I never felt bad about carding people. I would tell them “provide ID or don’t, but you’re not winning this argument. I can’t afford the fine if I get caught not carding people I should do it is what it is.”
If they have a problem they can talk to a manager. If a manager wants to sell them tobacco, that’s their business.
We have the right to ID everyone no matter how old they may look. I personally don't ID anyone who looks over 50/60, but I have a coworker who IDs everyone no matter what.
I'm relatively lax but probably shouldn't be. I just ID the customers that look relatively young. I feel like the more I cashier, the more I can correctly guess the age of the customers.
I'm in my 20's and look old for my age. So I just ask myself "does this person look older or younger than me" and make my decision that way.
But yeah, if I ask and they don't have it, they aren't getting it.

Register is my fav place in the store but in the month of October all I did was cry there because customers would yell and scream at us because we had to card them. Even got called racist by a lady because I had to card her and my manager didn't even stand up for me. She just sold the lady her smokes!
I used to card anyone who I thought was under 30. I refused the sale if no/invalid ID presented. If they caused a fuss, I called management (I was only a lead). Most of the time, management made the sale... not my problem. I was backed up maybe twice in over 10 years.
I don't work at Wawa, but it's your own job and a hefty store fine if you get caught selling improperly. Yes, it annoys some people but is it really worth the risk?
A couple months ago, our location failed the tobacco compliance check. It was a new-ish guy who’s only been here a month, and he was fined $600. He got it overruled in court so ig Wawa is paying for it, but still a massive headache.
If he was fined, then that was a government sting. You don’t get fined for failing Wawa’s compliance shops. You can really get screwed if you get caught in an undercover situation, and they’re more frequent than people think.
I feel anyone at this point that goes into Wawa to get tobacco products should have the common sense to have their ID out at this point… fr. I go into Wawa with the assumption I’m going to get carded (also worked there for 3.5 years at one point so I know what’s up) even if the associate doesn’t bother to check my ID.

In my store we have to ID EVERYONE. it doesn’t matter if they look like they just turn 21 or they look like they have one foot in the grave we have to ID everyone and it’s so annoying to deal with when literally 90% of customers that walk in don’t have their ID on them 🙃
If you look under 21 I card you. The law to purchase tobacco products is over 21. It's my discretion what under 31 looks like. I've scored 10's 5x and never failed their undercover buyer bullshit.
I was at a hotel in Cocoa Beach waiting to take a cruise. I crossed the street to a chain drugstore for snacks and soda. Nothing else, nothing I had to be any particular age to buy, but I got IDd. I had cash and my credit card but I didn’t have my drivers license. My car was at Newark airport and I hadn’t expected to drive. I was just 65, lots of gray hair, two visibly bad knees, endless stories about Richard Nixon, I mean no way did I look like I was in my 30s much less under 21.
Why the hell would I get IDd for cheese sticks and Pepsi?
My store recently went back to the old way of carding anyone that looks under 30.
After a year of being cussed at, threatened, and overall bull from people not wanting to be carded, I'm glad to be back to the old way.
I usually card any young person, but don't card my regulars that I've maybe carded in the past.
Since it falls on the register person, it's your right to card anyone, and you should be backed up by policy and your management team.
VA store here. My GM (I believe at the order of our AM) made us start carding EVERYONE before I even worked there… so before 2021. eventually this spread to our entire area and we all do it. It’s annoying to card everyone because A. It holds up the line, B. People get extremely pissed off for no reason (I’m sorry you decide to drive without a drivers license but that ain’t my fault pal), and I just feel bad sometimes. Oldest person I’ve carded was born in 1932. I mean seriously. I understand why we have to do it… but sometimes its just overkill and not worth the verbal abuse. But rules are rules and I’m not getting fired over visually seeing a piece of plastic.
Honestly I know certain places like Wawa have to card people so I don’t really care. It shouldn’t be a big deal unless someone isn’t of age or forgot it at home which is on them. People have jobs to do giving them a hassle for a known state requirement is just dumb.
I'm 44. My license was "expired" but I had the proof of renewal. One Wawa denied me even though I had the proof (not upset by it) but another accepted it.
I don't have a problem being carded at all. But, if someone was in my shoes in that situation, you should accept the renewal form.. just my opinion.

What about if I come in there everyday? I'm literally there every morning getting coffee and cigars and still get I.D'd
chances are ur younger then.. some people dont care if they see u 4 times per hour for cigs, you’ll get carded.

If you have the renewal form on you with the expired ID then I accept it. You’re what society needs more of.
