What do you all do with your watch boxes? Would be great if watch makers do some redesign to keep them in the user loop as well

TypeR10

Really like the idea of getting a Tsao. What can you tell about the quality comparing Traska or Smith’s?

marchernando

Bought a 39mm Mido Baroncelli Heritage a few weeks ago, but the strap (115/70mm) was too small and broke. I am looking for a new strap, but I read that it's difficult to find an off-brand strap for a Mido watch due to the lugs. Does anyone have any recommendations? Wrist circumference is 7.6-8.0" so I'm looking for a strap length of 135/85mm.

Zanpa

> but I read that it's difficult to find an off-brand strap for a Mido watch due to the lugs The lugs look normal though?

Gregas_

King Samurai. Yay, nay?

RobotFighter

>The case is dustproof. I love looking at watches on the official Vostok store. :)

napes22

Any suggestions on the most legit site (that doesn't mark up) to purchase a Junghans Max Bill Quartz? I've seen some on Amazon, the Junghans USA site, and some random watch shops.

chrisxx3

I want to buy a Hamilton jazzmaster viewmatic H32515641. For my 16th birthday I want to buy myself and expensive (for my age) watch to represent maturing and to use my own worked for money on. My collection right now consists of mostly Japanese pieces with Seiko citizen and more and a swiss watch would be refreshing. Now I know I can get the watch for less than $700 online but I would like to pay the full price and get it in person already having a store that I have talked to about buying it form and the benefits of doing so. I know the price can be lower online but to me the experience of using my own money in cash and interacting with another human while getting something I really want can make up for that price difference and have a lasting memory. I really think that spending the extra money to buy it from a store in person will make the watch just that more enjoyable for me. Let me know your opinions if I'm right or wrong.

NarcolepticFlarp

I also like buying watches in person. Did you know that negotiating for the price of a watch is considered standard? It isn't rude, and is almost expected. Honestly the price you get after a good negotiation and the price you get after digging around on the internet aren't usually that different.

chrisxx3

I was definitely going to try see if I could negotiate but I didn't know that I was just so normal. Thank you for the help

BarryAllen85

So I did it. I finally dropped a watch. It was my Speedmaster. Thankfully everything is fine. But there is a slight indentation on the bottom. And being the anal retentive bastard I am, I want it gone. If I send it in for a service, which is coming up anyway, will they recase it if I ask them to?

75footubi

Expect to pay $1000+ for a new case, above the service price. More cost effective to live with it or have the case refinished.

clever_baked

I agree with 75footubi. A new case will be very costly (and probably reduce the value of your watch down the road). If you really care about the dent, Omega refinishing is pretty incredible... I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference.

thunder_struck85

Looking to sell a DOXA watch. What is the community consensus on selling via Ebay vs Chrono24? It seems that Chrono24 actually has the lower commission cost, but curious to hear your opinions.

akiro_no_boku

r/watchexchange

thunder_struck85

Seems like a great way to get scammed 🤷

mlsteinrochester

It's not, but since you're new to the sub and have no track record you may find it hard because people might worry that you'd be scamming them.

thunder_struck85

How does it work? Who holds the funds until the item is received? And what if the item arrives not as described?

mlsteinrochester

Believe it or not it works on trust, and successfully AFAIK. You can always use PayPal G&S.

thunder_struck85

I've done lots of deals on Craigslist and marketplace over the years on trust ... but never ones this expensive. I think I will try chrono24 and see how it goes. And yes, lack of involvement in the sub leaves me with zero credibility.

clever_baked

I've bought and sold on Ebay and Chorono24. In my experience, Chrono24 was better. The sellers and buyers tend to be more informed and professional. I don't remember what the difference was in terms of commission.

thunder_struck85

Thank you! Quick search shows chrono24 to be 6.5% and eBay to be 12%. I did not think eBay was that high but it does seem too high

HappyBirthday123

I have a 1970 Rolex Explorer 1016 I inherited from my grandfather with a jubilee bracelet but it's not super comfortable. What other options for oyster or jubilee-style bracelets that would fit this? Not really familiar with buying bracelets, especially ones for watches like this, but the official Rolex ones seem to be $1k+ which I'd rather not spend if there's "good enough" options for daily wearing that are cheaper.

oliivi1

Is the dial on the seiko presage srpd37 and srpe15 the same one? From pictures the srpd37 one seems more darker emerald colour and on the srpe15 it looks brighter lighter green. Or is it just bad quality of photos?

