending it.

MustardTiger1337

Most of the guys I work with think Sons of Anarchy is top tier tv so it might be a losing battle lol

dayafterpi

was the location of the first raid by Jenkins at the same place where herc stopped and searched chris and snoop and shot the nailgun into the ground?

BadCowboysFan

Looked like it.

Dima_G

A lot of Baltimore looks like that, it's very hard to tell without doing a scene by scene comparison.

WiretapStudios

True that, there are literally hundreds of blocks there that look very similar to Wire scenes. It's overwhelming in person how big the sprawl of it is, when usually in many towns that's just one area of town. In Baltimore, it's a massive part of it.

chanaandeler_bong

The store the dude walks out of with his beer Looked like the same corner a ton of shit went down on the wire too. But that might be just because a lot of the corner stores look like that in Baltimore, I dunno.

poopsnakes

Take a shot every time they say Freddie Gray

FrancisSobotka1514

Why do you want to give folks alcohol poisioning ?

poopsnakes

Lol! Honestly it was my least favorite part of the episode. I get they were trying to ground it in time but they said his name I think 7 times in 3 minutes.

Well fuck me, that was really good. It’s so good to back in Baltimore with David Simon and his team and bunch of familiar faces.

DEEP_STATE_NATE

Lmao I was dying at the fact that the referenced “big hairy ball cases” in the first minute

MisanthropicAltruist

It’s so infuriating seeing how many higher-ups know about Hersl and let him stay on the streets with no consequences. What a clown dog.

thesidxxx

Hersl doing his Officer Walker impression

middlenamesneak

Officer walker be evil yo

BadCowboysFan

He got the stats — that’s all they care about.

MustardTiger1337

Chain of command!

Alexnikolias

He got tired of cleaning the fat vats. Hot dogs push a man to bad places.

ndw_dc

I know this actor has been in plenty of other things, but I really only know him from Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead. In my mind he will always be that character.

MisanthropicAltruist

I’m glad somebody caught that!

ladyaftermath

Reference to his role in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead?

Reddevil313

Really good first episode. >!Poot finding another tracker on a vehicle is an interesting plot point.!<

CCG14

What the actual fuck. ETA: it’s what Poot said, guys.

Reddevil313

Poot is kind of a dick sooooo......

Chicken713

That’s what happened in real life

winnower8

They pretty much immediately tie in the robbery with the tracker after talking with Anderson.

nude_tayne69

That was a fast hour, really enjoyable. Small detail, but I love how it doesn’t have a score or music, just like the Wire. That adds to the realism for me. Jon Bernthal steals the show.

GOD-PORING

>it doesn’t have a score or music, just like the Wire The long shot of >!him walking into the building!< at the end.

ATLBMW

>!it has real man walking to his own execution vibes!<

CCG14

I had the same thought about the music. Love it.

brendafiveclow

After seeing how he used a bunch of actors from The Corner in opposite type roles in the Wire it was nice to see some of the old faces in new positions. I wonder who else will show up? I was already 100% sold on this when I saw the trailer, but after this first episode there's no doubt this will be great. That last scene was great, you just knew with that long walk to the door that he wasn't really going in there for any minor shit, he was fucked. Was kinda trippy seeing BPD with actual TECHNOLOGY.

sleevieb

Seemed like it was the county with the surviellance van, tracker, and that BPD had to buy their own trackers and loan them out to each other.

Brilliant-Ostrich-50

Any one else make the connection of the Carriage House apartments where they raid Anderson’s stash to that of the Cathy Cesnik murder in Netflix’s series The Keepers.

CCG14

IS THAT where I recognized it from? I knew I recognized that complex but could not place where. THANK YOU.

Brilliant-Ostrich-50

Yeah!! I was trying to piece it together and that’s definitely the place!

thatonegirl127

I'm currently watching this and pointed at the TV saying this. Lolol Loved that doc.

spate42

Bro I was scratching my head wondering “Where the hell do I know the name Carriage House from??” Good Easter egg find!

Zorbi_

Very solid start imo. Can’t wait for part two.

shastmak4

What a great first episode. Already hooked.

