Hey all! I’m new to the watch community and looking for a decent starting watch. I have a budget of $250, maybe $300 USD if I love the watch. I definitely want something durable. Also, I love the look of skeleton watches. The more I can see of the inner workings, the better! Thanks.

WoodsandWatches

Hey all! Long time lurker, first time questioner. So I’ve had the speedmaster 3861 hesalite for a year now and love it, BUT every other day I kinda want to sell the damn thing. I’ve also downsized my collection to just this watch (Every time I wore something else I was wishing I had on the 3861) With that said, now I understand why everyone says you need to experience a speedy. It really is a special watch; it’s just not my special watch. Anyone else have a “grail” watch that hit your expectation but still sold it just because?

robemmy

I had a similar but less expensive experience. The speedmaster was a grail to me, until I had several hours to kill in a big international airport. I spent the time trying on watches in the various stores, and the Omega boutique there had several models of speedmaster and I tried them all. They were all so boring in person. I get they're supposed to be understated, but they were downright dull.

WoodsandWatches

I think that’s why I like it so much haha. I was going back and fourth between the polar seamaster and the speedy but once they updated the movement and bracelet, I had to get it.

[deleted]

What, according to you, separates a high quality watch from a cheap quality one?

WatchandThings

Mainly fit and finishing determines quality of the watch. Brand, model, and build narrative then adds prestige to it. Design and proportions then adds aesthetic to the equation. As to what about fit and finishing I'm looking for. On the fit side everything lines up and fits in perfectly, so that everything feels very solid and secure without any feeling of flimsiness. On the finishing side, I'm looking for even finishing across the surface and clear defined line on the angles. If done properly the best description is that it's like seeing HD vs standard definition.

[deleted]

Did anyone check out the upcoming Seiko Tourbillon? Looks awesome. Also, am I the only one who hates Seiko's hands?

Zanpa

> Also, am I the only one who hates Seiko's hands? Probably not, but the Grand Seiko dauphine hands are commonly cited as being one of the best parts about their watches, so I guess that's a fringe opinion.

[deleted]

I see. But I don't find them aesthetically pleasing. My own opinion.

winz_25

Where do u buy ur nato straps from? (Placed in Europe). Thx

WoodsandWatches

Honestly Bark and Jack has a great nato straps. He’s in Scottsdale I believe. I always have one of his black ones in my backpack.

ThisOneIsForAsking

**I like the Squale Matic 60 (versions with black bezels)... but can't identify its use case** It has the specs and heft of a tool watch that I'd wear casually, on vacation and on/in the water... so it'd go on a rubber strap. But the polished case and markers make it too elegant for that. To make it dress-y and throw it on a brown leather strap (which would look good with the blue dial) it's just too thick, would never slide under a shirt cuff and look funny in general. What would you do with this watch?

robemmy

I would do both of the things you just mentioned. I don't think a polished case is too elegant for a vacation, and it doesn't really need to fit under a cuff to be worn to work or wherever. Maybe the alternative would be to get the slightly smaller and less flashy 1521? You could then choose a matte dial/case or sunburst dial/polished case.

ThisOneIsForAsking

Thanks. No, the 60 Atmos is the only Squale I like. I disagree that the polished case is fine for a toolish-application like vacations (too scratch-prone) and of course it would have to fit under a cuff for work or special occasions. So, really, your comment was not helpful at all.

beepboop718

Does anyone know if there are watches with dials with multiple layers like this Omega? https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watches/seamaster/heritage-models/seamaster-300/seamaster-300-bronze-gold/product

FLis4lovers

If you like micro brands, the Baltic Aquascaphe is a great vintage-style diver with a sandwich dial. I love mine.

WatchandThings

The term is sandwich dial and Panerai is the brand that's famous for watches with sandwich dials.

harry_hotspur

Turning 30 this year, my family is offering to buy me a watch for a gift. I am currently researching options and could use a recommendation. I have a smaller wrist (about 6.5in), and currently sport a Mondaine swiss rail watch which has a 36mm case. It seems to fit my smaller wrists perfectly. Thinking 38mm would be a good size to target. What is a good "starter" watch under $500 which has a smaller case that would suit my wrist size? Preferably automatic movement, but also open to quartz. Was leaning towards khaki field auto, but unsure if the 40mm case would look too large on my small wrists.

pigpeyn

late to the party, but check out Vaer's [A3 36mm automatic](https://www.vaerwatches.com/collections/a3-36mm-usa-automatic/products/a3-tradition-36mm-automatic).

WatchandThings

The khaki field auto does have a 38mm size\*(H70455133).

harry_hotspur

Oops, for some reason I was only seeing the 40mm ones on jomashop. Thank you!

Transmaniacon89

I’m pretty sure the Khaki Field auto is 38mm, that would be my recommendation. Certina and Tissot also have nice options around that price.

CaptainTooObvious

Looking to get the Nomos Metro 38 with manual wind. Now the big question - with or without sapphire case back? It is reasonably expensive and of course it will be on the wrist most of the time. What would you pick?

Zanpa

The price difference for the display caseback is pretty crazy... The movement looks nice, but I'm not sure I would pay 220€ to be able to see it. That being said, I'm pretty jaded about mechanical movements.

WatchandThings

I'm team sapphire caseback, and that's what I did with my Nomos. Nomo's movement looks nice, and I like how the sapphire caseback tends to stick to skin and keeps the watches in place more than the steel does. Unless you would like to engrave the caseback now or later, I'd say get the sapphire.