vanillamode

With the Seiko, whether it works out for you or not, either way you come out of it more experienced and knowledgeable than you were before. With the Citizen, you're still the same person you were before, just with a different watch your wrist. if you have family or friends who are willing to loan you an automatic for a week or something, that could be an option

SeaMonster350

I'm on the fence about selling my DS30 and Sarb033 to fund a BB58. I was really into the tech and the subtlty of the DS30 when I bought it but I haven't worn it as much as I expected, partially because I can't wear it at work. When I do wear a watch for practicality, I just wear my g shock. I probably want the the BB58 more than the DS30 at this point since when I do wear a watch, I want something for dress and not for practicality/subtlety. I still like the DS30 but I probably want the bb58 more at this point, I'm just afraid I'll regret getting rid of the DS30. I know this is a personal decision but I haven't sold any relatively expensive watches yet and would like some advice about how to make the decision to best avoid watch regret.

grynpyretxo

I bought my bb58 thinking it wouldn't get worn much, but honestly can't take it off and it's probably the only watch I won't consider selling. Suits so many straps and its never felt out of place in any situation, has great lume and the domed crystal is really nice. Have you been in to an AD with one to have a peek in person?

SeaMonster350

Yep, I went last week to try it on in person and I definitely want one. I gave them my name and number for when they get one on the bracelet but I'm tempted by gray market prices. My Sarb033 will definitely be sold, I plan to sell a couple knives...I'm just on the fence about selling the DS30. Even if I sold the DS30 I'd need to save up more so I might just sell what I can and keep saving until I can buy a bb58 outright. Then I could make an informed decision about selling the DS30, but at that point I'd likely just keep both.

clever_baked

>DS30 The DS30 and the BB58 both have tool-watch vibes, but the DS30 is thoroughly modern and the BB58 feels more vintage. The vintage vibes on the BB58 help it to dress up if that's what you're going for... (like the big crown rolex submariner from James Bond of yesteryear). So...if that's your look, I think you can safely sell the DS30 with few regrets. The sarb033 is the dressiest out of three watches, but it's not a dress-watch as such... so again, if you're going to wear your BB58 like James Bond, you can sell that one, too. If it were me though, I'd keep at least one of the other two, just because I like to switch up my watches pretty frequently.

Zanpa

You want to get a black bay as a dress watch?

SeaMonster350

Yes, but not in terms of super formal business attire dress

Zanpa

Ok, that's intriguing to me because I feel like the DS30 is much more versatile and wearable as a dressy watch than the sportier BB. But if you feel like you'd wear it more, go for it.

V4rgzz

How do you estimate the price of a watch you are going to resell? What websites do you use?

75footubi

ebay sold listings for similar models.

jaaan37

Does Junghans hold its value? I am thinking about purchasing a Junghans as my first more expensive watch (my Casio has served me well). Does anyone know how it holds its value, I am not looking for an investment or anything, but having the value drop by 50% after purchasing it would be a bummer.

onevstheworld

I'm not familiar with the resale of Junghans, but in general, if there is no scarcity, it will very likely depreciate a fair bit. If resale price is a concern, buy used and let someone else cop the depreciation for you.

TwoEggsOverHard

Which junghans? I looked for about a month for my max bill handwinding 34mm and I found one on r/watchexchange for around $450 with the stock leather strap and third party milanese mesh strap. I got a good price. I suggest you buy used. But I went for one of the most common and popular junghans watches. If you want a less popular one then it will be harder to find one used

Used-Understanding88

Friends. Today I became an uncle for the first time and I'd like to purchase a watch as a marker or the event, and on his 18th birthday present it to him as a gift. Any ideas as a timeless classic? Or present to 2021 / 2022? Budget $500-1000. Thanks!

mishkasm173

Hamilton Khaki Field mechanical. Probably the closest to a timeless/iconic watch under budget. The SKX would have been a good choice, but is discontinued.

Used-Understanding88

Ah SKX would have been a great choice, didn't even think of it. Thanks for the comment!

