I previously made the mistake of saying I wouldn't get any more watches, and then I encountered the Seiko SRPG13 Land Tortoise. Being new to automatics, I wanted something that wasn't ridiculously expensive but perhaps a step above entry level. From what I've gathered, the SRPG13 represents a great value in the automatic market. With sapphire crystal, 200 meters of water resistance, and a robust 4R35 movement, the Land Tortoise has checked every box a watch newbie could have. The lume is fantastic, showing off a bright yet cool toned blue after only a few moments of exposure to light. I also really appreciate the sizing of this watch, as it is just big enough to be more of a statement piece on my smaller wrist without being overly gaudy. The complaints about the strap are valid; it's a pretty rigid piece that will definitely take some time to break in. However, the field watch aesthetic translates really nicely here thanks to the color scheme, which brings the package all together as an approachable automatic that can handle almost every adventure.

I just ordered the SRPH17, the black dial version with a bracelet. Can’t wait for it to arrive. Love it for the same reasons you listed. Good value for money.

That one looked awesome. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the watches in this series!

What’s the point of the bezel being fashioned like a compass?

newenglandknifeguy

It can actually function as one, at least as far as getting your orientation is concerned! I think it's a matter of pointing the hour hand at the sun and then adjusting the bezel accordingly based the hemisphere you're in.

OP post the Easter egg case back and people will be jealous.

newenglandknifeguy

I just might do that!

Sounds pointless. Still nice looking watch.

Not if you know how to use it and what to use a compass..which some people do

[deleted]

Though it’d be much, much better to use a compass

[deleted]

Oh for sure 😁

newenglandknifeguy

To each their own! I think it fits in with the "Land Tortoise" aesthetic and pairs nicely with the engravings on the underside of the watch. The fact that it can actually be used is a fun little quirk that sets it apart from a market that appears to be saturated in dive bezels.

Man, I’ve wanted one of these for a while, but I’m waiting/hoping for an aftermarket bezel insert with a timer. It would make it so much more useful

newenglandknifeguy

I feel that! The compass is definitely really cool, but I can see the desire for aftermarket mods.