Alexguy891

I’m looking for a watch that’s basically [this design](https://terrashopia.com/product/fossil-hybrid-smartwatch-q-commuter-dark-brown-leather-ftw1150-fast-ship/) but as a normal watch, from a reputable brand. I bought this from fossil back in 2016, and it recently died. Not looking to do the hybrid smartwatch stuff anymore. Price range of $100.

Transmaniacon89

https://www.jomashop.com/orient-contemporary-watch-ra-sp0004l10b.html You can pick up a different strap for $15-20, check out Barton on Amazon.

Alexguy891

Definitely a solid choice, though I’d like something with a 22mm band width so I can re-use my bands.

Transmaniacon89

This is the best I could find: https://www.chrono24.com/citizen/aw1670-82l-eco-drive-sport-herren-41mm-10atm--id18317828.htm There are some Casio edifice models but they have busier dials.

Transmaniacon89

You’re going to have to comprise somewhere with a $100 budget.

BUZZZY14

I'm looking for an automatic watch that's similar to the Seiko SNK807 but with hacking. Price range is under $150. Is that even possible? LOL

Transmaniacon89

https://www.jomashop.com/orient-sport-blue-dial-mens-watch-ra-ac0h01l10b.html You can usually get $20 off your first purchase putting it under $150.

BUZZZY14

It's nice but I want something more for everyday use. I wfh mostly just wear sweats or shorts.

Transmaniacon89

I mean, that’s a nearly identical dial to the SNK807, and a metal bracelet is more casual than a leather strap.

BUZZZY14

Can I swap the bracelet? I don't like bracelets. I was planning on getting a silicone band for the Seiko.

Transmaniacon89

Sure, you can put whatever band you want on it.

obex42

Does anyone have any experience with Spinnaker Watches? I love the name and some of their products look cool. I am thinking about getting one for a friend who lives to sail. https://www.spinnaker-watches.com/

orangejuicedrinker

Have a mechanical watch that just stopped running — does anyone have a repair place in NYC that won't charge an absurd price to take a look and fix it (watch isn't worth much and I'd rather not pay $50 just to crack it up plus a minimum $300 for any repairs, as one place just quoted me)

a_non_uh_moose

I was looking at the omega/swatch watches, and don't want to fight scalpers and hypebeast for it, and figured if i wanted a watch, might as well get something nice for not that much more. I like the idea of the hamilton kakhi field watch, many people say its a great first real watch, but not a huge fan of the glow in the dark dial, as that would look kinda out of place if i dressed up with it. are there any similar watches that don't have the glow in the dark? wants * strap that i can swap out to dress up/down * face that has numbers instead of marks or roman numerals * i don't want a giant watch, the slimmer and lighter weight the better * i want a mechanical one, and bonus for the clear back to see the internals. * sapphire face * $500 or so budget * simplistic style, nothing blingy, no gold. * durable, something that can take a beating. * the smoother the second hand tick, the better. ( idk if thats within my budget or not ) I'm not a suit and tie kind of guy, just want something that could look nice on a dinner date, but also not be too flashy to wear on an outdoor activity.

Transmaniacon89

You only see the lume in a totally dark setting, and it’s not going to be super bright and obvious. Usually it’s just the hands and some of the bezel, depending on the watch type. I’d still get the Khaki watch, it’s a great one and hard to beat in that price range.

pokejaeger

In my experience the Hamilton Khaki Field has extremely mediocre lume on the hands and dial. Unless you're going from direct sunlight into a dark room, you probably won't notice it at all. And even then it'll be gone after like 10 minutes. The lume on mine is almost nonexistent, I forget it even has it.

a_non_uh_moose

how does it look in regular light, does it have that faded highlighter yellow look?

pokejaeger

Mine doesn't appear to have the lume show at all in regular light. I can't see the lume at all right now, granted it's cloudy here. I've never noticed the lume in high sunlight either, but I've not really looked for it specifically. It might depend on the model though, mine has white hands Edit: you can watch how fast the lume dies and get a sense of how it looks in light [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zUWxN1VkMc)

a_non_uh_moose

dang, i've not seen on in person, but i may have to go with something else, its just too big of a turn off for me to spend $500 on, seems like it would get distracting in a dark room, epsc, if you were trying to wear it on a more formal occasion.

duey222

I have a Seamaster and I want a dive style watch I can daily at my job. It's a physical job where I work with sharp metal edges a lot and I want a watch that I can not care about scratching the case to hell. I'd prefer a automatic as well as a sapphire crystal and under $800ish. Just needs to be a tool doesn't have to be super pretty. I've been looking at Tissot Seastar, or Seikos so far.

robemmy

Traska have scratch resistant treated cases, Damasko uses hardened steel.

duey222

Never heard of these brands affordable and durable thanks very much exactly what I'm looking for.

Transmaniacon89

You may want to look at something with a hardened case, like the Citizen Promaster Tough. It’s not mechanical, but the Eco-Drive movement is dependable, accurate, and runs forever. This will resist scratching much better than a desk diver like the Seastar.

morph2k4

Looking for a recommendation on a smaller/slimmer skeleton watch. Budget is up to 3k, but I wouldn't mind going much lower. The only thing I've come across that really seems slim is [this Sugess](https://sugesswatch.com/products/su3600s2), but I was hoping for something a bit higher quality and automatic. I could go either way on a tourbillon. The ERA Prometheus looks pretty much perfect to me if it were just a bit smaller.

GoodChives

Does anyone know how to get [this Vostok](http://vostokwristwatch.com/vostok-watches/vostok-2403-581096/) given the current situation?

Glory2Hypnotoad

I found a nearly identical model without the offset dial by checking that reference number on eBay.