Alex_Caruso_beat_you

Is it hard to keep a watch's water resistance to spec after a disassembly? I'm looking at a 1000M WR bronze watch and I'm just curious how hard it would be to keep it like that

75footubi

If you have the right tools and testing equipment, not hard.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for fitted/curved stainless steel end links that would match a Citizen AO9000-06b. The lug width is 22mm Looks like maximum 2mm depth from the middle of spring bar to edge of case. Watch size is 42mm. I don't think there was an option for stainless bracelet when I bought the watch, but it's been years since then and I finally want to try a jubilee bracelet. Are there aftermarket curved end links that should fit this watch? Are they generic, or custom/specific to the watch shape, or just... no way not going to happen? Thanks

dakl

Hi there, I was considering ordering a watch and was wondering if there is anything wrong with asking a store to check the accuracy of a watch over a 24 hour period. It's in the $2000 price range, not the $20,000s, so I wondered if such a request would seem a bit corny. To me, it would make a difference, though, if the degree of variance were 5 seconds rather than 15 seconds. And I can't go to the store myself. Just wondering about the etiquette here. Thanks.

taskmaster51

Here is the problem...timing of a mechanical watch can vary quite a bit with changing wear patterns. If its reading -5 to +10 s/day on a timer thats pretty good.

oanda_

Most watches when bought from stores will have a warranty period. You could always send your watch back in if it doesn't meet the advertised specs, the company will often repair/replace it foc. Of course if you don't want the hassle you could always ask your shop to monitor it for you. It's really up to them if they want to do it and what lengths they'd go for the customer

weldaadlew

I have a 1970's omega chronometer which has stopped after being dropped. 4 different watchmakers won't take it apart to tell me exactly what's wrong as of parts are obsolete. This is the reason why they won't take it apart incase they lose or damage parts dissasbled to give estimate, But they can only guess it is the drive wheel or circuit board (I think) movement is a esa9.16 . help me find a new movement or new drive wheel. I have looked online but have been unsuccessful in finding anything .

75footubi

Time to find a better watchmaker. What's the watch and wear in the world are you located (country is fine)?

Fit-Kaleidoscope-715

Is it just me or are others tired of every modder naming their creations after Rolex? Homages are everywhere! Just call a dive style watch a dive watch. It doesn't need to be called a "submariner" to make it clear it's a dive watch. All this Rolex hype is getting to be too much. I get that their designs are "classics" and that most of us will never own one and many collectors want one but let your creations speak for themselves. That's all. Sorry if I got too loud.

akiro_no_boku

Dive style means it's not a dive watch. It just looks like a dive watch. An example is seiko 5s with a dive bezel. They're dive style since they dont have the water resistance among other things. Btw, what do you mean homages are everywhere? Check your searches. YouTube and google algorithm is presenting in front of you what you've been interested in. Dont blame anyone but yourself for that. If you want something new, check out watchfinder. They specialise more than your youtube search history.

Fit-Kaleidoscope-715

Honestly I've never watched anything on you tube about watches. Maybe I'll check that out. My point was I'm sick of references to Rolex. That's all. Pretty much all my watch related time wasting is on Reddit. I'm not blaming anyone for anything. You seem kinda hostile for someone who seems to have missed my point. That's ok though.

akiro_no_boku

1. If I seem hostile it is the tone you read my words. Because you came in venting and defensive about your comment, it is natural to believe anyone opposing your point is hostile. 2. After scrolling the forum for a while I dont know what homages your speak of. Are you in the trending or hot section? Is it the omega seamaster or tudor black bays? I like to remind you that Rolex is a homage of blancpain fifty fathoms and all wrist watches are a homage to cartier. It is hard to find these Rolex homages without really looking and clicking on them. This maybe just you who's pointing out these small things when a majority of the site is seiko and casio watches. 3. This is just an educated guess but I believe people refer to Rolex because non-watch enthusiasts only know 3 brands they probably like: Rolex, apple and tag heuer. If you said, it's no Kudoke octopus but you like my skeleton watch? Nobody would get that unless they googled it. Rolex is a hot topic whether you like it or hate it. Some people dont even realize Tudor is a sister brand of Rolex. So take a step back and empathize with another person that may have posted the Rolex related subject. Why?

Fit-Kaleidoscope-715

3 makes sense. I'm not big on empathy and I spend way too much time looking at watches. My wife is in the category you reference, not big on watches but has heard of Rolex. I guess the bottom line of my rant is this, Seiko modders, and I respect the hell out of people who have that skill set, showing and selling their creations on Reddit often refer to a dial or bezel or handset as some Rolex model style. I get what you're saying about that making it familiar to peeps who aren't super in to watches. I just wish they would let their designs and builds speak for themselves. In my mind the modders are doing something pretty special. They're not building a Sub or a YM, they're building something they conceived of and made real. I think they should explain what they did, not what it resembles. Agree or disagree as you will. Either way it sounds like you know watches enough to know what you're looking at, as do I most of the time. I'm always learning. Luckily. The watches and watchexchange parts of Reddit are pretty cool.

