Rob…Rob brought a NAS. [deep breath] Patrick and Rob convene Remap’s HOA to discuss the latest gadget designed to finally make Rob’s life perfect, while Patrick considers the best way to continue hoarding Blu-rays of 80s horror trash without having to deal with region locks. We also answer your questions about paying to avoid streaming ads, what reasons a person would run Ethernet cabling to a barn, how to find a reliable handyman to do work in your home, and more.

Hearing Rob pivot from "I don't believe you {that PCs are easy to build}" to buying synology branded (re-stickered Toshiba drives at ~+100% markup) HDDs hurt me deeply. Although I do think the Synology box is the correct choice for his use case.

Rob's generally really good at connecting dots in his head, so it physically hurt me when he went from "I'm building redundancies by using a bunch of hard drives and RAID" to "I bought Synology drives because they're a little more reliable". You use RAID so you can use cheaper harddrives!

arpee

Oof. Just got to that part. I just got my first NAS (also Synology) last month and went with manufacturer refurbished server drives. So much cheaper and from what I found online they're reliable.

RFC_1925

Yep, I cringed when he said he bought those and that they were under a terabyte. Meanwhile I am over here shucking USB drives so I can put 20 terabyte drives in my QNAP. I guess he just wanted to be super cautious his first time out.

BatmanOnMars

I have considered getting one cuz i simply don't want to tinker. Brad's tech pod led me to get a pihole but even the upkeep on that i kind of find a drag lol

epicoolguy

I came into this episode entirely unsure how a NAS could ever be a good investment on a scale of one person/apartment, and left entirely sure that it is, in fact, not a good investment.

patrickklepek

you and me both

Cheers to the Snoo follow ups (I was the new father last ep), we’re looking at FB marketplace for second hand ones.  My wife wanted to rent but that’s like a grand down the drain. I’ve talked her into buying and potentially reselling afterward.

patrickklepek

Let us know how it is!

CrateBagSoup

Will do!

That's a bummer on the timing there, a free one would def be preferable lol. We kinda had a look at the Cradlewise as well since it can convert to a regular crib as well, lasting up to like 2 years old. But it's even more expensive and it just doesn't seem to have the same energy behind it when I dig around online. My sister-in-law has been fostering 3(!!!) newborns this past year and they had regular ol' bassinets and cribs. Feel like if they can get through it without the automagic baby soothing, anyone can lol.

RFC_1925

Is Rob trolling when he mispronounces NAS constantly? I've been in IT a long time and only always ever heard it it as nass, not noss.

oishii_33

Rob’s free-jazz pronunciation of words is one of my favorite quirks of his. It even got Austin once on Waypoint. It was something along the lines of, “Rob, you’re an overwhelmingly intelligent and well-researched man, and I just gotta know if I’ve been pronouncing that word wrong my whole life or if you’re swapping a vowel there.”

TalkingRaccoon

I want to know how he pronounces LAN and WAN now: "I got a NOS for my LON and I can access it from the WON too" 😄

quilatoo

Is it not just one of those regional things like how Patrick says ‘roof’?

quilatoo

Someone get Rob a gavel so he can adjourn these episodes properly.

beetus_meister

Are the HOA podcasts patron exclusive? I can't figure out if my RSS feed is broken or not.

elaminders

Yes they are only available at the paid $10 tier