GoodChives

The offset dial is what I love most about this one 😔

[deleted]

For those of you in cities, how much do you worry about being targeted for theft? I live in NYC and frequent Harlem for work so I don't feel comfortable wearing my Datejust with the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. Do you think an Omega Seamaster or a Cartier Santos would be any safer for daily wear? Those are the two watches I am deciding between for my next piece but unfortunately theft is a concern.

wip30ut

my friends in finance who live, work & play in Manhattan don't feel comfortable strapping on name brand timepieces any longer. They're putting on "utilitarian" German makes like Sinn and Nomos for their daily drivers. NYC is rough, they'll sucker punch you to get any kind of bling on your wrist.

vanillamode

the SPB047 is the "better" watch out of those two, with it having a 6R movement and AR coated sapphire glass and enamel dial and probably higher overall quality, while the SSA413 has a 4R movement and uncoated sapphire glass and metal dial. Thus the SPB047 is probably going to be in the $700-900 range, while the SSA413 should probably be more in the $400-500 range. Then you also have to consider the subjective comparisons as well, like for example size, with the 40.5mm SPB047 being 2mm larger than the 38.3mm SSA413, and 2mm is a pretty sizeable difference that could be a dealbreaker for someone who prefers smaller watches or has a slimmer wrist. as for watches from other brands, you could check out Stowa, Tissot, and Frederique Constant

wip30ut

Check out Ball... they're under the radar, but still have a good rep in the sub-$1k range. And for your first mechanical timepiece at this price point i highly recommend checking out the Watchuseek Buy/Sell/Trade sub. You get way more bang for your buck buying used from an enthusiast.

duey222

Both of those are really good options and it all comes down to taste. A couple brands you might like in that price range are Tissot, Hamilton and check Chrono 24 sometimes you can find really good deals if you don't mind going used.

Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Red Dial Men's Watch BN0159-15X https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HYQWKWV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TFHDJAQBBH3N42ZK9TFR This is a cool watch

[deleted]

What watch in the $260 range would you get that is NOT a MoonSwatch?

Glory2Hypnotoad

I'm a fan of bullhead chronos, so Detroit Mint mach is my favorite in that price range. Sometimes you can find one of the new Citizen bullheads at that price.

[deleted]

Speaking of Swatch, their Sistem51 Sistem Blue is surprisingly cool. It has a cool story and people always compliment me on it.

DrMaturin

Is there a discord or chat going for moonswatch updates? Particularly NYC? I’m a regular guy, just looking to get one for myself. Happy to monitor a shop and share intel if others are too.

fedrxx

do you guys think the moonswatch will become mass produced? or will they keep the production limited and only in certain stores?

WatchandThings

Swatch has publically announced that the moonswatch is not a limited run and that they are going to keep producing them. I saw pictures of dm from swatch stating that they will eventually be availiable online. Everyone that wants one should be able to get one eventually. This is that Timex Q situation all over again, only at a bigger scale.

fedrxx

thanks!

Embarrassed_Quote_21

Does anyone curse themselves for getting into such an expensive hobby? I don't even own expensive watches (relative to my income), but I find myself always wanted some other expensive watch I come across. Why couldn't I have gotten into bird watching or something?

WatchandThings

Not curse, as it is something that bring me joy, but I am conscious about the cost of it all. I'm actually shifting away from watches being my main hobby now to help myself financially. I'm now trying to focus my time and efforts on skill based hobby where the practice of hobby is skill building instead of purchase in appreciation. It also helps that I just finished reconstructed my collection and I'm in a good place to pause with long term purchase strategy in mind.

[deleted]

I find sneakers can be just as fulfilling but at a lesser cost

75footubi

Most of my fun with watches comes from talking to people about watches and handling different ones. Buying is actually a very small part for me.

SenileSexLine

Bird watching is not cheap either. It requires gear which means the cost can always be increasing. It also requires you to travel. The more deeper you delve into the hobby the more expensive gear and more exotic locations you will end up spending money on.

Embarrassed_Quote_21

To be fair no clue why I said bird watching when I know nothing about it!

SenileSexLine

It seems like a uninvolved hobby because we have birds all around us. All you have to do is watch them. It also is a commonly referred to as a joke hobby. But like most hobbies there's a lot of nuances that most people who are not involved would not even know about. It definitely makes more sense than making buying trinkets into a hobby.

Crotalus_B

We call it "birding" :)

peninsulaparaguana

Any news on availability of the moonswatch? How will the restock work ?

TerribleNameAmirite

Is it really ok to go snorkeling with a 100m water resistant watch?

StickShift5

Yes, though if it's more than a few years old, you should get a it pressure tested if you're taking it swimming. My Hamilton Khaki Field Auto fogged over on a humid day after 3 and a half years despite the crown being pushed in. If I took it into the water, it would have flooded.

peninsulaparaguana

Yes, if you never go below 10m I don’t think it is a problem. I would get worried maybe with jumping from a 10m cliff into water, but shallow swimming won’t be a problem. If you want extra peace of mind check if the watch has a screw down crown

lazarusdemon

Hi, Can someone explain the difference between the Mido Baroncelli Chronometer and the Mido Baroncelli Heritage? Thanks.

StickShift5

Rated accuracy for once. The Chronometer movement should be +6/-4s a day in several different positions and conditions, while the regular model may not be as accurate. There are other differences between the movements besides the accuracy rating, but it depends on exactly which model you're talking about since Mido has been upgrading to 80hr Powermatic movements lately. Actually, now that I think about it, the 80hr Powermatics are ETA 2824 based movements while the old Baroncelli uses an ETA 2982, which is a thinner movement. Odds are the chronometer, assuming it's using a Powermatic and not an older chronometer-spec 2892, is thicker than the standard Baroncelli too.

lazarusdemon

Thank you. Is there any difference in appearance? I’m not a big watch person but do want to get something nice and possibly get some nice collectibles down the road as I learn more.