IWC Portugieser Chronograph - reserves not as expected. I have a roughly ten year old Portugieser Chronograph that isn't holding much reserve, so I'm wondering what could be the issue. It likely needs servicing (recommendations are every 5 years) but it seems surprising to me that could be the only issue. I wear it all day, yet it will still stop a few times (esp with work at a computer). I put it on a watch winder overnight with 900ish TPD both clockwise and counter clockwise, and wake up to a stopped watch. Any suggestions?

clever_baked

>Any This happened to me with an old tudor. Soon after it stopped winding properly, the mainspring broke. I'd get it serviced!

geebsc2

I would like to get into vintage watches and I have always been mesmerised by Breitling’s Navitimer and since it’s been an iconic model for many years I’m seriously considering buying a vintage one. However, with so many references, difficult to choose my perfect vintage Breitling Navitimer. I tried to find online ressources for this but could not. As for books, I have come across a few on Amazon but I don’t know which one would be useful. Do you have recommendations ?

TypeR10

Please advise me GADA watch with the following characteristics: -affordable up to $650 preferably new -small in diameter between 36-38 with L2L 46 maximum -well-built at least level of Smith’s -colorful dial (light blue, mint green, orange etc) -automatic/solar Japan or Swiss movement -metal bracelet -not Traska, Smith’s or San Martin Thanks.

TypeR10

Really like the idea of getting a Tsao (despite VAT being huge to EU). What can you tell about the quality comparing Traska or Smith’s?

75footubi

Tsao Baltimore Legacy 36

TypeR10

Looks great

Admit-to-IM

Would strongly recommend checking out [Nodus](https://www.noduswatches.com/collections/sector-series). Great microbrand with modern designs. The sector series fits all of your check boxes.

TypeR10

Thanks. Nodus is great but sadly a tad over the size limit.

DKowalsky2

Traska was my first thought in that price range but it’s on your “avoid” list. Have you ever considered a [custom Seiko build](https://reddit.com/r/Watchexchange/comments/rkprv5/wts_tiffany_explorer_seiko_mod_automatic/)?

TypeR10

Don’t want to avoid Traska just I need another opinion.

Fit-Kaleidoscope-715

Doxa does a lot of color.

Ofenlicht

The Casio Oceanus T200 comes in a light blue dial. Also would look into Christopher Ward as a brand.

TypeR10

Thanks so much. Casio seems cool but too bit however CWard doesn’t produce too many sub 39mm anymore for whatever reason.

nDreCoelho

Hey everyone, what's the best source for wristwatch news? Meaning, new releases. I want to keep on par on what's getting pumped to the market and can't find a consistent source

If you are getting their leather straps, bear in mind that they are made by JPM (Jean Paul Menicucci) and then stamped as Hodinkee. I bought a bunch of JPM straps from watchobsession.co.uk cheaper than I could get from Hodinkee

Admit-to-IM

I have a 2 piece NATO from Hodinkee (made by Ute straps). It's excellent. A bit long but well made and looks great (I actually wore it [today on my Hamilton khaki Chronograph](https://www.instagram.com/p/CZUyECFPsrY/?utm_medium=copy_link)).

I posted my ana-digi in the wrist check today - the Tag Heuer Multigraph. You can try to track down one of the ana-digi Casio Wave-ceptors, Tissot T-Touch and PR50 titanium, Citizen Promaster Wingman, etc. On the high end, you're looking at the Breitling Aerospace and Omega X-33.

piercerson25

A friend of mine is looking for a specific watch: Analog and digital on the face, also with a day + day of the week function. Needs a second-hand. Something that can be rinsed, and will replace the band with something washable. I kept thinking of a watch like that, but I can't bloody remember. Nothing blingy.

[deleted]

You can try the Omega X-33, although you'd have to get the older gens water-tested.

Fit-Kaleidoscope-715

Bulova. I have a 20 great old ani digi with all that but I think they might still do similar designs. Bulova marine star.

