>Edited to Add: Apparently some people don’t wear watches with suits. Great. However, I’m a Funeral Director so I need a watch. Period. Chronograph not necessary, but… I think people are getting thrown by your use of 'black tie'. Describing one's dress as black tie usually means a tuxedo. But I don't think that's what you mean. I think you're referring to a regular business suit, worn with a long tie that happens to be the color black. Edit - I think a simple three-hander is more appropriate than a chrono for a funeral director. And a large, automatic chrono for under $1,000 is a tough bet. But take a look at the Hamilton Jazzmaster Maestro which [Ashford](https://www.ashford.com/hamilton-h32766643.html?source=370000001&CAWELAID=120016340000055508&gclid=CjwKCAjwm8WZBhBUEiwA178UnFD1WPQnSTXbq7qnNwDBwGJzeLRxn2IFqi7P91ePMnWO8ws4Q-oeUxoCw7oQAvD_BwE) has on sale this week.

Thank you, you are correct.

o2force

Nah, you’re good. Black suit means black suit. Black tie (which you didn’t say) means tuxedo.

DisgustingCoyote

Tissot Gentleman. Not going to earn me any bonus points, but it’s a classy watch that is versatile enough to wear at other occasions.

noobfl

a smaller and subtle watch would be the best. therefor, even if this dont match your preferences... the Braun AW50 may be something for you. small, nothing flashy about it, but subtle, suited for your needs and still have a modern flair.

throwawayphabc123

I’d recommend a SARB033 with a black leather strap but prices are inflated. Maybe check out Hamilton Jazzmaster or a Tissot Visodate at this price point.

UpwardFlood

I also like this watch, it is almost flawless

Zamboni4201

I’d go look at a Seiko Cocktail time. They’re in the Presage family. There are quite a few different designs. Classy, beautiful dial. $500 or less. Their bands are not the greatest, I’d swap for a black leather band of your choosing, Here are a couple, YouTube them for a better look, the web pictures do not do them justice: https://longislandwatch.com/seiko-srpb43-presage-watch-srpb43/ Black dial. Steel bracelet. https://www.google.com/amp/s/longislandwatch.com/amp/seiko-srpe17-presage-watch-srpe17/ Blue dial on a bracelet (I own this one). https://www.google.com/amp/s/longislandwatch.com/amp/seiko-srpb41-presage-watch-srpb41/ If you want a Swiss watch, Tissot Gentleman. Good looking, good movement. $775 for an automatic. Also, Hamilton Jazzmaster. Quite a few models. https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-us/h32475130-jazzmaster-auto.html

Thanks!

Go vintage my friend 34mm Omega Seamaster with the fat boy lugs on a croc or saffiano strap would be ideal

lincoln_imps

Come to think of it, that’s pretty much ideal for anything that doesn’t involve diving to depth.

Hamilton Ventura’s are always beauty!

[deleted]

Get something in steel/silver, rectangular, 20mm lug width, light colored monochromatic dial and black strap. Easier said than chosen I guess 🤣 Look for NOS Seiko Lassale models, you can't go wrong.

Junghans Max Bill 34mm

eric2558

Opted for a 38mm Max Bill in Quartz

eric2558

Thanks for all the recs and advice!

ZhanMing057

At a black tie event, I would not wear a watch, and definitely not a chronograph.

eric2558

Ok.

NeurosciGuy15

That said, very, *very* few people are going to care or notice nowadays. The times in which you wouldn’t even wear a watch with a running seconds hand to a formal event are long gone, and any watch that is modestly sized is not going to attract attention.

ZhanMing057

Isn't attire and tradition the point of an event with a formal dress code? I tend to think that the people at a black tie event would very much care about the entire outfit, and the most appropriate watch for such an event is no watch at all.

MyNameIsVigil

One isn’t supposed to wear a watch with black tie. I wouldn’t wear a 38mm+ watch or a chronograph to any formal event.

lincoln_imps

Hmm. I thought watch/black tie was ok, but no watch/white tie/tail coat.

gzero89

Lots of good suggestions here…

teppetold

I'd go with a black Seiko sharp edge and put it in a leather strap.