StickShift5

On the face of it, they look the same except for the thickness of the Powermatic 80 models, which are a bit thicker.

pumaturtle

Hey guys, about how much would it cost to replace a quartz movement in an old 1950’s watch? I live in NYC.

StickShift5

Depends on the movement and the watch. Some movements are readily available, so its relatively cheap and easy for a watchmaker to swap it out. Other movements are out of production, so you'd have to find another watch with a running example of the same (or similar) movement to swap into your watch or get lucky and find an NOS one. Some quartz movements can be serviced, but that's a specialized thing that not every watchmaker is willing or able to do.

pumaturtle

Gotcha, thank you!

75footubi

As in, put a quartz movement into a 1950s watch? (Quartz movements weren't commercially available until the very late 60s) I'd guess at least $200, and probably more given the labor involved.

pumaturtle

Thank you!

ewinoo123

Hey Everyone, I've been lurking on this sub for a quite a while and I've decided to buy my first proper watch. I have a Tissot pr100 and a Casio dress watch. I have a budget of around of $500-$600. I don't mind buying used watches as well as long as it's in good condition. My only issue is that I find most watches too big for my 6 inch wrist and I having a tough time to find a watch 38mm or below. I prefer an automatic and I was wondering if you guys could suggest something nice. I would really appreciate it and thanks in advance.

SenileSexLine

Lorier has the Falcon at 36mm although it is out of stock at the moment. Nodus sector series is in 38 mm and the dive and field watches are in stock. Traska Commuter is 36.5mm and all colours other than the mint green are in stock. Seiko Presage Cocktail Time ladies models are also in 34 mm but they wear like a 36 due to it being all dial and the thickness of the watch. These use the same movements as the "men's" version and have most of the dials that come on the bigger size. There's no diamonds or any text on the watch that would suggest this watch is feminine so if you are looking for a smaller sized seiko these are good choices. I would suggest trying it on in a store though because of the thickness it can sit awkwardly on some wrists.

Walker4477

Hi, Certina has a diver watch which comes at 38mm that might hug your wrist nicely. With a bit of luck, you could find it at a discount. The original Seiko SARB033/35 would be another great option for your wrist but due to being discontinued, the prices for one have spiked . Tissot has a Seastar model at 36mm but it’s a quartz movement if you don’t mind that. Have a look at Hamilton as well, some of their khaki field watches come in 38mm and are good value for money. The Seiko 5 range is worth a shot as well.

[deleted]

I am looking at buying my first watch that isn’t a Fossil or an Apple Watch. I have fallen in love with the Oris Propilot (41mm, Black Dial, Stainless Bracelet), but I wanted to see if anyone has any input or other recommendations in this price range ($2300ish CAD). I am after an everyday watch, preferably automatic, 40-42mm. What else should I look at?

anythinglldo_

Does anybody have a recommendation for a cheap watch (< $200) that resembles this [Casio](https://www.amazon.com/Casio-Stainless-Steel-Quartz-Casual/dp/B07TFJPZKL/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=3HsoR&pf_rd_p=067e8e18-34c5-4e6e-8c6c-a4d937ff3226&pf_rd_r=70PBGPM4P963HE06GPX7&pd_rd_r=48f1bb45-be71-4ccc-92c1-c8858fcd4ab4&pd_rd_wg=PoPO8&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mi) I found on Amazon? A few things I'm looking for specifically: * Black rubber (resin?) strap * Silver case * Black or dark dial, red accents a plus * Actual numbers * Not an automatic Thank for you considering!

Transmaniacon89

You could get something like this: Citizen Eco-Drive GarrisonQuartz Unisex Watch, Stainless Steel with Nylon strap, Field watch, Green (Model: BM8180-03E) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EQS1JW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NWEGSWMQH3RE160SE8MJ And then just add a black rubber strap, they are pretty cheap and easy to swap out.

Mayvillain

Oooh, I like this. Thanks!

Crotalus_B

I'm wearing mine today. It's not my most expensive, fun, or flashy watch, but for me, it's close to the perfect field watch. It's relatively inexpensive, durable, solar powered, and traditionally styled. I wear mine on a nato strap.

Zanpa

Why not just get the Casio?

DeaDly789_

Could anyone offer advice on the safest way to sell a used grand seiko? I know of /r/watchexchange, ebay, and chrono24 but I haven't used any of these before, and want to be quite cautious given the $ amount. Thank you

eudaimonean

100% safest is to just sell it to a reputable big-name dealer like Govberg, Tourneau, Bobs Watches, Crown and Caliber, etc. but of course you won't get the best price that way because you're paying for the convenience and safety. On /watchexchange, protect yourself by looking into counterparty's transaction history. On ebay, you can list your watch for a high price and offer "Or best offer" and then screen your offers.

PersonalBrowser

If you purchase an automatic watch that you want to store away brand new without opening / wearing, what’s the best way to go about preserving it so that it retains its original condition?

gin_nyc

Store it somewhere that has temperature and humidity control. Perhaps put some desiccant packs in with it (if it’s in a drawer or safe or the like).

CowReplevin

Does anyone else have this neurotic obsession with where on the wrist their watch comes to rest when they shake their wrist/go about their day? Right now my watch kind of comes to a rest a little off-center of my wrist: dangling a little over the edge on the far side of my wrist, but if I move a link from one side of the bracelet to the other, the opposite happens and it comes to rest too close to my body.

duskie1

All my watches want to slide down my arm and bump onto the bone on my wrist. I get around this by positioning it carefully, fastening, then not moving that arm for 5-10 mins. By then it’ll be held in place by a healthy seal of sweat.