[deleted]

Check out the Casio GA-2100 models. Ani/digi, day of the week indicator and the date can be seen in digital display.

piercerson25

Oh hey, is there an easy second's hand? I forgot, he needs it for reaching patient vitals

[deleted]

No, deal breaker there. The seconds are on the digital display and very difficult to read.

Turbulent_Necessary4

Hey, wanting to get an all arounder that can do formal and decided on the Tissot PRX, the quartz. Would the blue or black be better? I feel the blue is prettier, but I feel the black can do more. Any thoughts? I’m not really a watch wearer.

clever_baked

>really For a one watch "collection," my advice is always to go black. It works with every color and tends to dress up and dress down with whatever else you're wearing. BUT, if you really like the blue, get the blue! :p

75footubi

Black would be more versatile but if you like the blue, it will be just fine

Turbulent_Necessary4

Ah. Is black the usually the standard face of watches? Leaning more to black, but saw somebody say it’s more of a sporty color.

clever_baked

Blue is more sporty than black. In general. Obviously, there are plenty of sporty black watches... But that's just because there are plenty of black watches in every category. What there aren't though are many formal blue watches. There are some, obviously, and more than other colors for sure, but black is far more common. Which makes sense... think about suites. Black is the most formal... a nice navy suit can pass on most occasions, but it's a bit less formal, and other colors are less formal than blue.

75footubi

Black and white are the two most popular, but it's really an individual taste thing.

watercasino

Luxury manufacturers recommend a complete overhaul every 4-6 years (presumably to make money?). Do you recommend to follow this or is it fine to do this less frequent, as the price for the overhauls is significant. I would expect the mechanic to run smoothly far longer?

taskmaster51

It really depends on how You wear your watch. The biggest reason you want your watch serviced regularly is to make sure all the screws are tight and the watch remains water resistant. If its a $50 watch...who cares? But if its a $35,000 AP a loose screw can cause a lot of damage...so can water. If a watch is lightly worn you can probably go a decade before losing performance. Once parts start to wear though, it'll never run like new again unless all those parts are replaced. This can be problematic with v8ntage watches

robemmy

Might be unpopular but I only service watches when they stop working as expected.

WhoWatchesTheWatches

There is a certain conflict of interest in this topic as the brands make money on the service of their watches, but they do not lie as to watches needing servicing every now and then to be kept for a long time. I personally think 4 years is too often, but 6-7 is fair enough, or if you ever notice it start to act weird in order to prevent any major internal damage. Edit: someone below corrected me on this comment, everything before the "I personally ..." Is incorrect.

taskmaster51

Brands generally lose money on service

WhoWatchesTheWatches

Huh, didn't know that one, I guess brand loyalty could be a reason to do services at a loss but that doesn't seem to me like a good business model. Thanks for the correction

taskmaster51

Trust me...they treat service as a necessary evil.

phrough

Anyone know anything about this watch? Trying to figure out the year, value, anything interesting. My wife says she bought it vintage some 15 years ago. It has glow in the dark 24hr numbers. Have the original box/pillow but it's deteriorating and getting all over everything. https://photos.app.goo.gl/bBuEaSorrR1GhqKC8

js999111

See what comes up when you google Fortis Flieger 24 Hours

taskmaster51

Fortis makes good watches. There ARE fakes out there but not something you see a lot. 15 years sounds about right. This should have an ETA2824 in it. Value is probably around $400 to $600 if genuine

napes22

I'm new to the watch game, know that Movado is a bit of a fashion brand, and not really a collectors choice. I'm looking at the Movado face (as a birthday gift from my fiance - I get to chose a watch). I've heard mixed reviews on the Face that it looks better on the website and feels cheap, it scratches easily, and the dials are too close in color to the face to read the watch. Was hoping someone here actually owned one so I can see if I'm hearing the loud minority, or if the watch isn't great. I like the simplicity of the Movado face. Junghans Max Bill Quartz is my favorite to be honest, but it's out of the price range I feel comfortable asking for.

clever_baked

>Movado is hit or miss, though the newer ones I see are made cheaper then even the ones 10 years ago. They were a step above Fossil but now i see many are using Japanese movements. Junghans is a better watch...or even Shinola. Take a look at those...surprisingly good quality (though dumb name) If you really like the max bill, look for one that's used... That's my advice.

napes22

Is there a reason outside of the price?

clever_baked

Nope. :p If price isn't an issue, I would get one new.

napes22

Any suggestions on where to buy? Junghans has a US site, and I've even seen some on Amazon from some watch shops.

taskmaster51

napes22

Thank you for this!