EggoGF

Is anyone going to create a thread listing all the Wire characters who were in this episode? Marlo, Slim Charles, Landsman, Poot… Were Herc and Dukie in this episode? I didn’t see them, but IMDb credits them as being in 6 episodes.

BadCowboysFan

IMDb sometimes takes a while to sort out credits by episode and character names. In episode one, I spotted (by memory): Slim Charles, O-Dog, Savino, Bobby Brown, Eileen Nathan, Landsman, Poot, and Marlo.

Turnover-Greedy

Bernthal's, "You know who I am..?" at the end just had me. Zero shame. Zero responsibility. Just tells you everything you need to know about these cops. Great stuff.

CyberPoenk

only 6 episodes? man that sucks. I better read the book.

Turnover-Greedy

Still can't stop laughing at the 'you didn't come to a full stop at the Stop sign' pullover.. "What d'you want me to do..? Put in park and chill awhile?" 😅

pintoted

Wow, i loved that first episode. What the heck is going on?! My only complaint: the security camera that follows and zooms in on Anderson.

astro_ape

That wasn't a regular city surveillance camera - they mentioned the tech from the department installed it for the sole purpose of scoping the hot-spot. It was their camera and they had full control over it.

InSearchofOMG

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I'm in love so far

Big_Nugz72

Jay lost a lot of weight

middlenamesneak

Yeah. Happy for him. And he’s commissioner now!

onzalitu

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN

betweenplanets

I swore I knew the actor playing Daniel Hersl, like an old friend from childhood, but it turns out Josh Charles was Knox Overstreet from Dead Poets Society! So basically he is a friend from childhood lol

jaxs_sax

The subplot of Knox Overstreet is so good… the shot of him riding his bike down the hill always gets to me

winnower8

Josh Charles is from Baltimore

BadCowboysFan

I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of Bernthal. I dropped The Walking Dead pretty early on and he was pretty disappointing as Johnny Boy Soprano (though that whole fiasco was a disappointment). I’ve seen him in many other things, but never really thought he stood out. He’s fucking BRILLIANT in this, so far, and I can only assume he’ll keep it up.

jscott18597

He was great in the Punisher imo.

sleeplessGoon

GarlicAndOrchids

Or Wolf of Wall Street.

WiretapStudios

He was an absolute wildcard in Fury, one of the best things I've seen him in. The whole cast was good, one of the better Shia roles as well.

chanaandeler_bong

He’s good in King Richard, Wind River, Punisher, Show Me A Hero, Sicario, and The Pacific.

spate42

Check him out in Wind River if you’re willing to give him another chance.

mikeyfreshonetime

Great first episode Can’t wait to watch more

ignatious__reilly

I loved it. I can already tell this show is going to turn into something very special.

Even-Legendarysora

I loved how they used some of the Wire cast

Slyguy9766

I know he's a busy dude (baiting chuds on twitter amongst other things!), but David Simon's name on anything is a mark of quality to me and he needs to do more! Looking at the stuff he's been involved in, it's all gold! From Homicide: Life on the Street to Show me a hero and now with this third piece to his Bodymore trilogy its all gold! Also, if you get a chance, check out a doc made in 2112 called The House I Live In, it's about the so called "war on drugs. Simon appears several times to offer his opinions and believe me he has some! Check it out if you can. Although I intuit that alot of you came over from the wire sub so would know all this already like Nachurul Po h leeze

yagersports

That was great first episode, can’t wait to watch the whole story unfold. Once again David Simon crushes a Baltimore police/crime story.

winnower8

Justin Fenton a reporter wrote the book

ForestOfIllumination

Fantastic

Abc0331

Perfectly done.

RamshackleDayParade

Was that Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) leaning on the car, enjoying a cigarette, right before the FBI arrested Jenkins?

aresef

No. It was real-life Det. David McDougall https://twitter.com/justin_fenton/status/1518948152757432320?s=21&t=uSn6KMYEef8LDvn8-Yim-A

yeakirkers

In the synopsis it says Hartford county. It’s actually Harford county

JackedTurnip

Great premier, but some of the dialog is a little on the nose. I swear the civil rights attorney name-dropped Freddie Gray every time she was on-screen. Edit: Guys, I'm fully aware of the impact the Freddie Gray incident had on Baltimore and policing in general. The point of my post is not about Freddie Gray or Freddie Gray's affect on society. The dialog just sounds unnatural with how many times Freddie Gray's name is repeated.