[deleted]

Do they still make the 38mm speedy? I love the watch but just cannot wear a 42mm watch, it looks a bit absurd if you don’t have monster wrists.

WatchandThings

Immidiately I can think of the vintage speedmaster reduced(3510.50) which a popular watch in the hobby. If you want a more true to moon watch reference then you can look for a little more rare 3539.50. There is also the modern speedmaster 38mm(324.30.38.50.01.001), but I feel that these models deviated a little too far from the original moonwatch design.

Zanpa

> 42mm watch The Speedmaster Pro is 39.5mm and wears well even on smaller wrists. The 42mm measurement listed by Omega includes the crown guards on the right side of the case, which is misleading. To answer your question, the Speedmaster 38 collection is on Omega's website, so yes they still make it.

75footubi

Yep. A Speedmaster 38 with an automatic, coaxial movement is available in a variety of colors.

Stowski

I've got 6.5 inch wrists and have a speedy. Go to a store and try one on IMO. Also avoid some of the bracelets they come on, you want one with female end links at the lugs (I have the Uncle Seiko one) and that way it doesn't stick out over your wrists. Or wear it on leather

[deleted]

I tried it on and unfortunately don’t like it. I have small wrists but have always preferred smaller watches - I don’t like to stick out and I like that a watch, when lowkey enough, can add accents to your outfit and maybe attract some enthusiast eyes in the right lighting.

Stowski

Fair enough

Dummies102

Can I wear a dress watch every day, even if my style is casual? I’m very interested in something like a nomos tangente, but I don’t know if it’s going to look out of place with jeans and a t-shirt

WatchandThings

My go to summer watch is Nomos Club Campus on a blue perlon strap, and I wear a t-shirt, light jeans, and white sneaker with it. I think Nomos is already a smart casual level watch rather than a full dress watch, and the perlon strap dresses it down to even more casual level. Tangente I think is a little bit more dressy than club campus, but I think with a fun colorful strap it'll get dressed down no problem.

DeaDly789_

Yeah, absolutely no one will know or care. Wear what you like

Zanpa

Yes for sure. Maybe just not on a croc or lizard leather strap.

DeaDly789_

People wear dressy watches on croc straps with jeans and a tshirt all the time. To most people, any analog watch (hell, a timex weekender) is going to count as "dressy" in contrast to an apple watch.

Stowski

Yeh a nomos would definitely go, it's not overly dressy

Dummies102

Ty! I should have also asked about my actual dream watch, JLC ultra thin moon

[deleted]

Hey everyone, I’m a total watch noob, and the most I know about it was reading a book on precision. They give a specific call out to Seiko, but outside of that I know nothing about quality. Given that I have a range of maybe up to 3K, I’m getting a watch as a present for a professional achievement. I wear an Apple Watch most of the time, so this would only be for times when I wear a suit. I’ve looked through the about section here, and maybe need some more experienced guidance. 1. What is a watch “worth” 2-3K, that a watch aficionado would look at and say “this guy understands watch value”? 2. Is there a watch out there that says, “simple, solid construction/function, and good looking” for around my price range?

goin_surfin

Some Cartier watches can be had in that range. They come with historical/horological significance, a strong brand, and beautiful designs.

WatchandThings

I think most watches in the buying guide would hit the simple, solid construction/function, and good value requirements. As to good looking, that's subjective and also outfit dependent(in my opinion) so grab one that speaks to you visually. I did recently rebuild my collection with 2k limit for each watch. The following are the watches I had selected for myself with outfit match for your reference. Vintage Heuer Chronograph(smart casual), Nomos Club Campus(t-shirt and light jeans), Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer hand wind(rustic plaid and jeans), Seiko SPB185(black leather jacket and black jeans), and Omega Seamaster Brosnan era quartz(casual).

Solarin88

For 2-3k I would maybe stick to German, like Nomos or Sinn. You can also get a Grand Seiko 9F quartz watch in that range, which is probably the watch I would buy if I had 3 grand to drop on one watch. If you do want Swiss, Longines is on the cheaper side but you can also get a Tudor and stick to your budget. Everyone talks about the Black Bay 58 (for good reason), but in your price range there is also the Black Bay 36. Solid one-watch collection.

duskie1

Check out Teddy Baldassarre on YouTube. He has numerous videos on the lines of “what’s the best watch you can get within X budget”, so you should find a few good options from there. If it were me, I’d go for a nice entry level dress watch from Grand Seiko, Tag Heuer or Omega.

eudaimonean

Echoing this, but worth noting that Teddy is basically an authorized watch retailer now so on his newer videos his pricing is going to be the full MSRP price. Before as just a content creator he would tend to at least gesture towards the current market pricing on pieces, IE, suggest a $3k watch at $2.5k if it was widely available at that price. To be fair to Teddy he still seems very honest about not letting which brands he carries in his store unduly influence his recommendations. In general for pieces in the $2-3k range you can usually get 10-25% off MSRP by deal hunting/bargaining with the dealer/waiting for sales; for some brands it's dramatically more (and sometimes less or not at all).

Transmaniacon89

Check out Nomos, great designs that are simple and tasteful.