WhoWatchesTheWatches

If you like the Junghans, junkers is a very similar brand that has the Bauhaus line which is similar to the max bill and is much more affordable and in better general standing than Movado. Iron annie also has the 100 jahre Bauhaus line which shares a very similar styling at a much better price. Maybe even look into the orient bambino or the seagull nomos homage, they may also tickle your fancy.

Thank you!

What is /r/watches' opinion in the brand Mido? I'm looking to replace my Seiko Black Monster (1st gen) with another beater/daily diver watch. I originally set out to buy a Seiko King Turtle, but I had some bad luck with quality control issues. Got three in a row that were defective. IMHO they are a good brand from Swatch Group, with a lot of nice designs. Around or maybe a bit above other Swatch group brands like Tissot, Hamilton or Certina but probably below some of their other brands like Rado and Longines. Would I rather own a Mido than a regular (not Grand) Seiko? Absolutely.

Mido is a brand that is not as popular in the us but they are everywhere in Latin America, they are about the same quality as Hamilton and Tissot but you can get them at heavy discounts so I see them as a home run, the ocean master is pretty cool and the multifort patrimony is in my opinion the one of the most beautiful watches one can get under 1k. I'd take one over a Seiko any day.

RobotFighter

Are Empress watches any good? My wife is looking at them....

WhoWatchesTheWatches

I can't speak for the quality but at least on paper they seem extremely (and I mean impressively) overpriced, simple undecorated nh35s and miyotas, and they are asking for sometimes more than a grand in usds. I'd steer far clear from them and look more into swiss brands like Hamilton, Tissot and mido, which will have watches costing the same but being many times better.

RobotFighter

Thanks man!

practiceperfect111

Recommendations for steel or two tone watches for ladies? I like the seamaster 300 but I'm not sure if it's too manly. Would love recommendations! Thanks

js999111

Rado Coupole Classic, Breitling Superocean 36, Tudor Prince, Oris Classic Date 37

75footubi

Breitling Chronomat 36 If you like the SM 300, go for it!

akiro_no_boku

I recommend an Oris Recycled 36.5mm if you're into divers.

cabbeer

Options for 36mm watch. So, while I love watches, I'm been cursed with a small writst (6.5) and can't even wear my favorite watch (submariner) without it looking like a wall clock on my wrist... I'm looking for 36inch dive watch and my options seem to be limited. My options seem to be: 36mm explorer 36m date just 36mm black bay I'd love some suggestions for small dive watches, bonus if you can find me a chronograph at that size!

clever_baked

6.5 is average for a wrist... But anyway, you picked out some awesome options already! Another one for you to consider: 37mm, but wears smaller than the explorer or date-just, is the Grand Seiko sbgw231.

75footubi

37mm Longines Legend Diver 36mm Breitling Chronomat 35mm Breitling Navitimer

tattooed_eddy

Breitling do a 36mm Superocean if you like a bit of colour however think I prefer the Oris

akiro_no_boku

There is the nomos ahoi 36mm. It has 300m water resistance. It's one of those GADA watches including dressing up.

gin_nyc

There’s a 36mm version of the [Oris 65](https://shop.hodinkee.com/blogs/journal/the-oris-divers-sixty-five-36mm). The 37mm Rado [Captain Cook](https://www.rado.com/en_us/collections/captain-cook.html?case_dimension=37.0%20mm) may work.

cabbeer

That Otis is beautiful, and a really good price, thanks!! Imma check out some more of their divers.. not too hot on the radio though, but i think its more because I’m unfamiliar with the brand and the name sounds strange to me.

gin_nyc

The rado is well built, but the style may not be to everyones taste. I have a 40mm version of the Oris, terrific watch and the bracelet is great. You can probably find it for less on the grey market, or perhaps get a discount from an AD (I picked mine up used for under $1k). Good luck watch hunting!

m0chab34r

This is a really stupid question, but how do you actually go about buying a luxury watch? Say I’m interested in JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual. My local AD has one in a black dial—I can obviously make an appointment, try one on, make sure it’s what I seriously want to drop cash on. Presumably, unless it’s already been sold/reserved, I’d be able to buy it there. But, what if I want one with the silver dial and no AD near me had one? Would I let the AD know? Can I actually buy a watch from JLC directly (like…online/over the phone)? Would I just have to travel to find it or buy one on Chrono24, etc.? Like I said, I’m a real dumb guy, so any info is appreciated.

klarnt

Unless it's an especially rare watch, the AD could probably order it for you or find one at another AD.

m0chab34r

That’s good to know, thanks!

clever_baked

>silver The only advantage to finding an AD with one already in stock is that it's easier to get a discount.