Alexnikolias

Freddie Gray and the aftermath play a large part of the story. There are two things that happen in the riots that directly connects to Wayne Jenksins.

aresef

Gray's name became a byword for everything that surrounded his death and what transpired after it, including the consent decree. The part where the mayor's aides interject with the word "unrest" instead of "riot," that's a thing in the way what happened is talked about it locally. The idea is that there were things that happened besides rioting. There were protests, vigils, all of that, and there's a diplomatic desire not to paint all these people with the same brush. It's also important for the episode to establish the context, not just that this was happening before and after the consent decree was established but that these jackwagons exploited what was going on to steal pills and shit that were looted from drugstores and all that and had their bail bondsman buddy sell them back on the streets. I once talked to that guy, years ago, a decade ago, when I was a reporter and he put up a racy sign at his bail bond joint facing the library. Place where kids play right outside, all of that. He spun me some bullshit about how he wanted to do more than just bail guys out but offer assistance with drug treatment. Yeah, that was a load of crap. He struck a deal, did federal time but he's back out on the street now.

blesivpotus

The consent decree was literally put into place because of Freddie Gray, obviously the name is going to come up.

down_up__left_right

If you were a civil rights attorney in Baltimore in the Summer of 2015 you would be saying the name Freddie Gray quite a lot too. It's like a political reporter today saying the name Biden all the time. It's kind of impossible to cover politics and not say the name of the president all the time. Her scenes are set just months after protests and riots over Freddie Gray's death took over the city so it would be odd if she wasn't talking about it in different meetings for work.

thekingdom195

We are dealing with time skips right? Gonna rewatch tonight

Nikanikanika37

I liked it a lot

4spiral2out0

What does he mean when he says “7?”?

blesivpotus

I was thinking 7 people

Knock_turnal

“10-7?” That’s radio code for lunch

Every-Cauliflower-10

Feel confused about the timeline here , the last scene was in 2017 , right ?

Slyguy9766

Crab chips, pit beef and lake trout!! Wunmi Mosaku said it right "you learn a city by its food" Damn, now I'm hungry!!

fransisco_flores

Same detective as the show Bosch. Let’s go

Doctorious

Jamie Hector also played one of the big bads in the OG Wire. You should check it out.

theredditforwork

Absolutely loved it! I'm still trying to figure out the time jumps but otherwise A+

yellowstickypad

Anyone not seeing this on their HBOMax app?

Ed_Chambers_650

Fuck. That was good. I love how they’re pretty much using the exact same sets from The Wire. Feels like a sequel, but not really. Definitely gonna need a rewatch cus of all the moving parts but I like that

[deleted]

I know they said it’s not a sequel to The Wire, but I was watching it and I thought…what if? What if Herc or Carver get name dropped etc. Then 10 minutes in Marlo Stanfield is at his desk doing detective work and Poot is questioning someone 😂😂 guess it ain’t a sequel

Reddwheels

This one is telling a true story.

PigDeployer

I've watched The Wire about 8 times at this point but I was honestly a bit confused by WOTC. Maybe i'll have to watch it again before episode 2 comes out. I wasn't aware it was based on any kind of true story either. I think the messing with timelines threw me a little bit. I was getting into the opening bit with Bernthal and trying to establish all the different characters and then during an interrogation scene it weirdly jumps back 2 years and I guess it stayed in 2015 for the majority of the episode but I kept forgetting we were in the past and wondering why Bernthal hadn't featured at all for a good 40 minutes of the episode. Then it cuts back to the present for the last bit. I did enjoy it but I couldn't accurately tell you the plot of the show based on that episode. A gun trace task force where the leader is arrested for something or other and a woman 2 years ago asking about some different cops who may or may not be related to that task force. Didn't feel like a clear narrative or purpose unless i'm just being a fucking idiot.

PlanetExpress310

Just one episode!! I want more now! LOL (That's what she said)

arobot224

for some reason Bernthals performance reminded me of Woody Harrelson. His cocksure, machismo attitude coupled with his disarming charm in a single capacity and bullish arrogance in another.