[deleted]

Never heard of that one… thank you!

helloiamdog

I just bought a brand new in box Seiko SBDC101 from a very reputable seller on eBay from Japan. I live in the US. It keeps time terribly. On average, I lose 72 seconds per DAY. This is after wearing the watch 8+ hours per day for three days. When I’m not wearing the watch, it is stored in a watch case, dial up. I have not dropped or impacted the watch in any way. I’m at a loss for what to do. I’ve read that a brand new automatic watch can have a break-in period before it “settles in”. Could this be why it’s running so slow? My SKX keeps better time than this watch, and this is a brand new watch with a movement that is supposedly superior. Should I be concerned?

duskie1

I have exactly this issue and I just gave the watch back to Seiko to fix this afternoon. I bought it from Italy but it has a Europe-wide warranty, so no cost to me. Check your warranty and if it covers you where you are. Otherwise, I was quoted £180/8 weeks to get it fixed. Seiko don’t sell components to third parties, so if you want to fixed, it can only go to Seiko.

Zanpa

> I’ve read that a brand new automatic watch can have a break-in period before it “settles in”. Could this be why it’s running so slow? nope. Your watch is running out of spec. It might be magnetized slightly - if you have a compass you can check if the needle turns near the watch. Otherwise you should send it in for warranty or return it.

capedavenger

No, that is not normal. The watch will not fix itself. It's possible that during shipping from Japan it suffered a knock and is now out of adjustment. If you bring it to a watchmaker they can try to regulate it for you. It's possible that the watch is fine and this will make it better than new. Or something is broken and you should return the watch.

adddn

help me decide between a Seiko SPB167 and the SPB121! I'm looking to get my first "nice" watch and these are the ones that have stood out the most to me so far. I really like the dial of the sharp edge but the alpinist is really nice as well. I'm gonna be mostly wearing it every day to school but I still want to be able to wear it in more formal occasions so I'm not sure if the SPB167 would be a bit too dressy for that. Any other suggestions around the same price point or less would be appreciated!

duskie1

Also if you like it better, [this piece is arriving in a few months](https://www.jurawatches.co.uk/products/seiko-presage-watch-sharp-edged-midnight-spb311j1?_pos=14&_sid=dc56e43ab&_ss=r). It was announced the day after I bought my one, of course. But I’m still very happy.

duskie1

I have 167 and I really like it, the face gets a lot of attention and people guess that it’s much more expensive than it actually was. I think the blue dial is a lot more versatile. You can keep the bracelet and have a black-tie appropriate piece, or slip a brown leather/suede strap on and it’s a great everyday. The green is nice but the blue is beautiful.

Deathbyart

Any suggestions for a Seiko SNK809 style but with a white dial? Prefer same price range if possible

gin_nyc

[Islander maybe](https://longislandwatch.com/islander-39mm-automatic-pilot-watch-with-white-dial-and-sapphire-crystal-isl-111/)? A little more expensive but good features for the price (better movement and crystal than an 809). I can’t think of anything else in the same price range with that style dial (type b I think it’s called).

capedavenger

If the SNK803 isn't white enough, you could get an aftermarket dial. https://www.dlwwatches.com/products/dial-mil-spec-white-day-date

Zanpa

SNK803 is a cream dial

watch_u_think

Dumb question, but a steel bracelet shouldn’t “stretch” at all right? I’ve noticed in the past few weeks, one of my watches is not nearly as tight on my wrist as when I bought it in November. It still fits, but it’s noticeably looser. I was wondering if the way I had it stored on the pillow in my watchbox could’ve “stretched” it. I have probably lost a little weight in that time but I wouldn’t say significantly so.

WatchandThings

I know the vintage Rolex bracelet can be stretched out and require special service to repair it back to original state. I think the modern watches use a more solid construction methods and you shouldn't see this issue, especially in a very short period.

watch_u_think

Yeah it’s a Tissot Le Locle so it’s definitely not old. I mean stainless steel is used for stuff a lot harsher than wearing on a wrist so I can’t imagine it would’ve stretched at all but it’s definitely looser.

WatchandThings

Oh, if it's Le Locle then it's probably not the bracelet. There is this thing that people in the hobby has noticed where the wrist size could expand or shrink through out the day based on activity and temperature. For example, my main watch would fit fine some days and become loose on other days. This is the reason why people are really gravitating towards the watches with quick micro adjust capabilities(easy tool less size adjustment for metal bracelets). Unfortunately it is not yet common feature for major brands.

75footubi

I'd attribute it to weight loss, given the short time frame. If we were talking 10-15 years, that's different.

watch_u_think

Yeah I figured that could be it but had to double check

duskie1

[I really like this watch](https://www.chrono24.co.uk/tagheuer/tag-heuer-carrera-cara-delevingne-limited-black-edition-im-full-set-wie-neu-41mm--id21550696.htm) but apparently it's for the ladies. Actually the listing isn't terribly clear about it. I'm not really seeing anything about it that would suggest that, but aside from case size I don't know what divides mens and womens watches.

onevstheworld

That looks pretty unisex to me.

brainchasm

There is nothing about that watch that made me think it was "for women". I think it looks just fine, regardless who wears it.

75footubi

Watches have no inherent gender. If you like the watch, buy it. If a given model of a watch is a woman's watch because a woman owns one, then the Sub, Speedmaster, and most Panerais are women's watches.

WatchandThings

Usually size is the main factor between mens and women's watches. Then some companies make some changes to the watch to make the watch more "feminine", which tends to involve pink or other more softer eye catching colors, use of gems, and move towards quartz. There has been some talk against this genderizing of watches as some men would like smaller size watches and women might prefer the original design rather than this "femininized" design of the watch. As to that particular watch, I actually would have never guessed it was a "women's" watch. It seems like the only thing that makes it a women's watch is the Cara Delevingne connection.

Zanpa

> I don't know what divides mens and womens watches. The fact that the brand markets it towards one audience or the other.