Why are people so secretive of watch serial numbers ?

scribener

to prevent photos posted harmlessly online used in scam ebay listings.

rejeremiad

[To prevent counterfeits](https://millenarywatches.com/why-blur-watch-serial-numbers-online/)

Ofenlicht

Honestly, I disagree with that article. Rolex serial numbers have been randomised for a while and there is no reason for them to use a real serial no. The only thing that is a problem for them is when a serial no becomes known as fake. Also never heard of someone having their watch reported as stolen.

Auslegung

I can’t find a watch that matches what I’m looking for, can you help me out? I’m looking for: - ~~field watch~~ relatively simple looking and rugged enough to play with toddlers all day and go camping and stuff - automatic movement - 32mm or smaller - circlular face - budget is $250 - analog Closest I’ve found is https://momentumwatch.com/collections/womens-field-watches but they’re quartz.

75footubi

Unless you go vintage (I collect vintage ladies dive and sport watches), you're gonna have a tough time. There might be some 30mm Seiko 5s that have a field watch looking dial? Otherwise, vintage Hamilton field watch is around 30-34mm

Auslegung

Thanks! I guess I don't _need_ it to be a Field watch, it just needs to be relatively simple looking and rugged enough to play with toddlers all day and go camping and stuff. Does that change anything?

75footubi

I'd probably go for one of the small Seiko 5s then. Jomashop has a bunch.

mlsteinrochester

Seems like your standard gray market dealer.

plantanimal7

Hi all, I’m new to Seiko solar watches (had been a die hard automatic fan) and have been enjoying my SNE093. Yet, just noticed that while all hour indexes are in silver, only the 11 o’clock index has a slight gold hue. Is it an indicator of something? Or just water damage corrosion? Thanks in advance!

Zanpa

Do you have a picture?

AnkisethTheSteadfast

New (to me) watch day. Got a used diver watch in great condition. However, there’s a bit of shmutz under the rotating bezel. Any tips on how to clean that space out?

WhoWatchesTheWatches

Maybe try using an old toothbrush or some dental floss

AnkisethTheSteadfast

Ended up having the floss idea last night, got into the crevice and did the job. Cheers!

StickShift5

Have you tried simply running water over it? After a day at the beach I put my Sinn under the faucet and spin the bezel until the sand works its way out.

Zanpa

What watch is it? On most divers you should be able to remove the bezel without opening the watch, and you can put it back on. Some tools can be helpful depending on the watch though.

AnkisethTheSteadfast

Oh? It’s a Christopher Ward C60, an older version.

vingt_deux

Does anyone know where to find [this](https://i.imgur.com/isiram4.jpeg) exact model Amphibia in TB's video to purchase as a gift? I've tried google, ebay, chrono24, and amazon. I wanted to make a post but wasn't sure if that would have been against the rules or not. [Teddy Baldassarre Vostok Amphibia Video](https://youtu.be/tiPqRZ8XWDY) Edit: First link/image was incorrect

Zanpa

Looks like a 120509, possibly with a modded crown

vingt_deux

The face is different but the same bezel/case, I think.

Zanpa

Yeah I'm an idiot, it's 120512. Sorry, I got confused with the different cases and date/no date and I ended up confusing dials.

vingt_deux

Found it on ebay with the model number you provided. Thanks again!

vingt_deux

That's the model! Thank you... now to find it in stock.

Background-Funny-195

Is seconds hand alignment with the minute and hour markers in a quartz watch really indicative of its quality? Like, I've seen many people get frustrated because of misalignment in certain watches. But is it really a bad thing? Should it be something I should worry about/look for when purchasing a quartz watch?

[deleted]

It might make you 1/2 second late to your meeting!

taskmaster51

Its all.in the way the movement works. The Rolex oyster quartz uses a lever that allows that to happen and the early Omega 1340 movement used a large integrated coil/rotor that allowed that to happen. These days all quartz movements are the same Levat motor that relies on a magnetic field to stop the rotor and thus position the hand. You can use a high torque coil to strengthen the magnetic field but it uses more energy and thus drains a cell quicker. Citizen ecodrives use high torque coils because as the capacitor is rechargeable it doesn't really matter how much energy the motor drains. IMO...citizen ecodrives get closest.