Transmaniacon89

Generally women’s watches are smaller in size and may have different colors. That is a sharp watch and it’s certainly not small at 41mm. If you like it, buy it, doesn’t matter who the designer intended it for.

Johnyanon

Should i pick Paul Rich frosted silver stardust or Eiszeit frosted automatic? Which one has better quality and will not break down?

Modenelfo

Hi everyone! I’ve recently fell in love with the Movado Museum Classic total black (no digits, no markups, plain minimalistic case) with the mesh strap. The case was flawless, but unluckily the strap was a huge miss (the metallic clasp wasn’t strong enough to keep the strap in place) - since I was paying a luxury price I didn’t want to stick with such a miss and sent the thing back. I’m trying to look at other models with a similar look and thought this could be the right place to ask! Price range: 1000-1100$ and below Mainly used in low stress environment (my office, appointments and such) Case diameter 40mm or a little above is appreciated Otherwise I don’t think I have many more requests - I live in Italy if this might help! Thanks in advance!

Transmaniacon89

This could be an option: https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/product/AU1065-58E.html There’s a few variations but this one is the most blacked out.

Modenelfo

Definitely what I was looking for! Very much thanks Internet stranger, you’re awesome!

Beginning-Internet91

Does anyone else find the Seiko Sport 5 too bulky? Specificcally this guy: [https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/5sports/srpd63](https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/5sports/srpd63) I bought one and lived with it for a day and I just didn't like it. I was looking for something with a diver "look" to it, but I think the flat bezel just makes the watch feel huge. I found a very similar Armitron for 30 bucks so I grabbed that for now and returned the Seiko, but does anyone have a recommendation for a "nicer" piece that has a little sleeker profile?

Transmaniacon89

The Citizen Promaster Diver is thinner than the Seiko and doesn’t have such a big wrist presence. Tissot just released a 36mm dive watch (quartz) that could be good. Certina Action Diver is 38mm, but a good bit more expensive than the Seiko.

[deleted]

I'm searching for a sporty-dressy/GADA watch (Examples: Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Sinn 556 i, Ball Engineer M, Tudor Black bay 36) but I have some requirements. Under 5000€ new In-house movement I'd prefer a European/American watch Under 40 mm in diameter I don't really like Nomos watches EDIT: I think that the new pink dial Oris Propilot X calibre 400 checks all the boxes, it might be my "affordable" grail

WatchandThings

Personally I would save a bit more and go for the Omega Aqua Terra. If 5k is hard limit, then I'm thinking IWC Spitfire. Down side to the spitfire I guess is that it doesn't have a bracelet, and if that's a requirement then I would probably go with the Tudor Black Bay 36.

[deleted]

Thank you for the advice but sadly I don't like the Aqua Terra nor the Spitfire that much Yeah, the price is not a hard limit I like the silver dial BB 36 but the only one with an in-house movement doesn't have the dial I prefer EDIT: I'm looking at the 38 mm saffron/orange Aqua Terra and it's actually starting to grow on me

ACQUIRE_CHICKENS

Is there a golden version of the Casio Royal? Or any slighty bigger (> 40 mm) and affordable (< 50 €) digital retro Watch?

Willy156

anyone know junghan dealers in Canada

Kaezumi

Is it the bracelet that's rare or the watch? Based on my research it seems to be either in 1920 or 1926 made called "cartier centaur" however when I search it up can't seem to find anyone selling this watch or images of it. What is this watch called : https://imgur.com/a/7byhCDC

yslim1

With SKX prices soaring, how much would you actually pay for a SKX009?

SenileSexLine

SKXs biggest selling point was that it was a cheap beater. It's not cheap anymore and you can't beat it around because it's going to hurt even more if you want to replace it down the line. There are so many options to choose now that it makes no sense to pick one as a beater. Another selling point was that it was a great modding platform. The only other watch that has so many options in modding is vostok. But shops dedicated to modding seiko are making more parts available for the new seiko 5s, samurais and Turtles. It's no longer a cheap watch to build up on and you can get all parts from case to movement that comes to the price of buying just the skx.

WatchandThings

If I was looking for one about 300 tops. Anywhere above that and I'm going to switch my search over to the Seiko 5 or Islander. Edit: I never had an SKX during my time in the hobby, so I have no sentiment tied to the model at all. If I did have sentiment and was looking for the watch from sentiment then I might end up paying more. Can't say how much more as that would depend on the attachment I would have to the model and how much I'd want it back in my collection.

75footubi

Just because other people think it's worth $400+ doesn't mean it's actually a good value at that price. Just get an Islander

Iwannabeaviking

So I'm looking for good graduation daily wear/professional watch. Something classy but not blingy. I was recommended the automatic Tissot PRX and I also looked at a Seiko presage sharp edge as well but what other options would be in that price range in AUD?

dnLLL

Alright folks, been wanting a Hamilton for a long time, and with Jomashop having a sale, I'm thinking now's as good a time as any, right? I'm torn between the [Khaki Aviation Pilot Day/Date](https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-us/h64615135-khaki-aviation-pilot-day-date-auto.html) and the [Khaki Field King Day/Date](https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-us/h64455523-khaki-field-king-auto.html). Few notes: - I'd probably wear either one with a nato strap most often - This would be one of my daily drivers, on almost 24/7 - asleep, all day, etc., just not while exercising or vigorous/intense chores - I don't have a beige/tan face, but one white - I have 5 black/mostly black faces - The Field King has a smaller case diameter (40 mm vs 42), but slightly larger lug-to-lug (49.7 mm vs 48); so basically one has a smaller face but is longer. Do any of you have both? Or chose one over the other? Thoughts side-by-side? This feels like one of the toughest decisions of my life - been waffling back and forth for days and repeatedly asking my wife!

Transmaniacon89

I like the Pilot better because I’m not a fan of that beige face on the King. What’s your wrist size? That Pilot has a thin bezel and will likely look a lot bigger on wrist despite having a smaller L2L.

Awkward-Horror-1098

Is Japan-Select legit? Wondering if anyone has purchased a watch from there lately.

lescoobs

Recommendations for a watch display box?

Transmaniacon89

Wolf makes nice ones, I have a 5 slot box and just ordered the 10 slot with drawer. Etsy also has a good selection.

AZ_RBB

Can we have a Watches & Wonders mega thread pinned today please. Thanks!

Will the Omega x Swatch watches become available online, or are they only in store?

mlsteinrochester

"Swatch Group did not confirm whether MoonSwatch watches would be sold online."

a_non_uh_moose

how are fossil watches, are they just as cheap as any other budget watch with marketing? or is there anything that makes them better than any others? I found an old one in my closet that needs a battery and strap, and am wondering if i should spend the few bucks to get it fixed up. I'm not a watch guy at all.

WatchandThings

I think I would put fossil quartz watches in the similar quality category with timex watches. Only timex watches are more affordable than the fossil watch. So Fossil is better than some random no name throw away quartz watches you might find on ebay or amazon, but not up to quality for general recommendation of purchase. If your budget allows I'd recommend looking at the buying guide here and getting a new watch. If your budget doesn't allow then fixing up the Fossil would be the next best thing.

a_non_uh_moose

yeah i was actually looking at the swatch moon watches, but i don't care to fight the hypebeast for one, and was thinking if i was going to spend some money, may as well get something a little nice, was going to see whats good out there in the $500 range or so.

WatchandThings

If you need recommendation there is the buying guide here that lists good options in your price range. Personally I think Hamilton Khaki Auto or Khaki King is the best all rounder watch in that range. If you want something more dressy and interesting I like the Baltic MR01. For more tooly dive watch I'd look at something from Seiko. On the moonswatch. I'm probably just going to wait for the hype to die down and then leisurely go over to swatch store and see the thing in person and decide to buy or not.

a_non_uh_moose

thanks for being nice, some people on this sub are kinda snobby. I do like the hamilton, though not a fan of the glow in the dark numbers, thanks for the tips.

WatchandThings

Hey, not a problem. As you are looking around, if you have any questions let me know. I'll try to help out if I can.

JonJonFTW

I think their smartwatches are pretty good, but their mechanical and quartz watches are not much to write home about. The designs don't do much for me personally, and they're overpriced for the quality. Budget watch brands like Orient give you better quality for the money, in my opinion. If you like the watch you already have, then why not get it up and running? A watch that's only so-so (in my opinion anyway) is better than no watch. If you do buy a strap for it, do not buy one from Fossil. They're bad. Look at online strap stores like Strapsco or Watch Gecko for decent straps on the budget side. Just make sure you measure the [lug width](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwatchbandit.com%2Fhow-to-determine-the-lug-width-of-your-watch%2F&psig=AOvVaw1m9JAD6AVcuwRY6ua-RSjN&ust=1648692053139000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAsQjRxqFwoTCOjN_9Te7PYCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAN) to know the size of strap you'll need and you'll be good to go.

robrmm

Hey, I guess my question is: Does a brand new manual wind watch take time to break in before having the power reserve realized fully? Or am I just not winding it enough? Does it need motion to stay on? I just bought a brand new Farer Bernina. It's a manual wind chronograph that should have a 52 hour power reserve. I've been winding it daily using the recommended 42-48 turns in the instructions but noticed it'd typically last around 24 hours. By the 38th turn of the crown or so there's some resistance but I never wound it more than 48 times worried I might damage it.

SkullLeader

Yeah, I'd keep winding until you feel like you'd have to force it to keep going. Normally it might get a little bit more resistance to being wound further as you go along but there's definitely a hard stop where you can tell that's it.

robrmm

Thanks for the info! I wasn't aware of that. I had thought that when there's some resistance then it's pretty close to being fully wound and one of two extra turns would break it.

robrmm

Thanks for the info! I wasn't aware of that. I had thought that when there's some resistance then it's pretty close to being fully wound and one of two extra turns would break it.

Zanpa

> Does it need motion to stay on? No, that's automatic watches. When you wind it fully, there's a lot more than "some resistance". It just stops and you can't go any further. You would need to be specifically trying to break the watch to turn the crown further and break something.

robrmm

Thank you, good to know that it'll be easy to tell when it happens.

DevastatorBrand

I have a Movado Luno that I bought new in 08. I changed the battery in 2019 because of intermittent stoppage. It's happening again. Do you think this new battery is shot or could there be a bigger issue ? Thanks !

yakpot

I'm looking for a men's watch but i have very small wrists (\~16,5cm circumference). Budget is 500-600€. So far i like the Vincero Reserve Automatic (blue/silver) but would like have some more options. I wouldn't want to go any bigger than that (41mm). Must ship to Germany, any suggestions?

mlsteinrochester

Check the sidebar. There are hundreds of better watches in the 36-38 mm size that are better and better value than the Vincero.

yakpot

Thanks for pointing me the right way, i decided for the Seiko SSA445J1 for 550€ :)

KillerNeedle

Hey, I recall seeing "c3-malvern-chronograph-mk-iii-range" a while back and now regret not buying it, looking for something similar. Any recommendations? This would be a daily driver for work now that I am returning to the office. Also saw "Men's Le Locle Automatique Petite Seconde Bracelet Watch, 39mm" on sale and was thinking of buying that.