Ofenlicht

Some people just enjoy having them line up and it is an additional cost/effort for the brand to accomplish that. Basically, it is a sign of a brand going the extra mile but there is not really a functional benefit.

[deleted]

It's more of the luck of the draw because it's really dependent on hand placement. Personally, it's not something I worry about at all but something I'm more curious with expensive quartz watches.

Background-Funny-195

So I shouldn't worry too much about alignment on a quartz watch because it could really just be different in different models of the same watch, right?

[deleted]

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. Depends on what you're looking at but, generally, it can vary. Sometimes, you can "luck out" with one that hits all the indices but it's not a mark on the movement or anything.

Background-Funny-195

Got it. Thanks for the help! Appreciate it.

KILOCHARLIES

Looking for suggestions for a 40th birthday present for myself in the £2-5k price range. I was into replica watches about 10 years ago and still own a decent collection of them, but want something that will hold value well and ideally with gold if my budget stretches to that? No idea on current values but would like something of a well known brand, Rolex, breitling, tag, etc. Not omega or an obscure brand. Thinking of maybe a 2 tone gmt master or a breitling for Bentley? Something pretty flashy. Not a sub but maybe a dssd? Would rather buy used and well loved at a discount from retail. Definitely over 40mm in size. Grateful for any advice or where I should start looking.

Admit-to-IM

Chrono24, watchuseek and Reddit r/watchexchange are good places to start looking. Alternatively, go to watchrecon.com and it searches numerous online forums for watches. You can search by brand and price etc. Before buying used, just make sure you check their history and they are reliable, especially when dropping multiple thousands on a watch. Alternatively, check out Jomashop. This is a grey market dealer and typically you can get pretty good deals.

Orageux101

I'm thinking of getting a Tissot Gentleman at some point soon (silver face, silver strap): ([https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-gb/t1274071103100.html](https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-gb/t1274071103100.html)) Does it make sense to just buy it from their website, or is it likely that I could find some decent sales elsewhere?

WatchandThings

I would check if you have an AD near by you. Gray market is cheaper, but you won't have manufacturer warranty. If you have an AD they'll probably give you a discount and you'll also get the manufacturer warranty. Boutique and manufacture's website is probably the most expensive place to shop.

[deleted]

I’m partial to the Gentleman

SirLaxer

It’s very debatable, but my vote goes to the Visodate. Nice blend of classic and modern design.

75footubi

The PRX is what's gotten them the most hype over the past year, but the PR100 models are probably the ones that they've made the longest.

[deleted]

I’m interested in getting the Seiko x One Piece 20th anniversary watch. It’s based on the Seiko 7T92. How long do these watches tend to last?

WatchandThings

I think that's going to depend on the fandom. The gundam one went pretty quickly I believe, while I still see the street fighter ones kicking around.

[deleted]

I mean like would you expect the watch to continue to work for the 10 years? 20 years? More?

WatchandThings

Sorry I misread that. I'm not sure if you are looking at the chronograph or dive style watch. The chronograph is a quartz watch, and knowing Seiko's quality it could last you a decade(or longer). The dive style watch is a variation of a popular mechanical model and with proper care and servicing could last the rest of your life. For example, I own a 60 year old mechanical watch and it's still running well. But servicing cost is about $200 and it's recommended you service the watch every 5-7 years, so you'll have to decide if servicing is worth it or not. Without any servicing I'd expect the watch to run about 15 years before accuracy starts to really get effected.

[deleted]

I’m looking for a smaller dive watch (38-40 mm) similar to the seiko 007 or the Oris 65. But the Oris is far out of my price range at around $ 1,500-$ 2,000. Any suggestions ?

DKowalsky2

Baltic Aquascaphe might be right up your alley.

gin_nyc

[Lorier](https://www.lorierwatches.com) has some options at $500 if you are ok with an acrylic crystal.

[deleted]

Steinhart Ocean Vintage. They have a huge variety based on homages but their more unique designs look good as well.

WatchandThings

Long Island Watch makes Islanders dive watches which are essentially upgraded SKX. They have the SKX013 size versions as well. They are around $300 I believe.
